REVERSE Discrimination with FOOD?

Aside from the absolute stupidity of this whole idea, who thinks this just might be a case of reverse discrimination?
I've got to admit...I don't eat it much, but I LOVE fast food!

It used to be we worried about the poor starving to death... now we're worried about them eating too much of the wrong things...

nanny state bulls*it!

Frankly I'm waiting for them to refuse to medically treat someone for high cholesterol who eats too much fast food.

The liberal position is that people are too stupid to look out for their own interests, so the leftists have to do it for them, while paying themselves generous salaries to do so.

Ducky's here said...

No shoprat, the leftist position is that the "free market" (LMFAO) is not capable of providing healthy food choices in an economically depressed area.

Now this is a complex issue so I know right wingers might have trouble thinking it through but you can't just open a Whole Foods market in east L.A. or a good sit down restaurant. There are some complicated dynamics and that's just the name of that tune.

So you let people subsist on crap or you try to halt the proliferation of fast food in the hope something else comes in.

Z said...

Ducky, there are better ways we can do this, can we not?

you guys always have to have A LAW!! Educate, encourage...teach those fast food shops how to do it better.

What is the MATTER with you people? Check this out, Duck...you will NEVER have a perfect world. Soldiers will die, fat people will succomb to illness and death, children have allergies, etc.

You can't have a LAW for everything..it's stupid, unrealistic, and Stepford.

o.t. - didja feel the quake?

you kidding, nanc? Yes, we felt the quake! it really rocked!
OH yes!!! But, LA's fine. Fox and CNN are making it like it was WAY worse than it was...(thank God!)

thanks for asking! xxx

Re: the quake

I lived in So Cal for over forty years. I used to joke about how I didn't trust air that I couldn't see, or ground that never moves.

Ducky,

It's not so much what we eat, it's how much. We're victims of our own success. There has never been a country were food is as cheap, plentiful, and easily accessible 24/7 like it is here on the greatest country on Obama's green Earth. Eating out at fast food a couple of times a week isn't going to hurt anyone. It's all the snacking and lack of exercise that's making us fat.

Even considering that, life expectancy continues to climb. So how bad is it really?

Z said...

Kevin, Obama would say "Obama's once-green earth", right?

And I LOVE that phrase about So Cal...I have to remember that!

what part of So Cal, if you don't mind my asking? roughly?

Los Angeles -- stuck on stupid with this food control idea.

shoprat said...

I'll stand by what I said. Most politics, including left-wing is based entirely upon personal greed, but the leftists hide it behind high-sounding rhetoric. They use the meaningless catch-phrase "for the common good" when the only good they care about is their own wallets and personal power over others. Somehow left-wing politicians and their cronies in the bureaucracy will get rich off this; they always do.

so then leftist position is that 'free market' is no longer 'free'

huh duhfus

Actually Ducky there's nothing complicated about it at all. There are also grocery stores in every area. People eat what they want, and it's none of our business!!

This is also simple; the left can't mind their own business.

Now, one more thing. Those fast food establishments provide jobs, especially for young people. But, of course that doesn't matter does it Ducky.

Because what this is all about really, is control just for the sake of it.

Eat FAST FOOD, WHT!! Carpe Diem!

How about those so called poor people cook and make their own food?
Have you seen the price of so called fast food lately?

I don't eat the stuff because I cannot afford it.

Poor people can't afford better my butt.

Ever see what poor people get with food stamps??

BOy, WV....you made the point of the day on this.

Cook better food at home.....it's cheaper and more nutritious.

NO, we have to MAKE A LAW. *and the new health law only applies to the poor? geeez

go figure.

Chuck said...

So now what, Tavern on the Green is going to put a franchise in? The left cannot stand the thought of us making our own choices.

Good, bad, indifferent, the poor are actually smart enough to make decisions about their own health, without the state doing it for them. Plus there's a couple of other questions here.

What about the middle class? It's ok for them to decide to eat fast food? For one thing if you have children, you have to be of a decent income level to eat at fast food. I know, I have three children.

What about other restaurants? I've always found this discussion interesting in that appearently fast food restaurants are the only ones who sell unhealthy food. Is the LA office of Big Brother going to police these other new restaurants that will come rushing in to fill the void to ensure they are serving healthy food?

Ducky,

Your imbecilic adherence to the absurd idea that leftists are actually capable of rationality never ceases to humor me. You're like a dog that won't stop pissing on an electric fence.

Now, a more sound and historical analysis would hearken back to the leftist regime in Germany in the 1930s and 1940s led by labor activist Adolf Hitler, who among other "progressive" causes sought to have the central government micro-manage even the physical health of the German individual.

Solution: market diesel in the 'hood

Ducky's here said...

You're right shoprat, we should let these folks have the level of choice the "free market" (LMFAO) can provide.

Popeye's or KFC. Isn't choice wonderful?

Ducky's here said...

kevin, our life expectancy is lower than other western nations.

Our diet and inactivity are the prime contributors along with smoking.

Poor neighborhoods are flush with cheap, high calorie, fatty junk and it is probably within zoning laws to limit their proliferation.

Of course wealthy communities keep them out completely but that's cool. It's just when poor folk want some jurisdiction over their lives that this kind of flap develops.

Z said...

Beamish has the best free market solution in his link. Just let the fast food chains stay in S. L.A. and sell the cooking oil from those nasty fast food chains to Manila for their cars.......win/win.

Ducky.......you write as if our life expectancy is lower than ALL Western nations, which it is NOT. "poor people WANT some jurisdication over their lives"? WHAT? They're loving the fast food as much as I do.

Typical liberal...POOR PEOPLE NEED to have laws to PROTECT THEMSELVS from wrong choices!

Minorities NEED our help because they just can't excel on their own.

typical..that's so very bigoted, don't you think? I'd be for leaving POOR PEOPLE to figure this out for themselves; if they want to eat fast food, spending their money that way, LET 'em. I'd go to fast food every day if my health permitted! But, I MAKE CHOICES. Am I so much smarter than POOR PEOPLE, Ducky? Why insult them?

And, yes, in my upper middle class area, there IS fast food.

Ducky..stick to facts when you write...what's the matter with you?

Z said...

Correction: The US's life expectancy is lower than other western countries, but by a year or two.

Looking at the countries which do better than we do it's clear it's not smoking at all. I've lived or visited many of them and the people smoke FAR FAR more there than we do. That was an interesting thing to consider.
I'd say it's more exercise and the type of food. People walk much more in any European country or Asian country, than we do.

My point is still that people should be free to make their own choices, that we can't legislate what people eat.
I stand by that.

Liberals: Sometimes S(*& happens. Get used to it. We do NOT live in a perfect world and no amount of laws is going to make it perfect for you.

I say we pass a law limiting the number of protein shakes Duhhkky is allowed to drink.

Another take on the problem in Pennsylvania.

elmers brother said...

Duhhkkkky, perhaps you could tell us why there were no markets there in the first place?

These places are catering to their customers and still smacks of government meddling.

How about we put phlebotemists at the front door of Burger King and require people to get a cholesterol check before ordering.

Would that make you happy Duhkkky?

elmers brother said...

Gap financing aka government meddling.

Papa Frank said...

Duckling -- why would you possibly applaud the government telling these people what they can and can't eat and taking away their options and free choice and then think that the government listening to phone calls is horribly intrusive? It's quite a disconnect in thinking. When will responsibility be placed on the individual and not on the society or the government? How does removing responsibility from the individual ever serve to help teach them and make them stronger? This entire way of thinking, along with the welfare system, is the lefts way of keeping slavery around. Instead of being a slave to a plantation owner they make people a slave to the state. Is that not equally bad?

Papa Frank said...

Or have you forgotten that it was democrats that were the majority of slave owners and it was democrats that filibustered for a record amount of time (a record that still holds today) in order to stop blacks from having the right to vote? Their new big government and social programs are their path to once again enslaving people.

elmers brother said...

wait for it...

wait for it...

Ducky's here said...

Papa Frank, this is a city ordnance to stop the further growth of the number of fast food outlets in East L.A.

It doesn't say squat about limiting anyone's eating junk food.

Simple attempt to give people in the area more choice. Now I thought that's what you right wingers were all about. Only issue here is that you can't get it through your skulls that an unfettered capitalist economy does NOT necessarily maximize choice.

Papa Frank said...

What it will do is stop ANY development of business in the area. These fast food businesses are open because that is what can survive there. They are not some sort of predatory institutions seeking harm for these people. To restrict them IS an attempt to legislate what foods people can and can't eat there. Also, them forcing business to shut down will only harm the tax base of the area and the job opportunities in the neighborhood without having to have a car fueled by the environmentalists $4 gas. Yet another enslavement technique by the leftards. Isolate - Infuriate - Ingratiate by "free" handouts. That is the leftard mantra when dealing with the poor!!!

Ducky's here said...

Environmentalist $4 gas?

Man, right wingers can't think much but they sure can whine.

"What it will do is stop ANY development of business in the area."

This is East L.A. business development has been a little slow for the last several decades. It's especially strange that retail establishments don't locate themselves in areas where people don't have money. You talk as if this ordinance is going to cripple a thriving business community.

Now maybe it is possible to get a supermarket or two located in the area which would provide better jobs than another KFC. I suspect your reaction is just to let the "free market" (LMFAO) do the same magic its been doing for decades in creating the problem.

What businesses are being forced to shut down? The places currently serving the fast food crap can stay and continue serving.

(((Thought Criminal))) said...

Ducky,

The best way to stop something is to cap its growth and promote its deterioration.

Let's make an analogy with another form of fascism. In Arabia, first Christians were banned from building new churches. Then those churches that were already there were burned to the ground. Can't build new churches.

Maybe that went over your leftist head, maybe it hit you between your beady eyes.

LA is not just banning investments in a low-income area, and you know it.

Papa Frank said...

When America installed a democrat congress the average gas price was $2.23 a gallon. Their refusal to drill, or anything else, has brought us to $4.00 and up for a gallon of gas. That's reality duckling.

Papa Frank said...

Name ONE positive piece of legislation that the democrats have brought us in their 2-year reign to bring down the cost of gasoline. That WAS one of their campaign promises. To bring down the cost of gasoline. Alas, they haven't done one thing except complain about Bush and Cheney. But those of us with intelligence in our corner KNEW that would be all they would accomplish.

(((Thought Criminal))) said...

Papa Frank,

In all of its nearly 180 years of existence, the Democratic Party has never failed to forward a candidate for any office that rational people should not vote for. This becomes especially true with the Democratic Party after 1912, when the Democrats upset that their insurrections and Ku Klux Klan terrorist attacks had still failed to destroy the United States decided to adopt an even further leftist stance.

And so it continues. Leftism, the political taproot from which both Communism and Fascism blossom, among other sordid fruits, is unique in being a political school of philosophy constituently incapable of producing an intellectual. Scratch a leftist, any leftist, and you'll find a mouth-breathing imbecile. Every time. Without exception.

Which suits the Democratic Party's founding principle to destroy the United States well.

(((Thought Criminal))) said...

Just an example, one of many:

When Republican voters returned from Europe after World War 2, many were hellbent to end the Jim Crow laws and institutional racism of which they found parallels in Nazi race laws.

When Democrat voters returned from Europe after World War 2, they did so with the idea of translating Nazi laws into English.

Which is why the 1968 Gun Control Act and the Nazi Weapons law are nearly identical.

Nevertheless, I feel compelled to add:
