Here is my question: If Bradley does get help turning into a woman, which isn't cheap, we will be paying because he is in prison. SO, what's to stop every other Bradley who feels like a Chelsea from suing the US Gov't for helping HIM/HER and not THEM? I mean, why should the government pay for Bradley just because he's incarcerated? He did something wrong, not right. Will we be paying for every non-felon who wants to be a girl now? And shouldn't we, if Chelsea gets her way?
Meanwhile, I'm thinking some fellas at Leavenworth will be REAL happy to see "her," huh?

Manning is going to the wrong facility if he has aspirations of being somebody's girlfriend.
The US Disciplinary Barracks at Ft Leavenworth, KS is unlike other federal prisons.
The most he can hope for is for his attorney to be successful in executing a legal name change, but even then, I'm not certain that the Commadant and staff at USDB are duty bound to address him as other than the name he had upon ingestion into the DB.
What he appears to ultimately desire is elective surgery/therapy. The USDB doesn't play those games. That aside, the tax payers of these United States should never be required to have the fruits of their labors taken from them and given to another citizen, for procedures to make themselves 'feel' better....much less more tangible issues.
Z - I don't think that the federal government should pay for hormone treatments for Bradley Manning - or for Chelsea either. :[

I 'think' that only occurs in some State prisons, not any Federal, but I'd have to check on that. DoD incarceration is another game entirely. I don't think it's going to get any play.

Police officers “have arrested one suspect, a juvenile male, in connection to the beating death of an 88 year old man earlier this week,” the Spokane Police Department said in a statement on Twitter. The suspect is 16-year-old Demetrius Glenn. The other attacker is still at large.

A WWII veteran who fought at the Battle of Okinawa, where he took a bullet to the leg and continued fighting, was beaten to death by two teens Wednesday night.
Delbert Belton, 88, from Spokane, Wash., was pronounced dead Thursday morning, KHQ reported.
Two male teens pummeled Belton outside a pool hall in what police describe a random attack.
"There was no indication that he would have known these people prior to the assault," Spokane Police Major Crimes Detective Lieutenant Mark Griffiths said.
Belton, who friends affectionally called "Shorty," enjoyed playing pool and working on cars.
Belton was Ted Denison's best friend of 23 years, Denison said in an interview.
Police are looking for two black male teens. One suspect was described as heavy set and wearing all black clothing. The other has been described as being about 6 feet tall and 150 pounds, and was wearing a silk do-rag. The Spokane Police Department is hoping the public can help track down the suspects based on video footage of the two

Again to clarify, I'm going off of general knowledge and memory on Federal prisons. The USDB is in a separate category.

All inmates are considered soldiers and are treated as such with access to mental health professionals, including a psychiatrist, psychologist, social workers and behavioral science noncommissioned officers with experience in addressing the needs of military personnel in pre- and post-trial confinement, Lewis said in an email. The Army does not provide hormone therapy or sex-reassignment surgery for gender identity disorder."
This nugget was also included in the report "At this point, Manning wishes to maintain privacy about his gender identity."
