"John McCain's campaign has been working overtime to ridicule Barack Obama as The One, the rock-star celebrity with adoring fans, the politician with the chutzpah to announce his candidacy in a speech about Abraham Lincoln. So it was a bit surprising to watch the opening of McCain's town hall meeting in York, Pa., on Tuesday." (Z: Thus starts an article in Time Magazine. Here are 'highpoints' of the article, and then we'll talk integrity, okay?)
It goes on: "What's not such a good thing is the way campaign culture tries to slap down candidates who don't seem to fit someone's definition of "ordinary Americans." One would think the presidency would require a rather extraordinary American, but modern candidates are apparently supposed to pretend to be just like us."
Z likes this part: "This is silly enough when candidates are attacked for their wealth or supposedly elitist habits; it's hard to see how John McCain's multiple mansions or $500 shoes detract from his economic plans, and just about impossible to see how Barack Obama's decision to vacation near his grandmother in Hawaii undercuts his claim to economic leadership. But ever since the wealthy Whig William Henry Harrison's brilliant "log cabin and hard cider" campaign, candidates have tried to strike Everyman poses, and missteps that have made them look "out of touch" - like George H.W. Bush checking his watch during an economic debate, or John F. Kerry windsurfing off Nantucket, or even Bill Clinton of Hope getting an expensive haircut - have created major political headaches. "History is often made in remote and obscure places," McCain said. Even if you don't share McCain's bellicose ideas about Russia, there was something inspiring about his appeal to the conscience of the crowd, his insistence that the struggles of Georgians should be the concern of Americans. But the audience just listened quietly, offering only a few subdued golf-claps - until McCain mentioned Georgia's oil pipeline, and called the conflict a new reminder that it's time to do something about higher gas prices in America. Then the crowd erupted, and gave McCain a standing ovation." (Z: how about context with how Russian's involvement in Georgia could affect US in far scarier terms than oil?)
Here's the last bit: "McCain dutifully gave the questioners the you-first responses they were looking for, trying his best to show he could feel their pain. "I probably should have mentioned what you all already know: These are tough times," he said. It was hard not to wonder whether a man who endured such extraordinary pain for more than five years in Hanoi is really as troubled by dropping real estate values as he tried to suggest. But his supporters seemed to appreciate his rather ordinary answers, and they certainly appreciate his remarkable life story; when he was done, he was mobbed by adoring fans."
Time finishes the longer article with: "Wait: A remarkable life? Adoring fans? Clearly, he's unfit to serve." Sarcasm...since Time Magazine believes that being a rock star with little experience makes one fit to serve.
SO. Serving in the military as long as he did, suffering like he did in Vietnam and serving twenty years in the Senate are compared with Obama's celebrity status of having done nothing important in the senate and speaking to Berlin like a rock star? Those are comparable and McCain should be ashamed of himself for suggesting that Obama's celebrity status isn't quite what we're looking for in a PRESIDENT? Having friends like Ayers and Farrakhan and Jeremiah Wright (and more) and being the sweetheart of Hollywood celebs is the same as McCain's record of fighting those things Ayers, Farrakhan and most celebs stand for, fighting for those things that are PRO AMERICA and down on communism and racism? amazing. (By the way, this story was on the Yahoo homepage this morning...LOTS of people saw this)
You know, I'm not a huge fan of McCain's and you all know my horribly low opinion of Obama, but does Time Magazine really have this much trouble figuring out what traits and what background make a man fit to run for President of the United States? I don't. You don't, either.

McCain's senate record is mediocre as far as bills. Gaming, soft-money ban, etc. Everyone knows that. I'm not a big fan, by the way. But, no he's done a lot more than warm a seat; he serves on numerous committees and sponsored 573 bills, though most weren't enacted...that's the game in Washington.

Do you equate someone with McCain's service record with Obama's celebrity pull? Don't you consider intelligence a qualification? Or is it Hollywood aproval?
If McCain's statements have been 'muddled and contradictory' (which they have not), then Obama's must be, too, because he floated some stupid "let's talk" proposal and then realized it didn't go over well and then changed his opinion to McCain's position.
What will he do if he wins? Call McCain for advice? And, as you know, situations like Georgia are FLUID, who the heck knows WHAT to say? It would be better if they both shut up, this isn't their problem yet, anyway.

Did anybody see Larry King last night? I hear that Jerome Corsi, who wrote OBAMA NATION, was on?
A fairly nonpolitical friend just called and told me the guy from MediaMatters barely let Corsi talk and that King participated in the attacks, and they took NO CALLS. My friend said it was like a 'lynching'....and Corsi kept trying to say "but I have documentation, and please stick to the points and not Bush or Republicans..this is facts" To no avail. The left needs Obama to win and they will STOP AT NOTHING, folks.
I'd love to hear anybody's viewpoint if they saw that interview. My friend was stunned that it was such a major attack on Corsi, that King fought SO hard to get people on who'd unfairly attack the book, not participate in a reasoned discussion.
She said that, later, there were two people, a lefty and a right, and she said "the lefty was some big strong leftist I've heard before and they picked a really meek woman from the Right to debate him on the book."

I guess what we’re talking about here is “packaging the presidential hopeful.” I find it distressing that people care more about the irrelevant, while ignoring the critical nature of a presidential election. We should be looking at an individual’s demonstrated leadership ability, rather than a hope that he or she has it at a critical juncture. Some call this demonstrated ability “bona fides,” which I do regard as much more relevant than how much personal wealth they have, or how much they pay for shoes or haircuts. Our assessment might also include whether a candidate is capable of making an unpopular decision when it is in the short or long-term interests of our nation. In this regard, a 3 am telephone call may be important … but so too is avoiding one through responsible (and consistent) foreign or domestic policy programs. We want a pro-active president, rather than a reactive politician. At least, I do.
The problem with liberals is that they are idealists. There is nothing more dangerous to a free society than someone who lives in la-la land. Liberals are also think that the solution to every problem is to allocate more monetary resources … but history tells us that government spending contributes to more problems than it solves. Let us simply consider education as one example. How many billions of dollars have we taxpayers provided to a system that doesn’t educate our children? Whether you evaluate the Obama or Clinton campaign both want to allocate billions more to “solve” the problem, but neither one has any idea about what the problems really are.
The liberal agenda attracts people who think they are entitled to something for nothing. They typically have no interest in serving their country or community, but they want the taxpayers to fund entitlement programs to accommodate all-too-often deviant lifestyles. What right does any government have to take money from me in order to provide abortion on demand to irresponsible women, medical care to illegal aliens, or clean needles for drug users? Finally, I find it interesting that American liberals look upon European socialism adoringly, not realizing (due mostly to their innate stupidity) that most European socialist countries are on the verge of bankruptcy. This all fits very nicely into the queue, “Don’t confuse me with the facts, just promise me something to secure my vote.”
Voters should rather emulate the jet-pilot who is landing his aircraft on the deck of an aircraft carrier in the middle of the night; we need to keep our eye on the ball. Let us not allow the press or talking heads to confuse issues or divert our attention. Sadly, both campaigns are speaking to the masses as if we are all idiots (and maybe we are). If I had my way, not a single American would show up to vote on Election Day as a demonstration we are tired of business as usual in the American politik.
Obama's FAR more qualified! To be a community organizer, and buy cut rate property from a convicted swindler. He's got McCain in those categories.

OH, it was John McCain's war record. 90% of the links said HE caused the fires on the USS FORRESTALL!! ONE link described clearly what the navy and Pentagon thought happened (NOT mcCain) and that they'd been fearful of such a thing happening and it did. ALL others treated the situation as a fait accompli that McCain caused it.....something I'd NEVER heard of and, something which, if TRUE, would be ALL OVER every liberal rag, right?
