Tonight, listening to the press conference about the horrendous shooting at Ft Hood, two things cross my mind:
The first is about how the Major who did the shooting's name is Hasan and how that could be a Muslim name. I thought "Well, let people see that something like this can happen here in America, maybe Americans will wake up." Then, sadly, I thought "No, they'll go into overdrive pitying this man as he's "probably reacting to our imperialism in Iraq or Afghanistan." Your thoughts?
The second thing that crossed my mind bothers me the very most. A question I have is whether or not all military personnel wear dog tags at all times or just in the combat arena? If they do wear them always, as I suspect, why is the soldier briefing on the attacks now on TV only using MAJOR HASAN as identification? Would they not know the first name? I'm curious....can somebody help me out with that? Is it Mohammed and they don't want that out there? Maybe not...pardon me for seemingly blaming a Muslim for these attacks, I COULD BE SOOO WRONG, but if I'm right........what's up?
Would they REALLY not know the first name of a MAJOR AT FT HOOD who's KILLED 12 people and injured 31?
LARRY KING JUST SAID TO A GUEST TALKING ABOUT THIS SITUATION "BY USING HIS ISLAMIC NAME, AREN'T YOU SPECULATING ON YOUR OWN?" I guess the leftwingers would prefer we not give a name if it's remotely Islamic? That's odd; when a man who attends a church kills someone, the first thing we hear is his first name and how, ten years ago, he was the Sunday School Superintendent. hmmm
Any thoughts? thanks..z

I was required to only wear dog tags in basic training and in a combat zone.
as for the other, military members are usually addressed in this formal manner. Even my friends in the military usually referred to me with my last name.
The MSM is already doing PC gymanstics to avoid saying what we all know. This attack WAS related to his religous beliefs...and it IS terrorism.
Z,
I had to wear my dogtags at all times even in the shower. I'm with EB in the address of the last name and rank. Having said that, I don't think we know everything about this shooting. I hate to sound like a conspiracy guy, but this is too suspicious. My question is, will we hear the full story anytime soon?
Larry is right on target! This is terrorism. But since George Bush kept us safe for eight years, the left needs for this to be anything other than a terrorist attack on American soil. And they will do all that they can do to color it as anything else.
But, since Major Malik Nidal Hasan is in fact alive, that may be very difficult to do in the coming days. Something tells me that Hasan will not be going along with the program!
First time I saw the story I wondered if it would turn out to be a Muslim, that's how depraved and suspicious a person I've become. Merely WONDERED however. Then I saw the name Hasan and, well, OK, CAIR says take it easy, let's have some "common sense" here. But THEN I saw the report that they've found some evidence that he was showing interest in suicide bombing on the internet. He was also due to be deplyed to Iran or Iraq. Hm. Am I allowed to open my mouth yet?
OOps, sorry, you asked his name. It was Nidal Malik Hasan. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_fort_hood_shooting
Yep. Dog tags are not necessarily "required" outside of initial training. It depends on how hard ass your unit is. Mine was pansy ass.
Oh, and Nidal Malik Hasan IS his name. He's still bloody alive. I've got a good round up over my way going.
More about Hasan.
I suspected from the start that the "Religion of Peace" was somehow involved in this. To some on the left (not all) only Christians and Jews can be bad so Muslims get a pass.
Ft. Dix didn't give us enough warning? We deserve this. We asked for it by not kicking every muslim ass out of the military long ago. The fragging in Iraq...the traitor muslim chaplain...Cair's now blaming our "treatment" of muslims saying they react to the "harassment". So we soft shoe them some more...then they bitch about something else and decide to kill...or plot to kill more Americans? Enough....all muslims leave. Leave or be squashed like the bugs you are under a huge American foot. It's coming you muslim freaks.
Oops....sorry...not PC I know. I'll confess to my priest why I distrust and refuse to love my muslim....neighbors.
Hi Z...
I heard about this as I was leaving work, and had J.D. Hayworth on the radio driving home.
He had it all out there, no political correctness. He didn't imply terrorism, but didn't avoid it either. He had Hasan's full name and was repeating it over and over, basically driving the point home. He was already (4pm mountain time) calling out NBC and CNN for political correctness.
On Huffington Post, the commenters there are in full blown leftist denial. According to them this is all the fault of American Imperialism. The headlines at least are somewhat honest; their top headline right now tells that he "allegedly" sympathized with suicide bombers.
Sounds like you got the PC slant big-time. CNN?? No wonder they are sinking fast. Larry King? I'm surprised he wasn't still doing Michael Jackson stories.
I personally don't think this was intended to be terrorism. I think this was a chicken$#!% act by a complete coward who couldn't deal with his pending orders. Tough. You signed up, you do what you're told - that's the deal in the military, and anyone who has ever served knows it.
I'll be glad he didn't die - if and only if they can learn something about what really motivated him. We seem to never have the chance to get inside the minds of these whack jobs. I hope this time is different.
I think Z's questions pretty much say it all.
I thank others for posting his name, which I had heard from Michael Medved earlier.
I'm sorry to be the one to say it, but since there is no picture of this creature so far, I can't help but wonder if he is not a BLACK Muslim?
The name Malik indicates that to me. Anyone remember Malik "Zulu" Shabazz?
"By the pricking of my thumbs something evil this way comes."
When Oh when are going to start using some common sense again?
Political correctness KILLS.

PS: I'm so sorry he didn't die. The money we waste on trying individuals whose guilt is not in dispute is shocking.
And let's face it: A dead man cannot rise to kill again.
Breaking news.
My brother in law attended Tech with this guy and may have sat in the same classes with him.
There is also information that a Major Hasan served on President Obama's transitional task force.
How interesting.
Same fellow???
By the way, many are saying now, that this fellow voiced strong anti American feelings, urged Muslims to rise up against the aggressors and so forth.
Also, someone believed to be this major, possibly, was posting all sorts of sentiments about suicide bombers, and so on, at internet sites.
No, My husband never had to wear dog tags except for combat areas , and various alert-training excercises.
However, with fatigues, the last name is usually on the uniform.
At least, that used to be the case. All personel had embroidered name tags sewn over certain front pocket.
Dress uniforms are different, altogether.
This just burns me up.
Back to the major, he is supposed to be of Jordanian descent.
WVDOTTR
thanks, everybody...I got the name by now, too.
The FACT IS, they didn't mention it at a PRESS BRIEFING! That just seemed wild to me. I mean, the PRESS reports (or DID!), so you'd think they'd give them all the information they knew, and they did know the last name, so how could they not know the first? It would be ON a dog tag, right?
What irks me tonight watching TV is everybody bending over backwards to find out WHY DID HE DO IT? To heck with that....who cares? HE DID A TERRIBLE THING (Greta Van Susteran is the only one honest enough to say that she didn't care WHY he did it, he DID it and it stinks)
Why are we so curious about WHY?? for excuses?:
RACHEL MADDOW was skirting on how the army'd never really cared to find out about psych cases, with the inference that this could have been avoided and what does the army care?...I guess she didn't realize the guy's apparently a SHRINK!?
Anderson Cooper's all over this with the guy's cousin assuring the country that Hassan was born here, never had a problem before, was not a convert to Islam but was born to a Muslim family and wasn't a fanatic, telling us what a peaceful, wonderful guy this man is...
Larry King's got Dr. Phil assuring America that it's absolutely nasty to be jumping to conclusions about the islam angle because, after all, it's probably a coincidence that he's a muslim and, let's face it, he's probably just a guy who snapped with the pressure of military stuff...muslim or not.
AND King had a former JAG lawyer saying "What? You can rule out islamic terror but you're nuts if you do this early in the game..." (bravo....!) Larry King got rid of this guy and kept Dr Phil on longer, of course.
The point is he DID it and he needs punishment not psychoanalysis.
WVDOTTR: Thanks for the input about dog tags..Yes, you're right; I'd imagine the name's right on his pocket, right? Or over it? The FULL NAME?
And, they're suggesting tonight that Hasan was real ticked at Obama these days, madder and madder, because he was staying in Iraq and Afghanistan and had promised to get the troops out.
Maybe this guy was just a good ol' American of Jordanian descent who went to VA Tech and snapped because he didn't want to go to the theater of this war but maybe he didn't want the war in those countries because it was attacking his Muslim brethren? His allegiance is in question then...or maybe not.
We'll know more soon. IF the media lets us. Don't hold your breaths.
Here's a bit from my buddy Rich Galen's colum: "Hasan who, according to the NY Times, is 39-years old "started having second thoughts about his military career a few years ago after other soldiers harassed him for being a Muslim."
Hello? You mean to tell me that after 9/11 a guy named Nidal Hasan wasn't harassed for being a Muslim but sometime over the past "few years" his fellow officers turned on him because of his name?
If he is 39 years old and joined out of high school, he has been in the military for about 20 years. If he was going to be harassed for being a Muslim, it is more likely to have happened in his enlisted days than when he was an Army physician."
"BY USING HIS ISLAMIC NAME, AREN'T YOU SPECULATING ON YOUR OWN?"
Wow...just when I thought the PC crowd had taken political correctness to the utmost extreme.
His name is his name!
Z, the first thing I said to Mr. Pris when this terrible slaughter was reported was, "I want to know his name". When they finally announced it I said" that's what I thought".
That kind of thinking isn't a stretch since 9-11. To me it makes sense. Remember the Fort Dix Six? Yep, it makes sense.
I suppose we're going to hear because harassment is claimed, that the "poor man was just at his wit's end". Well I say, "Physician heal thyself".
Political correctness will kill us yet. It's some kind of mass neurosis IMO, but then I'm not a psychiatrist.
I'm not glad he's alive. He murdered 12 people. We've heard for years how we can learn what makes certain people tick when they commit horrendous crimes.
As far as I can tell, what that has led to is some ridiculous efforts to "understand" malicious or deadly behavior. I only understand one thing. Twelve human beings are dead because a muslim went on a murderous rampage.
That's nothing new, it's called an act of hatred. His reasons for it don't matter anymore. Justice is what matters, and IMO, in this case, he should die for what he did. I'm only sorry he didn't.
Pris
Pris, absolutely...he killed, he shouldn't be alive.
It would cost us MILLIONS now to take defend him, if a ton of Harvard types (like the types who're defending Gitmo detainees with such anti-American zealotry) wouldn't volunteer...then he'll sue US and the Left, led by Eric Holder, will say we deserve it because he shouldn't have been expected to go to 'unrighteous wars' and then he'll be free and write a book and make more money and then CAIR will file a lawsuit saying that Americans rushed to judgment because of his religion and we have no basis for that.
ANybody want to add anything to that?
The left always finds excuses to behavior like this, unless the victim is on the left, a minority, an homosexual, etc...
This won't never change because it's a psychological pattern that is pathological from them.
Now, one has the right to say this could be related to some kind of imperialism. Saying this is a receivable and debatable opinion that yet doesn't excuse the guy.
Terrorism was strong when France was in Algeria. In Algeria and in Paris. We could not deny the fact that the French presence was the reason of those acts. And at that time, this was not a muslim vs West issue.
The US is not a colonial power. But it is natural (didn't say justifiable) that its presence is so many countries creates resentment and from this resentment violence will and already happens. The cause-effect relationship is just a fact--not an excuse.
I am honestly starting to doubt all those foreign policy efforts. Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and now here. Really not sure this will pay off long term.
A religion is hard to defeat. Rome had to eventually collaborate with Christianity. I certainly don't want to ally with a religion that deprives people from freedom and mistreat women.
But we're stretching ourselves and are weakening internally. Financial and moral crises that ruined Rome may also ruin us and make the so-called "barbarians" win at the end.
I'd imagine the name's right on his pocket, right? Or over it? The FULL NAME?
Nope. Just his last name and while he may not have had his dog tags on he certainly had his military ID.
I heard his full name less than 3 hours after the shooting on Michael Medved's show. As for the base giving his full name during the press conference I don't suspect any endeavor to keep it quiet. They did give it and up to that point had merely used the protocol that is used in most of the military, title and last name.
Here in Northern Virginia, we're getting a lot of info on this jihadomaniac. After all, he was born in Arlington, Virginia, and attended school in Virginia and worked at a nearby veterans hospital.
There is also information that a Major Hasan served on President Obama's transitional task force.
Hasan is a common name.
Is it the same fellow or not???
Being PC is going to be the death of America! Everyone tiptoes on eggshells because we have a president who is Muslim, if not in name, in his heart.
My heart is just sad at this situation. It is hard for the families to send their loved ones to a foreign country to kill the 'true infidels' and then get killed on their own homeland.
I can echo the experiences of the other vets here about the dogtags. They wanted us to wear them all thetime but off-duty in civvies it wasn't enforced. I always wore mine, or at least had them with me, when I was in uniform. After awhile I ran them through my key ring to keep chest hairs from getting yanked out by the chain. In the field I ran the chain through a length of 550 cord.
Military spokes-creatures generally just refer to people by a rank & last name. As far as Uncle Sugar is concerned, his first name is MAJOR and his last name is HASAN. For the most part I didn't have a first name the whole time I was in; they just all called me by either my full last name, or just "Ski". The Army buds I still keep up with still call me Ski out of habit.
Larry King? Come on, z, listening to that idiot makes you slow.
I watched NBC and PBS last night and both were very clear about the specifics of the attacker. I listened to drive time rabies radio and they were, of course, portraying this guy as the seventh Imam.
Surely you know how difficult it is to get a factual report immediately after something like this.
The Washington Post has a substantial profile of the man today. It seems apparent that this guy was just waiting to go off and there were plenty of signs. Palestinian immigrant parents, he was born in America, devout and very well educated but he just never seemed to find a way to fit in to the culture.
Elbro, at the first briefing it was only rank and last name. I find that odd. If you're saying it's protocol to only give that, that's at least something.....but
As you know, most NEWS BRIEFINGS will give the press more to the reporters so they can put in full names,.......whatever.
Ducky, it's very important that Conservatives hear what people like Larry King are saying: His numbers have gone way down, but he still has viewers who actually fall for his leftwing bias. I don't recommend that anybody sits and watches his whole show, but am one for getting as much information as one can get before drawing conclusions.
Hasan did mix well, according to his cousin; VA Tech, medical degree, played sports with the other guys; no sign of this kind of problem in the past.
Let's see if the rumors of his yelling "GOD IS GREAT" at the scene before he started shooting are true; I think that will show us a lot.
As predicted, the Exec Director of CAIR is now asking for Americans not to jump to conclusions...
I wish Americans would get the same respect from the media if this guy was Major Graham and had yelled "Jesus is Savior" before he started shooting.
As I said in an earlier comment, by the time this man's last name was used at the first briefing, if he'd been a Christian, they'd have ID'd his full name and remembered to include that he was a well respected Deacon in his Church.
CAIR and the Military are back stepping from his Islamic roots as if those are the LAST thing that could POSSIBLY have caused the rampage murder of no 13 innocent soldiers.
Yahoo news is showing a good bit of detail. Looks like he had posted some jihadi rants about suicide bombers being equivalent to soldiers throwing themselves on a grenade to protect their fellow men...
He claimed his nationality as Palestinian although he was born in Virginia. ??? huh???
It's all on Yahoo.
From Yahoo (thanks, Jen):
"Hasan listed his birthplace as Arlington, Va., but his nationality as Palestinian, Khan said (his Imam in VA).
"I don't know why he listed Palestinian," Khan said, "He was not born in Palestine."
Nothing stood out about Hasan as radical or extremist, Khan said.
"We hardly ever got to discussing politics," Khan said. "Mostly we were discussing religious matters, nothing too controversial, nothing like an extremist."
and I'm POSITIVE Khan's truthful, aren't you? :-(
Now I get it, Z, sorry I missed your point earlier, not reading your questions as rhetorical. My own doubts were raised by the withholding of the shooter's name but I was only half-conscious of that recognition.
And obviously I was wrong in my feeling that this was probably a BLACK Muslim.
It doesn't make any difference WHAT kind of Muslim he is. The fact remains -- despite the obsessive-compulsive denial on the part of liberals and conservative talk show hosts like Michael Medved -- that MUSLIMS should ALL be regarded as SUSPECT and treated as GUILTY TILL PROVEN INNOCENT.
Those members of that benighted group should be GLAD and EXTREMELY COOPERATIVE with such a policy -- if they really ARE decent people who mean the West no harm.
Draconian? Sure! But our LIVES are at stake.
The US Constitution is not a suicide pact.

Elbro, at the first briefing it was only rank and last name. I find that odd. If you're saying it's protocol to only give that, that's at least something.....but

I understand Z, I'm just saying it's still not all that unusual considering it's pretty standard in military circles and the PAO may have been reluctant because he didn't have all the info. After all they originally thought he had died.
It is ironic that many blogging rightwingers are concerned that the media appeared to be PC or conspiratorial about giving out the name of the culprit. In the hours immediately after the the Ft. Hood shooting, only one of the three cable news channels persisted in withholding the name after it became known. That was Fox. Both CNN and MSNBC had been using the full name, Nidal Malik Hasan, for about two hours when Fox first began to broadcast it. On Fox, Shepherd Smith pointedly and repeatedly stated that he would not use the name he had until he obtained confirmation from the Pentagon. But, in the end, when he did begin using it belatedly, he would only say that "officials" confirmed it, not identifying which officials they were.
oh, damn, psi bond. Don't you hate it that Shep Smith at FOX (no conservative, by the way) wanted to make absolutely certain they had the RIGHT NAME before revealing it? I'm rather impressed, personally.
The only question here, if you'd read the post, is why they left his first name off for the first few hours. It's all clear now....
Yes! The name MALIK has highly negative connotations.
The first time that most Americans ever saw or heard the name was the regrettable moment that MALIK "ZULU" SHABAZZ reared his ugly head and spat Ebonic venom in America's face.
It's ALL RIGHT to loathe and despise advocates of disrespectful, violent, disruptive, subversive and destructive behavior. In fact it's downright PATRIOTIC .

Z, It's impressive that you can impute noble nonpartisan motives to Shep for not informing the public and impure motives to the rest of the media for doing so.
I wonder why he never specified what kind of officials confirmed the name for him. In his phone interview of Hasan's cousin, Shep failed to make absolutely certain of his facts when he asked when Hasan converted to Islam. The cousin, clearly incredulous over the question, replied that Hasan had always been a Muslim.
The only question here, if you'd read the post, is why they left his first name off for the first few hours. It's all clear now....
It's clear they relayed the information to the public as they got it piecemeal from eyewitnesses and Ft. Hood personnel. Gen. Cone in his first news conference referred to him only as Major Hasan. I don't think Cone was in on the conspiracy. CNN and MSNBC had broadcast the full name well before that news conference.
Terrorism. You betcha!
We must wake up. This insidious movement seeks to destroy us from the inside out.
Gee, psi bond...I can't STAND Shep, so it's a bit too much energy to respond to anything about him, frankly, but the very idea that the man didn't do his 'homework' and know without a doubt the islamic status of a killer muslim within hours of an attack is ludicrous.
What our army WOULD know is his FIRST NAME, RIGHT away......and, of course, that's my post's main thrust.
What's almost hilarious is watching Larry King tonight and hearing his guest insist "there are no co conspirators..this is NOT TERRORISM"
IS the leftwing THAT stupid? REALLY?
Hasan is American born who lists PALESTINIAN as his heritage and our army let him be a MAJOR? And you're worried about shep smith?
Z: Gee, psi bond...I can't STAND Shep, so it's a bit too much energy to respond to anything about him, frankly, but the very idea that the man didn't do his 'homework' and know without a doubt the islamic status of a killer muslim within hours of an attack is ludicrous.
Golly, Z. First you say you're really impressed with Shep's concern for accuracy, and then you apologize for him, after declaring you can't STAND him (as if I should care), by contending it's ludicrous to expect him to be accurate in the story he broadcasts within hours of an attack. Your inconsistency is impressive. And you misunderstand if you think this is all about Shep.
What our army WOULD know is his FIRST NAME, RIGHT away......and, of course, that's my post's main thrust.
In that case, your main thrust is all wrong. Name tags on Army uniforms give only the LAST NAME; that is what Ft. Hood observers would know right away. Shep was withholding even the last name when the full name could be learned on other news channels.
What's almost hilarious is watching Larry King tonight and hearing his guest insist "there are no co conspirators..this is NOT TERRORISM"
Given your ambiguous relationship with news accuracy, it is doubtful that King's guest said it in those unambiguous terms (I don't care about Larry King). I know rightwingers love to confirm their expectation of international terrorism in all cases where Muslims are involved (remember the DC sniper). However, I doubt that anyone knows enough at this stage to say whether he thought of himself as striking a blow for radical Islam, or as giving albeit twisted expression to his frustration over being unable to get out of the Army, even after he reportedly had hired a lawyer for the purpose. Whether it was an internationally planned attack, such as 9/11, is still an open question.
IS the leftwing THAT stupid? REALLY?
Is the rightwing REALLY that simple-minded on matters of human psychology?
Hasan is American born who lists PALESTINIAN as his heritage and our army let him be a MAJOR? And you're worried about shep smith?
Do you love blatant misrepresentation that much? I have no worry about shep smith. To repeat what I said initially, I think it ironic, amusingly so, that you and other rightwingers here were foaming about the conspiratorial nature of the media withholding the full name when it was only Fox that had done that.
