A favorite of mine is dead...

The Band's LEVON HELM has died of cancer.  I'm an enormous BAND fan and use any excuse to blog one of their tunes.  This one's for Levon, the only American in The Band.

The message below, in italics, was already on the YouTube under THE WEIGHT(the song above):  (it was posted 2 hours before I got there....and before I clicked off the "Dinner with Obama" that Google has plastered on YouTube videos until you click them off.  Which I did. Immediately.)
He was my bosom buddy friend to the end, one of the last true great spirits of my or any other generation. This is just so sad to talk about. I still can remember the first day I met him and the last day I saw him. We go back pretty far and had been through some trials together. I'm going to miss him, as I'm sure a whole lot of others will too.
Bob Dylan

I sure will.   God bless and keep you, Levon....thanks for the music.  "Take a load off.."

"Levon digs the doghouse, playing in The Band,
when he locks in to that backbeat it ain't hard to understand.
Get your body movin', celebrate your soul,
Levon digs the doghouse, that's sho-nuff rock and roll."

I checked Imus this morning knowing that he would talk about his friend Levon and, sure enough, not 2 seconds into it, he mentioned him and continued to talk about him during the rest of the show.

This was the first year in very many that Levon didn't perform on Imus' radiothon.

First Fred and now Levon. It's not been a good few months for Imus.

Gotta get out my copy of The Last Waltz and watch it this weekend.

God rest your beautiful musical soul, Levon...

Joe Cons....that was written around the time of his throat cancer diagnosis...thanks SO much for finding and posting it..what amazing words for today, now that he's gone away.

Sue, I have to admit that I'm SUCH a HUGE BAND FAN that I never paid much attention to any of their solo work! I'm glad Joe C posted this; it's good, I'll have to find more.

My pleasure. I'm sure Levom would have appreciated something in the jazz funeral tradition.

Z,
I remember that you said that one of your favorite songs was "The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down." Levon was without a doubt the heart of The Band. I've loved his Southern Rock roots most of my life. He really was the genesis of that genre. Talent like his will be missed because there are no replacements for groups like "The Band." It's a loss but music moves on. It's good you posted this.

Law and Order Teacher! I miss you and your blog and am so glad you came by tonight.
Know that you're wished the very best...xx

I love what you wrote about Levon...I was just telling my German stepson how much I love Southern Rock and how Levon (and THE BAND) was THE MAN. I just saw quite an old interview with him and Robby Robertson (my stepson said "Man, HE's not too loaded!" ..Robertson looked like he was flying, sadly)...Levon was clear-eyed and articulate....and wonderful, as usual. I hate to think how much he suffered having had throat cancer. God rest his sweet, talented soul. I hope he's up there now singing Southern Rock versions of THE OLD RUGGED CROSS and JUST AS I AM :-)

Come back, Law and Order, you're really missed.

Z,
As I said,I check in with you almost everyday. I knew you would post about Levon. I'll miss his music, but thankfully there's You Tube and CDs. I miss writing and I've been itching to get back into it. I may do that soon. Until then I'll read your blog and enjoy it. Good talking to you.
