And characteristically Old School conservative.

When I voted for Obama, I was realistic. I realized he could never fix all the serious problems that America faces, or even make everyone happy about his approach----not in the six months he has had so far, nor in four years, or in eight, should he get that far. I also know that the things most Americans have come to expect of their president is increasingly unrealistic. The Founding Fathers intended a more modest role for the president: defend the country when attacked, enforce the law, uphold the Constitution. In 1956, Clinton Rossiter, a political scientist, wrote that Americans wanted their president to make the country rich, to take the lead on domestic policy, to respond to floods, hurricanes, and rail strikes, to act as the nation's moral spokesman, and to lead the free world. The occupant of the Oval Office had to be "a combination of scoutmaster, Delphic oracle, hero of the silver screen and father of the multitudes," he said. In short, an impossible being.

Then I went to another blog and saw this: Kind of fits...I've met 3 people in 2 weeks who regret their vote for Obama, one a very liberal doctor who's screaming for Republican help against this bill ("where ARE THEY?" is what he asked Mr Z), which even surprised me. here's the bit from the blog...

I am not surprised that you can find people, who, taking a small-picture view of the immediate situation, will tell you what you want to hear, that they regret their vote. I suspect they would have regretted the election of the alternative (Palin and McCain) had they voted for it, and so would have many conservatives.

Then I turned to my copy of the latest issue of The Economist: Noting the ups and downs of Obama's popularity, it reported, "A Pew poll published this week finds that 93% of Germans expect him to do the right thing in world affairs. Only 14% thought that about Mr. Bush." Many people here and abroad have not written him off, as the rightwing blogosphere and rightwing media, lusting for a failed Democratic president, are aggressively urging them to do.

... Woops, I almost said 'praiseless'.

No, I am not a Freudian slipper----it doesn't fit me.

If a definition of NOT being a thug is one who seeks debate, then I guess I was right. The big hurry is not from one who seeks debate. The stimulus plan didn't even have time to be read, that's not seeking debate..you make a good point.

Guessing thus, you make a disingenuous point, Z, since the stimulus plan was hotly debated in Congress and in public forums, and still is. There are no thugs threatening its critics with life and limb, as thugs are wont to do. Thugs do not present arguments for public approval, as was done with the stimulus plan and is done for other Obama proposals. Thugs censor arguments. A bipartisan sense of urgency is not the equivalent of thuggery.

And yes, wasn't George Bush right again....

Was Bush a thug? Detaining indefinitely anyone he wanted without access to a judicial process, creating policies that subjected people to torture in violation of human rights and American standards of morality?

It gives me no pleasure to refer to an American president as a thug, but there are worse words I would never use in public.

Yes, I know (I feel your pain). Some rightwingers have called Obama a traitor. Or a Nazi and/or fascist. Or an imbecile.

In fact, the number of uses here of 'thug' indicate that rightwing posters get not-so-secret pleasure from calling their president a thug. But I am thankful you, at least, are civilized enough, Z, to restrain yourself from indulging in the worst pejorative epithets.

Personally, I wish we had a president who would "Bring folks together" Sadly, this one seeks only to divide; by policy, by inference, by insulting ...it's so sad.

It isn't that he hasn't tried, but many rightwingers, acting stupidly, have made the partisan divide too wide to bridge, even for the good of America. It's like they want to help him fail, for the sake of conservatism and Republican power. It's so sad: Republicans used to say that Democrats would do anything to gain power; no doubt Republicans are now saying the same about Republicans.

Thanks for coming by :-)

And thank you for your courtesy. Klaus - It's true the ...Hi all, and thank you.

Klaus - It's true the system can be abused, any system can. It is difficult to rid the system of corruption when so many in responsible positions either participate in it, or look the other way.

The electorate of course is also responsible. We have, in America, dumbed down our education system for years. We have lowered that bar in the name of affirmative action and other left-wing perceptions of fairness.

We have not as a nation, instilled in our children, the importance of honor, ethics, individual responsibilty, the cost of indulgence, and the work ethic which made this country great.

For me, I believe we have come to a moment when we American citizens must make our presence felt and our outrage heard. It seems we don't do this until our backs are against the wall. Apathy has been ramant for years.

I hold our media responsible as well. Without the truth, the people are not aware of the reality in which we live. The press has become politicized and in many cases an arm of the government. This means we are all ill-served, and misinformed.

We have been on this road for years, a gradual effort on the part of those who wish to turn this country on her head. We, the citizens, tolerated these baby steps and gradual loss of freedoms
until now, we see this big push to force us into a place which is oppressive and unamerican.

We are now left to fight as best we can, hoping for a bigger and bigger groundswell until those in power must take heed, and know we are not willing to be steamrolled into oblivion.

Thank you Klaus for your most interesting response. I hope you remain engaged. Your perspective lends another dimension to the debate.

Pris (Priscilla)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5516627478339613810.post-46630369228700607462009-07-24T12:14:30.149-07:002009-07-24T12:14:30.149-07:00Why does the left like Ducky thinks making everybo...Why does the left like Ducky thinks making everybody equal in a miserable state will solve problems of the world?

----------------

When have I ever said that? We've already sent billions there to help build them up; a friend's son is there now with the Peace Corps, ...how's that worked for them or us? Sure didn't help Rhodesia, huh?

If this country's kids in the last 25 years had not been taught only the bad about America, we would be every bit up at bat, ready to swing a home run for America again; hard work, good education and good morals were the important things until liberality came up with the typical kinds of "if it feels good, do it" "America has slaves, so we STINK in everything and need to apologize to the whole world" "Who are WE to have nukes and not N Korea?" stuff we're trying to recover from now, you know that.
There is no UTOPIA, DUCK..and Utopia won't work any better than socialism EVER has anywhere....
But, it's America, and she deserves a president who loves her, who puts HER and HER PEOPLE FIRST in everything he says and does.
Ducky, you don't "Float a boat" by weighing it down with more and more debt.

That people actually don't feel she does deserve No.1 standing in the world today is shocking and dangerous...for us and for the world.

Thanks, Frogburger....liberal Americans don't seem to care HOW many times we saved Europe's butt.
What a shame for those American soldiers who answered that need with their lives.

Heidianne, your uncle is a national treasure.Zhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15989573357446569262noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5516627478339613810.post-87540351042246951952009-07-24T09:48:02.328-07:002009-07-24T09:48:02.328-07:00not much to add because pris (and others here) hav...not much to add because pris (and others here) have already done such a grand job of it. thanks for this piece, pris and to z for posting this and the one from mr. lewis and mr. z. pris, your writing puts me in mind of two of my favorite favorite quotes that is more applicable now than ever (imho):

"Our legislators are not sufficiently apprised of the rightful limits of their powers; that their true office is to declare and enforce only our natural rights and duties, and to take none of them from us. No man has a natural right to commit aggression on the equal rights of another; and this is all from which the laws ought to restrain him." -- Thomas Jefferson (1816)1

"Resist, resist, resist, until we hurl the demagogues and tyrants from their imaginary thrones." --- Alexander Hamilton

and one other from my favorite uncle who has quoted here on ocassion as "old curmudgeon" that seems to fit nicely with frogburger's statements:

“Assert and exercise your Individual Sovereignty to the fullest extent possible without incurring fines, jail-time, or an appearance before a firing squad of statist thugs.” --- David Michael Myers, 2009heidianne jacksonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06783032991482798159noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5516627478339613810.post-55118209587679883942009-07-24T09:10:57.761-07:002009-07-24T09:10:57.761-07:00Why does the left like Ducky thinks making everybo...Why does the left like Ducky thinks making everybody equal in a miserable state will solve problems of the world?

Haven't they learned this pseudo equality in misery only leads to people being slaves of a few thugs like Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Castro?

God their ignorance is limitless.FrogBurgernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5516627478339613810.post-65202417512319087932009-07-24T08:55:24.717-07:002009-07-24T08:55:24.717-07:00Ducky the imbecile is at it again with his valuabl...Ducky the imbecile is at it again with his valuable comments.

Your folks can't fix it so now nobody can?

The world is using less resources b/c most of it is starving or has a pathetic economy due to lack of freedom, dictatorships, genocide and tribes killing each other and it's our fault?

Why don't you go do your self loathing at home with your buddies?

I'm sick and tired of your kind and the permanent guilt trip and loathing of Western civilization or the US for that matter when it has brought so much, including saving my family's butt in two wars.

Idiot!FrogBurgernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5516627478339613810.post-4774027638292102182009-07-24T08:49:34.440-07:002009-07-24T08:49:34.440-07:00Well, it certainly isn't shaping up to be an e...Well, it certainly isn't shaping up to be an effective presidency, is it.

And neither have the last several.

The country is in decline, and as long as we try to cling to the flotsom of dumb aphorisms, left and right it will continue to decline.
The days when a small percentage of the world population here in America can use 35% of the world's resources ARE OVER FOLKS. Obama has just been trying to refloat that boat. Come on folks, for once do the math and stop the partisan bickering.

There's work to do and as a nation we are structurally incapable of getting it done. You think this is going to be solved by a bunch of birthers and tea baggers or burned out hippies?
Shards and fragments. We have become a sorry people and the fault is us. Cheer up, when it's over, some of you still won't have insurance but you'll have defeated Obama which is the only objective, correct?Ducky's herehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14608115001116619877noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5516627478339613810.post-75546338626108142132009-07-24T08:45:52.894-07:002009-07-24T08:45:52.894-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Ducky's herehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14608115001116619877noreply@blogger.com
