Aspen Times Weekly Opinion "In election 2008, don't forget Angry White Man"
(thanks to Jim McNeil for bringing this to my attention)
There is a great amount of interest in this year’s presidential elections, as everybody seems to recognize that our next president has to be a lot better than George Bush. The Democrats are riding high with two groundbreaking candidates — a woman and an African-American — while the conservative Republicans are in a quandary about their party’s nod to a quasi-liberal maverick, John McCain.
Each candidate is carefully pandering to a smorgasbord of special-interest groups, ranging from gay, lesbian and transgender people to children of illegal immigrants to working mothers to evangelical Christians.
There is one group no one has recognized, and it is the group that will decide the election: the Angry White Man. The Angry White Man comes from all economic backgrounds, from dirt-poor to filthy rich. He represents all geographic areas in America, from urban sophisticate to rural redneck, deep South to mountain West, left Coast to Eastern Seaboard.
His common traits are that he isn’t looking for anything from anyone — just the promise to be able to make his own way on a level playing field. In many cases, he is an independent businessman and employs several people. He pays more than his share of taxes and works hard.
The victimhood syndrome buzzwords — “disenfranchised,” “marginalized” and “voiceless” — don’t resonate with him. “Press ‘one’ for English” is a curse-word to him. He’s used to picking up the tab, whether it’s the company Christmas party, three sets of braces, three college educations or a beautiful wedding.
He believes the Constitution is to be interpreted literally, not as a “living document” open to the whims and vagaries of a panel of judges who have never worked an honest day in their lives.
The Angry White Man owns firearms, and he’s willing to pick up a gun to defend his home and his country. He is willing to lay down his life to defend the freedom and safety of others, and the thought of killing someone who needs killing really doesn’t bother him.
The Angry White Man is not a metrosexual, a homosexual or a victim. Nobody like him drowned in Hurricane Katrina — he got his people together and got the hell out, then went back in to rescue those too helpless and stupid to help themselves, often as a police officer, a National Guard soldier or a volunteer firefighter.
His last name and religion don’t matter. His background might be Italian, English, Polish, German, Slavic, Irish, or Russian, and he might have Cherokee, Mexican, or Puerto Rican mixed in, but he considers himself a white American.
He’s a man’s man, the kind of guy who likes to play poker, watch football, hunt white-tailed deer, call turkeys, play golf, spend a few bucks at a strip club once in a blue moon, change his own oil and build things. He coaches baseball, soccer and football teams and doesn’t ask for a penny. He’s the kind of guy who can put an addition on his house with a couple of friends, drill an oil well, weld a new bumper for his truck, design a factory and publish books. He can fill a train with 100,000 tons of coal and get it to the power plant on time so that you keep the lights on and never know what it took to flip that light switch.
Women either love him or hate him, but they know he’s a man, not a dishrag. If they’re looking for someone to walk all over, they’ve got the wrong guy. He stands up straight, opens doors for women and says “Yes, sir” and “No, ma’am.”
He might be a Republican and he might be a Democrat; he might be a Libertarian or a Green. He knows that his wife is more emotional than rational, and he guides the family in a rational manner.
He’s not a racist, but he is annoyed and disappointed when people of certain backgrounds exhibit behavior that typifies the worst stereotypes of their race. He’s willing to give everybody a fair chance if they work hard, play by the rules and learn English.
Most important, the Angry White Man is pissed off. When his job site becomes flooded with illegal workers who don’t pay taxes and his wages drop like a stone, he gets righteously angry. When his job gets shipped overseas, and he has to speak to some incomprehensible idiot in India for tech support, he simmers. When Al Sharpton comes on TV, leading some rally for reparations for slavery or some such nonsense, he bites his tongue and he remembers. When a child gets charged with carrying a concealed weapon for mistakenly bringing a penknife to school, he takes note of who the local idiots are in education and law enforcement.
He also votes, and the Angry White Man loathes Hillary Clinton. Her voice reminds him of a shovel scraping a rock. He recoils at the mere sight of her on television. Her very image disgusts him, and he cannot fathom why anyone would want her as their leader. It’s not that she is a woman. It’s that she is who she is. It’s the liberal victim groups she panders to, the “poor me” attitude that she represents, her inability to give a straight answer to an honest question, his tax dollars that she wants to give to people who refuse to do anything for themselves.
There are many millions of Angry White Men. Four million Angry White Men are members of the National Rifle Association, and all of them will vote against Hillary Clinton, just as the great majority of them voted for George Bush.
He hopes that she will be the Democratic nominee for president in 2008, and he will make sure that she gets beaten like a drum.

Hmmm,
Looks like someone has been out visiting my relatives.
And no, the men described here are just examples of decent , normal , average men, men who believe in the code of John Wayne, and aren't looking for anything from anyone except to be left the heck alone and please, just stay out of my business men.
These are not babies, they do not need a group hug or any of that other pc crap, they know who they are and are grounded , self governing men.
These are the unsung heroes of this nation.
I will say it, I like men, I have no problem with men, I do not want to compete with them and I like that they can be strong .
All my men -kin will be out voting this season, and I know they will do the right thing.

Bravo, DAR dottr...you do the DAR proud! I just hope these unsung hero angry white men are breeding like rabbits and raising men just like them. I fear they're not. But, I can hope.
Wow, Mr. Hubbell has written a powerful piece here. He could be talking about my husband or my son.
I agree with everything dottr says. I like men too. They're terrific people.
Watching the returns on Super Tuesday, and the way they were reported, put me in mind of reporting on results based on tribal votes.
By that I mean, the whole thing was broken up into every group one could think of, save one. Angry white men. Do we just pretend they don't exist?
Having said that, how about this. Report the voting according to state results and call it a day.
America was not founded as a conglomeration of tribes, it was founded to represent a people, regardless of race, creed, or gender. American people. Period.
However if political correctness prevails, no doubt this will continue even though it's not healthy for America.
If it does, I vote for representation of the tribe of angry white men.

I had an angry white man as a Daddy, I was married to an angry white man, and thank G*D I have one as a son!
I also have several neighbors who are(and they help this widow)...needless to say, I am a connoisseur of the angry white man. And I appreciate them!
They shoulder incredible burdans without complaint, they care for their; family, friends and neighbors. After hurricane Frances, they were out with their chainsaws cuttng and stacking trees and branches down the street, running extension cords to the elderly widows who had no generators, opening up their grills every night as a gathering place.
May their tribe increase!
Good morning, G*D bless and Maranatha!

And that's burduns, not burdans...I plead no coffee! LOL!

John McCain is an angry white man.
"Quasi-liberal?"
Try "center-right."
There is alot of frustration out there with politics in general. The left never got over the initial election of Bush and has been in a hissy fit his entire term of office.
Clinton fatigue is a very real thing even on the left. Outside of single women over 40 I have never witnessed anyone who wanted to vote for Hillary. More to the point she is just not likeable and every action seems choreographed.
A uniting figure never materializd on either side. Right now Obama has the ABC vote anyone but Clinton.
I see the frustration and the mono
maniacal hysteria over Iraq. There are other issues that just never seem to get discussed. Maybe when Obama and McCain debate each other we will get them.
HOLY SHIITE, ZIN!
this guy nailed it to the door - there IS a day of reckoning coming in november.
for a moment there, i thought he was talking about nancpop...specifically...
MORNIN!

sorry tmw - burdens
i'm speechless
...but based upon the early primary numbers, AWM's are staying away from the polls in droves. And let's face facts, John McCain isn't exactly "firing them up". Over 20 million Americans have shown up thus far to vote in the Democratic primaries. I wonder if the RNC has had even half that number of votes cast in its' primaries.
And unless something drastic happens to fire them up, they're not likely to show up to vote come this November.
Farmer John, that just shows something about Americans that I refuse to believe. First, it shows they know nothing about the voting process or math(like, if I don't vote, it's a vote for the other guy), Second, they don't CARE what happens to America.
The thought that the very people who want to stop our funding of abortions, prevent gay marriage, keep their guns, etc., would be SO unthinking as to stay HOME and ENSURE they don't get what they want?
What happened to the American fighting spirit of doing ALL YOU CAN to (let's face it!) GET YOUR WAY? to do what you think's best for America?
The thing McCain will have to do is HAMMER the gun control thing, he's big on the 2nd amendment...that might help, if he keeps bringing up how the Left will "...take your guns away"...don't you think?
I'm just saying that those "have it your way" Burger King Americans seem to be leaning Left at the moment, and that we need to start changing that dynamic. Women, not men, are the ones who have been turning out to vote thus far. And right now, they're falling in love w/Obama.
As for guns, Obama sounded fairly reasonable on the issue the other day (Illinois campus shooting - but then, he's all about promises...). Obama's like Caesar.
Old Italian proverb - Alexander never did what he said and Caesar never said what he did.
And let's face it, Obama has no record in the "delivery on promises" department... which means he doesn't have Alexander's reputation holding him back, either.
McCain absolutely KILLS Hillary and Obama on 2nd Amendment issues.
(mind the pun...)
Mr. B...did you hear Obama straddle the 2nd Amendment issue? "well, I think we should be entitled to have guns...but I think we really have to do stringent background checks before selling them"
How much straddling can a man do before he splits in two ...? And can anybody pick up those pieces?
Mr. B...did you hear Obama straddle the 2nd Amendment issue? "well, I think we should be entitled to have guns...but I think we really have to do stringent background checks before selling them"
Gun entitlements! Yes!
Where do I apply for my Miltia Act of 1792 ammunition allotment?
;)
Mr. Beamish; do NOT let this get to your head, but I'm beginning to see "loud and clear"(what?~!) why so many want you for president.
My "Presidential campaign" started out as a joke... I figured, hey, I'm over 35 years old and I'm a citizen of the USA, I'm perfectly qualified.
Well, it took off from there, and it's a running gag I can't seem to kill. Believe me, I've tried.
;)
I wish I really could offer people an alternative to Democrat and Diet Democrat.
Maybe in 2012, if we're not all dead.
I loved this article..Very true stuff--Sums up alot of the people and men in my life--Father, Grandfathers, and mentors..The doers and achievers of our society should not be torn down but built up!! That goes for any race, but I know of exactly what the author of this article is talking about--well put
This guy Hubbell nailed it.
My only objection is that he should leave out the adjectives. Men.
They are not angry, except when there's something to be angry about. If you insist on an adjective, here's one: independent.
It also has little to do with being white, either. In my experience in the National Guard and law enforcement, I've known plenty of Hispanics and African-Americans who stand up the same way.
In 50 years, when France and Germany are under shari'a, these men will still be around. I hope 100 million of them, at least.
