Democrats backing away from Obama Care!?

Senate Democrats try to dodge responsibility for ObamaCare.

·

By JAMES TARANTO

"Powerful Democrats" subjected a top Obama administration health-care official "to withering criticism" last week, notes Walter Russell Mead. When Gary Cohen, head of the Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight, appeared before the Senate Finance Committee, chairman Max Baucus of Montana and Sens. Ron Wyden (Ore.), Bill Nelson (Fla.) and Maria Cantwell (Wash.) "tore into him."
The hearing didn't attract much journalistic attention; the only stories we could find about it were from a legislative trade publication (the Hill) and a health-policy one (Kaiser Health News) (Z:  SURPRISE!). Here's a summary of the senators' complaints:
"Baucus questioned how well the online health insurance marketplaces would interact with what he called 'archaic' computer systems at Social Security and the Internal Revenue Service," Kaiser reports.
Cantwell, the Hill reports, "criticized the administration for delaying implementation of the Basic Health Program--an option for states to provide cost-efficient health coverage outside of Medicaid and the law's new insurance exchanges." It was supposed to start next year but the administration is delaying it until 2015. Cantwell asked Cohen: "Are you artificially raising the cost to all taxpayers by trying to lure them onto the exchange?" (Cohen said no, the Basic Health Plan, in the Hill's paraphrase, "simply had to take a backseat to other priorities.")

"Wyden pressed Cohen to help find ways to resolve a glitch in the law which may result in the denial of federal assistance to millions of Americans of modest means who could be priced out of family health coverage at work," according to Kaiser. At issue is an IRS ruling limiting federal subsidies for such plans. Said Wyden: "We've got millions of people--working-class, middle-class people--who are going to be pushed into a regulatory health coverage no man's land." So much for President Obama's promise that if you like your plan, you can keep it.(Z: by the way...Anybody with bat brains knew this was a lie;  if I have Blue Cross and Blue Cross goes out of business because companies find it cheaper to go for Obama Care, will I be able to keep Blue Cross!?  Of course not..and who didn't know this?)
And Nelson "hammered" the Department of Health and Human Services "for inviting Congress to cut funding for a new nonprofit insurance model," as the Hill puts it:
Funding for healthcare co-ops was eliminated in the year-end tax deal, and Nelson said officials offered up the program as a place Congress could cut.
"Why was that negotiated away at the 11th hour?" Nelson asked.
Cohen didn't have an answer.
Nelson noted that the co-ops funding was axed while applications for new co-ops were still in the pipeline. HHS had already approved a few new [sic] of them.
"I want somebody to be accountable for this, and if it was a mistake, for somebody to own up to it," Nelson said.

If we're going to hold people accountable, how about starting with Bill Nelson, who was among the 89 senators voting "yes" on the tax deal? Maybe that's not entirely fair, since Nelson might have been unaware of that provision, and the expiration, less than two hours earlier, of the Bush tax cuts put genuine pressure on lawmakers to act quickly. Still, it's odd for a member of Congress to be faulting the administration for a position it took in negotiating with Congress, rather than faulting himself and his colleagues for enacting a law whose provisions he doesn't like.
The other three senators have no excuse whatever. If the law is impracticable to implement, or if it gives too much discretion to executive-branch agencies like the IRS or the HHS, these problems could have been anticipated if lawmakers had not been so anxious to ram the bill through. Any single Democrat who was a member of the Senate in December 2009--including Baucus, Cantwell, Nelson and Wyden--could have single-handedly halted the process simply by joining the 40 Republicans in declining to approve a vote on the floor. Instead, every last one of them yielded to political pressure and voted "yes."
"Democrats are getting nervous and consequently are trying to put some distance between themselves and the ACA," Mead observes, using the abbreviated formal styling of ObamaCare as the Affordable Care Act. "We don't blame them for trying, but it may be a futile effort. For better or worse, their fates are now tied to that of Obamacare." (Z; and so are ours)
Indeed there isn't much point in blaming them for trying. But they deserve the blame for imposing this monstrosity on the country. To quote Bill Nelson: "I want somebody to be accountable for this, and if it was a mistake, for somebody to own up to it." (Z: so do WE, Mr. Democrat who voted for this nightmare...SO DO WE)
Z's QUESTION: Will it EVER be possible NOT to have OBAMA CARE?   Can ANYTHING be done if even DEMOCRATS are finally getting the smell of the whole thing?

It will be painful.
State governemnets would have to stay out to the "Exchanges" as a lot of them are. This will put more load on the Fed side, which as the article you quote, can't handle. Collapse.
Then there's the 2014 elections and congressional budgetary withholding if we get enough control.
Without the god-king running, we might be able to make gains:
If it is demonstrated that we are on the wrong path to people who are ignorant of anything but what TMZ, or ET or Snookie tells them.

I doubt it. The SCOTUS ruled that Obamacare is a tax, and clearly the government has Constitutional power to tax.

And the government has never found a tax that it didn't like.

Can ANYTHING be done if even DEMOCRATS are finally getting the smell of the whole thing?

Amendments are possible. After all, changes in the tax code happen all the time. But the financial reality is that health care consumes way too much of our citizens' and our nation's resources.

The tsunami of aging and ailing Boomers is flooding our nation.

Obamacare was supposed to keep down the cost of health insurance premiums. Well, that's not happening, is it? My premium just went up 30% -- for catastrophic coverage with no pharmacy coverage whatsoever. The price of medications is also rising.

Employer-based health insurance -- except for government employees -- is going to vanish within a few years. Remember that I said this.

Private policies don't provide nearly as much coverage as employer-based group policies. This is a reality that I know from personal experience since 2008.

I don't know what goes on inside the head of these liberals. I really don't. Here we were in the middle of the worst economic recession since the Great Depression, and Barack Obama proposes a MASSIVE new entitlement program. And Gigantic government spending.
And this moron is out spending millions and playing Gold with a Domestic Wife beater in one of the worlds most expensive Golf Courses.

Did they think this was going to cost NOTHING? The government was going to pay for those mythical "45 million uninsured Americans" without spending any money...somehow?

I still laugh every time I think about how willingly they chugged Obama's piss that ObamaCare would add "not one dime" to the debt. Not one dime.

Okay. Let's pretend that is true. Let's suppress the mad giggling such a stupid stipulation engenders and pretend ObamaCare is paid for and does not require any additional borrowing from China to pay for it.

Did the liberals ever stop to think how this miracle was to be achieved?
Aside from the logic in this blog,
OF COURSE IT MEANS MORE TAXES, YOU IGNORANT JERKS!!!!

Revenues would have to be raised. A metric shit ton of them on everyone. Fees, taxes, penalties out the wazoo.

And right off, the government started waiving or delaying those fees, taxes, and penalties for their friends.

And what does that mean, boys and girls?

IT MEANS MORE THAN ONE FREAKEN DIME WAS ADDED TO THE DEBT FROM DAY ONE!!!

And now they want to get rid of the insurance taxes which pay for ObamaCare.

Welcome back to reality, you dumb idiot leftie loons .
Anyone with half a brain knows who is going to be paying the cost.

Anyone who thinks the ACA is going to be affordable is a freaken idiot. Wait till these lefty idiots start paying up the ass for their HC to cover all those without. Jesus. Talk about useless freaken drones.

Wait till they get a load of all those unintended consequences that the Dems have foisted on us once again. Idiots.

Obama is a globalist Marxist asss.
Obamaturd is the one that lied and stupid people like Ducky and Libman believed the piece of crap.
Our Country is being run by a complete narcissistic Douchebag. And this fraud never taken responsibility for any of his actions

The jury is out as to whether Obamacare will flourish as the law of the land, or wither on the vine.

As Ed Bonderenka astutely points out, the news of an impending disaster that is Obamacare has got to reach the low information voters with some credibility, the low info folk who only get their world view from Snookie.

I suggest co-opting Snookie; pay her so much that she can't say no, and then televise her chugging down bottles of 100 proof liquor labled 'Obamacare,' puking her guts out and while she is hugging the commode, cursing the evil substance called Obamacare for all she's worth.

I think that will work.

At the risk of being accused of redundancy and given my lack of understanding as to how this monstrosity is [supposed] to work, I re-submit my previous comment on AOW:

Once this boondoggle finally explodes how will the DemocRATS, who have sole responsibility, explain to their 'low information' constituents that it's all the fault of Republicans, who unanimously resisted it?

Well, "low information constituents"; perhaps I answered my own question!

The reality... looks like trouble in paradise, duckman... from the BBC

Increased demand

Meanwhile, a BBC survey of 1,005 people suggested 60% believed services would have to be cut.

The poll, carried out by ComRes, asked members of the public in England a series of questions about the NHS.

Some 61% agreed that they expected the NHS would have to stop providing some treatments and services in the future due to rising costs and increasing demands.

Nearly three-quarters also said they did not trust the government with the health service.

Interesting isn't it, that all we heard during the campaign was that women have the right to choose, when it comes to their bodies.

However, that won't be true for anyone. If you smoke, are too fat, or don't want to submit to chosen preventive tests, and on and on.

Obamacare is about the government controlling our bodies and doctors will have to answer to the govt. It's about power.

For instance, as my doctor told me, in Britain you can't have a heart bypass if you're over 70 years old. In other words you would be left to die, even though a heart bypass can save your life.

Let's face it, we all will become a cost-effective statistic.

Ya, and if they'd only done this in increments...seeing how things worked; making sure we could afford it, figuring out how to cover people without our country going broke under the weight.

Anyway, here is what will happen with oblammycare if nothing changes:

- companies will opt to pay the fine and kick their employees into the gubmint plan. This was the main goal all along. They want to re-routed all that money thru DC.
- good doctors will quit, retire, certainly not accept a 50% cut in medicare. Some docs majority of business is with medicare patients. Would you take a 50% cut?
-poor quality people will be mass injected into the HC system because of this and because oblammycare requires an affirmative action quota type system of populating the system.
You'll be seeing docta Lucretia or Jose before long and neither will be a genius.
-obama aid, people might have to get by on pain pills. Take that as gospel. You get cancer, you're a liability not an asset. You'll be give pain pills and maybe put on a waiting list until you die or go terminal like they do in Canadia. Personally, I think democrat America will be much more rude about it than canadia ever was and they'll just tell you "No HC for you". This is what is referred to as "Death Squads".
-Taxes up the wazoo to pay for a rapidly declining quality of HC.
-No quality care. New Knee" Pfffffft! Forget that!
- fat taxes, smokers taxes, taxes for anything that "they" deem as unhealthy behavior. (England refused to work on a man's broken leg because he is a smoker) Even Canadia's government people came to the US for health care. I've seen stories in the news.
-This will further divide people- People with any physical attribute deemed 'unhealthy' will be viewed by the beautiful people as costing them money.
-life in the US will be a **&*hole.
-you won't have anywhere to go to get healthcare. Cuba maybe. That forbidden utopia on Earth.
-congratulations libtards, you're this far away form your goal of turning life on Earth into hell on Earth.

Oh - and rest assured those politicians you so adore Will have the very best healthcare. oblammycare does not apply to them.
- Finally, I'm sure I left out a whole lot of evil yet to be discovered.

After you're paying taxes up the wazoo for being denied healthcare, like canadia, they'll finally succumb to the masses not getting any healthcare and allow private insurance companies to re-enter the market, and you'll have the privilege of paying for HC insurance like you are today, and still pay all the other taxes that were supposed to provide HC.

Or you can stay on the government program, wait 12+ hours anytime you need to see someone, and when you finally do, they'll be incompetent. And you won't be able to sue them because the government won't allow themselves to be sued.

this is what insane people like beamish thrust upon us because he didn't want to vote for romney should would allow gay marriage, even though obama will surely implement that and hundreds of other leftard things. Lol.

Ah that was a good one. Search results from Google using your own query.

Don't you feel embarrassed for your small intellect and your inability to think by yourself?

I guess you're from the Y-generation. Entitled, clueless, without any critical thinking.

Pathetic.

Froggy, is that link in response to he ridiculous contention that a Texas hospital was paying about 12% of its GROSS revenue to settle malpractice claims(just take the hundreds of millions as a percentage of the highest grossing Texas hospital, ball park it's still ridiculous)?

Your link doesn't address the question at all. Maybe kid knows what hospital it was.

Anyway, you're making a fool of yourself.

From Wiki Froggy (Medical Malpractice) --- The study notes that about 1.14 million patient-safety incidents occurred among the 37 million hospitalizations in the Medicare population over the years 2000-2002. Hospital costs associated with such medical errors were estimated at $324 million in October 2008 alone
-----------------
So kid is claiming that a single Texas hospital was approaching the costs of all Medicare incidents.

This seems a little suspect to me. Maybe you can help make sense of this.

Duckling: "Estimates put the cost at about 4% of the total health bill."

OK, I'd like to know how much in $ are wasted in unnecessary tests, etc, just because of Doctor's CYA fear?

Ducky, again, you're an idiot. I can provide you a link to a google search. So it is not a direct response.

I could provide you proof of my own research by linking to the following, and I'd be a fool myself

Example: Obamacare a distaster for the economy

Really, just you and Liberalman need to grow up and start thinking for yourself. You guys are great at reading but terrible at really asking the right questions and looking at the big picture.

There are direct costs and indirect costs.
Plus if Obamacare works like the French "securite sociale" works, there won't be any savings. Because the indirect cost on the economy is so terrible that it ends up leading to less tax revenue, hence the inability to finance the system. Only time will tell.

In the meantime, you guys need to grow some brain cells.

What link? Did I post a link before the idiotic Google search example?

Shows how much you don't read well.

Wow, it's tough to coach you, Ducky. Not the sharpest tool in the shed.

No I can't. If you guys want to be nit picky about details, go for it. I am seeing the bigger picture of the system.

And I'd rather have higher costs if medical quality is higher than lower costs and shit medicine.

My mom had shit medicine in France and better doctors in the US when she uses them here. She can't go to a private clinic of her choice despite two complementary private insurance on top of the government one.

So I really don't care about those tiny details you want to focus on.

Really GROW the hell up, Ducky. You're in your fifties or sixties and you still think like a teenager.

Oh, and when she comes, since she has no insurance, she pays cash and negotiates rates. She went to a night clinic for some infection and ran some test for only 90 dollars. Whereas I go see my doctor with my high insurance deductible, and I pay 100 dollars.

It shows one thing: you want to decrease costs: stop insuring booboos and let people pay cash.

But no Obamacare forces to insure all the booboos, and the pill.

And when you think about it, it's pure logic and common sense.

But that must escape you. Because common sense isn't sexy enough. You can't glorify your ego and mask your ineptitude with common sense.

"Not like there is any shortage of you and the federal education system and communist indoctrination centers you refer to as 'universities' churn more of you out every day."

My Friend: sadly, this is the only thing that passes for [Education] that they have ever had. Just wait until they go through the "College Of Hard Knocks"; it will happen! I hope I'm gone when it does.

What question? You pointed to me something I didn't mention aka some Texas hospital story. I think I answered the question about cost many times by providing personal example and point of view.

Plus how many times didn't you understand my questions? You got your butt kicked a hundred times therefore.

"C'est l'hopital qui se moque de la charite" with you .

Jonberg, Yea, exactly right. I thought about that later.

1st the multi-billion suit against the drug maker and now tens of thousands without a medicine to take, then you've got
-all drug companies now have to start and fund a reserve and call it "for lottery ticket lawsuits". Who pays for that?

You've got 6 figure malpractice insurance for doctors, and much higher for hospitals because of blood sucking lawyers. Who pays for that?

Then you've got doctors taking extra measures, sometimes overkill surgeries and such because of fear of being sued. PBS ran a special on that and many doctors testified. So, that's extra cost.

Finally, I think of it this way, Airline have a maximum liability if they run you into the ground at 500 mpg, because the airline industry is crucial to the country so lawyers aren't allowed to sue them out of existence. I'd think HC is just as essential as air travel eh?

Maximum payout on medical mal-practice? Do a better job of eliminating bad doctors rather then just let them move to another state?

Take the choking regulations off of insurers.

IBM offed obama free hardware and software to eliminate the 50% of fraud that the gov says is in medicare. obama said buzz off.

Lots of sensical answers here.

HC would be tremendously less.

and 4% ? Can't believe everything you read now can you. Ask the gov what the inflation rate is.

Duck, I'm getting links for anything for you. I kind of like it that you're in the dark actually. I certainly don't care what you believe.

One last one duck. I didn't say hundreds of millions. I said a hundred million, went to 2 million, a 98% reduction. That sounds pretty darn specific to me dig? Yea, I know, you have to spin to get back to your fantasy world. Sucks to be you I guess.

IMP, Depressed people. You make a point.

We've taken evolution out of the mix as much as we can in America eh?

Some high school kid with 3 girls in the car in San Antonio wrecked, killing him and 2 of the girls.

They sent an army of 'grief counselors' to the high school to hold all the young men and women's hands.

We're creating a generation(s) of whimpy, untalented, expect to get something for nothing and have your boss acct like you mommy when they graduate and get a job. IF.

Generally speaking as always.

I never heard the term grief counselor until I was around 40.

Things happened, we dealt with it. It wasn't hard. It actually did us good to have to deal with those things that we needed to.
