Republican Governors face a stimulating quandary....

Republican governors are 'split' on the Stimulus package and whether they should take money from it. There are sneaky (well, everything was 'sneaky' because nobody was given time to read it, of course) little bits in it which change the way they're used to doing business; Mississippi says they have on their laws that one can't take welfare if they flatly refuse to work. That's mandated to change IF they take that part of the package. And, the same benefits will apply to part-time workers, too, which is now mandated but wasn't in the state laws.

Arnold , of course, says "Governor Sanford says that he does not want to take the federal stimulus package money. And I want to say to him: I'll take it. I'm more than happy to take his money or any other governor in this country that doesn't want to take this money, I take it, because we in California need it," he said. (from article linked above)

Here's the dilemma....David Gregory on MEET THE PRESS Sunday morning grilled Bobby Jindal with "You going to turn away money to help your UNEMPLOYED?" Get the Democrat spin? (No principles SHOULD be adhered to because PEOPLE NEED THIS! There simply IS no way to help without this entire package!..not)

Mark Sanford of S. Carolina just keeps rising in my estimation. He's for not taking money. He doesn't believe it's helpful, he doesn't want to screw his state into accepting the terms. He's read and done his homework....

But, will these principled men suffer politically (in their own party) for it? The Democrats (media, too) have done such a good job of painting this as the LAST EFFORT TO FIX AMERICA. THE PEOPLE NEED IT. IF WE DO NOT DO THIS WE MAY NEVER RECOVER, right? Will many Americans understand it's NOT the 'fix', it might be exactly what we shouldn't have? Will most Americans just want the entitlements they're being manipulated into feeling they deserve?

Quite a QUANDARY... I don't envy the principled governors, but I surely do admire them.

Just saw this: Even CNN's getting the point; Apparently, if you lost your job, you won't get help on your mortgage. Wait, even I think it might be good to help people in that condition. What's up, Nancy and Harry?

geeeeeZ readers...Below is a real dilemma....what would you suggest for these people?:

Take Joe Martinez of Bristow, Va., who fits the profile of the "responsible" homeowner Obama cited in the plan. The government contractor and his wife thought they did everything right when they bought their brand new $600,000 house two years ago. They put 5% down and got a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage they could afford.

Others in their neighborhood, however, couldn't keep up with the payments. As foreclosure rose, the value of the couple's home plummeted to $450,000, leaving them doubtful they'd ever recover their investment.

Martinez called their lender to try to get into the Hope for Homeowners program, which would reduce their loan balance to 90% of the home's current value. But they were turned down because they weren't in default....

Oh, Kris...only among principled people, though, will it cost him. Gov Perry, isn't it? The guy who mandated that vaccine against STDs for very young girls, against the will of most of the people?

I have mixed emotions about Gov. Sanford; he has not been particularly good for business in SC. However, I do agree with his stance on the "porkulus". He knows that taking that money makes the state(s) more dependent and beholding to the Feds. He also knows that when the smoke has cleared on this redistribution, the states will be stuck with a massive entitlement problem (like Cali-fornia)...and that is lousy business in the long run.

I am happy to see that a few governors have the guts to take a dim view of President Obama's Marxists fantasy.

Unfortunately, our governor here in Indiana said he would take the money. Of course, he has nothing to lose since this is his last term in office. It was very disappointing. He was in the perfect position to decline it. If he were running again I would definately NOT vote for him and I would make sure he knew it.

Of course, I still have some time to contact him, but I am in doubt that he will listen. It is irritating that more Governors don't stop and realize that the Federal Government is trying to steal away the sovereignty of the states with this bill.

Do people know that there is a provision in the bill that says if the governors decline the money that the state legistators CAN go against the gov. and accept the money then use it however they want? Hello? There is a reason for separation in state government and federal government!

I'll start with the Martinez example. They can't expect the bank to renegotiate their loan. If they bought their home to live in, and not a short term investment, the value will rise over the years.

For crying out loud, life happens, and yes folks life isn't fair.

The economy is flexible, and there has always been a risk values could go down. The Martinez's can, I believe see to it that their home is re-assessed to lower property taxes, if indeed Virginia collects property taxes.

I too admire Governor Sanford. How amazing that he should be attacked or criticized. How about Arnold saying he applauds Sanford for saving the taxpayers a few billion dollars, and will not be in the position of dancing to the Fed's tune?

Is Arnold saying it's OK to waste the Government's money? Sanford's state is obviously better run than California, and no doubt Governors like Arnold don't like being shown up, and looking like freeloaders.

Believe me folks when I say, as a Californian, knowing the fantasyland of our state legislators, however much we get out of this bailout money, the nuts in Sacramento are, already as we speak, salivating over the prospect of finding new ways to spend this money.

Does anyone here think it will go to pay down the debt? Or that they will decide to forego all the taxes they have now approved? Oh no! We have for instance a three billion dollar obligation for embryonic stem cell research here. Yes, we couldn't live without that, after all it's only money!

Yes the voters in this state are that fast and loose with our money, in response to our lawmakers doing a hell of a sales job.

And the beat goes on!

I'm with Pris. Life happens. I've lost nearly one half of the value in my home...but I'm not crying for gubmint money. You have to take the bad with the good.

Pris, ARnold was FAR more conservative before got San Francisco's Susan Kennedy as Chief of Staff...suddenly, things went to hell in a handbag, remember? VERY suddenly, I found myself listening to things he said and thinking "What has gotten into HIM!?"

Kris..is that right? Good on you people, girl! xxx

The Obama has put the entire nation in a lose/lose dilemma. It may be impossible for them to reject it, but it's also time for the states to reassert their sovereignty as much as possible. The federal government is now out of control and needs to be reigned in.

I have no doubt that hardworking people who have fallen on tough times should be helped, but this grotesque stimulus bill isn't the way to do it, nor is rewarding irresponsibility.

I guess those homeowners should just take a vacation from paying their mortgage for a few months...

Z said...

Larry, tell us why Sanford isn't good for business..it's good to hear from the horse's mouth.

Elbro, I know what you mean. But, you have principles.

Brooke, we'd sure like to skip the mortgage for a couple of months. MAn, would that be nice!

Shoprat...maybe this new TEA PARTY idea starting in Chicago will help Americans get together...
Sadly, I'm in NO STATE where our joining against socialism would help! Very sad...as many good conservatives are here, it would be tough.

BHO keeps making promises, but as far as I can tell, those promises continue to be smoke and mirrors.

I highly doubt that anything he and the Dem Congress are doing will help any individuals whom any of us personally know.

The porkulous's much-touted help with health insurance for the unemployed doesn't do Mr. AOW and I any good: he lost his job some nine months before the window opened by the bill (65% of COBRA paid by the employer for 9 months). We're stuck with the $1400/month COBRA payments until we run out COBRA -- at which point we'll qualify for HIPAA coverage.

Neither does Mr. AOW qualify for any unemployment benefits, even though he worked for the same company for 12 years. Why no benefit? He took a part time job, and that disqualified him. We'd have made more money had Mr. AOW sat on his butt instead of getting another, albeit small, source of income.

Pardon my context here, but I bet there's a bunch of lazy _______ out there in the projects who honestly think that Obama is going to get them off scott-free.

all this crap-talk about "my stimulus check" ain't happenin' and I dig it.

The last thing I'd ever do is jump on the government dole bandwagon.

Ducky's here said...

It's going to get worse folks.

AIG (which we pretty much own) is announcing a 60 BILLION loss.

So turn down the stimulus money, whatever.

John Galt is in the process of giving you a hosing you will NEVER forget. Keep talking about that loony tune Bobby Jindal.

You got the ride of your damn lives coming up and you better have some alternative. Trying some more of the Ronnie Raygun stuff that kicked off the band isn't a great idea.

Tax cuts ain't getting you out of this.

And we are still carrying hundreds of billions off the books for that moronic "war on terrorism" that the right foisted on us. Those bills are coming due.

WE ARE BROKE, FOLKS. You think this is some damn joke that's going to be resolved by Bobby Jindal? ARE YOU INSANE?

The cupboard is bare. None of it was real. Hurry up please, it's time.

Ducky's here said...

You, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, might not take the money. Why?

Mark Sanford: First, cuz it sounds like old time Stalinist grain quotas…

Ducky's here said...

Sanford: The idea that a judge would stick his filthy, Commie nose into a private contract between private parties is worse that nine Hitlers!

Ducky: Actually, bobo, judges do that now with second mortgages. And we have to do it, because as bad as it is, if we don’t fix this now then the whole system will crash.

Z said...

Ducky, you sound so desperate...
It's ALL our fault

Z said...

By the way, Ducky..just another thing:
You mean to suggest Jindal can't do it but someone like Obama CAN? Now THAT is insane. And Pelosi and Reid..? You ADMIRE THEM?

Have you seen the members of some new WH group called something like Fiscal Responsibility Oversight Group (I don't remember the ridiculous name)..?
NOTHING but leftwing NUTS.
Thanks, Democrats...we appreciate the bipartisanship.

Ducky, it's time we STOPPED partisanship....your railing at the Right for OUR getting us into this is simpleton and cheap and you know it.

Damn, even some lefties thought obama meant well when he said he'd work with both sides. Did you believe him, too? Or are you too into the slide into communism to have cared?

Do you think ANY of thinks this is FUNNY?

Pay attention Ducky:

Governor Sanford made it clear. The strings attached to the federal bailout money, which is temporary, establishes certain federal regulations the State does not now have, ultimately obligating the state to higher costs when the bailout money runs out, estimated in three years.

In other words, S. Carolina in the long run is better off without it.

Tell me Ducky, where were you when the "ride" left the station? Did you overextend yourself? Did you buy a new car every year? Did you make high risk investments? Did you ever leave someone else holding the bag? Did you run up your credit too high?

What do you mean "you got the ride of your damn lives"?

Well, Mr. Pris and I never did any of those things. When you're on this board you're talking to responsible people. So, speak for yourself please.

Furthermore, since America is broke, why are we being told about fast trains to Vegas, Government health care, free day care, free this, free that, etc. Five hundred dollar checks for people who don't pay taxes.

Politicians are on a spending binge like the country has never seen, as we speak.

Don't you dare blame President Reagan for this mess.

Blame those who thought they could bribe voters with entitlements and promises that no responsible person would ever make.

President Reagan proved supply side economics works. He didn't tell people to be careless and irresponsible. He didn't tell people to go on welfare. He never promised a free lunch. Never.

Today Obama has said he's going to cut the deficit in half by taxing the rich and businesses. Right, tax the employers, that ought to create jobs, and keep inflation down.

I wonder what the new definition of rich will be?

Ducky, Obama has the schizophrenic plan of giving away money to fool people into thinking he's doing something to help them "temporarily", while at the same time planning to expand the government by creating dependency programs and the bureaucracy so as to make everyone totally dependent on the government.

Your guy, Ducky, and your Congress are taking us to ruin and dependency. Just what the left has always wanted. Happy?

Just a side note: John Galt was a conservative. Read the book again Ducky...you missed many main points. John Galt was fighting against the nationilzation of private business, government control, and loss of freedom. And he was a capitalist...did you even read the book?

It wouldn't hurt to actually work with an open mind and read what Reagan actually believed and lived for: FREEDOM of the PEOPLE not BIG GOVERNMENT AND COMMUNISM.

(It's okay to learn about real history...don't be afraid...)

Excellent posting there, Pris.
This is a vision I have long held, since the November election, and then when I started hearing and reading about Obama's choices for a cabinet:

I just see vultures and jackals picking at a carcass, and the carcass is USA.

One gets the feeling they all know what is coming, and they are in there grabbing everything in the treasury by fistfuls and running.

If , and I hope this does not happen, we are also attacked like 9-11.. I look for that whole lame crew to just scatter.

In truth, I think for a long, long time, some of our so called numbers have been scams, though.

Like, the Dot .com bubbles.
The real estate bubbles...they were just too high, too fast.
No way was it normal.

One gets a feeling everything has been one giant ENRON type scam, or along the lines of what this Madoff fellow did.

But, no way did it happen in just a few short years, it went way way back.

I just want to some normal people to start finding solutions.

Thanks Morgan. It is frightening, isn't it? It is almost like the leftists in this government are using the villians in the book as mentors and are following their actions exactly!

Only, we don't have some mountain world we can fly to and "restart" with real values do we?

Ever read 1984? That is the final step in all this.
