Gitmo Detainees get another goody...$$$

GITMO DETAINEES ARE GETTING A NEW $750,000 SOCCER FIELD

"At a time of record deficits, a new soccer field for detainees at Camp 6 in Guantanamo Bay is just getting the finishing touches -- at a cost of $750,000 to taxpayers.
The project was the highlight of a tour Tuesday of the detention camp for reporters at the facility covering the arraignment in a military court of Majid Khan, a former Baltimore resident and the the only legal U.S. resident on trial at Guantanamo.
The project began in April 2011 and is due to finish this spring. The detainees will now have three recreation facilities at Camp 6, which is home to "highly compliant" detainees who live in a communal setting.
In addition to an indoor recreation field and the existing outdoor recreation field, the new soccer field -- selected because it is such a popular sport with detainees -- is half the size of an American football field.
The new field has been specially constructed so that the detainees "have maximum access" -- about 20 hours a day. Special passageways allow the detainees to pass into the new recreation yard without being escorted by the military."

Well, okay..so our government's not QUITE as worried about our deficit, I guess, right?   I mean, who'd spend 3/4 of a million on a new and improved soccer field for enemies in detention, ESPECIALLY when.....

"Even some of President Obama's most ardent supporters suggest the administration seems eager to close the camps and reduce the detainee population, and plea agreements with minimal jail time are a sweetheart deal for all involved."

Yup....not only do we want to make sure they don't need to be escorted by (those pesky, tough American military!), we want to build something expensive and wonderful so detainees can have access to have fun even though the place might not be open for long.   Boy, if THAT isn't typical for our government these days, I don't know what is.

And, please, leftists....NO, Z is not saying these men shouldn't get any kind of physical activity while incarcerated, and nobody here is suggesting that we need to be unnecessarily rough on those who've (allegedly)  tried to kill Americans, and this isn't a discussion about keeping Gitmo open or not.   FOCUS (if you're still reading this far before you comment), this is about the fact that they HAVE places to exercise already and we don't have the money to build this for them.  Or anybody else, for that matter.

What is the POINT in building this, folks?

I think the detainees should have physical exercise, too. How about water polo with tiger sharks?

Z - I AM TOTALLY AGAINST A SOCCER
FIELD AT GITMO.

and also conjugal visits and flat screen tvs in every room.

Maybe in the rec rooms.

But there has to be someplace where Bad People can be punished.

How many soccer fields have they provided for American POWs? Oh wait....they don't take prisoners.

Ah yes, the Taliban ones can walk the new field, reminiscing about the days when they ruled Kabul and herded apostates in the soccer stadium there and slaughtered them...

In return for indefinate detention without trial it doesn't seem like all that much.

Geneva Convention duhkky. Blame the likes of the ACLU who have blocked due process with the military tribunals.

Hey bloviating, thanks Grammar Girl.

Nice when all you short bussers have nothing but spelling correction.

And you have nothing but red herrings and ad hominems. The color of the bus matches the streak down your back.

Imp, stop it you're gonna hurt duhkkkys feelings.

Lisa, I saw that...another way to gut the military, I guess. Who'd sign up? And another way to coerce people into Obamakare. sad.

Sam, LOVE IT :-) That's a good one.

Kid, I shudder to think.

Sue, DITTO! "punished" is the key word, not coddled, right?

Elbro...man, does THAT ever nail it. I guess there are as many soccer fields as there are bibles being passed around for our men in ...oh, wait, they aren't even alive. oops.

BZ..you're right, there are very few.

How's about the FACT that we're probably closing it soon.....should we spend almost a MILLION of CHina's loans THERE?

Imp.....I'm starting to feel frustrated, too...VERY frustrated with our country.

Elbro.. I was about to type my comment to Ducky but you took the words right out of my mouth.

We should give them some ancient cultural treasures to blow up too.

So this is where the money we are cutting from military retirees health insurance is going?

If one needed an example of what Obama is all about, look no further than this screw the military and coddle terrorists week.

Duck,

In return for indefinate detention without trial it doesn't seem like all that much.

That's right. Let's keep the murderous little bastards comfortable during their stay with us.

I got your back Z

I think we need to get back to the honorable past times of water boarding and peeing on the Koran.

That makes more sense than giving our detainees a cushy place to sun themselves.

Ducky's wisdom shines fort: "In return for indefinate detention without trial it doesn't seem like all that much."

Try indefinite.

While you are at it, consult Daniel Pearl as to the value of indefinite detention vs a head job.

Did anyone tell them that the site of the soccer field use to be a hog farm?

If not then don't until they have sufficiently wallowed in the dirt there.

FYI, I mentioned this at the high school where I work....all the kids were flabbergasted. "We're paying for THAT? WHY? That's RIDICULOUS!"

I was so happy

Funny how Gitmo is still open, yet there are no protests world wide over it. I remember there were plenty back when George Bush was president, but nothing since obama took office. Funny that.

"NO, Z is not saying these men shouldn't get any kind of physical activity while incarcerated."

I agree, they should get plenty of exercise, unleash the guard dogs on them once a day and they can get plenty of exercise running, dodging, jumping etc.

Nice try Lisa. Obama has raised benefits for soldiers and veterans more than any President in recent history.

The feigned outrage of wingnuts is laughable. If you dig a little deeper and use a little critical thinking (which wingnuts don't often do) you'll find:

“...the White House and congressional Democrats” designed the supercommittee process “for one purpose: to force Republicans to choose between raising taxes or gutting defense,” said California Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon, the House Armed Services Committee chairman.

And so what if the detainees are getting an new field (although the $750 price tag coming from the liars at Fox News casts doubts for me).

I thought you were all Christians. You rather they be kept in shackles?

You wingnuts have to bitch about everything but in doing so you don't even realize you reveal yourselves as mean spirited haters and hypocrites.

elmers brother said...

He has not raised benefits. My prescriptions cost twice as much under Obama and he is raising our out of pocket expenses by as much as 345%. You're a joke liberlal dude.

elmers brother said...

And it was the Dems and the Democratic controlled Senate that would not compromise.
