What COLD WAR? The truth about Russia...by Mr. Z

The most underrated danger in this world: RUSSIA

The fall of the wall only happened 17 years ago and today Russia has 101 billionaires, 40 of whom were added last year alone. These guys are mostly young, in their forties. How could that be? They are almost all in the energy business (in other words, resources given away by the state), and almost all of them have a link to the Ex-KGB head Mr. Bush called “my friend Vladimir”. Putin himself is considered one of the richest people in the world. What? And how? Well, as a “former” KGB guy, he knows how to conceal anything and how to play people. He is probably the only person in this world who is better than Saddam Hussein was in this field.

So, how's this make Russia dangerous? Let me put it this way: In some exceptional cases, I hate to be right! Follow me here... After the Iron Curtain fell in 1989, Germany became reunited in 1990 (mainly because of the stubbornness of Helmut Kohl and the farsightedness of President George H.W. Bush against the will of the Soviets) and the Soviet empire crumbled, most of the politicians in the West declared the cold war over. Consequently, in view of budget problems, most all of the Western countries dramatically reduced their expenditures for the Military. That was particularly true for those countries which were or later became governed by leftist governments (such as the U.S., and later Germany).

I said at that time: “Not so fast – the fight isn’t over with the remnants of communism in Russia”.

Boy, was I right on. Particularly since Putin has come to power, there is an absolutely ruthless use of power driving Russian politics. The examples are endless, so we will concentrate on only a few examples to make my point.

Russia has the largest reserves of energy in the world, but these reserves are treated only as a means to provide power to Russia and money to its ruling class.

For the last several years, Moscow has ruthlessly used the energy supply to blackmail the recipients of their supplies, forcing them to accept their demands. Numerous examples include cutting supplies to Belarus, Georgia, Ukraine, and Czech Republic (see this link!). The latest blackmailing is typical and one of the more bizarre ones: After the Czech Republic signed an agreement with the United States for the stationing of elements of the missile defense system, Moscow not only threatened military action, but also shortened the oil supply to the Czech Republic this week without giving further explanation.

Now, what is Russia’s main interest? Let me re-state that: What is the interest of those in Putin’s circle? Simple: Money and power. When you see how the Russian newly-riches act in Western Europe, you need a big bucket!! There is no graciousness about showing their richness – and no difference to the other energy rich camel riders from the ME. The arrogance makes everybody ion Europe speechless. Do you know what the biggest problem was when the Russian team made it to the Semifinal Soccer game in Basel/Switzerland a few weeks ago? Answer: There were not enough 5-star hotels in the area, and there was not enough space on the tarmac on the Basel/Mulhouse airport for the private planes.

These scenarios in Russia, with a few people owning so much while so many starve, have communist character (the leading class in such classless societies have always lived very well) combined with Mafia attitudes. Whoever gets into their way is killed, see the agent Litvinenko in London, just to provide one example.

Russia today uses its powers to the fullest extent and without regard to what everybody else thinks, including “friend” George W. Bush. As is usual in this age of total belief in the goodness of the United Nations, Russia follows its own interest with vigor and ruthlessness. Examples would include Zimbabwe, where action against that country was inhibited by a Veto of Russia, China and South Africa (you can easily identify the reasons for each of them). And the delivery of the most modern anti-missile system and nuclear technology to Iran is another typical example of action in their own, selfish interest against public opinion. Where is the outcry of the world community (if such a thing exists)? Can you imagine what would happen if the U.S. did something like that?

And to further prove the point: The Russian Republic uses a lot of its energy income to drastically enhance its military force. If everything is so peaceful, why are they doing that, while at the same time the U.S. is continually reducing its military power?

Read my lips: Beware of Russia. The leaders are not a peaceful or altruistic bunch!

Z would like to add here that I've been saying the following for YEARS when I've seen the kind of nonthinking, Marxist-loving automatons our universities are producing lately: "They let us think WE won the Cold War by putting their missiles down and simply sent the professors into the US to get us from within."

Your Mr. ZIN has forgotten a very important and crucial point about RUSSIA.

Mr. ZIN has Forgotten that Russia was the EX CCCP.

The huge EXTREMELY powerfull CCCP was exploded from inside, without any external military operation and it's reduced to the actual RUSSIA, WHY, and how??

Why and HOW an EXTREM POWER is collapsed and reduced to an 1 tenth of it's previous state??

The answer is, the CCCP was collapsed by two forces,

1 - LACK of Democracy
2 - Extreme Corruption of the leadership of the Communist party of CCCP.

The LACK of Democracy results the loss of the trust of the people to their system.

and Corruption results the abime of the power and the oxcidation of the institutions.

Now, would you please question MR ZIN, "HOW THE RUSSIA of today will gain his credibility to resetle his power again?".

VERY DEAR MADAME ZIN;
The power is not the military tools nor the wealth of the leaders, the power is the SUM of the trust of all the individuals of a nation in their institutions and constitutions.

WHY the USA is the SUPER POWER?

And why even china is not a power?

SO, a castle of the most corrupted leaders like PUTIN and alike can not stand the unified power of a free nation like the Americans.

SO, the moral of this story is;

VIVA DEMOCRACY;

SAY hello to Mr. ZIN and offer him a great cup of hot milk with too much CHOCOLAT SWISS inside, it's very good for the nerves.

Still alive

SAM..you say "The power is not the military tools nor the wealth of the leaders, the power is the SUM of the trust of all the individuals of a nation in their institutions and constitutions."

This is why America will soon NOT be the world's super power...our leftist teachers and media have created a new atmosphere where the LAST country our young people respect is America's capitalism, constitution, etc.

I don't QUITE see your point here..it sounds like you don't agree with Mr. Z, and I think what he wrote is pretty compelling... of course nobody's forgotten the CCCP (called USSR here).... I'll let him respond.

I am so glad you posted a comment and am VERY glad you are "still alive"... I don't like how you wrote that, though. (were you ever in LA yet?!)

Sam:

I know it sounds strange, but the point is that we shouldn't underestimate Russia. I agree with you that theoretically democratic countries are strong through the power of the people.

However: We in the West weaken ourselves on a daily basis, militarily, economically and otherwise (morally, for instance) / that is what too much democracy does. On the other hand, countries like Russia and China, which don't care about what people (or other countries) say, will be on the rise. If we don't pay attention, the US will not be superpower anymore (if Obama is elected that is for sure) and the others will be.

And to come back to your first point: The downfall of the CCCP was only temporarily - they may call what they have now a "democracy", in reality the structures and principles are the same as before, a class of corrupt leaders, who use the capitalism to their advantage, and the large majority of the people still poor and drunk.

Unfortunately, I believe I am right. I wished it was not the case.

Hello Mr. ZIN;

I'm in the other side of the wall, and I see the things differently,

the most corrupted US government from 30 years ago till now was the clinton administration, maybe carter was worse, but, both of them surrended against the Islamism and brought the world at it's actual pitfull state.

I say Pitfull state, Because it is enough to see what happens in the Persian Gulf.

We have the US MILITARY FLOATS plus UK MARINES and even PACIFIC FRENCH BIGGEST FLOAT in the Persian GULF.

I'm sur YOU KNOW WHY.

the price of the petrole is skyrocketing, and the primitive Mullahs feel themselves very strong!!!

EVEN at this confusing atmosphere, something makes you different from the Russians and Chinees.

Last month I came to France, and I found one of my friends, he has married a Russian Doctoress,

Now she speaks french, She is from Moldavi, She has accepted a very low job in a clinic with a half salary of a nurse in france, but she was an skillfull anesthesiste in Moldavi.

She likes her town, her mother and father who are living there in Moldavi, this is what is left from her patriotism.

When she speaks about Russia, you hear only and only the INFLUENCE and CORRUPTION of the dicider class.

There you have to paye a BAKSHISH to have a job, even for a job of teacher, doctor, policeman, everything, and absolutly everything.

With a people like this, how do you expect the RUSSIA to become a superpower again?

With your corrupted Democrats, you have a choice, the Democracy, you can choose and elect something else eache 4 years, But, the Russians and Chinees, what they have?

Your Democracy is your power, your freedom of doing what you want, your freedom of enterprise.

Believe me the Corruption of Clinton was not less than Yelsin and Putin.

Imagin one second that if CHINA stops his repression for even one day, the state of CHIN COMMUNIST will be extinguished for ever.

My Iranian compatriots are living in a similar condition.

As you have heard, Israel and USA have warned the Mullahs of IRAN for an AirStike;

Do you know what is the Mullahs reaction? and how they are going to defend the country, and how they are going to retaliate?

I leave you to answer,

I'm eager to see how you percieve this kind of situations.

My tendancy is to believe that Russia is more likely to implode from inside than become a true threat.
With this said though, with their natural resources, they are definitely a threat that has to be taken seriously. It is true that Russia has a lot of powerful people but ultimately, it is the people that make a country strong.
I agree that the Dems are trying to neuter the US but I think there are enough of us to prevent it. I believe the US is strong enough to withstand the Dem onslaught and emerge just as vibrant as it always has been.

the first element of Russia to remember is they had always been an oppressed people. From the tsars to lenin to andropov. But never discount them. That is a fault of our academic and political arrogance. The second putin started his power plays you could tell this guy new the balance of the CCCP days and what capitalism can bring. He now has his puppet in power, billionaires in debt or fear ... he is a smart cookie

[3] And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
[4] And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
[5] Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
[6] Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.
[7] Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.

That includes; Russia and her allies, and if you look, Russia has made treaties within the last 5-6 years with ALL of those nations. Persia(Iran), Libya, Turkey, the northern part of Ethiopia...and the area of Magog includes Georgia and several of the 'stans...all mohammadin.
Russia WILL be an aggressive enemy, he will cause disruption and destabilization in the ME.
They think to destroy Israel, all for alliance with oil and money.

In a country full of people with family and friends that were killed, exiled, imprisoned or otherwise removed from society, when "da Cold War" ended and "Communism died" I expected to see massive uprisings of people hellbent for vengeance.

It didn't happen.

Instead, one nation ruled by Communists became 12 nations ruled by "former" Communists.

Welcome to the Lukewarm War.

mr. z though the "power" of the russian government may have reinforced itself as it were, do you think the people of russia enjoy a "freer" existence today then ever before? and if so do you see the government of russia ever being able to stop that advancement?

"...and how to play people."

That can be misconstrued as being painless, jovial, pleasant even. But jugding from the number of Putin's critics who end up dead, he really knows how to play people.

“Not so fast – the fight isn’t over with the remnants of communism in Russia”

Exactly, you see not enough people see communism as evil, if you see it as evil, then you have to know that the fight against evil is never over. It's not a war that we can win, we can only fight it, win the odd battle and perhaps keep it at bay temporarily.

"...while at the same time the U.S. is continually reducing its military power?"

And that reduction will be accelerated under an Obambi administration. The weird thing that i find is that other nations prefer Obambi to a Republican who naturally lean towards a strong military. Just about every poll will tell us that most non-America westerners prefer B. Hussein to John McCain. It has escaped most of us outside America that a militarily weaker America is bad for the rest of us as well. I mean who apart from America can stand up to the Communists of this world? And don't forget the Jihadists, take America out of the picture and who can stop Iran from getting their nuke.

It's like we're all living in cuckoo land or something.

I have something SIMPLISTIC to add:

Ever since the collapse of the USSR, I have remained nervous and highly suspicious of Russia, BECAUSE they KEPT all those ICBMS, we LET them do it.

There is no ViCTORY unless your enemy is rendered completely HELPLESS and dependent on YOU.

After they've been reduced to that pitiable condition, it is then possible to rebuild a former enemy nation from the ground up as we did with Japan and Germany after WWII.

The story of our relationship with Russia is sadly ironic. We both share a common enemy and we really should try harder to get along.

Putin stands in the way, however. I don't understand why he'd think we would attack his country.

But I do know this - if we attack Iran, all hell will break loose. Enter biblical prophecy.

The complexities of global politics cannot be understated. Once again, Mr. Z provides us with a thought-provoking essay, and I think he is correct in observing and analyzing events in Russia. From an historic perspective, we might consider that Russians are behaving as they always have; ruthlessly. One of my principal criticisms of our government is that it too often appears incapable of juggling more than two problems simultaneously. Two balls in the air do not a juggler make. As we focus on Afghanistan and Iraq, have we overlooked Medvedev and Putin running around garnering alliances with the Islamic countries bordering Russia, including a rather sophisticated relationship with Iran? Russia would not invest millions of dollars in the nuclear development of Iran if it did not consider that doing so was in its best national interests. Steve is correct to suggest that a US involvement with Iran would create a very serious, and a very deadly confrontation with Russia.

Russia was not happy with US recognition of Kosovo … and it is my belief the final chapter of this story may not have a successful conclusion, in either the Balkans or here at home. I have written about this dumb move at my blog, and suggested that considering the historic associations between Serbia and Russia. In this case, I agree with Russia that US recognition of Hezbollah controlled Kosovo was a travesty of justice and of diplomacy.

The US is also not watching China close enough … a nation that today owns most of the United States through investments, through our reliance upon Chinese made goods, and our government’s borrowing from the Chinese. China is presently engaged in its most ambitious naval development program in the past two thousand years. China is drilling oil off the coast of Cuba. China is providing “military assistance” to numerous South American countries. China is the decision maker in matters involving North Korea … and so we should not be surprised that the Japanese are feeling nervous about China, nor that the Japanese believe the US has left them holding the bag in that region of the world.

Russia remains a dangerous player in world politics, but they aren’t the only danger. The value of this essay, over and above the obviously exceptional observations, is to remind us that we are living at a dangerous time. This is not the time to hire an idealistic presidential candidate. Russia, China, North Korea, Iran are vultures waiting to feast upon America’s carcass. If we aren’t careful … if we the people hire the wrong guy to become our president, we are going to be in serious – and I mean deadly – trouble.

Thank you all for your thoughtful comments. Time permitting, I will later add remarks to issues raised.

Let me just mention two issues here:

If FT mentions that we won the Cold War, but is was rather a "soft win" because the opponent was not on the knees - he is absolutely right. I hadn't thought about it the same way. It turn out that there is enough substance existing in the ex-CCCP for quasi communist forces to rise under a different name.

And Mustang is right to say that the purpose was to raise awareness about the dark forces in this world which are ready to step in if and when the U.S. fails. And yes, we need to hire a CEO who recognizes the ambitions of Russia and China and doesn't give in to the UN. And B. Hussein Obama ain't it.

Looks like it's all been said here; the only thing I can add is that when people consider Russia a 'friend,' I can't help but wonder just where they think all the communist leaders went after the Cold War.

The more things 'change'...

Yes, Mustang, I agree, but the truth is that we've been in deadly trouble ever since Ronald Reagan left office.

I'm sorry, but both the Bushes have provided limp-wristed, half-hearted, utterly dispassionate, tone-deaf, non-leadership. We would never have given a vain pretentious scoundrel like Boy Clinton a chance at the presidency if George H.W. Bush had behaved with any noticeable degree of dynamism and an aura of deep personal commitment to America first, foremost and always.

The performance of George I made the emergence of a figure like H. Ross Perot possible. That in turn made the election of Clintoon an inevitability.

I know the present George Bush has been handicapped by a fierce, dedicated, relentless assault on the part of the enemedia, but with the single exception of the too-late-in-the-game hiring of Tony Snow as White House Press Secretary, GWB has done nothing to repel, deflect or neutralize the campaign against him. Sorry, but I find that pusillanimous.

I'm very much afraid that as George I gave us Clintoon, George II will hand us over to Obama.

The USA right now must appear on the world's stage like a ship without a rudder headed for the rocks. Our captain hasn't behaved like a captain, and has thus invited a degree of dissension tantamount to mutiny.

Is it any wonder that no one fears us anymore, and that enemies old and new have become increasingly emboldened?

Our problems seem obvious enough, but I see no hope of solving them with the imbeciles we've put in power.

The 9% Congress and the 28% president should be forcibly retired. But then we must ask, "What rough beast slouches on its way to Washington?"

Frankly, I shudder to think.

Mr Z, I completely agree with your assessment of Russia as the venomous snake in the grass that nobody seems to be noticing. Putin was the symbol of the raw lust for money and power that seems to have infected neo-capitalist Russia. This country is no friend of Israel or the west either. Just this week, Russians were reported as making harsh comments about Israel, not to mention, the murders carried out on British soil of Russian dissidents during Putin's tenure. Yes, I think you're right we have lots to be concerned about.

Anonymous said...

Mr. Z,
Of course Russia is a country to be worried about. After the wall fell, first Bush senior cut our defense budget.

Then, when Clinton became President he cut it again leaving our military capability at about half the size it was during Reagan's Administration.

He also decimated the intelligence budget, and called these moves a "peace dividend".

These actions were, at best, foolhardy and shortsighted. A signal to the world that the U.S. was no longer interested in "peace through strength" which was Reagans fundamental philosophy.

This was an invitation to other powers in the world to flex their muscles. Yeltsin it seemed to me was satisfied to be merely a caretaker.

Putin is not stupid. He had breathing room to solidify his power, and to make Russia a serious player.

Meanwhile the current President Bush facing the reality of 9-11 and the need for a stronger defense, and intelligence capability, began with much less capability than he would have had
if Clinton had had any vision at all.

Because of Clinton's naivete, Russia was allowed to get off defense and go on offense politically and diplomatically. Meanwhile building up Russia's military.

Reagan had the Russians nervous, and more inclined not to rock the boat, so to speak. They really did believe he was a cowboy, and unpredictable. (I loved that)Keep 'em guessing.

Yes, Mr. Z is right, we must keep a wary eye on Russia along with all the other challenges we face.

One more thing, don't forget China.

It is all a big game on a chess board though.
