100-year-old Americans see election 2008 as historic
WASHINGTON (AFP) - For a majority of Americans who have lived to see their 100th birthdays, the November presidential election, which could be won by an African-American candidate, is the most important of their lives, according to a new survey.

Z: 'Which could be won by an African-American candidate'? Is the implication that THIS is why this election is "..the most important of their lives"? Of course that's what's implied. But, it's not true. My 82 yr old liberal Democrat aunt, JUST YESTERDAY on the phone, said "...I don't know about a Black president.." I was stunned because she's NO bigot. Yet, she hesitates to vote for Obama. I belong to a group of women many of whom are over 85 years old. I speak to some about politics and they and their elderly husbands (all of them) are voting for McCain because they still have traditional values, know how important it is to fight for this country, and are aware how dangerous raising taxes has always been. They feel this election is "the most important of their lives" because they want their grandchildren to have a future. They are panicked Obama could win. The article continues........
Some 53 percent of centenarians, who saw such course-changing elections as Franklin D. Roosevelt beating Herbert Hoover in 1932 and Ronald Reagan defeating incumbent Jimmy Carter in 1980, thought that the upcoming election, will be a key one in US history.
A full 70 percent said they intend to vote this year in the race between Democrat Barack Obama, who would be the first African-American president, and Vietnam war hero John McCain.

Z: Funny way to phrase it, isn't it? But effective. Listing Obama and that MOST IMPORTANT thing to vote for if you're a liberal...NOT the best prepared but that one "who would be the first African-American president..and..." oh, yes...."war hero John McCain." It sure looks like "a full 70 percent said they intended to vote this year FOR Democrat Barack Obama," doesn't it. Look at it again, scan it quickly like most readers do....sure it looks like that. Then we read.........
"I don't think I have missed an election since I was able to vote... I think everybody should have something to say in what's going on their life and not just take everything for granted," 100-year-old Marie Keeler told Evercare health care, which conducted the poll.
Z: The elderly I know think this is the most important vote in their life because our country needs a patriot, someone with great experience, who at least SOMETIMES says something GOOD about America. Maybe Marie Keeler feels the same, but the article doesn't say.
The Evercare survey was carried out between April 16 and May 4. (Article from Yahoo)
Z: Wouldn't you have thought they might have gone the mile, this "Evercare survey", and tell us WHO the centenarians are voting for? Why DIDN'T they? That's what polls usually do, no? Maybe they did, but Yahoo didn't like it?
Media bias again. Just in the way a piece is written. VERY powerful. Yahoo's about the worst and Google's practically stopped linking to the Conservative sites, and I suggested you Google "Republican images" and "Democrat images" and see what happens. Chuck followed my suggestion and said it was "incredible"....you'll see.
MORE MISLEADING INFORMATION I just heard this minute on L.A. radio:
"Jobs were up in American in the latest figures which just came out today...but THAT DOESN"T MEAN THE LABOR MARKET IS TURNING AROUND!" (GOD FORBID, huh? Don't let GOOD NEWS get in the way of the Left's gloom-n-doom pre-election negativity, right?)
BY THE WAY: I just did a Yahoo image search for "ELDERLY REPUBLICAN IMAGES" and John McCain is in the first picture! Subtle, huh? You can't make this stuff UP!!

Jobs reports. There are some preliminary indicators but the official report is Friday. The jobs market is still weak.
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Private employers added 9,000 jobs in July, according to a private report by ADP Employer Services released on Wednesday.
In June, the private sector slashed 77,000, according to revised data. June was originally reported as 79,000 jobs lost.
The median of estimates from economists surveyed by Reuters was for the ADP report to show a drop of 60,000 private-sector jobs in July. The 32 forecasts ranged widely from a decline of 110,000 to a fall of 4,000.
The ADP report comes ahead of the government's more comprehensive labor market report on Friday, which economists expect to show a decline 75,000 jobs. That would make July the seventh consecutive month of job losses for the world's largest economy.
Ducky, did it ever occur to you that the constant negativity could be HELPING the downturn just before this election?
FOR A YEAR, I've been naive enough to hear the news with REALLY good news followed by a "BUT...that doesn't mean things are good..." I kept asking myself "Why do they DO that?" Some caveats were pretty nonsequitor, too.
It took about 8 months for it to click into my head that the markets are doing this badly because the media's scared them half to death.
Do you have friends with stock like I do? It takes very little for some of them to freak and sell on the slightest provocation.
I'm not saying I blame this economy totally on the media, but the negativity hasn't helped a bit.
Who would HIRE PEOPLE with this constant threat of gloom 'n doom? ANYONE? Any employer would have to be an idiot! No matter how well their businesses were doing...."there's TROUBLE ahead" says the media. And trouble we got.
BY the way, every single June, the unemployment numbers skyrocket...It finally dawned on me that KIDS ARE OUT OF SCHOOL LOOKING FOR JOBS! Happens every year.
I'm happy for you that you can hang black crepe paper, too, but to underestimate the media's hand in this (which is my only point, I"m not here to argue employment figures) is naive and dangerous.
And, don't worry, we won't be the world's largest economy if your Obama comes in.
We'll be mediocre, run by the UN and an even bigger doormat for the world to wipe its feet on. Ducky, get out the champagne.
z, the job figures are not strong. That's a fact, not an opinion.
Stock? I bought $15,000 of Genentech a month ago at 72 --- it's at 95 today. I don't care what happens to the suckers.
and I'm telling you that's not my point.
And I know you don't care, Ducky.
congratulations and thanks.
it's somewhat like what the media was saying about the war. My buddies in Iraq were telling one story and the media was saying another.
I don't know. If the economy keeps falling the stock market figures are going to be as bad as they were during the Clinton administration.
z, the nature of financial markets is that there must be a risk/reward structure. No risk and you don't have the possibility of gain.
If people are going to bail then they are simply choosing not to accept further risk. Why is it that the right always seems to be the most upset when capitalism starts biting folks in the ass as it is want to do.
Uh Beamish, the market is at the level it was when Chucklenuts entered office.
If you've been dollar cost averaging during this great administration you haven't covered inflation.
z, the employment report is out today. 450,00.
That's a dismal job market although this figure is somewhat inflated by a recent extension of unemployment benefits.
Still ain't good and until the housing market bottoms there isn't much you can do to improve the situation.
Sure you can. You can vote for McCain and put us on the road to energy independence and avoid a tax induced Depression (the Obama Plan).
Today, they're saying we're not in a recession and that things are improving. Go figure. Don't let the media know, they'll just twist it so we don't know what's going on.
FJ..right.
AND! Before Obama decides to implement his ridiculous windfall tax and give people money that he WOULDN"T do just months ago because he said then, it wouldn't fix anything....GAS prices here??? Have gone down in the last three weeks from $4.0999 for midgrade to $3.799 for midgrade....but the media would RATHER focus on Obama's 'plan' of action because it FUELS the typical liberal mindset...TAX the PRODUCERS of wealth to GIVE to those who DO NOT produce...ugh.
