Goodbye, Paul Newman....

I didn't agree with your politics, but I sure loved you as an actor. I guess all we had was "a failure to communicate." Rest in peace, handsome. I'll miss you.

Charlie Burns: Quiet.

Fast Eddie: Yeah, like a church. Church of the Good Hustle.

Charlie Burns: Looks more like a morgue to me. Those tables are the slabs they lay the stiffs on.

Fast Eddie: I'll be alive when I get out, Charlie.

----------------
If he'd given us nothing more the The Hustler, Hud and Cool Hand Luke it would have been more than you get from 95% of the actors out there.

He was something when he was doing that heavy "method" stuff.

And he made Nixon's enemies list to boot.
Stand up guy all the way.
---------------------------

Boss: Sorry, Luke. I'm just doing my job. You gotta appreciate that.

Luke: Nah - calling it your job don't make it right, Boss.

-----------------------

Homer Bannon: That's your solution for getting out of a tight? To pass bad beef on to my neighbors who wouldn't know what they was getting? Or maybe risk starting an epidemic in the entire country?

Hud Bannon: This country is run on epidemics, where you been? Price fixing, crooked TV shows, inflated expense accounts. How many honest men you know? Why you separate the saints from the sinners, you're lucky to wind up with Abraham Lincoln. Now I want out of this spread what I put into it, and I say let us dip our bread into some of that gravy while it is still hot.

Homer Bannon: You're an unprincipled young man Hud.

Hud Bannon: Don't let that worry you none. You got enough for both of us.

Rest easy, Fast Eddie. Rest easy.

Well he put his money where he mouth was when it came to charity work, so I give him full credit for that.

He was a true gentleman. Rest in peace.

What a surprise! And here I expected we'd hear of Kennedy's passing.

Well, Newman had nice blue eyes, didn't he? Funny! I never knew he was one of our enemies till later years.

Old man Nixon knew a thing or two. He did, indeed, know who the enemies were.

Why do you think Nixon was crucified, and still suffers ritual vilification?

FT....you're so right.
On that subject, I noticed that my liberal trolls didn't comment on my piece exposing the truth about the Rosenbergs, did you notice that? Same thing used to happen at FPM, remember? Irrefutable proof they're WRONG and NO LEFTIES posting.!! Of course Nixon was right....Newman was probably not a Communist, but he certainly was no friend to his party. He had every right to dislike the guy.

I tried to put aside the causes Newman stood for (at least the anti-nuclear stuff)when I purchased his popcorn from time to time! He did very good things through the Scott Newman Foundation, that's for SURE. And I also think he gave oldsters in America a lot of encouragement with his race car driving, acting, into his eighties. Great stuff.

And, he had a seemingly admirable, long lasting marriage...I like good examples for young people. I hope they didn't let their beloved NO NUKES AT ANY COST BECAUSE WE REALLY DON'T THINK IT'S NICE EVEN THO WE HAVEN'T REALLY CHECKED PROPERLY INTO IT stance stand in front of the good examples he set.

And Mustang's right...he did seem to be a real gentleman.

Takes one to know one!

“We are such spendthrifts with our lives,” Mr. Newman once told a reporter. “The trick of living is to slip on and off the planet with the least fuss you can muster. I’m not running for sainthood. I just happen to think that in life we need to be a little like the farmer, who puts back into the soil what he takes out.”

Well, I don't and didn't care about his politics. He wasn't prone to being hateful.

Paul Newman melted too many female hearts and gave too many terrific performances, to be anything but a one of a kind, talented, hunk! He had it all.

Always, on the screen, with that hint of danger if a woman got too close, but, irresistible sexuality.

Another screen giant gone. That's life but, a sad thing nonetheless. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Elbro...what a fantastic sentiment. I hadn't heard that, thanks so much.

Pris....He was one VERY HANDSOME MAN, huh? I once dated a man who looked very much like Newman..this man (well, we were 18, I think!)'s name was Flan McGuire...I still remember! And then, there was Scott Springer, who ALSO looked very much like Newman (even more than Flan, come to think of it) and he was SO cute that I dropped a whole ice cream soda on the floor at an ice cream parlor because I was so flustered when he approached! (what was the place called where they had a 'trough' of ice cream?? "I made a pig of myself at......." ?? you know!)

....and he was the bus boy and had to clean up that mess.
I could have died of embarrassment.

Didn't much impress HIM, either, TRUST me!!!

I had many conversations with
Paul Newman over a 25 year period.
He was always a gentleman, kind,
funny and thoughtful. He was a champion to his wife and family.

Yes, his eyes did "glow" with a blue so intense that it could
sometimes be a distraction.

His movies are classics. He did his
craft well, and we benefit from
his efforts. He was defined by his
life on film and tried to keep his
private life, private. Regardless
of his politics, he was one very
fine human being.
Will miss you ,Paul.
Your longtime fan,

I finally read the obituary. I did not know PN was battling cancer. I am deeply sorry for all cancer sufferers. Cancer is the one thing I know that's worse than communism.

Nevertheless, PN was still a rotter at heart. I don't care how much money he gave away, how mild-mannered and gentlemanly he may have appeared, or how many women he turned on. He was all right as an actor, but he had a tinny voice, and I never particularly liked his style.

The movies he made about grubby low-life characters and the worlds they inhabit are the kind of thing that LEFTISTS always adore --- the scummier the better. All those Elia Kazanish things were fully intended as a smack in the face of America --- a deliberate attempt to tarnish us in our own eyes, and turn as us dour, cynical and sullenly self-righteous as liberals almost always are.

I can't be glad when anyone dies, but neither will I pretend I thought highly of someone just because he passed on.

This certainly was a surprise. Did anyone know he was fighting cancer?

Yes, FT...just a month ago, the news was really bad; "any day".

The only film I didn't much like him in was Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, but I think it was because he was with Taylor (who I thought wasn't up to snuff in that film) and because I hated his character's character!

Must be so hard on Joanne Woodward to finally lose him.......

He did play 'pouty' men a lot, didn't he!! I don't care, I LOVED his looks.

Z,

Did you know that Barbara Bel Geddes (Miss Ellie of Dynasty fame!) created the role of Maggie the Cat in the original B'way production?

It's hard to believe.

But then Jessica Tandy (Driving Miss Daisy and Fried Green Tomatoes) was the original Blanche Dubois in Streetcar.

WOW! Ain't life incredible?

I'm sorry you feel so bad about PN. As the old song says, "Love ain't rational." ;-)

Not too shabby Italian salad dressing.

For now and in future, let us judge in the context of his trade ...He was a great actor and that's what we will miss!

ANON "FT?" that is REALLY interesting..but I COULD see Bel Geddes as Maggie the cat..I really could.
Jessica Tandy as Blanche, not so much; but she was good in everything, so....

Beamish, VERY decent Italian salad dressing; I like it, too.

AI.....you're right/ today is not for politics and I was a bit ashamed even mentioning it.

He was a good man. He'll be missed, but he'll never be forgotten; All of us should wish for that legacy.

My Italian dressing is GOOD, but...! (smile!)
