i was speaking to one of the school secretaries today and her son, who's been in iraq for 10 months, is coming home sunday for 10 days - the tiny grandkids (5 and 4) are insisting they carry flags for when he gets off the plane - i wish i could be there for that - they are so precious. never, ever fail to approach a serviceperson or their families to tell them just how much their loved one's service means to you.
All of you are SO RIGHT.
Nanc...in a few months, MY PRESCHOOL students will be saying they want to carry flags, too! (I hope!), right? What great chlidren AND grandchildren this secretary has, huh!?
10 days is so short when they know he has to go back aaaalll that way. wow.
You know, sometimes I think the families sacrifice even more than their soldiers do. Got to pray for them, too..that's for sure.
this could get me in trouble, but this generation could rank in "the greatest" and lap them. they fight a war aganist an unknown enemy and a less than patriotice press at home.

yes, indeed...maybe this IS the greatest generation. Too bad so few of that age kid shows that integrity and righteousness HERE, stateside. Except maybe these soldiers would and that's why they're there and the rest are here...hiding.... and relying on them to keep them free and able to insult them.

Nanc...I always thank a soldier when I see one. In fact, we were eating out last week and they left before I had a chance to approach them. I was sad. Anyway, they deserve our very best.

If i'm not mistaken that's an IDF soldier in that pic. None the less, our soldiers are doing variations of that every day over there. I've read stories of soldiers adopting stray dogs and even smuggling them back home to America.
Apart from that, they bring medicine, healthcare and most important of all, security to the people of Iraq, all in the midst of a war, something no one on this planet is capable of doing even if they'd like to.
We pray for them EVERY night before dinner. We ask G-d to care for them and keep them safe because they are the best among us.
Did I tell you about the time I went to pick up Carmen at the airport about 18 mos. ago? As I waited for her a handful of national guardsman-maybe 15- walked off the plane and the entire gate ERUPTED into applause and cheers! Most of these guys were just catching a connecting flight! What a scene. Thanks for mentioning our troops.

By the way, "ich bin ein Berliner" was a terrible gaffe on Kennedy's part. Properly translated it means something very close to "I am a HOTDOG"–––or so I've heard off and on for the past fifty years.
I wonder if Mr. Z would be kind enough to clear up this controversy once and for all?

It's a question of grammar. The correct phrase would have been
"Ich bin Berliner"
Kennedy was so well loved that no Germans gave a hoot; they were charmed that he'd even tried to speak a little German.
Obama is a candidate. Mr. Z is daring him to speak some German. I don't believe any candidate's gone to these lengths...to go over and promise things to European heads of state when we haven't VOTED HIM IN YET and he doesn't speak for us. And, make no mistake, they're saying he's said what he would do and you can bet they're all gifts to everyone but America. The PA head already accidentally said "Presid....I mean Senator Obama...."
They're DYING for him! They want America subdued, diminished. On their side.
Until they need us because of a tsunami or war and then they'll be wondering where is the American might they'd always counted on?
And, apparently, they want a guy who says "Israel is a friend of Israel" as Obama did this week. See THAT in the media? I just heard the video..twice.

What happened: Obama on Wednesday was speaking to reporters in Israel when he tried to boast about what he'd done to protect Israel.
"Just this past week, we passed out of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee — which is my committee — a bill to call for divestment from Iran as a way of ratcheting up the pressure to ensure that they don't obtain a nuclear weapon," Obama said.
Why that's wrong: Obama is not a member of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.
Ironically, a man who traveled with Obama to the Mideast this week, Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., is a member of the committee. He was one of the "no" votes when the committee passed the bill July 17 on a vote of 19-2.
