Global Warming and common sense

Scientists Blast ‘Incontrovertible’ Global Warming Claims
An editorial signed by 16 prominent scientists in the Wall Street Journal takes sharp issue with calls for drastic action against global warming, asserting that the threat is far from “incontrovertible” as alarmists claim.
“A candidate for public office in any contemporary democracy may have to consider what, if anything, to do about ‘global warming,’” the article states.
“Candidates should understand that the oft-repeated claim that nearly all scientists demand that something dramatic be done to stop global warming is not true. In fact, a large and growing number of distinguished scientists and engineers do not agree that drastic actions on global warming are needed.”
The scientists point to Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ivar Giaever, who resigned from the American Physical Society in September due to the organization’s position that the evidence for global warming is “incontrovertible” and the threat requires “mitigating actions” to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The 16 scientists — including Richard Lindzen, professor of atmospheric sciences at MIT, and William Happer, professor of physics at Princeton — say in the Journal piece: “In spite of a multidecade international campaign to enforce the message that increasing amounts of the ‘pollutant’ carbon dioxide will destroy civilization, large numbers of scientists, many very prominent, share the opinions of Dr. Giaever.
“The reason is a collection of stubborn scientific facts.”
The “most inconvenient” fact cited by the scientists is the lack of global warming over the past 10 years.
Also, in the 22 years since the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change began issuing projections, warming has consistently been less than predicted.
This suggests that “computer models have greatly exaggerated how much warming additional CO2 can cause. Faced with this embarrassment, those promoting alarm have shifted their drumbeat from warming to weather extremes, to enable anything unusual that happens in our chaotic climate to be ascribed to CO2,” the Op-Ed article states.
Why then does the call for action against global warming persist? The scientists say: Follow the money. (Z: and Al Gore and his money)
“Alarmism over climate is of great benefit to many, providing government funding for academic research and a reason for government bureaucracies to grow,” they declare.
“Alarmism also offers an excuse for governments to raise taxes, taxpayer-funded subsidies for businesses that understand how to work the political system, and a lure for big donations to charitable foundations promising to save the planet.”
They conclude: “Speaking for many scientists and engineers who have looked carefully and independently at the science of climate, we have a message to any candidate for public office: There is no compelling scientific argument for drastic action to ‘decarbonize’ the world's economy.
“Every candidate should support rational measures to protect and improve our environment, but it makes no sense at all to back expensive programs that divert resources from real needs and are based on alarming but untenable claims of ‘incontrovertible’ evidence.”(Z's biggest reason for posting on this subject fairly often)

Other scientists who signed the editorial include aerospace engineer Burt Rutan, designer of Voyager and SpaceShipOne; Harrison H. Schmitt, Apollo 17 astronaut and former U.S. senator; Michael Kelly, professor of technology at the University of Cambridge; and Jan Breslow, head of the Laboratory of Biochemical Genetics and Metabolism at Rockefeller University.
P.S.: Temperatures in some areas in Europe on Thursday sank to minus 26.5 F. Parts of the Black Sea froze near the Romanian coastline and rare snow fell on Croatian islands in the Adriatic Sea.

Z:  Think they're all NUTS?

"Silence!The science is settled!"

is a very unscientific pronouncement.

One positive outcome of the the global downturn is the death of trillion-dollar pie in the sky climate change schemes.

Fredd said...

ENOUGH! The debate is over. Just start sending up millions of $100 bills into the atmosphere via sky rockets, allow them to burst into the clouds, causing rain to cool off our planet's fever.

Just do it, trust me, since the science is settled.

The "science" is NEVER settled. If it were, it would cease to being "science" and commence becoming "dogma".

Wow, 16. Imagine that, 16, including Richard "Gadfly" Lindzen and the debate is over.

Another right wing brainstorm.

Z said...

SF and Fredd...."silence!" seems to be quickly becoming the cry of the left to anybody who doesn't agree with them.

Speedy, if it's not dogma now, we don't know dogma, right?

Ducky, gives someone who he disagrees with a silly nickname and the man's a liar :-)

Ducky's here said...

No, z, the man has a scientific opinion that is in conflict with many others.

It is the right that often abandons research, latches on to something they agree with even without requisite knowledge and calls it over.

It is significant that his is the name ALWAYS mentioned, hence gadfly. You mention common sense. Common sense says consider this carefully and present the evidence.

Of course in America both sides want to pay "got a hunch, bet a bunch".

Silver and Farmer seem to get it.

I am willing to bet my life that a good chunk of these Scientists know that there global warming was temporary and natural, but they either need money or want part of the power that the necessary changes would give them.

The left is only interested in the redistribution of money which is the main reason for Global Warming and they they say things like "It is the right that often abandons research" to make themselves feel superior .
Also the scientists that do not go along with it do not get any more federal money if they don't tow the Global Warming Line.
If the left is all about science you have to wonder why they don't know about weather trends dating back hundreds of years.
Right now Obama is back dooring Cap and Trade by giving more power to the EPA. I guess everyone is fine with 4.00 per gallon for gas which 15% federal tax is included in the mix? Yet when it was a measly 1.79 we heard this

Isn't it ironic that that scientist Professor Al Gore is all invested in Cap and Trade.
you now the best way to control people is through healthcare and since they are so high and mighty they think they can control the temperature of the planet too .

And when 900 scientists expressed their misgivings you deny it too duhkkky. The polar bear deal was a hoax, the scientist was fired and being investigated and the guys in England have been outed through emails and recent headlines suggesting the evidence points now to a new Ice Age. Nobody believes your shills for redistribution duhkky. Our feelings for you are the same, you're both full of shit.

SOrry, everybody; Ducky seems to know much better than you all, than all the science agreeing with this post, etc.
:-)

But, seriously, you're all correct; this is about power. And it's also an inability for leftwingers to read clearly and digest that the ridiculous extreme they purport from the right doesn't exist. THey take "It's not what the Gores of the world think" and handily and dishonestly substitute that with "there's absolutely no climate change, the left's all a bunch of marxist rubes" Seems to be self serving, not America-serving, doesn't it.$$$

Hard to fight...the left's more clever and cunning than we are...always has been.

Yes and we went through a thousand years of dogma and abandoned it and became "enlightened".

Now we have 7th century dimwits and savages repeating it...except when it comes to nuclear weapons and the sciences involved.....then the mullahs embrace it. But forbid music, TV, women's rights...and on and on.

Yes...from time immemorial...evil still manages to find a nest in men's hearts and deeds. Evil is hard to resist when it promises so many rewards.

And the fight against it will continue...right up to the final conflict.

My biggest issue with GW is this notion that the science is settled.

Science is never settled. This is a misconception (read lie).

At one time we knew the Earth was flat. Life was born spontaneously. The left showed any signs of intelligence. These "facts" have all been debunked with science. (Okay the last one was debunked with pure common sense).

There is never proof in science, just validation of theory.

Validation of theory takes reliable and valid data and the ability for others to reproduce the results.

Z said...

Chuck "The left showed any signs of intelligence. These "facts" have all been debunked with science. (Okay the last one was debunked with pure common sense)." good one

As for SCIENCE....I think the inability of the GW nuts to understand that really erudite experts think differently than they do shows a temperament that's a little scary. Without their stopping the hubris of "they know better no matter WHAT" on this subject (or any subject), we'll get NOWHERE and that is exactly what this post's article explains.

Would that they'd READ and learn.

Man Made global warming is BS.
The Earth is a self correcting system.

Have you seen this George Carlin Bit on Saving the Planet?

It's one of his best. Language Within.

Ticker said...

But, but, but the Left Rev.Algored says it's so and remember he's hustling the carbon credit chips so you know he's gotta know more than the rest of us poor folks who can only read and think for ourselves.

He couldn't even be original and had to steal the idea of carbon credits from Sir Nicholas Stern.

But you know, it does beat the idea the hustlers came up with during the so called coming of the new ice age in the 70's. The hustled or tried to hustle coal dust or ash of all things. Talk about dumb! Oh but then the same dummies are the ones pushing Global Warming. They never give up trying to hustle us do they?

Z said...

Kid, cool...I'll look at the Carlin bit later (pray for me, I'm giving an award tonight at big gathering!)

Ticker (you pray, too, please :))
Lord Monckton was in, thick as thieves with Gore on the manmade warming stuff and has completely changed his mind on it...does the Left give HIM any credence? as IF

No money in denying it, huh?

See ya'll later.xx

I'd like to add here...........

Folks, realize that 99.9999999 % of All published 'science' through the ages has been chucked into the trash can.

Thanks for posting that. Screw all the candidates for POTUS...especially Obummer... bring back Carlin or at least his common sense...OOOOOOOrah.

Thanks...I was LMAO cause he's spot on.

IMP, I LOVE that vid. Certainly the first 3/4's of it. The last bit is debatable. :-)

I think he put some serious thought and rehearsal into that one.

As well as all those species we're killing people and their jobs to "protect". Look at the Imperial Valley in CA...now...a damn dust bowl like in the 30's. These aaswipes think their food comes from a bin at Whole Foods or the Fresh Market.

Z...everything debatable....the core of his rant was...true.

We are silly in thinking we can make a damn bit of difference in the direction that the planet takes.

It's hubris....that's all. Especially when we're nothing but fodder and meat for any other species that can out run us.

Ooops....sorry ...that was for KID

Imp...that's okay!

Carlin's bit is not quite the argument we all use but makes sense, good sense, nevertheless.

Oh, people! Global warming is so "yesterday". It's climate change, now.

But, harken ye, and bear witness to the truth. Global warming was always real, but never a big deal. There is not, and never was, any empirical science to support catastrophic climate change. A little warming is inevitable, but the Al Gore extremes are political constructs.

The Greenies don't want the facts to get in the way of their global warming hysteria propaganda. It is good news to hear that more scientists are listening to the facts, doing the resaerch, and seeing that the data doesn't fit the narrative global alarmist portray.

Liberalmann said...

Yeah, the left made up Climate Change so 'algore' can get richer. Geez, deniers are among the dumbest people in this country.

Every other civil zed country has accepted this. We are the goobers of the world thanks to wingnuts.

EVERY reputable scientist agrees it is real. The ones who disagreed have mostly been found to been paid off by big polluters.

NASA just last week released a report: "A new NASA study underscores the fact that greenhouse gases generated by human activity — not changes in solar activity — are the primary force driving global warming.

STILL DON'T BELIEVE?

Try this:

Write a letter professing your ignorance to your descendants. Put it in a safe place like your family Bible. I'm betting your great grandchildren will think of you are the family idiot.

So you tell me LD, which scientists am I to believe and why? Is consensus the only pre-requisite to placing 'my faith' in one scientist over another? Skepticism is an inherent part of any intellectual endeavor.

Well, you can start with NASA Scientists Elmo. Duh.

NASA just last week released a report: "A new NASA study underscores the fact that greenhouse gases generated by human activity — not changes in solar activity — are the primary force driving global warming.

elmers brother said...

What makes NASA so special? Didn't know you worshipped at Cape Canaveral? Did you read the links? Other scientists feeling duped and stunned by the lack of evidence? They were true believers. You haven't proselytized any one Liberal (aka the Jimmy Swaggart of Global Warming) Dude.

elmers brother said...

Have you done a formal source evaluation LD?

Didn't think so. The hubris inherent in the liberal mindset is amazing. Simply turn the baloney detector off because an 'expert' said it. No wonder you're the tyrranical sort Liberal Dude.

It hasn't gotten any warmer on this planet in almost 14 years, despite continued increases in CO2 emissions. Established climate science has to come up with an answer to that.

elmers brother said...

It's called tyrrany of the experts and to counter that I was taught to be humble yet skeptical.

I suggest a little more humility and a lot more skepticism.

elmers brother said...

I mean seriously are you really that easy to be led around by the nose?

MathewK said...

The “most inconvenient” fact cited by the scientists is the lack of global warming over the past 10 years.

In some circles it hasn't warmed in 15 years, meanwhile human activity has only increased.

But coming back to the topic, i haven't heard of this group, it's funny how hard it is for climate skeptics to get any media attention when we're led to believe the media is totally unbiased.

MichaelBard said...

Every thing is a two side one is the Good and Bad. We can see that world can be amazing developing and find a more thing which is unbelievable but it also leave up more then side effect like a global worming. It's really affected of the climate.
