I seem to recall that the helter-skelter militia of the revolutionary period continually had its ass kicked in somewhere around 93% of its engagements with a “well regulated army.” But, yes, they were able to beat up a bunch of bootleggers in Massachusetts. Militias were not adequate during the war of 1812; nor during the Civil War until incorporated into the Union Army. The militia was so inadequate to the needs of our constitution that the Posse Comitatus Act was required to protect local citizens. Likewise, the militia was inadequate during the Spanish-American war.

Discounting units federalized from the National Guard, how did state militias protect the United States from German, Japanese, or Soviet threats?

Say what you want to about Upton Sinclair; I don’t like his politics either, but at the same time, I’d prefer not to eat diseased meat. We know that no person or entity is good at everything, which is why sophisticated societies are specialized. It explains why civilized people develop complex institutions. We learned early on that kings made lousy priests, that businessmen often became wealthier than their powerful lords were, and we learned big government is a fearful master.

Apparently, the Soviet Union failed to learn any of these lessons; this in turn may explain the genesis of leftist drivel and duck crap heaped upon this blog. Nothing is more instructive than to listen to Ducky wax eloquent about the benefits of Marxism.

I admit that there are some things government does well, and I will even go so far to say that there are some things that ONLY the government can do well. State militias do not protect the union from foreign aggression, so we have a US military. It is nonsensical to imagine that each state should have its own currency, or that independent states can develop cogent fiscal policy that positively affects the nation. Federal regulation of meat packing industries makes good sense. But if we want to maintain a free market, then we must take care that we do not over-regulate it.

I cannot think of one positive aspect of Obama economic policy. Bush first began this errant argument about “too big to fail,” and Obama seized upon it and refuses to let go. Obama has flushed billions of taxpayer money down the “green technology” toilet, but continues to argue that we need additional federal stimulus. He may have put Finnish people to work creating electric cars, but our own people continue to languish in the pit of unemployment.

Left leaning weenies think Obama is wonderful ... proving once again they have no clue. In the long term, it would have been far better to allow banks and industries to file bankruptcy. Because of Obama’s ludicrous policies, America’s economy continues to teeter on the brink of collapse. Meanwhile, let’s continue providing “foreign aid” to China, who owns the deed to our entire country.

It is all so utterly stupid, but then so too were the idiots who overwhelmingly voted for Barack Obama and continue to champion his Marxist cause. The unseen benefit is this: our nation could be much worse off right now if Obama was a competent Marxist.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5516627478339613810.post-28260029433655384862011-10-31T09:36:21.948-07:002011-10-31T09:36:21.948-07:00Halloween was originally, long ago, called All Hal...Halloween was originally, long ago, called All Hallow's Eve, which was for the purpose of Christians scaring away evil demons.

It evolved into just a fun night for children to wear costumes, and go trick or treating as we all know.

What's the big deal?
