Obama v Petreus....who do you feel more comfortable with?

White House: July 2011 Afghan withdrawal 'firm'

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is reaffirming its pledge to begin pulling U.S. Toops out of Afghanistan next summer.

But the Pentagon and the White House are still saying different things about how many troops will leave — and when.

President Barack Obama's Chief of Staff tells ABC's "This Week" that the July 2011 date to begin withdrawal is firm. Emanuel isn't disputing quoted remarks from Vice President Joe Biden that "a whole lot" of troops would leave.*

Gen. David Petreus who oversees the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, told Congress last week that he'd recommend putting off the withdrawal if need be. He said security conditions and the Afghan government have to be ready to handle a U.S. drawdown.

Z: Imagine if any country in the history of the world had told its enemy when it was leaving? The experts on the ground believe this isn't a good idea, of course. But, apparently, our White House Commander in Chief knows better.

Do you think we should tell the people of Afghanistan "a whole lot" of troops will be leaving (I wonder if Biden could have picked different words than that?) Is it a good idea to tell our enemies ANYTHING about our tactics, as if we're giving tips to our enemy? We can't be there forever, God forbid, nobody wants that, but it's seems so counter intuitive to tell enemy factions our exit plan, dates, numbers (if "whole lot" means anything to anybody), it sends such a message to Afghanistan that America doesn't trust the input of our military commanders, doesn't it? But, OBAMA KNOWS better. REALLY? How?

What do you think? Is this for Obama's political situation at home....playing to the very far left, the "war is never the answer... he TOLD us we'd be leaving Afghanistan!" gang? Because, of course, nobody ever tells an enemy when he's leaving. A fifth grader knows what happens then.

* Robert Gates is getting me more and more nervous. He said this morning that he didn't think Biden had said this...that it was only printed somewhere but HE hadn't heard him and he couldn't imagine he had. Robert Gates has become a HACK. Just what we need in a Secretary of Defense.

Is that a rhetorical question?

Petreus off course, but i'm sure ol quacky will come screaming in here to tell us otherwise, in 4,3,2...

He knows what the situation is. I trust his judgment more than that of BHO.

I read in yesterday's WaPo about how discouraged our troops are in Afghanistan. The Afghanis do not want to turn over the Taliban! It's the tribal thing.

In other words, the war in Afghanistan is a mess and deteriorating daily. Troops are counting down the days as to when their tours of duty will be over. Such wasn't the case a few years ago when many troops re-upped.

I'd feel more comfortable with Don Corleone than with Obama.

Sam Huntington said...

Oh I don't know ... I'm getting used to Beavis and Butthead running this country. And what does Petreus really know? He's just a military man, after all and that means his PhD doesn't mean a thing.

The Obama message isn’t only about withdrawing from Afghanistan in June 2011; it is also about what the Taliban need to do in order to defeat the present Afghan government and by extension, the United States of America.

Imagine if you were an Afghan soldier. Should you really put your rear end on the line between now and the next twelve to fifteen months? Within this timeframe, the Taliban will be back in charge and if you happened to have served as an Afghan soldier, then you are an infidel —and you-will-be-killed. And of course, the practice of murdering or mutilating women in the soccer stadium will return.

Under such conditions as these —in which the US tossed still another ally under the bus —the only possible path to survival is to give the Taliban what it wants. Now extrapolate this situation to other countries; why should Iran buckle under to UN sanctions? Why should anyone listen to anything American diplomats tell them? Why should Iraq maintain its limited democracy? And why in the world should any nation ever ‘back’ American foreign policy? Pakistan won’t. India won’t. Russia and China are laughing themselves silly. North Korean submarines are planning to sink a US Navy destroyer. I can almost hear the collective sigh of millions of Persians who for a brief moment thought that they might yet become free again.

I’m sure it is only a simple matter that these people throughout the world simply don’t understand the hope and change aspects of American foreign policy. I'm not sure Americans can be trusted with sound domestic policies, either.

Are we talking Obama vs. Petreus in a presidential election?

Well, Petreus would win, but then again, no contest. Even my dirty socks would poll a solid 15% ahead of Obama despite having a birth certificate that says "made in China."

I can think of at least 10 candidates I'd love to see run against Obama in 2012. Petreus isn't one of them. He's a good soldier in a bad situation, commanded by a President who quite likely has a negative number IQ.

Personally, I started seeing Afghanistan as a wasted effort when the Staple Gun Loader in Chief and his equally inept Secretary of State wrapped their global diplomacy blitz that resulted in the lost of air basing and flyover rights in Central Asia, a resurgeance in Kyrgyzstani Islamic violence likely to spread, and such a FUBAR sitch that now US and NATO supply lines run undefended from ports in Pakistan though Taliban country and a gauntlet of daily attacks before what's left of the supplies even reach our troops.

And now the Afghan government is looking at joining the Taliban now so the Taliban's own surge strategy after we up and leave doesn't behead too many of them.

I don't envy Gen. Petreus. Imagine having to tell the boss than an honest assessment of the situation is that the President of the United States is a freakin' leftist retard.

This is not to say that we don't need to be in Afghanistan. We just need to be doing it right or wind up having to go back there in 10 years or less.

Sizeable lithium deposits have been recently discovered in Afghanistan, enough to develop to make Afghanistan a prosperous modern nation and supplier of minerals more useful to the industrialized world than heroin and terrorism.

But this alternative course for Afghanistan can't be realized if the conflict between the 7th Century and the 21st Century is not resolved.

Who wants a Taliban terror state rich with lithium trade money?

I think we should take credit for helping turn Afghanistan into one big heroin lab.

There's a potential new civil war just north of Afghanistan which should keep the region hot.

The drone flights continue to kill civilians and alienate the population, the Afghan army is a mess of deserters and black marketeers.

Time to declare victory and pull out. Interesting that the story about mineral deposits came out recently even though its been known internally for some time. Poor Afghanistan, if we work hard bringing freedom they can be the next Congo.

Ah yes. We should. If only to demonstrate to the world that our time travel technology is strong enough to force 7th Century Muslims to have spread Islam and opiate habits as far east as China.

It's a good thing too. Russia's voracious demand for opium and heroin would have had to settle for the supply crops grown in Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan,
Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, India, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam grown since the mid 8th Century had it not been for our timely efforts to fill the donut hole there in Afghanistan with dope farmers.

Way to get that obligatory clueless leftist historical observation out of the way early, Ducky.

Its really interesting that all the libs supported our effort in Afghanistan as opposed to the war in Iraq. Afghanistan was supposedly the war we were suppose to be fighting, according to Obama. At least, until he got elected.

Times are changing in Afghanistan with the country poised to become "the Saudi Arabia of lithium" in the brave new world of the near future.

Apparently the American military has advanced the discoveries of Soviet "mining engineers" from decades ago and a trillion dollars of "precious metals" could be developed there. It likely all depends if the American taxpayers can be coerced into paying for the development likely in time to be turned over the "progressive" thinkers of the Taliban — the 7th Century first cousins of the "progressive" Obama deep thinking uni-brow lib/left/progressives. Where will they get their heroin when mining replaces the poppy?

I imagine what will happen now is that Russia will throw all of its support behind the Taliban in order to achieve their final victory in Afghanistan, and then make a massive deal with the new Taliban government to mine lithium. Russia doesn’t give a damn what the oppressive Taliban do to women and children and miscreant men—and neither does the American left no matter what their rhetoric on Air America Radio. Daffy has to be wetting himself.

I’ve said from the beginning that Afghanistan is the wrong place for a war; we could not win there even if the commander in chief were competent. A capable president wouldn’t have opened that door in the first place; an efficient government would have dedicated itself to winning there, no matter what the cost to the hapless captives to barbarianism. As it is now, we have only signaled weakness to the Moslem world —we will pay dearly for our bungled foreign policy.

I could be wrong, but think Beamish's main point was that America is not single-handedly responsible for the proliferation of the world drug trade. It was flourishing long before we were ever a nation.

So Ducky, you brought up the "world drug problem" in conjunction with the US illegal Mexican occupation issue, as well.

Why do you think all our problems stem from drug trafficking--and that it's all America's fault?

Why aren't the DHS people going after them instead of the one white militia group they're hounding?..Let's put in firewalls as you'd suggested on your terrific blog on privacy and keep terrorists off the net, not white Christian bloggers!!....PC only applies to muslims, apparently)...and we will definitely pay for it.

This president is now trying to backslide out of comments to KYL, apparently... Did you hear this: "The problem is, (Obama) said, if we secure the border, then you all won't have any reason to support comprehensive immigration reform," Kyl said, as the crowd in the room gasped loudly. "In other words, they're holding it hostage."

Of course, the WH is denying it..."Kyl knows Obama never said that" is what they're saying. Odd, because nobody was in the mtg other than Kyl and Obama, but we're to believe the Obama thugs.

I mention this because it's yet another example of political planning which favors Obama, not our country. Setting times for getting out of Afghanistan just to please his base, not protecting the border because he won't get his base's idea of immigration reform supported.........
This president needs to read the constitution, get in touch with America and maybe even start liking it, and then make decisions which benefit the COUNTRY, not pay back SEIU and excite his Harvard buddies.

The sarcasm of Robert Gibbs, the sliminess of Emanuel, the cluelessness of Geithner, the dismissiveness and tone deafness of the Obamas.... here are people who grew up hearing from their hippie parents that this country's never done anything good ...Ayers' influence, Frank Marshall's influence, Jeremiah Wright's influence, Harvard profs' influence, ettc etc etc etc ...have all created a situation to where we've got college wet-behind-the-ears academics running the country ..people who were taught Washington had a slave so nothing he could ever do is worth anything..that Columbus's men might have raped a woman so let's rewrite history...Christian faith is wrong because it's not inclusive and hates gays and women(!) FDR is a hero for starting Americans on the welfare gravy train thereby creating more Democrats "Let's follow that line with the Latino immigration laxness..bring 'em ALL IN!"...etc etc etc
How much more can I write? we all know this.
They have ZERO knowledge, ZERO appreciation for our country and ZERO experience. And they're the boss now and BROTHER, are they using it.

By the way..why can't the term IMMIGRATION REFORM mean : Get them ALL OUT and start bringing them in after background checks and proof they can support themselves here? Why does REFORM seem today to mean "LET 'EM ALL IN!"??? I don't get it. Or a FIVE YEAR MORATORIUM on ANY immigration.. until we've gone through who we've got here now and settled that score in some manner....

Please, America, start erring on OUR SIDE. We already have the huge disadvantage that the islamists don't have to read miranda rights, they don't have their journalists with cameras recording every battle and excoriating their side for having broken some military law, they can hide in mosques and shoot because our men can't shoot at mosques, they can protect their own as they're given notice before we can search their homes!! You can't make this up.
And the left REALLY thinks we can get anywhere with their idiot mentality that WE are the bad guys?
WOW.

Mustang is right...shoot to win or take our guns home. Wait for it. If you don't understand history, you're doomed to relive it.

For Ducky:

This form your newspaper of record, The NYT: "Armed with the old Russian charts, the United States Geological Survey began a series of aerial surveys of Afghanistan’s mineral resources in 2006, using advanced gravity and magnetic measuring equipment attached to an old Navy Orion P-3 aircraft that flew over about 70 percent of the country.

The data from those flights was so promising that in 2007, the geologists returned for an even more sophisticated study, using an old British bomber equipped with instruments that offered a three-dimensional profile of mineral deposits below the earth’s surface. It was the most comprehensive geologic survey of Afghanistan ever conducted.

The handful of American geologists who pored over the new data said the results were astonishing. "

You'll have to explain this one Ducky. How did the Chinese do THAT?

Who here thinks it's a really good idea to tell Afghanistan when we're leaving, please? I'd really like to hear that viewpoint.

And, some of you are alluding to America as not holding the place in the world it did since its existance.

If our media had gone along with Bush in understanding why it was necessary to unseat Saddam.........if they'd admitted that anything that can kill 300,000 Kurds just MIGHT be a weapon of MASS DESTRUCTION, if we'd listened to the Iraqi general (saed?) who said they'd taken the WMD to Syria (Mr Z, I can say now, worked in Iraq in an extremely related field and believed that to be the case; he also knew that Schwarzkopf was wrong when he first said they'd got all the Iraqi jets the first day during the Gulf War...Mr Z told me "They're in bunkers..he's dreaming" and, of course, S said the next day 'they're in bunkers, we didn't know').....but I digress:
(real comforting feeling to know my German husband knows more than our intel....NOT)

If America had continued to back Bush as vehemently as they seemed to have after 9/11 (I was living in Paris then so I missed all the support, the flags, etc.but I have heard of it) and hadn't taken off on him, condemning everything for all the world to see, even disdaining Americans for wearing flag pins and the meaning behind that (it's the meaning, after all, who really cared if you wore one?), etc., do you all think we'd be in this position now? After all, the Obama types were up on the top of that Bush-Condemning thuggery and, in fact, still do.

I don't release Bush from all guilt on how Iraq was run, believe me (Mr Z thought we shouldn't go in at all), but I can't help wondering about whether that loud, insulting, really crude and constant attack on Bush didn't help the world join that leftist 'gravy train' and has done us a lot of harm NOW.
Not to mention that our president now is one who believes America doesn't deserve to be the exceptional country she IS, having been admired by all of the world for years.........and the media's on his side and, so seems to be the world.......

highboy said...

Good points z. The funny thing about what Bush did in Iraq was that if he actually tried to defend the war he could have very easily. Before we went in, the list of WMDs we were searching for had yellow cake and sarin gas on it, even the U.N. agreed. But once we found 550 metric tons of yellow cake and an equal amount of sarin gas munitions the democrats and the UN decided they weren't really WMDs, only components to make them. The sarin gas munitions got labeled as "inoperable" because they were supposedly 15 years old. The military thought they were dangerous, but apparently democrats playing politics know better than actual soldiers on the ground. I'm no Bush fan but its a testament to the laziness and apathy of the American people not to pay attention and just believe whatever media hacks on CNN tell them. If the media would have reported the findings the way the military found them support for the war would have went through the roof.

Z said...

highboy, thanks, and your facts are correct.
You have to wonder if this was a preconceived, concerted attempt to start cutting away at America's strength and righteousness by the Left/media, etc.
Oh, what am I SAYING? Of course it was because it was ANYBODY BUT BUSH after that. They maligned and demeaned HIM (in their zeal to do the same to America) and then got elected on that....
So, they get their guy elected and he's an America hater, too..and off we go.

I just watched Beck, something I hate to do because he's got so much information America's not hearing and that scares me.

Did you know that we've guaranteed a loan to a successful Brazilian oil company which Soros is a huge stock holder in? Ya, we have a six month moratorium on drilling because it's so unsafe to drill at 1500' but we're loaning our Chinese money to SOros' company to drill 14,000 feet into the sea....
I wish we had an honest media.
When Gibbs was asked about this at a press conf, he "didn't know anything about it". Ya, right.
And the left hates Beck. Now we can see why.

Saddam used gas on 300,000 Kurds? Sheer inanity. He did use gas on a village and caused the equivalent destruction of a Likud air strike over Gaza. WMD? Bore me later.

Let's face it z. Our best ally in the war in Iraq were cucumbers. No, that isn't a typo. The al-Qaeda freaks wouldn't let merchants in the market stack cucumbers next to tomatoes and the populace said get these fanatics out of here. So we paid of some Sunni militias and they started cleaning out al-Qaeda.

Our military does deserve credit for spotting the opportunity and realizing Iraq doesn't much care for intolerant fundamentalists.

If you were capable of intellectual honesty (a good sign would be you insisting to be known as an imbecile) you would recognize the historical fact that the cultivation of opiate crops is something introduced eastward by Arab Muslim traders nearly 1400 years ago. Afghanistan's poppy farming isn't novel or any more unique than that of the rest of central, south, and southeast Asia. No sir, we did not "turn Afghanistan into one big heroin lab." It's been one for centuries.
