Please continue with the great conversation in COMMENTS on the post below, but I just had to post this beauty here today, too...........

I didn't believe my stepdaughter, Ms Z, when she emailed me about five shots of this amazing blue water.    It's around Mangareva, which is in French Polynesia, where they are now, crossing from Chile to New Zealand........They'll spend a few months island hopping in this area.

That is the REAL BLUE color, folks.............I've never seen that color ocean.  Ms Z was thrilled to finally catch the color............Isn't it gorgeous?

The color of the waters around the Hawaiian islands is that color as well. I've seen it myself.

That's why it's often referred to as "Blue Hawaii."

Here's NASA's explanation.

Deep Water too.

Cobalt Blue...

Maybe he had it wrong.

I doubt it... as Homer put it in the Iliad, the "wine dark sea..."

...was east of Corfu. ;)

Shaw, I never saw THAT shade of blue there..I'm glad you've been able to.
And thanks for the NASA explanation.

Thersites, maybe Homer wrote that after a naval battle!?

This is the most amazing blue I have ever seen in nature; except for certain tiny fish in aquarium, I suppose.

If you could all only read Ms Z's emails from this world sailing trip...and all the photos. She's going to speak to a group here in LA in November, and I mentioned this to a member of the Women's Sailing Assn of Santa Monica Bay, who would like to schedule a talk, too.
She's just reached French Polynesia and will be staying in that area for quite a while...everywhere but Tahiti, apparently, because of the tourists; but she's hoping to at least get there for an afternoon.

Oh, that's lovely. The waters there are so blue they look unreal. I hope she and hubby have an enjoyable and safe vacation, that they come back with loads of happy memories.

Z, that is fantastic. Thanks for sharing.

That really is GORGEOUS, Z. The sea looks like precious jewel.

Z,

Could you publish selection of her emails -- edited for anonymity, of course? I'll bet it would make a wonderful blog post -- or maybe a whole series.

Just that one beautiful picture makes a very welcome change of pace.

I think we could all use a little "soul food" like this along about now.

Something to think about anyway ....

When sunlight hits the ocean, some of the light is reflected back …

OMG … the ocean is responsible for global warming?

Homer was almost certainly "blind"... ;)

Now I must be off to investigate more important philosophical matters.

Ciao, bella!

FT, I almost published something she wrote the other day; in fact, it's backed up on my POSTS PAGE of published, unpublished, drafts, etc....She sends tons of pictures but I hate to bog the blog down with them...even though she's an exquisite photographer. I'll try to remember to send you some to your email address in the future if you like.

Maybe I'll publish something this week; thanks for asking.
isn't that blue INCREDIBLE????

Z,
I've seen that color off the coast of SE Asia. Kind of a dichotomy in a war zone.

Boy, L&O, I've been to a lot of places, and I live almost 3 miles from Santa Monica beach, whose appearance changes by the minute, but I have NEVER seen an ocean that COBALT blue, as Imp called it.
It must be amazing to see in person...it's like someone dropped a beautiful ink into the water.

I don't know where Shaw was in Hawaii....but that blue blows away the water off of Oahu....not even in the same family of beautiful.

Z - Ms. Z's picture of the blue of theh water is absolutely gorgeous.
It doesn't look real.

CI, Ms Z just emailed thanking everybody for their comments and she, too, as much as she's covered Hawaii, never saw blue this vivid there.

Sue, it does look fake, doesn't it!!

Can you have a Philly cheesesteak this Sunday? Email me :-)

Sue...she is very adventurous and VERY strong-minded (like her dad)..she really struggled with that 3 weeks with seeing NOTHING BUT WATER.....but she made up her mind she'd be okay and she got through it... we talked about it a lot when she came from Buenos Aires for Christmas....I'm very proud of her decision and how she thought it over.
I swear I couldn't do this...NO WAY. Of course, I haven't really the interest, either, but...
