Sharia Law...good news?

A story HERE tells how 200 Muslims interviewed said they did not want Sharia Law in the United States.  From the linked article, there's this:

A new study based on interviews with more than 200 North American Muslims over four years concludes that a recent spate of state laws banning "sharia law" from the court system may be an overreaction to a non-existent threat.
Oklahoma, Tennessee and Louisiana each passed laws or referendums to ban state judges from considering sharia and other foreign laws last year, and more than 20 other states have debated similar legislation. Newt Gingrich has called for a federal law to ban sharia, while his fellow Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum has said sharia law is an "existential threat" to America.

Z: The article is rather reassuring and you might want to read the whole thing.    But, here's my problem with it:  Do we stop the "recent spate of state laws banning sharia law" because of this study, as the author seems to advise?
Is it an "overreaction to a non-existent threat" or do we just cover ourselves with laws to make sure it can't ever happen in our country?   I'm thinking most Muslims, if their responses to the study are sincere, wouldn't mind that at all, right?    Right??  :-) Yet CAIR fights each lawsuit hook, link and STINKER.

What do you think?

From the end of the linked article:

MacFarlane's sample isn't representative of the Muslim community as a whole....

The verdict for the recent honor killings in Canada is bringing this discussion to the fore, I think. And should bring it to the fore!

How many Muslims and Muslim activist groups are condemning the terrible deeds of Mohammad Shafia? Where is the vociferous outcry?

There is nothing inherently wrong or inappropriate with banning Sharia law in the United States. We have our own legal system, it works well, and it is consistent across the land.

Sharia is religious based code, and is not applicable to civilized people. As AOW states, it is things like honor killings that reveal to the world the barbaric and tribal nature of Sharia law.

The study was an example of a press release, and not a credible study. We see this kind of questionable fluff all the time in medicine and climate science.

I think that someone felt the the need to have the study itself implies the need for the laws. I think the study was for one purpose only, to undermine the laws banning sharia.

Why not pass the laws? If it's not a problem than neither is passing the laws - correct?

Here's my issue with a great majority of the laws we have passed since 9/11 to keep us safe and free.

I fear an anti sharia law law would just be another in a long list of ones like we already have.

I agree with Chuck.

And besides, they can commission a study to get a desired outcome. Ever take a political survey and hear THOSE questions?

Just looking at Britain, with 'no go' neighborhoods and Sharia civil sub-courts is enough to make me want very clear anti-Sharia laws here.

I think if Obama gets another 4 years we will see more apointees like this

Banning Sharia Law makes no more sense than banning Catholic Canon Law.

Anything in Sharia that violates existing laws is de facto illegal already, and as for the legal parts, people are free to bind themselves all kinds of guidelines and bylaws.

Sharia has stuff in it about inheritance, family disputes, etc. How do you declare that illegal?

On your larger point, I have always believed that the vast majority of Muslims here just want to live their lives and are thankful that the BS they escaped is not going on here.

Ducky's here said...

There is no threat. These laws are just kabuki for the bigots.

Honor killings have nothing to do with sharia.

But yes AOW, there is a threat that they will be made legal. Absolutely delusional.

Silverfiddle, it's our laws which should govern families living within the United States, that's all.

AOW...the honor killings haven't been mentioned here at all in the news. Yes, I think it's important people hear about them. The one in Buffalo was discussed a little but nothing like the nutty Andrea Yeager who killed her kids. But, then, she was Christian.

Bob, I agree.......nothing inherently wrong in it.

Chuck, that makes such sense. I think it was done to undermine the laws, as well. That's why I question the sincerity of those questioned..

Dave, we are all well aware that fighting terrorism, mostly islamic, isn't going to be easy when we want our freedoms and our enemies know that very well. They're playing us like fine violins "they'll never really clamp down on us, they want THEIR freedoms!" Tough to figure out what to do.
Banning Sharia is one step we can show that this is America and we don't have families in America legislated by their own laws.

Ducky...always missing the mark.

Lisa, thanks for the link. Too bad most people won't see it or see anything wrong with it! Utterly amazing, isn't it.

Brooke...your points are so well taken ..if someone has his eyes open and willing to see the truth.

I'm with what Opus #6 said...

"So-called moderate muslims remain in the forefront of the invasion until the numbers reach a tipping point. Then the imams come in and lay down the law. Sharia law. Happens every time."

Amen..

Do you stop it? In a word: NO.

Shariah law will appear if we're too weak to keep our own. Too weak, too afraid, too PC, too fearful of "offending."

Unless we stay vigilant, we will lose this battle. How many from Itaq and Afghanistan are we bringing over here now due to "special circumstances"?

Miller, just where in the Constitution does it say that laws of other countries are to be accepted or used in this country in the courts?

No Sharia Law is needed in this country period.

I rest my case standing on the Constitution.

Ticker said...

Just to clarify my previous post:

Article Six establishes the Constitution, and the laws and treaties of the United States made according to it, to be the supreme law of the land, and that "the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, any thing in the laws or constitutions of any state notwithstanding.

Don't think this needs any further explantion when it comes to Sharia Law being used in our country.

Z said...

Most of you make great sense..

Ticker is absolutely right...DO WE NEED ANOTHER SET OF LAWS THAT ACCOMODATE A CERTAIN PEOPLE? DO WE HAVE JEWISH LAWS ON THE BOOKS? Well, yes, when one considers the 10 COmmendments are rather Jewish laws, but I think you know what I mean.
Do we have Hindu laws on our books?
Buddhist laws on our books?

Why does this group of people need special laws by which to punish (or not punish?) fathers and brothers who kill the girls in their families for dating or wearing short skirts?
American laws take care of that pretty well, I think.

Oh, Brian...not sure why you'd quote Bill Maher here, but I stupidly watched a little of the video because he used to be someone I enjoyed.
I was wondering which part of the criticism of Obama by Republicans, which he so witheringly scorns, isn't true?
Don't look now, but they're right. THINK, man.
thanks.

Silverfiddle: With all due respect, comparing Sharia to Catholic Cannon is a non-sequitur.

Catholics are not suing and rioting and clogging the streets with mass and insisting that the government change to abide by Catholic doctrine.

The only thing the Catholics are challenging the government on right now is mandated birth control, sterilization and abortions to be provided by Catholic medical organizations.

And then we get into the nuts and bolts of Sharia and what it represents... Not good. I want clear documentation by the law of the land decrying it before it creeps in.

Brooke, AOW made an interesting point at SF's blog.
Catholics can get annulments through the church but they have to get a legal divorce recognized by the state. I think that says it all, too, in relation to comparing Sharia to our laws. There are no Catholic laws in our gov't.
