WISE WORDS FOR ANY ELECTION TIME

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative and independence.

You cannot help men permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong."

Well said, but look at any socialist policy and that's exactly what ends up happening with them. They promise equality and screw over the middle class and the rich. Technically they are correct, the gap between rich and poor is narrowed when more are made poor.

This is a horrible, confusing, trying election year for us all. I've nearly lost some good friends over politics to the point of where I feel I should abstain myself from it entirely.

But my conservative heart won't allow me to stop talking about it.

Once I finish the draft of my book, I want to get back into blogging en force and will probably start up my own blog again.

Your comment actually was inspiring; many thanks, Z. Seeing I have people like you (and of all people, Tom Clancy) around, I'll keep on writing.

Wonderful post. We should all send a copy of this to Congress!

Wise words indeed. The commenters have echoed my sentiments, and like Karen, I especially like the last one.

Great litany of good common sense.

Only a fool would argue against it.

I would only add the well-known adage: "No nation has ever been known to tax itself into prosperity."

great words and wisdom. and amazingly enough, even if everyone with any logic sent these words to everyone in congress, they would simply ignore the words. it gives the idiots in congress so much more power (so they think, like the good little socialists they are) to make the strong weak, make the rich poor, and so on and so forth...

Very wise words. I've read them before, attributed to Abraham Lincoln. I had them as the tagline on my blog for a while based on that notion.

I would guess that they are misattributed to Lincoln based on the Wikipedia article you linked to.

Nevertheless, the "cannots" listed here (there are actually ten and you only cite seven) are all very true. Thanks for setting me straight on the source of these profound statements.
