Though the news isn't good, I've always felt N. Korea was saber-rattling, but seeing this hacked picture of the little twerp makes me a tad bit more nervous, doesn't it you?   He looks psychotic!

The Feds in my neighborhood!?$$$$

I just got an email from neighbors who went to a city meeting which discussed widening the large street my building is on.   I face a side street that's quiet, but the front gates are on a fairly well-traveled street here near Santa Monica.   They've been talking about widening this street for about 25 years and nothing's come of it so I was dismayed that it's being brought up again.  Here is part of the email my neighbor sent me.  Catch the part that really caught my attention?

There are two plans proposed for the widening -- one including bike lanes and one without bike lanes.  One of the proposals includes adding a center turn lane.  Of course, there is always the option of not doing any widening.  This is as a result of a large grant being offered by the Federal Government to do the widening.

Really? A LARGE GRANT?  The Federal Government wants my street wider?  What, because they're so flush they don't know what to do with our money?   Is this amazing, or what? 

The Federal Government?   Why, because of the BIKE LANE?   I'll bet that's it.  GREEN, dontcha know.  (very few ride bikes around here, by the way)

Typical.   The FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS SENDING MONEY TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD TO COMPLETELY DISRUPT THE AREA FOR A YEAR OR SO JUST TO WIDEN MY LITTLE OL' STREET.  Isn't that precious? :-)

The Second Amendment...

THE MEANING OF THE SECOND AMENDMENT...by "Law and Order Teacher"..a terrific man,  a friend and fellow blogger.

I wrote the following letter to our local newspaper.  I was tired of the people trashing the Constitution without much knowledge of the history surrounding the writing and inclusion of the Bill of Rights.  The discussion over gun rights degenerated into a name-calling contest.  It's sad that disagreement leads to such stupidity.  The New Town disaster effected us all.  The fact that I and those of like mind, want the Second Amendment to be understood and followed doesn't mean we don't feel pain for those lost and their families.  It just means we aren't to blame and we shouldn't be the scapegoat for anti-gun people.

I wrote:

I am a history teacher, a retired police officer, and a military veteran. My understanding of the Second Amendment is colored by my personal experiences and my knowledge of history. To say that some of the letters I've read are missing the point of the amendment is an understatement. From an historical perspective it is necessary to take into account the situation in the colonies as it pertains to their relations with the British prior to the Revolution.

To the American colonists, a standing army was the very embodiment of oppression. After all, the British Army enforced the laws. Throughout the 1760s, the various heavy taxes that so enflamed the colonists, were levied as the British Army fulfilled the role of what we know as the police. The Battle of Lexington and Concord that took place on April 19, 1775, was prompted by two things. The British certainly wanted to arrest Samuel Adams and John Hancock, rabble-rousers for sure, but they also wanted to find a reported stash of weapons and gunpowder that was rumored to be in the area. In other words, the British wanted to disarm the colonists. Compliance to tyrannical British policies would more easily be pressed upon a defenseless citizenry.

The Constitution was signed without a "Bill of Rights" that was later added. I caution my students constantly against looking at the Bill of Rights without taking into account the history of when it was written. If one were to doubt that the founders feared a standing army and its tyranny, look at the Third Amendment which prohibits quartering of soldiers, or the forced housing of British soldiers in private homes. These were people, who suffered real government oppression, so they wrote the Bill of Rights to preclude a repeat of their experiences.

Looking at the Second Amendment gives us the phrase " A well regulated militia." An understanding of history tells us that the "militia" was synonymous with "the people." After all, who were the militia, other than the people?  The founders feared government power and they wanted to make it clear that an armed people is a free people. The phrase "well regulated" refers to the First, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments which regulates and enumerates the powers of any police force, be it militia or otherwise.

The founders had a specific agenda in mind when they wrote the Bill of Rights. They understood oppression as only they could. In present day America, government oppression is much more subtle. I don't anticipate taking up arms against my government anytime soon, but we need to understand what the Bill of Rights means. As Thomas Jefferson said, "When the people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people there is democracy." If the government were to take away any of the rights of the people enumerated in the Bill of Rights, it would break an agreement between the people and their government that has kept us free for over two hundred years.

How Disarming! :-)

This always cracks me up!   Everything but WELCOME TO WISCONSIN is added digitally, it's not real, but it makes me laugh.  And I needed a really good laugh, I don't know about you!

How's about that town that's making gun ownership mandatory, by the way...........what do you think about that?  It's just "symbolic," apparently, since that Georgia town hasn't had a homicide in five years and only has one cop!   But...how about that symbolism?

Don't I have the RIGHT to be MAD?

You know, THIS REALLY TICKS ME OFF.   That link is an article about how some Hispanics feel about the new immigration reform suggestions and certain of them want to make sure that, in immigration reform, "their rights are respected."  

They broke into this country, they have lived off us in many ways, and they have rights?  They've broken our laws!

I really hesitate posting this because most of you know I'm quite fond of the Hispanic immigrants I work with, employ, talk to at my local grocery store, etc.. They are sweet, giving people and they're legal and they pay taxes!  MY RIGHTS are being infringed upon when I pay for illegals' health care, when many are working under-the-table and sending money out of our economy into Central America, when I hear everyone around me speaking Spanish and I feel like the usurper in the stores I've shopped in most of my adult life, when I know darned well that many Hispanics I see snuck in here and ...now are demanding RIGHTS.

WHAT RIGHTS???   Yes, they have the right to decent treatment, kindness, cordiality from us all.
Other than that, an illegal has the RIGHT to come clean and start his or her legal immigration process.

This post isn't meant to be a 'pile on' on Latinos, please don't do that in the comments section, but I really do get angry when I hear this RIGHTS thing.  One has 'rights' one is entitled to by law in ones' own country, not in the country into which someone snuck and is taking advantage of in almost every possible way.  Don't you agree???

If they don't agree, they do have the RIGHT to leave.

Pastor Leon.....was he KIDDING?

HERE is what was said by the Episcopal Pastor at St John's on Easter Sunday, with the Obama family in attendance:

The parts I wanted to share with you were:  "I hear all the time the expression 'the good old days'," Leon said. "Well, the good old days, we forget they have been good for some, but they weren't good for everybody.
"You can't go back, you can't live in the past," he added. "It drives me crazy when the captains of the religious right are always calling people back...for Blacks to be back in the back of the bus, for women to be back in the kitchen, for gays to be in the closet and for immigrants to be on their side of the border."

"What you and I understand," Leon said, "is that when Jesus says, 'You can't hang onto me,' he says, 'You know it's not about the past, it's not about the before, it's not about the way things were, but about the way things can be in the now.'"
Luis asked his audience, "Will you accept the invitation from our Gospel today to see things with Easter vision, recognizing reality in a different and new and wonderful way?"

Can anybody tell me when Jesus said "You can't hang onto me"?
Also, have you ever met a Republican who thinks Blacks are to be at the back of the bus, or women back in the kitchen or gays to stay in the closet?   Or that legal immigrants should stay where they came from?


Also...Jay Carney's words when the press room asked what the White House comment was on this really divisive, nasty swipe at half of America, were "...... he is not a politician. This is not a senator, a member of congress, or the president. This is a sermon at a church here that has been visited by presidents of both parties for many years. I don't have anything more on it for you."    He also said THIS, more of the same silliness.   They're so sensitive at the White House that all they can do is remind us how Obama enjoys going to that church (I think he's probably been there six times in five years, by the way) and how that church is one which presidents have gone to for years and how long that pastor's been there?  Is any of that relevant to the sermon remarks?  They just have to keep up with the "It wasn't Obama's fault, it wasn't HIS fault!"   We KNOW it's not his fault, Jay...but could the White House maybe make some appropriate comment to the INappropriateness of the sermon?

And, as Megyn Kelly said on FOX Monday, when Dr Benjamin Carson gave his opinion and suggestions about the health care law and taxes at the Prayer Breakfast Obama attended, the leftwing media was outraged at his using a prayer breakfast as a platform for his agenda!   Think the media will do the same for this Pastor Leon who REALLY  was inappropriate?   (ya, right)

Think THIS WAY, or ELSE

"Students are expected to write all papers and examination essay questions from a feminist worldview or critical perspective.  In Spanish class you speak and think in Spanish.  In Women's Studies you speak and think in feminist paradigms.  Examination essay questions written from critical perspectives outside of feminism will receive an automatic grade of F.  Papers written from critical perspectives outside of feminism will be allowed one revision.  Any student who is unable to write and think from a feminist critical perspective or worldview with a clear conscience should drop the class now."

From a Women's Studies syllabus at University of Syracuse circa 2000 or so.

"critical perspectives"....CRITICAL, when they must regurgitate only feminist perspectives?

The author of that syllabus introduction is Rosaria Champagne Butterfield, once a tenured head of Women's studies and English prof at University of Syracuse.  Feminist, Lesbian activist, etc............turned Christian, now married to a pastor.    Here is how she writes about the above paragraph:

"How did I get away with this?  the secular academic world is bold in its protection of worldview.  And I and all my feminist colleagues put this statement on our syllabi.  We worked as a bloc.  We comprised an interpretive community.  An interpretive community consciously and intentionally protects its way of thinking.  This is how important worldview is to education - of all stripes and colors.  And this is how important interpretive community is to worldview."

She bemoans the narrow mindedness now.  I wanted to show you the kinds of things threatened of our college kids.  They HAD to respond with the same feminist worldview or ELSE.   Is that critical thinking? 

Have you heard of things like this or experienced it yourself?   Is this TEACHING or is this UNTHINKING DICTATORIAL RUBBISH?
