Mr. Obama feels sad about Daschle's withdrawal....

I can understand that Mr. Obama's greeting the withdrawal from his nomination with 'sadness and regret' but to add that Daschle still has the 'confidence of the president', as Sen Dick Durbin suggests, makes me nervous.

Would you have confidence in someone who so clearly broke the tax rules that even the NEW YORK TIMES and WASHINGTON POST called for his withdrawal? WHAT? Even THEY thought it was too much, especially after Geithner's indiscretions. Is something changing here? Can we hope? (oops..HOPE........maybe that's the reason for the Obama campaign mantra...HOPE that we can finally clean this country up via watching the Democrats' dirty laundry keep them from office. No, I'm pretty sure that's not what they meant)

Dare we ................HOPE?

UPDATE: Mr. Obama says he "screwed up". He's giving interviews saying he didn't handle the Daschle thing well. I'm not sure, but I'm thinking I'd rather have a president NOT apologize and say he screwed up. Before the campaign, he was frequently "inartful" and "should have done better"...but as much as I admire honesty and do give him some credit for looking at where he might have done a less than stellar job, I'm thinking an American President might not want to say this....quite so much? Maybe it's just me.

Yes, we dare HOPE, Z.

I think we can still give some credit to Mr. Dashle because he really could have stayed in there and they would put him through without a doubt, so let's pat him on the back at least a little.

Granted I'm sure that it could have been done earlier, but better late than never, right?

Blessings.

I respectfully disagree IHS. I just think he's a spineless weenie with no fight.

DaBlade, could you ellaborate on what you mean by that?

I do feel sad for him as an open crook is easier to expose and keep an eye on.

Mr. Obama may feel sad about Daschle's withdrawal --- but I SURE DON'T.

He's somewhat to the left of Karl Marx. It was hoped that HE could do what Hillary and Ira Magaziner failed to do --- IMPOSE Socialized Medicine on this country.

I benefit from Medicare, but I wish with all my heart it had NEVER come into existence.

When EVERYBODY gets on medicare, you will a SEVENTY-PERCENT Income Tax --- or the equivalent thereof bilked from us through other channels.

As P.J. O'Rourke famously said many years ago, "If you think health care is expensive NOW, just wait until it's FREE."

I don't care much about people's tax situation. What I care about i their POLICIES and stated AIMS.

Better crooked conservative than an honest Marxist. ;-)

Daschle may not look like a dirty dog, burt he really IS. I was SO happy when he was DEFEATED in his last run for the senate.

BTW whatever happened to the senator Tim Somebody or Other who had a stroke? You NEVER hear ANYTHING about HIM anymore, do you? But he's still a member of the senate, isn't he?

The opposition thinks that a dysfunctional Democrat in power is preferable to a capable Republican.

SAD!

I.H.S...well, I think we should give people the benefit of the doubt and he did step down, but I'm sure it was political pressure. I'm sorry that he'd have THOUGHT he could get by with such a really grievous indiscretion like his.
You know, politically, I think he'd have made it in if Geithner hadn't gotten approved with a big I.R.S. problem, too...I think the Dems knew they can't push that far...Yes, even THEM !! (Smile)

One does have to wonder. Does President Obama have such an incompetent staff that they don't bother to do a background check on their nominees, or is it just that they don't expect to be questioned or challenged because they're above the usual, acceptable, order of things?

Either way this falls at the President's feet. Did he really think he would get what he wanted no questions asked? I think so.

After all he's the one who said "I won", as did Nancy Pelosi. Yes Mr. President you won, but you weren't crowned.

The Democrats in Washington are behaving as people who are heady with wine. Or to be more succinct, drunk with power.

As of now, they're overplaying their hand. Going for anything and everything they want like kids in a candy store, and totally undisciplined.

Looks to me like the inmates are running the asylum.

Pris,

Most of Obama's Senate and current Presidential staff was built out of ex-Daschle staffers. I think Obama felt obligated to offer a post to their ex-boss. And like IHS, I am pleased to see him withdraw of his own volition.

Z..what I'm wondering is whether or not Daschle did decide to step down, on his own, or did someone else strongly suggest that he do so?

Z, you just don't get it. Those rules are for us to follow, not for the people taking care of us. It's ok for those pigs to walk on two legs.

I said it when Daschle left the Senate and I'll say it again.

"Hey Tommy! Burger King is hiring!"

Tell me Daschle doesn't look like a Burger King night shift manager.

LOL! He sure does!

I'll bet that buyer's remorse is setting in now...

beamish. absolutely, he does...!!

Z, one of the things I'm taking from Obama's apology is that he's not upset about naming a tax cheat, he's upset that they did not sell it better. It's a case of he's sorry he got caught, not that he did it in the first place. This is concerning.

This was too egregious even for the democrats to push through. All is not lost yet. Maybe there is some hope.

naw he was too busy talking to 7 year olds today..pfftt!

Hey Z ... as a girl who knows a thing or two about big corporate apologies, I'd rather not see a president apologize for this type of thing. Apologies lose their power very quickly. Save it for the big stuff ... he's gonna need it.

Did you all hear Obama went to read at a school and told the children he was tired of being in the White House? I just don't want this from a president.
I SO hope he starts to at least like the job.
It really saddened me a lot.

I feel bad about Daschle's withdrawal too. We don't have nearly enough crooks in public office.

Z,

I can't believe I am agreeing with Obama about something so soon after he gets in the place! I'm EXCEEDING tired of him being there too!

The only ones who are sad about Daschle (or as he is known on leftist boards Da**h*l*) are the drug and insurance companies. Now maybe he picks someone who cares about people's issues, I doubt it.

Very glad that Obama took a black eye early. Maybe he realizes his base doesn't want Clinton's third term, we want a progressive presidency.

Z said...

David, that is FUNNNY!!
Imagine what a message it sent to little kids? They are HYPED on THE ONE and he disrespects the White House that much? But HE'll expect respect, trust me.
I found it sad.
I did feel it might have been taken out of context (sit DOWN, everybody...I have to be honest here!)..and he was joking....but these are kids ! They won't react to that any better than Harry Reid calling the president a liar in front of kids. Just not good.

Ducky...I am hoping for enough black eyes that Obama will wake up and do the right thing...vet people better, stop appointing Chicago types for office in OUR government...etc.
As even MSNBC said this morning "He's finding that Democrats have just as many indiscretions as Republicans" Of course, that's typical and hilarious as 'good news, bad news', they got their swipe in, but...

Daschle didn't get off "Scot-free," he PAID almost 150K. And he voluntarily WITHDREW.

What else do you want --- BLOOD?

I dislike Daschle's views and ambitions, but for Heavens' sake, he's not Al Capone, and for his advanced age, he's a fine-looking man in superb physical condition.

BTW, to a man like Tim Geithner, who probably has made hundreds of millions, if not more, 34K spread over a three or four year period is CHICKEN FEED. It's like you and I overlooking maybe fifty or hundred bucks. Such lapses are almost INEVITABLE to those whose finances are highly complex.

Geithner was a Republican, until just recently, and reportedly has a giant brain. I'll be he didn't even know about the tax he owed. I have an excellent accountant, who is an enormous help to me, but --- even HE --- occasionally makes an honest mistake every now and then.

NO ONE could POSSIBLY have read and digested the TAX CODE. It is something like SEVENTY-THOUSAND PAGES in length. With D'Rats in power it will probably burgeon to seven-HUNDRED-thousand pages ere long.

I do understand serious annoyance with the double-standard that ALWAYS seems to favor D'Rats --- even when Republicans are in power --- but if we stoop to THEIR level of pettiness and hypocrisy, they will REALLY have won the game --- once and for all.

FT....do you understand it's the EXCUSES they give that are hypocritical and insulting to our intelligence?
Have you EVER had a letter from the IRS that didn't worry YOU!? We have, and we WORRIED, trust me.
Also, we had a tax situation after having lived in Europe and man, we PAID,baby, we PAID$$$
Today? I'd say "I'll pay after Geithner pays" And I'd have every right to. That's a bad precedent.

Daschle is someone I've never agreed with on much but I don't vilify HIM, I am disappointed in him that he knew this information and didn't give it up when vetted... Frankly, it's known he didn't and that he knew, and that was unfair to the obama people...grossly unfair.

Nobody's out for blood...we're out for fairness; everybody, Rep and Dem, should be treated the same for our indiscretions; that it FINALLY is happening should not be a time conservatives call foul.

Want a "progresive Presidency?"

Try Sweden.

Of course, that's not been working out too well for them.

For starters, Sweden today is wracked with racial unrest (teeming ghettos of non-Swedish speaking Arabic people) and a crime rate eerily reminiscent of New York in the 1970s;

In 2003 New York City had: 591 homicides - Sweden had 189. (N.B. Pela notes; “About the murder rates- you have to keep in mind that it is very hard to get someone convicted for murder here in Sweden. Most killers are just sentenced for manslaughter and those convictions are not listed under homicides." A fair point. See: http://gummihund.blogspot.com/2008/10/ok-im-nagging-but-once-again.html

NY City had 1,789 rapes - Sweden had 2,565.

NYC had 18,764 aggravated assaults - Sweden had 65,175.

NYC had 29,207 burglaries, Sweden had 122,700.

It MUST be noted is that NYC has almost 1.5 times the population than does all of Sweden, so Sweden’s figures must be multiplied by 1.5 to get a per capita ratio.

Moreover, Sweden recently approved legislation in that allows for increased surveillance of crossborder telecommunications traffic. Despite some protests, "The government appears determined to ride out the criticism, claiming the measures are a necessary response to the threat from global terrorism...”

Daschle only PAID once he got CAUGHT.

And that's the point. These politicians think they are too good to follow the rules the impose upon the unwashed masses. The gov't has the audacity to raise taxes while some in the government won't pay them.

And if they truly couldn't figure out the 18,000 page tax code that THEY WRITE AND APPROVE, doesn't that say something in and of itself?
