Our Pal China?

Most Favored Nation (also known as Permanent Normal Trade Relations) status was accorded to China in 1980, renewed annually by presidential order until 1989, when China decided to run over dissidents with tanks in Tiananmen Square. Public Law accorded China PNTR status, signed in to law by President Clinton in December 2000. This paved the way for China’s accession to the World Trade Organization and, ostensibly, granted US agricultural exporter’s access to Chinese markets.

Now the Washington Post is telling us, POSING AS TOYMAKER, CHINESE MERCHANT ALLEGEDLY SOUGHT U.S. TECHNOLOGY FOR IRAN.

The article tells us, “The Chinese toy maker said he was seeking parts for a “magic horse,” a metal-framed playground pony. But the exotic, wildly expensive raw material he wanted seemed better suited for space travel than backyard play. His shopping list, sent by e-mail to a Seattle factory, started with 20 tons of maraging steel, an ultra-strong alloy often used in rockets. The buyer didn’t flinch at the price tag —$2 million— but he repeatedly insisted on secrecy. ‘This material,’ an associate confided in an e-mail, ‘are danger [sic] goods.”’

If Chinese firms are willing accomplices to Iranian agents, it is not without the knowledge or consent of the People’s Republic of China. Let’s be grown up about this, however. We should expect China to pursue its national interests, which apparently includes helping Iran to obtain American technology to use against Israel and (presumably) the United States. I seem to recall the Chinese —several of whom were associates of Bill Clinton and Al Gore— attempted to influence American elections in 1996, and according to the Congressional Research Service, actually acquired US nuclear weapons technology in 1999.

No, we get it. What we don’t understand is why China continues to warrant PNTR status. Are we that desperate to sell cucumbers to China? It sort of makes one wonder whose side our elected officials is on …

Z:  just to throw in a thought...we need a president again who commands respect for our country...........not one who makes us look like DUPES.  Great post, Mustang.

"America the Beautiful" in CHINA??

BEIJING (AP) — China's state broadcaster isn't saying why the station ran the music to "America the Beautiful" during the gala live broadcast of the country's latest space launch.
Strains of the famed American patriotic tune rang out following the launch of the Tiang Gong-1 experimental space station module late Thursday night.
It wasn't clear why the music had been picked or whether CCTV producers were aware of the origins of the song, whose lyrics include the lines "America! America! God shed His grace on thee."
An operator answering phones at CCTV's Beijing headquarters on Friday said no spokesman was available and calls to the station's international affairs department rang unanswered.

I got that HERE.  Pretty amazing.  And why do you suppose the writer of the article singled out the line above "God shed His grace on thee?"   I found this whole thing fascinating, how about you?

Military "Buildup".....

We are being warned about the build-up of China's amazing military......

Meanwhile, our Marines are being warned about a private "buil-up"..they're being told that they can't FART, you should pardon the expression (I hate that word) used in THIS article............

I don't know...the juxtaposition of these two articles got me to thinking.......and the thoughts aren't inspiring.......Would China actually tell their soldiers anything like this to please their enemies? Can American soldiers ever do enough to appease their enemies?  GeeeeZ

Oba-MAO??

My wonderful Connecticut cousins went to China this Spring and wait till you hear what they saw!  Their college-going son lived there for four months studying Mandarin along with a bunch of other American kids.  He said it was one of the best times of his life.  His parents loved their two-week visit with him there, too.  The stories were amazing, like the fact that it takes about 30 minutes up an extremely steep and rotting stairway to get to the top of the Great Wall!     But, something really perked my ears up:

In a shop in Beijing  (a city in which guides tell you NOT to talk politics), they saw row upon row of T shirts and coin purses that have a picture of Obama on them and the words OBA-MAO!  My cousins asked how they heck they could do that and WHY?  They said people in CHINA say that Obama's "MAO'S MOST FAMOUS STUDENT".......My cousins were stunned.  The shop owner said "We here in Beijing think America's more Communist than we are now...we get to keep some of our money now."

I thought that was pretty surprising, especially for a city in which discussion of politics is pretty verboten (for lack of the word in Chinese, I'll throw in some German!).....Apparently, they have no problem talking AMERICAN POLITICS.   My cousin's wife showed me photos in that shop ........OBA-MAO things for sale all over the place!

Who'd have thought .........  Even the CHINESE get Obama.  Who knew?  They're going to get me a coin purse and I can't wait to bring it out from time to time with liberal friends :-)

"A rainy day in Chinese towns... had me low, and had me down..."

Chinese rural migrants to the tune of TWENTY MILLION are jobless.

This is a picture of crowds waiting to get into an unemployment office in China.

BUY MORE CHINESE?

Hillary Clinton in China: "Because our economies are so intertwined the Chinese know that in order to start exporting again to its biggest market, the United States had to take some very drastic measures with this stimulus package," Clinton said.

"We have to incur more debt. It would not be in China's interest if we were unable to get our economy moving again."

Clinton added: "The US needs the investment in Treasury bonds to shore up its economy to continue to buy Chinese products." (didn't we once say BUY AMERICAN?)

Activists are SHOCKED! (good or bad?)

Activists are 'shocked' at Hillary's stance on human rights in China:

"Paying her first visit to Asia as the top US diplomat, Clinton said the United States would continue to press China on long-standing US concerns over human rights such as its rule over Tibet.

"But our pressing on those issues can't interfere on the global economic crisis, the global climate change crisis and the security crisis," Clinton told reporters in Seoul just before leaving for Beijing."

RuhRoh. Put aside the POINT of this (human rights) for now, how fast do you think she'll cave to her buddies, the 'activists' who are 'shocked'? Did they really think EVERYTHING Obama's administration would do is payback? They supported him, so he's got to play their game to our possible peril? Do you think this stance will last?

Of course, if Hillary STILL doesn't understand that the 'global climate change crisis' is something she REALLY needs to learn more about before putting human rights second to it, then that IS a problem. But "economic crisis"? "security crisis?" Yes, I think we might want to put those in front of Tibet for a while...at least until some of these crises are dealt with, or at least negotiations with China, NO?

OR does this mean we're caving into them because at least we HAD the human rights situation hanging over them for negotiation purposes...? OR did our Left make it so that OUR human rights have been painted to be so inferior (Gitmo, Haditha, etc.) that we don't have any moral authority on that anymore?

What're your thoughts?

On a personal note, I think I might forgo wearing RED in CHINA....what about you? (heh)
