Doonesbury...our Doomsbury?

Every Sunday evening, I get a bag on my patio from the neighbors who know I love the crossword puzzle; they get the LA Times del'd every Thurs, Fri, Sat, and Sunday, and those day's puzzles are what's in my bag. They include the Sunday comics. (I tell you this because I won't be paying for the Times again until I become a Democrat...i.e. NEVER) This was Sunday's Doonesbury, by Garry Troudeau, a radio interview is portrayed.....breathe deeply, it helps (a little):

Young guy Interviewer: "We're back with Republican consultant Doug Chumley! Doug, is it fair to say that your brand is in trouble?

Doug Chumley: "Yes, but we're fighting back, Mark - by eliminating voter fraud! All over the country, Republican legislators are working tirelessly to create barriers at the polls! By mandating strict ID requirements, we can disenfranchise the poor, the infirm, students, minoritires - anyone who can't be counted on to vote responsibly!"
Interviewer: "Fascinating! So, instead of making your tent bigger, the strategy now is to make the Democratic tent smaller?"

Doug: "Right! If we learned anything from Florida in 2000, it was that disenfranchisement works - that Republicans CAN win even if they lose!"

Interviewer: "So the new GOP is all about hope?"
Doug: "Hope and Change! Changing the rules, changing the subject --we're change agents!"

*** Z: ya. cute, huh? But, are there Republicans cartoonists out there ridiculing the Democrats as badly as this? NO? WHERE ARE THEY? And WHY aren't they there? Will the Fairness Doctrine demand they suddenly appear? Can Republicans be this beguiling, this seductive in their agenda....all that cloaked in 'humor'? How's it funny EXCEPT in the insult? Except in the "typical Republicans!" implication...?
PLEASE do NOT tell me this kind of stuff doesn't matter "it's only a cartoon". There are Americans who read this and, believe me, the drip, drip, drip does make an impression, does sink in. What to do? ANYTHING? HOW? WHO?
BY THE WAY....does the Obama camp have to PAY Troudeau? WHY NOT? Talk about free campaigning!
*thanks to the liberal neighbors!!

Remember when Doonesbury used to be intelligent, poignant, and funny?

Me neither.

Whenever any comic strip goes against the grain of the fourth branch of government-the media-then the libs get up in arms.

When Johnny Hart would do a religious theme in his B. C. strip, it seemed to awaken every anti religious group.

There you have it. Anything that goes against the agenda of groups such as the ACLU will be recipients of venomious attacks.

Beamish...Years ago, I liked it..maybe it was funnier, or maybe I wasn't as plugged into politics then.....

74, welcome to geeez! excellent point about the wonderful Johnny Hart...the Left has no lower level to shame, does it.

Also, a friend just emailed me reminding me the Times DID have Michael Ramirez, an excellent and funny, sharp and poignant Conservative cartoonist..a 'one frame' type of cartoon writer.

GONE. must just be a coincidence......:-)

Maybe we should ask if Doonesbury is a hired campaign hack for the dems. If he isn't he's more stupid than even I think he is.

Imagine the nerve of Republicans, expecting voters to be honest enough to be qualified to vote.

So, what's the deal? People on the lower rungs of the economic ladder who are smart enough to get driver's licenses, apply for welfare, register their kids for school, are not smart enough to register to vote, or get an ID if they don't have one?

Oh, I get it, this makes it more difficult for illegal aliens to vote! Hey, they're smart enough to get a phony ID. I don't know how to do that.

We're swimming in absentee ballots out here, how did that happen. Used to be you had to go to the Post Office and get one. Now they come attached to political mailers, for crying out loud.

If you take your responsibility as a citizen seriously, you should get off your duff every couple of years and go vote!

If you don't, you probably shouldn't vote in any case, because chances are, you haven't a clue about what or who you're voting for.

Oh just one more thing, you felons out there. THE DEMOCRATS WANT YOU! That's right, the criminal vote is essential for one man/woman one vote.

However, if you live in Michigan or Florida, one man one vote doesn't apply. Why, all this is dizzying is it not?

Change, this is what it's all about. Nobody ever said the change would make sense, or be good for us poor slobs.

The fun of it is, it can turn on a dime. If you can't keep up, don't worry. It doesn't matter if you are confused. The democrats have that market cornered.

THAT is HILARIOUS considering the Democrats have reduced their Florida and Michigan Delegation's down to one man, HALF a vote at the DNC Convention in Denver this August... Amazing, they managed to suppress/ repress representation/ turnout in BOTH these state's Clinton-leaning delegations with a stroke of Howard Dean's pen.

Z: I recommend you Google the names Cox & Forkum -- wonderful Conservative cartoonists. Or check their URL: http://www.coxandforkum.com. Also, check out townhall.com and click on "Funnies" and you'll see a long list of wonderful cartoonists whose work is collected from all over the US.

But comic strips themselves, instead of single-panel art? Nope.

What nice neighbors.

They read the L.A. paper so I guess we can say you're lucky to live next to liberals.

Guess who Trudeau would never think of criticizing?

How did you know?

I can't tell if it's only "unfunny", because I'm a conservative Republican. I honestly can't tell. The humor works on the presumption of "stolen (2000) election", which is false. So the humor is lost to me.

But I think cartoons from the right may also get the same reaction from lefties.

The difference of course, is that right-leaning 'toons really are funny. (^_~)

DUCKY..thanks for saying that my neighbors must be libs if they read the L.A. Times. You think that's good?
I prefer a big city paper to be even handed, myself. The L.A. Times is finally starting to make attempts, but they're almost laughable in their transparency....you might compare it with Obama, tell you the truth!

Ya, I think that if getting the only big paper, the traditionally ONE PAPER of a city, makes it apparent you're liberal, that's wrong.

Wordsmith; that's the whole point, isn't it. If it's not funny to us because it's just dead wrong, but rocks the Left....do you see what that says? Doesn't the fact that a hugely biased cartoon is on the cover page above the fold of the L.A. Times comics seem as wrong as the fact that highly biased 'headline stories' are there on the front page? it's funny to liberals..that's all that matters to the Times; plus, it's a slam to Conservatives, that's the biggest thing to the Times and any other paper in this country.

WHO CARES if it's on an editorial page somewhere? But here?...as if it's a real cartoon there only for its humor?...as if it is NOT a political statement?

That's my point.

Bloviating Zeppelin: They're not at the top of the comics as if they're legitimate, non-biased fun and laughs though, you see?

FJ...one man, half a vote? Sounds eerily something familiar that Black Dems might want to not 'go to', doesn't it. AWFUL.

Pris, shouldn't it make the Dems feel warm and cozy? Did you see they're working hard at getting felons the vote now in some states? Yup. Neat feeling to know your candidate draws felons, illegals who WILL VOTE (we all know that, some will), elderly who are 'helped' by 'friend's, convinced to get Absentee Ballots ..then, as a Black elderly woman here in the hugely Black Crenshaw District told my girlfriend who works there, "then those nice people come to our homes and help us vote! And they go to the elderly homes and help them vote on their absentee ballots, too. Couldn't be easier." Those elder with Alzheimers will be making VERY sound decisions, right? miraculous!?

Yup. That was told to me 2 weeks ago. Truth. Great group, the Dems..and then the Media will be harping on Repubican voter fraud!! Oh, ya..they'll find articles about it, too, becuase they'll use GOOGLE to find it. just wait.

Namaste..you're a Democrat? I wasn't sure. But, you're an HONEST Dem. I still think some exist (smile)

Do you see any problem with this cartoon situation? I'd really like to know !!

I want disagreement and clarification here...good to hear all sides.

I agree with Beamish on this one. I have never found Trudeau even remotely amusing. He is a socialist, through and through. He mocks conservatives, as if the opinion of anyone but a Marxist is stupid and of course, the liberals eat it up. I’ve been boycotting his brainless political cartoon strip for more than 30 years … obviously, to no effect.

namaste said...

oh absolutely! it's propaganda brain-washing garbage. parties on both sides have been known to do the smear dance. they just use different tactics. but i do hate that the dems used the movie industry and other "harmless" platforms like this to sucker punch me with messages. they assume that most of america is stuck on stupid and need to be spoon-fed information. annoying.

Mustang, but it doesn't matter that he's not funny (and he isn't)...he's very effective.People DO see this and think "those AWFUL Republicans"..they take it as gospel...or "those stupid Republicans don't fight back, they MUST be this lousy", you know?

Namaste, we can use an honest Dem around here. Stick around!!

Gary Trudeau is married to [mercifully long-retired] Morning Show Hostess Jane Pauley, who was in turn supplanted in the hearts of those who adore perky females with an openly liberal bias by the now-almost-defunct-at-last Katie Couric. PHEW!

Gary's life has been very sad. He never had a mother. Instead he was conceived in his father's intestinal tract, and after an abnormally long period of gestation entered the world via the anal route.

He's been stinking up the place ever since.
