Where would you go?

If you finally really decided to leave America, what country would you go to??

First...let's hear your dream country...............

and Second...let's hear realistically where you feel you could make a go of it!

Thanks!

My dream country... An isolated atoll in the Pacific.

There's a good book by a guy who did it for years, called An Island to Oneself.

Realistically? I've no idea. That would take some research. I don't think I'd want to leave here.

FreeThinke said...

Right in line with Brooke's sentiments this just occurred to me even before she posted. Oscar Hammerstein is the inspiration, as is so often the case:

Most people live on a lonely island,
Lost in the middle of a foggy sea.
Most people long for another island,
One where they know they would like to be.

Bali Ha'i may call you,
Any night, any day,
In your heart, you'll hear it call you:
"Come away...Come away."

Bali Ha'i will whisper
On the wind of the sea:
"Here am I, your special island!
Come to me, come to me!"

Your own special hopes,
Your own special dreams,
Bloom on the hillside
And shine in the streams.

If you try, you'll find me
Where the sky meets the sea.
"Here am I your special island
Come to me, Come to me."

Bali Ha'i,
Bali Ha'i,
Bali Ha'i!

Someday you'll see me floatin' in the sunshine,
My head stickin' out from a low flyin' cloud,
You'll hear me call you,
Singin' through the sunshine,
Sweet and clear as can be:

"Come to me, here am I, come to me."
If you try, you'll find me
Where the sky meets the sea.
"Here am I your special island
Come to me, Come to me."

Bali Ha'i,
Bali Ha'i,
Bali Ha'i!

If only such a place existed outside the realm of fantasy! But it doesn't. Human beings are human beings wherever you find them and, as Doctor Seuss said, "No matter where you go -- THERE YOU ARE!"

I would avoid Europe, other than perhaps Spain or Portugal. Canada, Australia and various Latin American countries would top the list.

Z - America is my dream country.
There is no other place I would consider going. We lived in Germany for a total of five years. And it's a good thing that we lived there early on - because I would not leave this country again.

Sorry I did not follow your instructions but that is how I feel.

I've never given any serious thought to leaving the US, other than my Zombie Apocalypse fueled musings.

A lot would really depend on my reason for leaving. I've been stationed in several countries, and traveled to many more, but I haven't found anywhere I'd rather live under normal circumstances than here.

Now if it were the rise of the undead, Northern British Columbia. Some other sort of social collapse, possibly a key off of Costa Rica.

Kurt,

Yagotta read my stuff -- long-winded though it sometimes be -- all the way to the end.

At the last I said, "If only such a place existed outside the realm of fantasy! But it doesn't. ..."

Oscar Hammerstein -- and I -- were describing a Dream Vision -- something above and beyond dreary reality.

Sometimes I think it would be lovely to live the life of Antoine de St. Exupery's Little Prince, but realize it would soon get awfully lonely ruling my own little asteroid in outer space with nothing to do but pull up the baobabs.

Saying you couldn't live elsewhere is a good part of this exercise, I appreciate that input, too.

I could very easily live elsewhere now that my dream is pretty shattered; it's hard to live this many years always thinking you can depend on Americans to be self reliant, successful, hard-working, generous, smart; that's gone, let's face it.
If I could come back any time, I'd definitely life in Munich or Paris (only if I was rolling in dough would I live in Paris; I'm grateful to have been when I did)...

Paris, Munich, Geneva maybe...maybe a small village somewhere in England;; or Oxford, or something like that...I'm very drawn to that scenery/lifestyle and love being in England.

Yup...there are troubles in those countries too; but seeing that isn't as painful as seeing what the leftwing's finally done to America. In no other country will you hear such criticism of itself. And a society simply can't prosper with a situation like ours.

I'm not an island-life person...

I've just listened to Pelosi again harping on her womanhood in assuring us she'll stay in power; I dream of a country where that didn't matter, where she'd have said "we are going to do this together" leaving the woman OUT of it. nobody cares, we know women are equal.
As a high school student told our liberal college counselor trying to shove colleges with 'womens studies' down her throat, "I don't mean to be disrespectful, but I was taught I could do anything my brother could do. I think women's studies set us back; we need to go on as PEOPLE. Please concentrate on my goals as a college student when you send me a list of colleges.."

That night, she tells me she received a list of liberal arts colleges profoundly loaded with the liberal classes, women's studies, etc., which she didn't want and which would never suit her career goals. She rec'd all of this from a UCLA intern we're helping at our school. And it's so typical.

And there's Pelosi, as awful and sexist as when she first took the gavel; I'll never forget when she put her arms up in the air like Popeye ... some woman, huh?

it's been fun to hear these musings of all of you and I hope we get more. It's a fascinating exercise and I don't expect anybody to read quite as much of you read into my query, but that shows a lot, too.

While recent events, here in the United States, have been disheartening, I would hate to get 'stuck' in a place where I have [absolutely] no say in the matters-at-hand.

IT's tough for me to answer that one since the US was my dream country. And the dream has been shattered and now I must say I have to get used to the idea it'll become like Europe a little more.

To the point I would accept a job offer that would send me overseas now. Not because I want to leave but because visiting the planet is good and fun. A few years ago, I would have never entertained the thought since my ultimate dream was to live in the US.

If I had to leave for good, I may as well get closer to friends and family and go back to Europe. I'd try to get myself into Switzerland since it's the only country that is smart enough to survive and you can make a great living. Plus the surroundings are pretty sweet. Or Germany b/c I like the mindset, the cured meats, the breakfast, the coffee and they pull together to fix their country. Unlike the French they are not selfish and work much harder.

I can honestly I was actually a lot happier when I wasn't a US citizen and didn't have to pay attention to politics at all. Since I couldn't vote, I didn't give a damn. Now that I do it's been hurting my happiness.

Obviously I meant now that I do pay attention to politics. I'm a very proud US citizen but sometimes I think oblivion and ignorance are bliss when it comes to politics.

I have lived in the Carribean, South America and Europe.

There is no other country on earth with the potential of the U.S.

We have abundant resources, unmatched beauty, and were designed for unparalleled freedom.

My dream country would be one with the smallest possible government, respect for life and property at all stages, respect for the Constitution and where people are individually responsible for themselves, their families and their neighbors.

Update and a tad OT...but:

An online petition that calls for the State of Texas to withdraw from the U.S. and create its own government on Monday reached the required signature threshold to receive an official response from The White House.

Similar petitions from other states have also been filed including: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Tennessee.

However, unlike the petition from Texas, none of these states had reached the 25,000-signature threshold to get an official White House response as of Monday evening.

There may be enough reason to "leave" the US...within our own borders?

But New Jersey and New York??? Not a chance of ever moving there.

Don't really know what the fuss about "freedom" is all about.
We are all a good deal less free than we imagine.

Still as someone whose academic interest is Renaissance art, well a double espresso al banco followed by a trip to the Uffizi, hey how can you lose.
There's a hill that makes it seem as if the dome is right on top of you and they have great ice cream.

I could live out my days a happy man without really giving a damn about General Petraeus and the rest of the stuff that bombs us here.

And if you're ready for it, there's a corner in the Pitti Palace that you turn and this Raphael Madonna just knocks you out. Art that can get you on your knees. That's the ticket.

From Z of GeeeZ:

Ducky, predictable...

As long as you have your Italian coffee and visit to a museum, you simply don't give a damn what's happening here.

It'll take us Conservatives to recreate America that we grew up in...with all the wonderful improvements we've had over the years...

we just need you to go to Italy so we can work.

It's painful for me to sit in upper class Santa Monica, on Montana Avenue, having a coffee and knowing I'm surrounded by rich liberals who voted Obama cuz it's cool and they simply don't worry. pretty stupid, I'd say.

I feel more free in the US than in France. And I am more free in general here. The State isn't on my ass all the time. Yet!

And by the way, Ducky, I understand why you're on the left.

Based on your statement, it does seem like you hate your life and feel like a victim. So yes, maybe in your case, you're not free.

But that's not a reason for wanting to make the rest of us feel less free as well.

Oh stop being such a drama queen, z. It's a day dream.

I have to admit I have too many friend who lived in Riyadh and Taiff to think I'd enjoy living there, but anywhere else? ... in a heartbeat.

And still I'd know America's in trouble and that we need Ronald Reagan again. We need him BADLY.

"Time for another great flood, if you ask me."

Indeed it is...a flood of aliens bent on forever changing the country into a 3rd world sheet hole from which they escape. Just as Californians leave there...they over run Colorado, WA, Oregon and Tecas...only to try their failed lunacy once again to their poor hosts that have to suffer from their failed endeavors.

The flood gates of aggrieved, angry, bitter blacks and "minorities" who are determined to seek "justice" and reparations from the whites in the country. They see all whites as "priveleged" and country club, trust fund recipients and don't have to struggle...like they do.

The mafia has turned from Italian Goodfellas....to Black Mafia....as in Obama, Holder and Jarret.

Determined to continue the perks and racial set asides forever and exclude whites, totally from any government assistance. Earned or unearned...it belongs to them.

The racial, bigoted laws against whites will continue with college enrollments, food, housing and voting "voting" rights acts. Where clear majorities of blacks now rule...at the expense of white voters and the "DOJ" becoming an affiliated arm of the NBPP, NAN and the NAACP.

Think not?

Then you're idiots.

Imp, I've lived here a long time and given a lot to my country in passion and tears and it's almost just too disheartening to see how racist Black America is, and how unthinking liberals are..
I'll never leave, but I love knowing I have a bed in Munich with my stepdaughter and places to stay in Paris with friends there...as long as I could come back.
living there, it didn't hurt quite so much to see what was happening here...even 10 years ago when I lived in Europe; here,it's too upsetting to be around people who think like this.

Yes, French and Germans are liberal but they discussed politics with me, called me a "very smart conservative who knows her stuff" several times, and we still respected each other over wine or beer and long into the night at a restaurant or in a home...they utterly respected me and I respected their opinions because they weren't QUITE as left as our nuts here, you could TALK to them and even persuade them; I didn't meet people so unthinking as the lefties here.

New Zealand's South Island is very nice. Only about a million people and the changes you will see in flora and fauna is remarkable. There are deserts, tropical areas and the southern alps have the most incredible glacial lakes that are turquoise in colors. I have ridden my bike the length of both islands several times but the south is a real gem! Reminds me of small towns in Cali near the coast in the 60s.
