Manute Bol, basketball player, dies at 47

This guy was 7'6" (some reports say 7'7"), the second tallest player ever in the NBA. I feel really sad that he's died so young. Just thought I'd mention it. Rest in Peace, Manute.

Only 47. I'm not familiar with this player, but still, to die at such a young age, is very sad.

Probably complications from his extreme height.

By all accounts he was a very gentle man.

He was and he played for the DC Wizards/Bullets, the team I used to go see very often. Very sad.

Intersting bit of info from wikipedia:

Bol was very active in charitable causes throughout his career. In fact, he says he spent much of the money he made during a 10-year NBA career supporting various causes related to his war-ravaged nation of birth, Sudan.[14] He frequently visited Sudanese refugee camps, where he was treated like royalty. In 2001 Bol was offered a post as minister of sport by the Sudanese government. Bol, who is Christian, refused because one of the pre-conditions was converting to Islam.

He was a Christian who turned down a very lucrative position while in Sudan-because he refused to convert to islam--the type of individual to whom should be given honor for bravery...

He died of a painful skin situation and very bad kidney condition...very sad.

Thanks, RK and Carol, I hadn't heard about his Christian stance...God bless him.

FB, it is sad, isn't it. He always seemed so dignified.

Wonderful to know about this Christian man who gave so much to help the victims of Muslims in his home country, and had a true Christian forgiving spirit. What a great example. Thanks for the links.

Z,
About all I have to go on is the wikipedia entry on him and the article you linked to. Based on those, he seems to have been an extraordinary person.

Spending his money earned in NBA to help his native Sudan. Refusing a job from Sudanese goverment because he'd be forced to renounce is Christian faith. Doing publicity stunts (celebrity fight, hockey) so he could continue his charitable contributions. He sounds like he was quite an amazing person.

Incidentally, the yahoo article, rather than applaud his character and courage for sticking to his faith, talked about him having a gambling problem. Seemed a bit inappropriate.

Thanks for this. I didn't know any of this. Praise God that he was so willing to be used by God, even while under persecution. Wow. What a witness...

7,7 wow that's tall. I remember a long time ago seeing the tallest man's car, the fellow had to sit in the back seat.
