BEIJING (AP) — China's state broadcaster isn't saying why the station ran the music to "America the Beautiful" during the gala live broadcast of the country's latest space launch.
Strains of the famed American patriotic tune rang out following the launch of the Tiang Gong-1 experimental space station module late Thursday night.
It wasn't clear why the music had been picked or whether CCTV producers were aware of the origins of the song, whose lyrics include the lines "America! America! God shed His grace on thee."
An operator answering phones at CCTV's Beijing headquarters on Friday said no spokesman was available and calls to the station's international affairs department rang unanswered.
I got that HERE. Pretty amazing. And why do you suppose the writer of the article singled out the line above "God shed His grace on thee?" I found this whole thing fascinating, how about you?

Perhaps they were being ironic?
Well it's been a component of successful American space launches. Maybe they thought it was necessary ;)
I tend to see the irony as well as SF? Or maybe the fact we are paying for it and they are mocking our famous quote "Only in America".
Should be interesting though to find out what the real reason for it was.
I like Beamish's positive attitude.
Z - Maybe they just wanted to see if anyone was paying attention at their launch. :-)
It is a beautiful song - not to mention the meaningful lyrics - maybe they just like it...
Let us know if you find out the reason.
I find it ironic that we'd have to teach the Chinese rocket science ;)
Lisa, that's my thought; We're paying for it, so.. a little sarcastic jab works for them.
Also, since Obama's gutting our space program, maybe it's a kind of homage to our greatness; just the start of nasty countries showing us who's boss now?
OR, maybe.........they realize all that America's given to them (Clinton did quite a job, remember? Or would you rather forget, too?) and want to honor us that way?
Just chiding us on our decline.
Goes along with the closing of the particle collider outside Chicago today. Europe has taken over that research.
Don't forget, Ducky, you've always said America is not exceptional (though unable to say which country IS), and most of us believe Obama is of your same sentiment.
We're now reaping what he's sown.
a tragedy for the world, not just us...I'll be waiting for CHina and Korea to come to the aid of tsunami victims next time anybody in the world needs it.
"Also, since Obama's gutting our space program, maybe it's a kind of homage to our greatness; just the start of nasty countries showing us who's boss now?"
Z, I tend to agree with you. It's one last recognition of who and what we WERE, while they leave us in the dust.
To think, we led the world in space technology, and have been reduced to watching what other countries accomplish in the space arena.
This is so painful for me to see given that there is so much more to learn from the space frontier.
Mr. Pris worked in the space program back in it's heyday, when we saw no limit to what we could do, if we had the drive to do it.
Those Americans were gung ho, unwilling to accept failure, and they achieved their goal, only now to see mediocrity, and apathy.
That vision seems to be gone, and I'm truly sad. Now, we hear we have to regress because of a phony
climate crisis.
We hear we have to lower expectations instead of forward thinking, and greater
accomplishments.
This is not the legacy we should leave our children.
I want them to have a positive vision, the freedom to think outside the box, and to accomplish more than our generation ever dreamed of.
That's right z, two years of Obama is what caused this, exclusively. Bore me later.
We are a bunch of children who are the victims of comfort (and that's going to change).
We are going to become more and more impotent as a people with nothing much but a huge military and that will be dangerous.
" we led the world in space technology, and have been reduced to watching what other countries accomplish in the space arena."
Yes we did...but NASA now has a new agenda and program...Muslim outreach around the planet. That should make us all warm and fuzzy.
I heard that at a resent football game they sang the national anthem in Spanish.
We are going to become more and more impotent as a people with nothing much but a huge military and that will be dangerous.
Don't forget Obamacare. We'll always have Obamacare.
"We are a bunch of children who are the victims of comfort (and that's going to change)."
You know Ducky, when you're not here on GEEEZ with normal responsible people, I think you're hanging out with the wrong crowd. Don't judge everyone by yourself and the company you keep!
If you want to change, go ahead, who's stopping you?
America didn't become great because we're victims of comfort.
Interesting you came up with this on the day Obama calls us soft.
Nothing like insulting all Americans while he runs for re-election!?! Typical narcissistic elitist.
Pris, America basically "became great" because we were the last economy standing after WW II after absorbing the lowest per capita casualties of the major participants.
The profits were so great that industry got complacent and we squandered the advantage very quickly.
Now, once you put aside your founding fathers worship and your homilies you'd do well to look at the reality. We got lazy, then we got cheap easy credit, then we got slammed.
And why did we get cheap easy credit? Can anyone say CRA?
In other words more of the Lefts vain morality.
Ducky, your hate for America is palpable and I'm not having it here much longer, trust me.
"Bore me?" then don't BE HERE if I BORE YOU, okay? EASY!! :-)
We "BECAME GREAT" because we have (had until leftists got into our schools) a can-do ethos that NO OTHER COUNTRY has. My own foreign husband said he'd never seen a country of people who work so hard, who help others so much....
This is something which you don't have and I'm sorry for you but don't even begin to believe WE don't have it and that Pris and me and most of the others here feel PROUD of this country and PROUD that immigrants came here in DROVES to have better lives; learned the language miraculously quickly, wouldn't DREAM of flying their own flad and couldn't wait till they became American CITIZENS.
THis is something you'll NEVER EVER understand, so please, respond to other subjects, but not on what made this country great; you and your ilk are too busy whining and naysaying and pulling the covers over your heads ...we will NOT.
...on the day Obama calls us soft.
I saw that as Obama proposing to put Viagra in the drinking water.
Beamish...did you get that email joke where some guy invented Liquid Viagra?
Sorry to be a little indelicate at the blog but it really made me laugh when the punchline was "so a guy can pour himself a stiff one!" :-)
Now, once you put aside your founding fathers worship and your homilies
That is telling
Chuck, extremely..it's what led to my comment above yours.
VERY telling. And very sad.
Mr. Brian S, they tell me Dodger Stadium here in L.A. is literally 90% full of Mexicans many of whom may not know the national anthem in English. At least they sang OUR national anthem, or did they?
I hate the whole thing. Since when are we a big dirty doormat to have people come here and not speak English? Well, the left's won in their blockage of a bill that would make English the language; and think how much they've COST US in special signs everywhere, special books at the DMV, etc.
And the feeling of immigrants that we're not worth their learning our language.
"The soft bigotry of low expectations" again....gee, immigrants used to learn enough English at least to get by.
I guess the Left thinks they're too stupid to now. Or doesn't think America deserves to have immigrants respect us anymore.
"you and your ilk are too busy whining and naysaying and pulling the covers over your heads ..."
Yes...Ms.Z...from their summer homes on Martha's, P Town and of course the Hamptons and Duck in Rockport.
Talk about comfort and cushy lives? Americans have made available to the world...and led the world for the last 100 years in science, manufacturing, physics, mathematics, energy, aviation, computing, electronics, medicine, weapons of defense, space exploration, mobility, transportation..and I've forgotten some I'm sure.
The entire world has benefited from our technology and industries. With the exception of the 4th world nomads who've given the world nothing except sorrow..and guilt..where none was needed or necessary.
How many Nobel Prize winners has America made compared to the rest of the world? Name me one that the Arabs have.
Ducky, you are a prime example of the "me" generation, and that is, your perception that nothing existed nor mattered before you came along.
You think you have the answers, but what you possess is ignorance. You are one of the most shallow of people I've ever come across.
A Muslim President, says Investors... Obama enjoys consistently high approval ratings from Muslims.
Obama: ‘I Don’t Think Ethics’ Was My Favorite Subject, Basketball was.
Sheila Jackson Lee to Conservative Bloggers: ‘Shut Up!’, ....Only liberals are allowed to play racial politics.
Teachers fired for using "white Paper" in classrooms.
And on...and on...and on.
I tend to think along Silverfiddle's lines-- mocking us?
Name me one that the Arabs have.

I think it's most telling that the winner of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize hosted a state dinner for the guy that is holding the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize in a political prison.
