This little anecdote illustrates that perfectly ...

"At the National Art Gallery in Dublin, a husband and wife were staring at a portrait that had them completely confused.

The painting depicted three black men totally naked sitting on a park bench. Two of the figures had black willies, but the one in the middle had a pink willie.

The curator of the gallery realized that they were having trouble interpreting the painting and offered his assessment.

He went on for over half an hour explaining how it depicted the sexual emasculation of black men in a predominately white, patriarchal society. 'In fact,' he pointed out, 'some serious critics believe that the pink willie also reflects the cultural and sociological oppression experienced by gay men in contemporary society.'

After the curator left, an Irishman, approached the couple and said, 'Would you like to know what the painting is really about?'

'Now why would you claim to be more of an expert than the curator of the gallery?' asked the couple.

'Because I'm the guy who painted it,' he replied.

'In fact, there are no black men depicted at all! They're just three Irish coal miners. I'm sure you are aware that virtually ...Ducky,

I'm sure you are aware that virtually all the art, architecture and music we consider "great" today -- and the splendid historic buildings that house and display it -- came into being because of the "whims" of high church officials, royalty, aristocrats and later some filthy rich captains of industry.

Like it or not fulfilling the "whims" of the rich and powerful is the only reason the glories of Western Civilization exist -- from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome through Mediaeval and Renaissance Europe to the present day.

It's perfectly possible for students to get an excellent idea of what great painting, architecture and even sculpture is all about from the myriad volumes of beautiful color photographs of great masterworks and from videos such as those made by dear Sister Wendy.

Reading political implications into Art that may or may not be there may do great disservice to Art appreciation. Denigrating the great patrons of the past who made all this work possible cannot help but cloud and shadow a student's view of what he's exposed to.

The Brutal Rape Fantasy characteristic of traditional male domination that certain fanatical -- possibly crazed -- feminists are eager to impose on our "understanding" of "the true meaning" of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony is a good case in point. I'm sure from many things you've said in the past indicating you have an honest appreciation of Beethoven that you realize this is arrant nonsense, and quite evil in it's attempt to use the work of a DEWM (Dead European White Male) to further a latter day political agenda of questionable value?

The best in Art exists simply for its own sake in my opinion. All of it is innately glorious and wonderful to behold aside from any implications we may want to read into it. Just as all of it has universal significance.

Polemical or propagandistic art tend to be narrow in scope and is quickly dated.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5516627478339613810.post-88427348508766893232011-02-27T07:25:05.848-08:002011-02-27T07:25:05.848-08:00z, I must say you are pathological. The students a...z, I must say you are pathological. The students are given a set of questions and relevant paintings. They develop their own answers.

This produces capable individuals who can think. This is a good thing.

Now, would the money be raised? In Boston the answer is, maybe. after the Fine Arts mounted "Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese" it was widely discussed that that type of show is going to become extremely rare. There simply won't be the money to mount it. You would have had to hit most of the major museums of the world to see that collection.

If a very arts friendly city like Boston would be strained (Madoff has a lot to do with this) then what happens in smaller cities and rural areas? I daresay I'm the only one you have posting who has ever looked at the list of NEA grants (and yes, received a small amount of grant money).

I'm waiting for the paper from the kid who noticed that in Gerrit Dou's "Sleeping Dog" (unmitigated masterpiece) that the dog's eye was partially open, the wicker basket was fraying, the jug was broken and cracked and we went on to talk about loyalty and mortality. He "got it". Another looked at a still life with shells and is probably doing a paper on the locations represented by the shells and why they would be the subject of a still life.

Of course we shouldn't help fund arts as a matter of course, we should leave it to the whims of private donors. I would have assigned Michael North's "Art and Commerce in the Dutch Golden Age" for the discussion on Dutch vs. Venetian collecting but it's a fairly advanced text.Ducky's herehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14608115001116619877noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5516627478339613810.post-18600978120765489032011-02-26T22:37:41.863-08:002011-02-26T22:37:41.863-08:00Ducky, imagine what you're doing to children. ...Ducky, imagine what you're doing to children. Probably the last chance they'll have to see the complete collection exhibited.
The NEA is covering some of the expense because the museum would simply not have been able to mount, transport and insure this collection on its own.
