Right now? It represents a people so hooked on cheap oil and so desperate to forestall change that they won't even think about the long term.
Hard to say if our best days are long behind us and we are just sad victims of comfort. The Baggers indicate the answer is yes.

I knew Ducky would leap, mouth frothing, at the chance to disparage this country and this flag, regardless that the most leftist man in the Senate, the man he voted for, is now in charge.
No surprise there.
The flag of course has great historic and symbolic meaning, both of which should be respected!
I don't usually mix it up with Ducky because it's as futile as
talking sense to a brick wall, but his statement that Obama is a centrist did make me chortle.

Brooke, the flag represents all of that and certainly should be respected.
To me, it is a symbol of cohesion: freedom loving people, standing together in good times, and in bad, to preserve and protect all of those who love liberty, equality, and the virtues of Americanism. It is the symbol of the greatest sacrifices; of men and women laying down their lives for an idea —that idea being that there are things more important than our own safety and comfort. Whether these are military personnel, or first responders, or simply average people who risked their life to save another … I believe our flag rather represents what Abraham Lincoln attempted to explain to us on a day in November, 1863. He said, in part, “that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion —that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain —that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom —and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. This is what our flag means to me.
Ducky’s comment is a startling reminder that indeed, some men and women have died in vein.
And today is also the anniversary of the founding of the United States Army.

Thanks Z, and thanks to every man and woman who has loyally and honorably served the country, whether in the military or elsewhere. It kind of makes me wish I wasn't in a third world country now. Perhaps Ducky's ilk needs to spend some time in a place like this to appreciate how great things are in the US, even in times like these.

Left and right are concepts. This scale is actually an oversimplification as you may all know. I'm repeating again but there's little difference between what the left think is far right like Hitler and Stalin. I love to remind to lefty imbeciles that the French guy who sent jewish kids to camps was socialist. I think the Libertarian quadrant is a lot more accurate. The real distinction is between authoritarian and freedom ideas.
About the flag: it's the best looking flag. I love it.
The mistake you make Will is:
1. Assuming positive conditions in the U.S. are products of the right.

The flag represents everything I love abot America. To me, it represents freedom, and every brave sacrifice made to preserve it.
We used to fly our flag on every holiday celebrating America. Since 9-11, our flag has been flying every day.

It's all relative, right? If you're a devout anti-semite Stalinist like Ducky, Obama is indeed a centrist and I'm a far right nut.
All of this political is getting meaningless these days. It's the Statist against US.
Z, I'm on an island, a tropical paradise where cruise ships stop by several times a week. Its also a place where the police stop cars looking for bribes or handouts, where it is simpler to pay to have someone killed rather than pay back a debt, and where girls look forward to being old enough to have a baby so someone will give them money.
Roatan Honduras is where I am. I believe G-d wanted me here, so I work to make a living with websites and computer repair. The electricity goes off at the worst times, but the bill comes to about $1,000 per month for the small office I'm in. The water is on and off as well, but you don't drink what comes from the taps.
The biggest reason I may return to the US is to help return it to what I remember, the greatest country the world has ever known. As far as I can recall, that has never been said of any socialist regime!

We had some missionary friends with TWR who were there.
EB, many come here to help. It seems to me that education is the greatest need, followed by medical and spiritual help. Poverty and ignorance have great inertia. Still, changing the world is best done by changing one life at a time.
