- $9.38 million to renovate a century-old train depot in Lancaster County, Pa., that has not been used for three decades.

What a beautiful old station.

Reminds me of the restoration done in Mass. at places like South Station and Central Station in Worcester. Absolutely gorgeous old architecture that is part of our heritage.

John Murtha shouldn't have to wait for a runway to open up when he flies home to his district... especially if he's expecting Joe Biden or Hilda Solis to pay him a call.

Ducky...please, you just look so silly. There are examples that we might all cherish in better times.
We have an economy to save, when are you going to get it? We don't need studies of freshmen sex, we don't need freezing fish sperm and we don't need this "beautiful old station" worked on NOW. Get it?

FJ....I'm wondering how many Murtha projects will continue to carry the name MURTHA? I hear it'S EVERYWHERE.

Well z, I'm not sure why you think construction activity and an efficient rail system won't generate economic growth. Surely you can't believe that only consumer spending can do that.
Paul Volcker was warning about our dependence on consumer spending this morning. No radical him.

Besides, I'm an Ozu fan and they all love choo-choos.

Carl Sandburg - Limited

I am riding on a limited express, one of the crack trains of the nation.
Hurtling across the prairie into blue haze and dark air go fifteen all-steel coaches holding a thousand people.
(All the coaches shall be scrap and rust and all the men and women laughing in the diners and sleepers shall pass to ashes.)
I ask a man in the smoker where he is going and he answers: "Omaha."

Yes ducky only the great government god can get our economy going, not grown men and women acting like adults.

Did I say only? Now don't start that fallacious nonsense. I am trying to be civil.

Why won't government spending to renovate the station be an economic plus?

You may not like government spending but that isn't an answer.

Look at the items on the list and you'll find quite a few that fall into this category. Sure there is some waste, John Murtha should be taken out and shot but there is waste in private spending also ... or did you miss the Wall Street implosion?

Should the bridge be allowed to collapse or should the limited number of users be assessed the full payment and given The Full Ayn Rand?

More examples of disgusting porkiferous legislation that must be stopped.

Ducky..."I ask a man in the smoker where he is going and he answers: "Omaha.""

Right now, any American's answer ought to be "Hell", when you consider what the left's doing with our money. By the way, where IS the 85% of unaccountable stim. money? odd.

A 'beautiful old station' isn't a train system, Ducky. I hate the idea of this stimulus package because Roosevelt and Japan tried it and it only prolonged the problems...but, if we had to give in to the leftwingers, at least I thought we MIGHT get some REAL infrastructure built and REAL jobs created...remember the term "Shovel ready" by Obama 10 months ago? I guess we know now what he was shoveling, eh?

Do you remember when Homer Simpson tried to make money by recycling grease? He would buy a hundred dollars worth of bacon so that he could recycle the grease, which brought him about sixty cents.

Why won't recyling grease result in great wealth? Because the cost outweighs the payoff.

Why won't government spending to renovate the station be an economic plus? Because the cost outweighs the payoff.

Ducky,
Wouldn't you prefer that the Mass government, or even the Worcester government paid for restoration of such landmarks? Wouldn't they have better feel for respecting the heritage?

I'd conduct the sex study of freshman girls for free.

Z said...

Elbro, that cracked me UP! I think a LOT of guys might just volunteer for that.

tiob....good point; again getting to the real matter at hand. Let LOCAL government which should appreciate their landmarks pay.

Also, does Ducky remember how much in DEBT we are to CHINA to fix a lovely little train station?

As if that's the REAL matter; sometimes one feels they're getting us in REALLY insurmountable debt on purpose; they can't be THAT stupid to not see the problems ahead with that, CAN THEY? Or SO power hungry that short term "pleasing weak Americans who love redistribution" is THAT important to them for votes TODAY, handing over American safety and sovereignty in the deal? maybe

mr. ducky,

Can you please thank Warren Buffett for buying Burlington Northern today? The less railroads that the US taxpayers have hanging around their necks, the better!

Elbro - just think you could even get grant money besides!

I don't know, I think they ought to just survey the alumni.

All kidding aside Z, this entire post makes ne sick. Business as usual in DC.

Meanwhile, my son is furloughed so many days a month. My grandson got laid off. Both my children suffered big losses on their 401k's, the politicians spend money we don't have, and the administration and democrats are determined to destroy this country.

A pox on all their houses!

I was just thinking of the taxpayers is all.

Elbro, we know that. Of COURSE you are, you civic-minded man you. heh

tiob, Worcester did pay for the renovation.

Now in the case of Lancaster you have a city in a tourist area and there is absolutely no reason not to maintain the station. Northwest rail travel has become popular and the Northeast corridor is profitable.

I do apologize to my conservative brethren for supporting the restoration of historic American architecture. Much better to have a big fat Wal-Mart and the golden arches in some strip mall as a reminder of what the last three decades have brought us.
That is what you will do to the American landscape. Thanks.

I was talking to my niece in Florida and she went on about how things are going okay for her and her husband but she can't wait to move. Nothing but boring junk all built in the last few years and no character at all.
I disagreed. I does have character but a very Pop art sensibility that Warhol and others predicted was on the way. You didn't listen.

Ducky, this is possibly the most egregious of all your comments the last 10 years, since FPM to now here.

The very thought that I wouldn't agree to restoring a beautiful old building in AMerica is so sick and stupid I can't wrap my brain around it.

I will repeat, yet again, the point of this post and perhaps remind you again of what's happening to our country: WE are borrowing from CHINA to pay for bringing jobs back, bailing companies, etc.......some of us feel that projects like Lancaster County just MIGHT have to wait until the crisis is over. We don't WANT China to pay for this...we're tired of being in debt.

I know you think you have some superior sensibility you're amazed and very self-congratulatory about but SAVE IT. We have taste and appreciation, too. We just have good sense and allegiance to this COUNTRY more than a train. Frankly, I'm a bit surprised you DO have any appreciation for ANYTHING AMERICAN.

Well ducky, considering Wal-Mart created over 20,000 jobs last year where everyone else is closing I say yes, better to have a Wal-Mart. Considering how they've gone to great lengths to make groceries and retail at dirt cheap prices, thus granting the poor you care so much about cheap produce at a high quality I say yes, better to have a Wal-Mart. Considering they are one of the nation's largest employers in a depressed economy, I say yes, better to have a Wal-Mart. Considering they give guys like me great jobs with decent pay and full healthcare coverage for my family at a dirt cheap price, performance incentives on every pay check, quarterly incentives every 3 months, a great retirement plan, and profit sharing, I say yes, better to have a Wal-Mart.
