Americans pay, illegals do not

What do we say to Americans who worked hard to send their children to college?   How do we explain to mothers and fathers born here, sacrificing so much, and who don't get help like that which illegals are getting as explained in the following article?

California Senate Approves part of California Dream Act:  Teresa Watanabe and Patrick McGreevy, Los Angeles Times, September 1, 2011

The college dreams of thousands of students who are illegal immigrants moved closer to fulfillment Wednesday after the state Senate approved a bill that for the first time would give them access to public financial aid.
Part of a two-bill package known as the California Dream Act, the measure would allow undocumented students who qualify for reduced in-state tuition to apply for Cal Grants, community college waivers and other public aid programs. To be eligible, they must be California high school graduates who attended schools in the state at least three years, and demonstrate financial need and academic merit.

But opponents decried the bill, AB 131, saying the state could not afford new spending, particularly on illegal immigrants.
“It’s against the rule of law for benefits to be given out to people here without legal status,” Sen. Doug La Malfa (R-Richvale) said in an interview. “People are just insulted. The state is out of money and we are opening a new door here for more funds to be expended.”
The measure passed 22-11 on a party-line vote, with Democratic support and Republican opposition. It is expected to return this week to the Assembly, which previously approved it, for concurrence on Senate amendments. If approved, it will be sent to Gov. Jerry Brown for his signature.

I question how, at this dreadful financial time, this could happen?  And, again, we're rewarding illegals...many of whom are good people and came here for a better life, but REALLY?    Do we push aside Americans and tell them their kids don't get benefits illegals do?
Please don't make this a 'bash California' comments thread...that doesn't help.   I'm asking you what we tell parents, and don't even think this can't happen in every state where liberals are in charge.

I'm wondering if a good private sector solution would be for national businesses to downgrade diplomas from California universities in hiring decisions.

"Oh, you went to the school that gives illegal immigrants a free ride? Too bad. Next."

In court after my car accident, I learned to my chagrin that the court automatically labeled me as "rich" because I was an American citizen! Never mind that the accident resulted from the negligence of an illegal immigrant who ran a four-way stop sign and plowed into me, thus ruining my lower back for life.

I was told by an officer of the court during arbitration, "If the situation were reversed and you had done this to a poor immigrant, he'd have taken you to the cleaner's. The sympathies of the court are with the immigrant."

So, I'm thinking that the sympathies of California lie with the immigrant population. The citizens can "fend for themselves."

Absolutely unfathonable! This is the result of sick, irrational thinking...which is the only kind of thinking liberal/progressives can do.

It's a state's rights issue.

This is California's decision and California taxpayers will pay for it.

They try this crap in Colorado (progressives are trying to californicate us) every legislative session but it always gets shot down, thank God.

Our Maryland legislature tried to foist this one upon Maryland's taxpayers last legislative session. We successfully petitioned to put it on the ballot, where it will very likely get thrown out and never go into effect.

Some "socialism" from the Tea Party, eh, beamish?

Silverfiddle,
What starts out in California typically gets adopted throughout the United States -- over time.

Some kind of similar bill or law is afoot Maryland right now.

And just watch. California will be lobbying for a federal bailout as a result of this decision.

California, regardless of their leaning on social policy, should not be opening up new ways to spend money.

However Joe said "This is the result of sick, irrational thinking...which is the only kind of thinking liberal/progressives can do.

Really Joe? Are you aware that Gov. Perry of Texas, the current front runner of the Republican Party, signed a bill into law in Texas giving in-state tuition rates to illegals immigrants?

Does this make his thinking sick and irrational too?

Conservatives in Texas believe it is good to help the education of people who are here illegally.

Here's Perry's quote on the issue...

"To punish these young Texans for their parents' actions is not what America has always been about,"

SIlver is correct, this does seem to be a states issue, and in fact Perry has made that argument.

What troubles me is why people reflexively assume only people on the left support this...

Pris said...

I called my state assemblywoman's office and sure enough she supported this. I told the young man in her office, we're broke! Doesn't the assembywoman understand that?

Then I told him, if my son could work his way through college anyone can. The thought never crossed our minds to go to the state for a grant.

He couldn't even relate to what I was saying, that's how soft and spoiled today's youth is.

If young people want a college education they can work for it. They're young and strong, and if they want it badly enough, they can do it.

To have to support their education is to add insult to injury IMO.

The legislature in Sacramento are the same people who got us into this mess, yet, the damn fools keep voting them in.

Then to top it all off, they elected Governor Moonbeam for his second stint as Governor.

These people are addicted to spending money, even though there isn't any.

About all we could tell those parents Z mentioned, is to call their state reps. and the Governor's office. They should be inundated with calls!!

Sf, It won't be long before Obama gets this done on a national level! So, while it's a California problem right now, it won't be long before it's everyone's problem.

It wouldn't surprise me a bit, if another executive order is written just for this. Obama has found out he can rule through fiat, and no one says a word about it!

Z said...

Dave, "What troubles me is why people reflexively assume only people on the left support this..."
Is this wisdom at a time of terrible financial problems or a way of getting votes?
The vote was totally on party lines. I believe Priscilla well answers some of your questions, the reality of the situation is covered by my remarks at friends here in CA who must learn their very hard work to send their legal children to school makes them a chump.

If Perry did that, too, he's wrong. I have no problem criticizing Republican candidates; this is why we have so many most of the time...we're tough on them and nobody rises to the top by accident. I strongly doubt a GOP candidate would have ever got where Obama got if the amount of lies, inexperience, and questions about his past had been realized. Of course, the lies were revealed and he was still voted in, but...

Joe, good luck :-)

AOW: why the heck are WE funding CHINESE EDUCATIONS?

And why's it take a Republican to realize it and get it out there? Of course, the msm won't expose it, so Americans won't know except for Conservative blogs, but that apparently is fine with lots of people...I simply don't get it.

I think Silverfiddle has it right. If the citizens in California want to spend their last cent helping those who may not deserve it, that's up to them.

Higher education here in Georgia is changing. The lottery funded HOPE Scholarship that used to pay full tuition and some money for books to Georgia HS grads carrying a 3.0, is now running out of money.

The HOPE will now pay only part of the tuition, and pays nothing on books.

The HOPE GRANT (also lottery funded) was structured for those wanting to go to a tech/vocational school has changed, too. If you have a college degree of any kind you are not elligible. Rather than paying for total tuition plus $100 per semester for books, it pays only for part of the tuition, and nothing for books.

Times are tough all over, and even students have to take a hit. That's just the way it is. If a student has to wait a couple of extra years to get their degree, then they will just have to wait.

I don't know! I need to do more research on this.

More information about America's funding education in China. Excerpt:

When the U.S. Congress passed the Elementary and Secondary Education Act in 1965 and created “magnet” schools, it’s unlikely that anyone at the time thought this might lead to the creation of international magnet schools, especially ones headquartered in China. But that’s exactly Oxford Community Schools is launching this fall.

About 50 Chinese 10th graders have decided to enroll at Northeast Yucai Oxford International High School in Shenyang, China. Students there will be dual-enrolled, meaning they’ll be able to earn credits towards two diplomas: one from their China-based school and one from the Oxford school district.

Dr. William Skilling, superintendent at Oxford, has spent four years establishing NYO high school. He says there are a number of reasons why Chinese students want to enroll in this school.

“They want the American ways of teaching in China and this will be used as a model. This school will provide opportunities for students in China to not only develop better English skills, but to learn in new ways that are not test-driven. … We will create the conditions by which they learn to be members of a team, which is a foreign concept in China classrooms. We will give them opportunities to create and invent, which is a foreign idea.”

Skilling also said that many Chinese students are interested in earning an American high school diploma, because it will make it easier for them to get accepted at an American university. They’ll also have the opportunity through this program to spend at least one year studying in the United States at the Oxford International Residence Academy.

Enrolling Chinese students will pay tuition that will provide the funding for the operation of the school....

There's also a video at the above link, but I haven't watched it yet.

I wish that Mustang would weigh in on this issue. He might have knowledge about this matter.

Dave: I did not know Perry signed-off on state tuition rates for illegal aliens. But, like many of us, Perry was a Democrat before he was a Republican. It's like growing up.

Having lived in Texas, I understand why a politician would do this. It is simply buying Hispanic votes, and there are lots of them to be bought.

Perry is reportedly a master politician, and like LBJ, Bill Clinton, or Barack Obama, will not let little things like logic, facts, or morals get in his way.

It may be a good thing to have one of these "Slick Willy's" on our side for a change.

Bob, politicians are what they are.

My frequent complaint is that people, regardless of the side of the aisle cannot see the same problems, and strengths of the politicians sitting on the other side.

Reagan was a great leader. So was Clinton.

Reagan's Admin broke some laws regarding Iran/Contra, just like the Dems have done when they felt they were doing the best thing for the country.

The Dream Act is a payoff to Obama's allies in Social Science faculty lounges populated by Bill Ayers. I would love to see Rick Perry ask why Americans should subsidize the behavior of Ayers and Rashid Khalidi.

Higher ed costs are even more out of control than medical costs but the Old Bolshevik Club keeps featherbedding and producing worthless degrees and scholarship.

On a personal level cases of illegal immigration should be handled by immigration officers in
accordance with the laws and common
sense.

Dave, this might be the first time I've agreed with everything you say in your last comment and the tone.

Sadly, Conservative bloggers must spend our time waking people up to the things Obama's doing which most of us find appalling...and how the media's covering up for them.
If you read my blog, you don't have to say "WHAT'S HE DOING and WHAT MEDIA SILENCE?" :-) It's all there and there are so many stories I don't post here.
There's almost nothing I can compliment Obama on; no strengths I can enumerate, that's for SURE.
Generally, yes...both sides have strengths and weaknesses.

Beak: I honestly believe that ANY REPUBLICAN will annihilate Obama in ANY debate when given half the chance. Every incumbent has things the other side can slam him with during election debates, but this guy sets new precedent. He'll be armed ONLY with "But I INHERITED this mess" and "WE CANNOT CUT ENTITLEMENTS" and "WE MUST BE KIND TO ILLEGALS" (sorry, he'll not say ILLEGAL, it will be "UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS")...
The Republican will trounce him.

And, of course, we have to worry about voter fraud.

And, if try to change the voting laws, we're accused of holding people back from voting. In Europe, one must need a photo ID and can ONLY vote ONCE because the vote's recorded. No more of that ridiculous PROVISIONAL VOTING...did you know those books people sign do NOT GET OPENED? They can literally go from precinct to precinct and say"I moved and forgot to update"..they can sign the book, vote, and off they go! I've seen it myself MANY times. I also saw a care giver vote for an old lady in a wheel chair with her tongue hanging out (I had to be indelicate but..it's the truth). I've seen a lot of what seemed fraudulant..all hippie types...in '08, it was attractive Black young women...cell phones, signing provisional books and back in the car! When I asked about one, I was told "Well, she lives too far from work and could only vote now" I could only say, "are you KIDDING ME?" to which I got quite a lot of looks.
Another Black young woman who was voting at the time I complained (in a Republican booth) said "that shouldn't be allowed"...I went up and squeezed her arm and gave her a HUGE smile. What a girl!
My friend used to work in a Black part of L.A...for 35 years or so, and her boss, a doctor, would ask on voting day, for conversation sake "did you vote today?" to his patients, mostly elderly Black people...many of them, every voting year, would say "Oh, yes! Some young people came when I got my absentee ballot and they showed me who to vote for and took it in for me!" My friend was SHOCKED.

Sadly, people don't DO something about this stuff when they witness it, though. Even I felt quite intimidated even speaking up in the little, ineffective way, I did. How could we PROVE anything? That's the ace in the hole for FRAUD.

Anyway, we can bitch all we want, the left's winning on this stuff because we're shamed into silence because if we believe in conscientious voting we are apparently also for OPPRESSING VOTERS! GAD.

Yup. The "national socialism" kind.

You know, the kind that says it's okay for there to be $900 Billion in uncollectable, defaulted student loans bankrupting the system as long as the socialist largesse only goes to Americans.

The despicably imbecilic left-wing twits that make up the rank and file of the Tea Party "movement" are always going to resort to populism. They're the first ones to the ramparts to defend the welfare state from the Mexicans. "It's our Social Security Ponzi scheme! Get yer own!"

I don't have a problem with students borrowing to obtain their certificates of idiocy from any licensed indoctrination center, provided they have some collateral or means of repaying the loan.

No students should be allowed to not repay their education loans. No one should recieve a home loan they have no means to pay back.

Better late than never. It is rather naive to expect productivity and accomplishment from Baby Boomers this late in the game. Most can't program a VCR. Can't really expect them to have forethought retirement at their own expense.
