Progressive Compassion

Jimmy Carter was such a compassionate progressive that rather than keeping the mentally ill within the confines of state mental hospitals —where they have a warm place to sleep, nutritional foods to eat, and around-the-clock medical care, he directed these people released into local communities. Of course, local communities could not adequately care for these poor souls, and so they began sleeping underneath highway bridges and overpasses, begging for food by holding up signs that misspelled the word homeless, and crossing over from physical and mental health statistical anomalies to those involving crime.

Good job, progressive movement —but don’t think for a minute that we don’t know what you’re up to.

Today, “mental disorder” is the leading diagnostic group for individuals regarded as disabled, receiving federal disability benefits. According to the latest Annual Statistical Report on the Social Security Disability Insurance Program (yes, another taxpayer funded give-a-way), there are more than ten million Americans receiving disability payments, and of these, half have been enrolled in the program since 1995. Of the ten million, 35.5% have mental disorders, but this number shifts according to geographical location. For example, 43.2% of the disabled in Washington DC are mentally disabled, more than half of those in Massachusetts are mentally impaired (but we knew that, didn’t we?), and highest among the common diagnoses in Massachusetts was “mood disorders,” which is again no real surprise. The nation’s capital is the highest area for psychotic and schizophrenic disorders, but only if you include members of Congress.

So then, what is the progressive party’s solution? It is actually similar to the solution enacted by the San Diego, California city counsel some years back, who authorized the purchase of bus tickets to Phoenix, rounded up all homeless men and women, and sent them on their way. In other words, “go crawl under someone else's bridge.” It is nothing if not Sanger-esque.

Source

Note: I used the term "give-a-way" because it makes no sense to give a mentally disabled person some sum of money, and expect him or her to spend it on something other than drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes. Like most leftist programs, this one throws money at an issue fully expecting the problem to go away. All it does, really, is give leftists the mistaken idea that they are compassionate. They aren't. Leftist programs ARE the problem.

Z would like to add that the I've heard so many times over the years that the mentally ill do immeasurably better when they're on their meds and, the minute they're off, they resort to the terrible behavior they're on the streets for;  violent, withdrawn, etc...I'm wondering if it wouldn't be useful to make payments to these people contingent on their taking drugs, or SOME way they could be forced to take them, to the point that they could get off the payments because they've done so well and can be educated or trained for jobs, etc.

"Releasing" the mentally sick out to the streets is one of the worst things our government did to those poor people that can't take care of themselves. I have a sister in law that was born 'profoundly retarded', was in a state home, which wasn't good, but then the state told the families they were closing the homes. My mother in law was fortunate in that the state did have programs for those with my SIL's diagnosis, but only if they were chosen for some of the different programs. She was chosen to live in a group home of 6 with one caregiver for two clients. There is no way my MIL could have cared for her, and the children were getting married and having children of their own. She couldn't walk or talk. Wasn't toilet trained. Couldn't feed herself.

Now, I don't know why the Lord allowed her to live, but I do know that she loves Jesus, loves her home, and is safe there. She was raped at the state home when she was 10.

I don't know the answer, but turning them out wasn't it!

"Progressive Compassion" YOU BLEEDING HEART LIBERALS MAKE ME SICK !
If you don't believe in the the United States Constitution , why don't you move to Cuba” Why do you live in the US how move to France, or Russia with your other socialist friends!
These Progressive Maggots put down our Constitution, our Laws, our troops, they are for abortions yet against capital punishment, for gay marriage rights and on and on and claim they are for the little guy, the guy who yet they always raise taxes and has anyone noticed liberal entertainer Belafonte visiting dictator Chavez or former President Jimmy Carter visiting Castro? Makes me sick too. And that scholar Dennis Rodman, Kim Jong Un’s buddy, who constantly visits North Korea. I guess he’s another creep that hates freedom!
These Liberals hypocrites act as if us Conservatives are against the poor guy, and that we lack compassion, and hate charities. Well wake up you stupid slobs, you are all wet!
Just compare the "poor" in the US to the rest of the world and you have to come to the conclusion that our system is better for poor people. How much more do you Bleeding Heart Liberals want us to do for these people, most of them ar [sic] lazy slobs anyway who just take, take and take.
We are NOT at all against as you called them “the working poor earning subsistence wages - people who mows our “damn” lawns, pick up our “damn” garbage, flip our f@#%$ hamburgers, and pick our “damn” fruits and vegetables under a hot sweltering sun” – (Those Were Their Words Not Mine)
You creepy assed Crackers are always quick to blame the Republicans for all your woes! As if we don’t care about the of the elderly, the sick, the children, and the poor. That's just wrong, we care hust as must as you do. Or think that you do!
We are NOT at all against anyone who works for a living no matter what they do. Working a low-class job is not anything to be ashamed off. It’s the Lazy Gimme, Gimme slob who we are against, the one who wants everything for nothing and gives nothing to our country, city, in return. The ILLEGAL’S who come her against the laws of our country and don’t pay for anything including taxes! Bit want our Hospitals yo give them service and want our schools to educate their mobs of children etc, etc, and etc. Pull your head out of your azz’s and wake up!
Do you think that because we are DEPRESSED about what is happening to this country, that we don’t care? Well it just the opposite, what Mr. Obama has don and is continuing to do is exactly why we care! I’ve never understood how people of good conscience and of “Fairly” rational intelligence could possibly vote for this shrub.!

You "Progressive Compassionate "guys kill me. You write blogs telling your hypocritical friends how stupid we conservatives are. You praise and defend, this failure of a president about, ridiculous so-called "documentaries", falsified news stories, and paranoid conspiracy theories. And now this.

Well excuse me but yes, liberals lost on election day in a very big way. You lost because Obama won. And now just look at the terrible mess this Nation is in. . No, you didn’t win,, we are being subjected to mass liberal hysteria on an unprecedented scale.

Funny how just 5 years ago how you liberals were screaming bloody murder about Bush taking us to war. .. Well what has happened since?
But no, go ahead and continue to belittle the very people who love this country so much that we can’t stand what Obama has don’t to her. So go ahead and call us q bunch of dumb, redneck hicks who can't read or write. You freaks want us to buy into your "message" and continue this path towards Socialism! Never happen, NEVER!.

So yes, go ahead and say that Conservatives are being blamed for dividing America? The next time one of you liberals makes this ridiculous claim just ask yourself how many hate filled, half truth "documentaries" has the right come out with recently? How many conservative reporters have knowingly passed off unquestionably false and forgered documents as "news" for the sole purpose of influencing an election? How often in the past few years have conservatives referred to Bush as Hitler? How many times have conservatives taken the word of such upstanding world leaders like Saddam Hussein, Yasser Arafat, Jacques Chirac, and Kofi Annan, over the leader of the free world? Like you have! And finally, how much groveling do we have to do at the unbelievably corrupt UN before you libs can get on board with the business of defending this country? I just ask that last question because you didn't seem to have much of a need for UN approval when your Golden Boy, Bill Clinton, bombed the holy hell out of Serbia while they were fighting Muslim terrorists.

Newsflash, you lost. You lost because YOUR candidate won. You didn't only lose the presidency but your also lost because, Nancy Pelosi and Biden and Reid won as well. That should tell you something. In case you haven't figured it out, people are not buying what you are selling. You can either deal with it and change your tune or you can keep on complaining, because WE are not going to Stop! And WE are NOT going to be Quite!

A Tale:

The ant works hard
In the withering heat and the rain all summer long, building his house
And laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant
Is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper
Calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be
Allowed to be warm and well fed while he is cold and starving..

CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN,
And ABC show up to
Provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper
Next to a video of the ant
In his comfortable home with a table filled with food.
America is stunned by the sharp contrast.

How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper
Is allowed to suffer
Kermit the Frog appears
On Oprah
With the grasshopper
And everybody cries when they sing, 'It's Not EasyBeing Green ...'

Occupy the Anthill stages
A demonstration in front of the ant's
House where the news stations film the SEIU group singing, We shall overcome.

Then Rev Al Sharpton's assistant
Has the group kneel down to pray for the grasshopper
While he damns the ants. The Reverend Al can not attend as he has contractual commitments to appear on his MSNBC show for which he is paid over two million dollars a year to complain that rich people do not care.

President Obama condemns the ant
And blames
President Bush 43, President Bush 41, President Reagan, Christopher Columbus, and the
Pope
For the grasshopper's
Plight…..

Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid
Exclaim in an interview on The View
That the ant has
Gotten rich off the back of the
Grasshopper ,
And both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.

Finally, the EEOC drafts
The Economic Equity &
Anti-Grasshopper Act
Retroactive to the beginning of
The summer.

The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number
Of green bugs and,
Having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the Government Green Czar
And given to the grasshopper .

The story ends as we see the grasshopper
And his free-loading friends finishing up the last bits of the ant's food while the government house he is in, which, as you recall, just happens to be the ant's old house,
Crumbles around them because the grasshopper doesn't maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow, never to be seen again.

The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident, and the house, now abandoned, is taken
Over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the ramshackle, once prosperous and peaceful, neighborhood.

The entire Nation collapses
Bringing the rest
Of the free world with it.

MORAL OF THE STORY:

Be careful how you vote in 2014 and 2016.

Z, I don't like the idea of forcing people to "take their meds". There's something distinctly unpalatable about that. And as AOW points out the elect have decided to update their manual of mental disorders, which will widen the definition of mental illness. Imagine that being wielded as a political tool, where political enemies could conveniently be described as "mentally deficient" and ordered the prescribed treatment of the day.

I'm not sure that loading monstrous expenses upon the state in the name of "compassion" or "progress" isn't a carefully contrived strategy to drive not only a country but the entire world into a state of financial ruination, as more and more states around the world embrace the notions of compassion and progress through government action.

Waylon, it's a night/day result on meds in many, many cases, and could mean life/death for innocent people they encounter in some cases.
There's no way to make anybody take their meds; this is probably why it's a better idea to have these poor souls in a situation where they're monitored.

Let's take a look at mustang's analysis:

1. He starts off with a reference to "Peanuts" Carter rather than starting with a framing of the issue by presenting the state of mental health institutions in America at the time.
Clearly off on the right foot (for a fringe right winger).

2. He nearly explicitly states that the mentally ill were merely turned out into the street n masse. Now that's the pure stinky cheese but he knows his right wing fan base will let it pass.
After all, they are looking for a chance to dump on Dems, leftists, socialists, communists, whatever the topic for today's two minute hate.

3. He then marches on to a complete non sequitur regarding the extent of mental illness today. Still avoiding any discussion of the purpose or effectiveness of deinstitutionalization.

So we can easily see that the goal is to simply rant rather than a discuss an issue and a couple of his fan boys play right along.

Not helpful.

I think this was one of those times when there was no good solution. There is still no good solution. The mentally ill facilities in some cases were like jails, and people could be put in them for almost any malady depending on what the shrinks could dream up. More than one woman was put into an asylum because she had problems with her endocrine system.

Now, we have people sleeping on the streets, and many of them prefer that life.

I don't understand these people, and I am wondering of our mental health professionals do, either. I believe the mental health professionals in our country have done nothing to help. They just collect their few, and play golf on Wednesdays.

Having another mood swing, Ducky? So it is your contention that thousands of citizens were not turned out onto America’s main street as a result of Jimmy Carter’s “concern” for institutionalized citizens? You leftists claim to be compassionate, I’m wondering if you can tell me one city in America, whether run by communists or conservatives that has adequately addressed this problem. We could start with Boston. Stories in the Boston Globe do not seem to indicate that the “good people” of Boston really give a damn about the homeless. Imagine that … a bastion of liberalism, too.

Mustang said...

Actually, Ducky, I do agree with you about one thing. You suggested a discussion about the effectiveness of de-institutionalism. No reason to discuss it … I agree with you that Carter’s program to de-institutionalize mentally ill people was quite effective. I simply wonder why you or any other leftist should feel good about that …

Ducky's here said...

No, you dipstick.

My premise is quite clear. mustang implies that the deinstitutionalization process meant that the mentally ill were simply released to the streets wholesale.
That is not correct.

Then mustang takes a swing at the commie because the commie, like everyone else, does not have a complete solution to the conflated problems of drug addiction, mental illness and homelessness.
And certainly not one that doesn't involve government spending.

This morning I left a message with MSNBC President Phil Griffin to express my displeasure. I have sent him a letter demanding that he personally, as president of the network, take responsibility and apologize for the disgusting tweet.

Until he takes internal corrective action and personally apologizes—not just to the RNC but to all right-of-center Americans—I’m banning all RNC staff from appearing on, associating with, or booking any RNC surrogates on MSNBC.

As an elected official, strategist, or surrogate, I’m asking for you to agree to the same. We can have our political disagreements with MSNBC, but using biracial families to launch petty and ridiculous political attacks is low, even by MSNBC’s standards.

It only coarsens our political discourse. MSNBC hosts—including Alec Baldwin, Martin Bashir, Melissa Harris-Perry, Alex Wagner, and Ronan Farrow just to name a few—have had a troubling streak in the last several weeks of making comments that belittle and demean Americans without furthering any thoughtful dialogue.

Perhaps it’s time for the executives at MSNBC to consider whether their network is upholding a meaningful journalistic mission. This is more than just a tweet or an offhand comment.

This is part of a pattern of behavior that has gotten markedly worse, and until Phil Griffin personally apologizes and takes corrective action, we cannot be part of this network’s toxic programming."

Two, in the eighties, the resulting "homeless" problem was routinely blamed on Reagan policies, falsely (see above).
Liberals were still to blame, Carter or not.
My grandmother was warehoused in Eloise, a former facility (now razed) in Dearborn.
It was worse than portrayed in The Snake Pit.
Yet, where else to hold her?
Well, when forced to, my parents took her in.
I'm torn. She suffered dementia and her presence was very disruptive to our household.
Now, group homes are a response, but often incur large costs for family members to start up.
Then the government kicks in money.

They are our family, and if we cannot care for them in our homes, then we should be willing to pay for their care in state regulated, professionally staffed facilities. I would much rather see these monies being paid as subsidies to professionally staffed facilities than doled out to people who are mentally incompetent to take care of themselves. There are solutions to this tragedy; I just don’t think we are looking for them hard enough. No one reading this blog will wake up tomorrow and decide to contact local politicians about doing a better job for these suffering souls. Chew on this:

According the 2012 National Asian American Survey, as well as a Kaiser Foundation poll, only 40 percent of the general public holds a favorable opinion of Obamacare, 42 percent unfavorable. Meanwhile, 51 percent of Asians have a favorable opinion of Obamacare, 18 percent an unfavorable one. Even Koreans support Obamacare by 57 percent to 17 percent.

Overall, 69 percent of immigrants like Obamacare, according to a 2010 Cooperative Congressional Election Study.

That same survey showed that only 35 percent of native-born Americans support affirmative action, compared to 58 percent of immigrants, including -- amazingly -- 64 percent of Asians (suggesting they may not be as smart as everyone thinks).

Also surprising, a Pew Research Center poll of all Hispanics, immigrant and citizen alike, found that Hispanics take a dimmer view of capitalism than even people who describe themselves as "liberal Democrats."

While 47 percent of self-described "liberal Democrats" hold a negative view of capitalism, 55 percent of Hispanics do.

Pew also found that only 27 percent of Hispanics support gun rights, compared to 57 percent of non-Hispanic whites. According to Latino Decisions, large majorities of Hispanics favor a national database of gun owners, limiting the capacity of magazines and a ban on semiautomatic weapons.

Seventy-five percent of Hispanic immigrants and 55 percent of Asian immigrants support bigger government -- also according to Pew. Even after three generations in America, Hispanics still support bigger government 55 percent to 36 percent, compared to the general public, which opposes bigger government 48 percent to 41 percent.

How are Republicans going to square that circle? It's not their position on amnesty that immigrants don't like; it's Republicans' support for small government, gun rights, patriotism, the Constitution and capitalism.

Bye bye American Pie....welcome to ??? Tacos and egg drop soup?

Part 2...the coup de grace:

Reading these statistics, does anyone wonder why Democrats think vastly increasing immigration should be the nation's No. 1 priority?

It would be one thing if the people with these views already lived here. Republicans would have no right to say, "You can't vote." But why on Earth are they bringing in people sworn to their political destruction?

Republicans have no obligation to assist the Democrats as they change the country in a way that favors them electorally, particularly when it does great harm to the people already here.
Yes, it's great for the most powerful Americans to have lots of cheap, unskilled labor. Immigration definitely solves the rich's "servant problem."

(Approximately 5 million times a day, MSNBC expresses bewilderment that any Republicans oppose amnesty when it's supported by the Chamber of Commerce. Wow! So even people who profit by flooding the country with cheap labor are in favor of flooding the country with cheap labor!)

It's terrific for ethnic lobbyists whose political clout will skyrocket the more foreign-born Americans we have.

And it's fantastic for the Democrats, who are well on their way to a permanent majority, so they can completely destroy the last remnants of what was once known as "the land of the free."

The only ones opposed to our current immigration policies are the people.

But are they going to give John Boehner a job when he's no longer House speaker, as some big business lobbyist will?

Will they help Marco Rubio run for president on the claim that, as a Cuban, he can appeal to Hispanics? (Fat chance.)

Will they bundle contributions for Eric Cantor's re-election, as well-heeled donors will?

Will they be enough to re-elect Kevin McCarthy to Congress so he can keep his gold-plated government health insurance?

Will they be the ones writing Darrell Issa's flattering New York Times obituary?

Sorry, Americans. You lose.

We need to do something with/for the mentally ill

Drugs help immeasurably and most of those on the street aren't taking even the drugs they're given. I know friends with mentally ill family members who are fabulous ON their drugs and back on the streets and violent, confused, without them. Completely nonfunctioning.

It's expensive enough for the mentally ill to be helped in institutions (which I prefer to the term WAREHOUSE) let alone throwing dimentia/Alzheimer's into the mix, too$$$$$$$$$$$ Unbelievably expensive.

We are also going to be spending BILLIONS on the HUGE, ENORMOUS amount of children who (quite suddenly) have Autism. (the amount and timing is sudden, not children suddenly developing it, tho that does happen in some cases) . Their parents will be dead in 30-40 years and those children will then be on the street. Or in institutions, many of them.

The problem of aged parents is another one.

FAMILIES NEED TO PITCH IN. What kind of family depends on the government to take care of the elderly loved ones who held that family's head when they were children and throwing up or cooked dinner every night for all those years and did their laundry...and paid for everything...etc? Then you let the gov't take over?

But, that's complicated, too. There is no "that's right, that's wrong"

So, what to do?

Jack, I agree about where the money should be spent; amen to that.

Religious groups used to help but they're shrinking in size, aren't they. Disrespect and kids who had college drive faith out of them...it's just not what it was and that was a HUGE force for good in taking care of the ill, old, etc. It still is in some cases.

I don't know what else to write...........it's a horrid problem that won't go away.

Tonight on Hewitt, he had a bunch from The Daily Caller; EXCELLENT young conservative minds, and VERY fair. They don't only cover conservative stories or from the conservative angle. REALLY good-thinking, amazing young people.
I wish some lib venue'd be like that.

He asked one of the young women about immigration and she was right:
"If amnesty is given to 11 million immigrants, Republicans will never win again."

Don't EVER think democrats aren't ALL about that and not so much about the altruism. Man.

And then democrats should ask themselves "WHY?" WHY? Because they get FREE STUFF, that's WHY.

Which is an insulting thing for me to say to the VERY hardworking Hispanics I happen to know....but really...11 MILLION people who started in this country by breaking a pretty MAJOR LAW are going to be given a pass AND OUR STUFF? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

I have two Hispanic friends who're legal and their families have done fine here and they're both MUCH more ticked off about giving other Hispanics amnesty and freebies than I ever DREAMED of being. Both Conservative women.
Ask Cubans, too...they're AGAINST IT.

Ducky, lots of very good stuff in the composition of your black/whites. Lots of good juxtapositioning. Very good stuff.

Z, I think it's more like 25 million.

REAL information is not available anymore.

Ducky's here said...

Than you for the kind words, z.

Ducky, you're welcome. I hope you consider doing a show some time soon.

@Ducky:

"I'm part of the digital age for better or worse, Imp."

How I miss using my Sinar / Schneiders with Fuji 100!

You familiar with George Tice by any chance?

Tice, DeCarava, Sexton, Adams, Caponigro, Sr....were all instructors of mine at one time or another.

Digital's too much damn work, IMO!

Imp, just boycott Photoshop like I do. That simplifies things.
P.s. film is not dead. I shoot 35 mm and 120 as well as Polaroid.

@Jen Nifer:

Funny! Boycotting PS is to late now.

" I shoot 35 mm and 120 as well as Polaroid."

Where do you get Polaroid film...? I have 3 SX70 folding cameras...no film.

Gimme a link?

Imp, I get film for my Polaroid 250 land camera on Amazon. It's Fuji 100c,$8.

The Impossible Project makes film for the sx 70 but it's $25 per pack.

I know it's folly to not edit my work, but I have a ton of excuses. ;-)
