I felt a little funny when I heard that Michelle Obama, surprising tourists, welcomed them to the White House this morning with "I am Michelle Obama. You are in my home, Welcome to my house.” I heard it on the radio and there was no comment made so I figured I heard it wrong. How could she? HER HOME??
Then, there's this:
Ever the style risk-taker, the first lady chose this bold Alexander McQueen look for last night's State Dinner.
Dressed in a red petal print silk organza gown by Alexander McQueen, Michelle Obama stopped high-profile traffic Wednesday night at the White House State Dinner for the Republic of China. The brilliant red color is a symbol of luck in Chinese culture, but there was more to her designer choice than just diplomacy. (Z: EVERY single article I have read about this "Fabulous dress!" mentions the color and how that's Chinese for LUCK....no comment how it's also Chinese for RED CHINA, of course. How wearing a dress the color of luck is appropriate or important is waaay beyond me, but maybe that's just me.)The first lady's unofficial stylist Ikram Goldman, a Chicago boutique owner who commissions many of the looks worn by Mrs. O, is an admitted fan of the avant garde designer who died a year ago. Mrs. O wore McQueen originals twice last year, but this is the first time she's modeled a gown in his name.
The red dress was made for the 2011 resort collection by Sarah Burton, and was altered slightly at the sleeves to show off Obama's famously toned arms. Despite a focus on politics at the White House dinner, the guest list boasted icons of the fashion world like Vera Wang and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. But all eyes were on the first lady, whose impact on the global fashion industry is unrivaled.
Her leverage comes with credentials; over the past two years Obama's selection of designer gowns for political events has been bold, thoughtful, and spot-on.
(Z: wow. I guess they've missed those full skirts with the sweaters, the horrid shorts and big flowery dresses with flat shoes that should make any fashionista CRINGE. By the way, fashion means SO little with the problems we have today, and I'm not particularly interested, but the FAWNING over this woman every time she appears is usually unwarranted and almost scary........She can look gorgeous, no doubt about it, and she can really make terrible fashion mistakes. Try Googling for the mistakes...good luck, they're all too in love...amazing.)

You can take the broad out of Chicago, but you can't take Chicago out of the broad. Her taste has to be all in her mouth, 'cause it sho' ain't on the body. I'll never forget the Black Widow dress! Symbolism, anyone?

CAT FIGHT !
No, Duck, I'm a Scorpio. I don't get mad, I don't get even, I GET AHEAD!

While your post had serious undertones to it, I did chuckle a time or two. You are a gifted writer! My hub can not refrain himself from commenting on her *style* choices any time he sees her on the tube. It's kind of a family joke around here! Hate the full tailed skirts with sweaters even at what I have thought to be rather formal or at least dressy events. Oh well..
I don't know if I like the dress or if I think it looks like a very fancy table cloth she's wearing. I've got mixed feelings.
So what is it when you "fight" on this blog, Ducky?
I like you, but you can be SUCH a pig when it comes to women.
If Michelle thinks it's "her" house, she better start looking for a realtor...cuz it won't be "her's" much longer.
And the way the media swoons over her is silly. She can be pretty, and she has an eye for fashion, but surely we aren't this easily impressed?! My vote for most fashionable First Lady is Carla Bruni.
Did you see what Hillary wore? Sheesh.

I say:
How does Duck know oh-so-well what a cat fight is?
Sorry, I couldn't help tossing in that little barb.
Because he's a girly man indeed AOW.
The rule of thumb, I believe is, "the clothes should not wear the woman". I know Michelle's in there somewhere!
Pris
Red and black? hmmmm, sounds familiar...
Remember this?
It's no accident.
Yes, Cube. Who could forget it. THAT'S the BLACK WIDOW dress I mentioned. So symbolic. Suck the nation dry. And then there was the white Inaugural gown that looked like a bale of cotton with tufts of Kleenex stuck to it. I live in cotton country, so I know what a bale of cotton looks like.
Silvrlady
I agree with some of you...she can look really good, no doubt about it. But, the ARMS thing is getting old; and to have had the dress altered to show off her arms? eeeoo
Pam, thanks! You nailed it with the sweater/full skirts. It's SO not a good look for her it's the first thing I thought of when I read SUCH fawning about how she's always "Spot on".... she's been doing this very full fifties-type of skirt with a cropped sweater WAY too much and it doesn't suit her at all. So many other things do that I can't figure out why her dressers are doing that to her.
Jen, that's nice. What do you like about Ducky?
Anybody else notice the MY HOUSE line I wrote at the top? MY HOUSE??? That was so inappropriate it really gave me pause (and a stomach ache:-)
AOW, I've got to find what hillary wore. She, too, is a fashion booboo...why the long hair? She actually looks quite nice when it's shorter and fuller and, for some reason, the long thing is all she wears now and it's AWFUL. I was thinking before Chelsea's wedding that she was growing it out for some great hairstyle, but she's still long. Maybe it's easier just to comb the mess down when she hasn't a hairdresser with her? I don't know. But, there's another woman who could look a lot better and doesn't.
Red/Black...does she like Stendahl? But, seriously..WHY??
And why RED for CHINA?!!!
Oh, they had RIB EYE STEAK! mm.
And Michelle's very favorite LOBSTER that they served at those rock'n roll Wednesday nights at their White House parties..are those still going on? I know the media'd hide them if they were.......anybody know?
How so Jen, I don't know what else you'd call harping about Michelle's gown.
To me the subjects about a cut above Justin Bieber's latest tweet.
I also think it's unfair that Michelle gets the once over and Laura Bush drew a pass. Pickles wasn't a snappy dresser either. No Jacqueline Kennedy, anyway.
Her house my arse! The outhouse would be more her style and even it would begin to depreciate the day she moved in, just as the White House has done.
z, I happen to have a great personality and a terrific sense of humor.
While in the people's White House (not THEIR house)Laura Bush was a gracious lady who had no need to put on airs (att'n. Ducky) & try to be something she wasn't. She didn't set out to be a fashion plate. One thing she is, which the Mooch is not & never will be, is a lady in every respect. Class is something you are born with, you can't put it on like a coat. It won't fit.
Silvrlady
Yeah, The White House may be Michelle's home for the next couple of years, but it is not HER house.
And that dress... shudder. Note to Michelle: don't wear stuff that bears your shoulders. Ever. Thank you.
just cozing up to human rights violators Z..sick!
This morning I heard the sound bite on WLS-AM 890 where she welcomed visitors to HER (she said 'MY') house. I almost gagged when I heard that!
Silvrlady
"Hate the full tailed skirts with sweaters..."
Probably for the same reason they ripped ole Hillary for her rear of FULL of pantsuits!!
Gawd knows Michele has a more than an adequate ( BBB ). The woman needs a license for that extra trailer. ( Just like Hil )
"it would begin to depreciate the day she moved in"
It already has depreciated the value of not only the WH, but the Presidency as well.
A perfect example of why you can't turn a sow's ear into a silk purse. No amount of lobster, caviar, fawning, or silk will do it. Put a sidesaddle on a pig, it's still a pig.
Silvrlady
Actually, I think the dress is beautiful. It is all of the hype and fawning that leaves me cold.
I did notice the "My House." Leaves one cold doesn't it?
"Pig" isn't the term I'd use...
Tell you the truth, I'd love to have her makeup/hair people do me up because they've done wonders with her and I don't find her ugly like some do, I actually think she looks attractive from time to time...BUT, I do think she's taken a lot of advantage of the position; more luxuries than the past First Ladies, that's for sure. And, don't forget, these are only indulgences we've heard of, things they couldn't hide; with such a sycophantic media that I couldn't even FIND those AWFUL photos of her in really nightmare outfits that most of you've had emailed to you is QUITE telling, especially when I'd Googled MICHELLE OBAMA FASHION MISTAKES in about 10 permutations and still couldn't find a negative photo...imagine?
I posted this blog mostly to expose that comment that has had no media exposure (none)...imagine if Mrs. Bush had said "welcome to MY HOUSE?" WOW.
Also, the fact that they altered her dress to show off the arms really showed me something about her conceit that's revealing.
Hi, Gramma..>I think the dress is beautiful, too, but do you notice that the 'off the shoulder' thing almost looks like they'd pulled it down? Normally, with a dress made for that, you don't see extra fabric behind and in front, that pucker happens when you pull a sleeve down (trust me, I KNOW :-) WHen I've sung in clubs, I've often worn off the shoulder stuff.......
But, they do say they altered the dress to show off the arms so maybe something happened then!
It's mostly those AWFUL short, puffy skirts with cropped sweaters and flat shoes she really needs to AVOID.

SilvrLady just sent me this link....anybody know if these expensive parties are still being held?
Might be she shows off those arms too remind "The One" who really gave him a fat lip ( needing stiches ) in the WH BB game?
Could be! But the truth is EGO; remember when the media went NUTS over MICHELLE OBAMA'S TONED ARMS!!?
That's when, suddenly, she's wearing sleeveless ALL the time.
Still, she COULD give him a "shellackin'" He's getting used to those by now :-)
My comment on the dress was that it did not fit properly, one shoulder falling off, who does her alterations? What was the designer thinking?
As to her comments about "her house", it is not her house, it is the "people's house". Arrogant ...

A discussion?
Z, I like Ducky b/c he has good taste in music and has some insights that I can appreciate...but then sometimes (like the rest of us) he can't see the flaws in himself that he so quickly sees in others.
We're all SO much more alike than we realize or admit.
::I'll duck the cyber-tomatoes now::
Z, it's because she's like michelle, like you know, it's like michelle obama, OMG, it's michelle, like OMG...
Debbie, see my remarks....I KNOW when I've tried to pull a sleeve over a shoulder, the fabric bunches in the front and back and this one does that........what was she thinking?
Jen, I'm not shallow enough to think Ducky has no good sides, believe me xxx I just wondered what you liked.
Taste in music? He's seems to be so belittlingly dismissive of so much I'm surprised at that, but maybe.
The problem with DUcky HERE is that I have to be more ideological because the minute I slightly criticize the Right, I'd never hear the end of it from him. That makes me sad; it's one of the shortfalls of my blog for me. We'd have FAR more interesting discussions if he could suck it up and argue like a man and not belittle and use name-calling.
MK :-) OH m'GOD! :-)
Anyone else remember "Reagan Red" and Nancy's preference for the color?
He's seems to be so belittlingly dismissive of so much

Yeah, I just laugh at that, most of the time. I must have had some arrogant snot in my early life at some time.
He reminds me of that friend I had in middle school who was unintentionally offensive and somewhat socially inept. I always had to tell her that what she just said was rude or that she needed to brush her hair.
LOL!
"I must admit this is the swankest government housing I've ever been in. You've even got the flies and rats and artificial rotting garbage, crack smoke and urine smell. So, tell us, Mrs. Obama. Who did the spraypaint refinishings in rhe hallway decor? Crips and Bloods Unlimited?"
Ducky, think. Nobody's saying
'never wear red'. That was a little lame even for you.
I know, you lefties, if you felt like I did about MIchelle wearing red for the CHinese, you'd would make a LAW saying nobody can EVER wear read again. geesh
Think red states v. blue states and you'll feel better.
Amicuss
Blackie O looks stunning in that red dress.
