Well, she’s at it again. Our First Lady Michelle Obama is once again doing what she does best. This time she’ll be going to China and will be accompanied by her children and her mother and God only knows who else., But here ‘s the clincher! She won't be accompanied by the press. Yes folks our Dear First Moocher is BANNING the free press.
Hers my take on this...First of all, she shouldn't be going to China in the first place, why are we spending so much of the Tax-payers dollars in a Commie country!
Secondly, Since when does this country BAN the press form going along on a trip with the First Lady?
And Thirdly how long will it take before the Libs start to tell us that George Buish did it as well? LMAO! Hypocritical to say the least..
Here’s the story.
"Michelle Obama’s trip to China starting on Wednesday will be nonpolitical, the White House says, a 'people-to-people exchange' emphasizing the importance that both nations place on education. As if to underscore the point, no reporters are traveling with the first lady, and she does not plan to give interviews while there," reports the New York Times.

The White House is defending the first lady bringing her family along for the ride by saying it's what the Chinese would want. "Tina Tchen, Mrs. Obama’s chief of staff and a first-generation Chinese-American, said a multigenerational visit would be appreciated by the Chinese, who value tradition," says the Times.

But in America, the trip is not without controversy. "Mrs. Obama is drawing scrutiny for her decision to travel with her mother and her two daughters, who are on spring break, bringing to mind a vacation she took to Spain in 2010 with her daughter Sasha and some friends. She and her entourage paid for their lodging and entertainment. But the security cost taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars, and the trip was criticized as lavish.,"
"Some conservative commentators are calling the China trip a junket. The White House will not say how much it will cost."

The Vacation Queen strikes again.
No press allowed! But of course,it's a necessary move so that now there's no way she can be criticized.

What an idiot I am. I thought that I was in America!

Z - I'm glad you brought the subject up. I think it is terrible that athletic coaches are so highly paid. And teachers receive such low salaries. Sports are overrated. Coaches don't deserve such high salaries.

Bob said...

Hey, people! What's wrong with a football coach making a lot of money? The hypocrisy is not that we pay the occasional coach big money, but that we don't pay the college players!

I don't believe that there are that may coaches making big money outside of professional sports. Maybe there are a half-dozen on average in each state, but that is not a lot of people.

Dave Miller said...

I certainly would not argue that coaches are making a ton of money personally. But those coaches, and the teams they coach, bring in a boatload of cash for the colleges.

For many colleges, the elimination of either basketball or football, would have disastrous results on a colleges ability to offer any kind of sports activity as most are what is known as non-revenue producing sports.

I'm not making a call one way or the other, just bringing to light why a college might desire to pay such high salaries.

Silverfiddle said...

Before the Marxist Merganser flaps in quacking and crapping all over everything, we must accept that coaches make that much money because that is what the market decided what they were worth.

College sports is big business. My only objection is that is is money coming out of my state's budget.

Ducky's here said...

Sure thing, Silverfiddle, when the market speaks it is the source of all wisdom.

The market can do no wrong and you can't see any cracks in the foundation of your system.

Not in My name said...

Too hate Silver. The Marxist has already flapped his chops, see post abode yours Silver .

Sam Huntington said...

First, I agree with Silverfiddle’s observation at 7:11 AM. The “market” decided that coaches are worth so much precisely because people value what they do. Compare that with the pay for teachers, which is significantly lower. This tells us that not only do people value coaches, they value them considerably more than they do teachers.

We must wonder, even if only casually, why do public high schools spend so much of our money on athletic programs that actually only benefit a small percentage of the students on campus. This, at a time when our high school graduates are unqualified for even the minimum wage. Why is this okay with most Americans?

Silverfiddle said...

Ducky: Burn those strawmen!

The market is not the source of all wisdom, and it certainly can 'do wrong.'

What free market thinker has ever made such absurd claims? Name names!

Certainly not Sowell, Friedman, Hayek, or Mises, so I don't know where you're getting these preposterous notions.

Been rolling up your Nation magazines and smoking them again?

The reason we hold up free markets as superior to all other is that they are the most accurate reflection of people's wishes, estimations and values.

So, if people value idiotic things, the market will reflect that.

A system that gives people what they want. Imagine that.

Of course this is inimical to progressivism, which strains mightily to serve the proletariat overpriced arugula and cold liver when we want hamburgers.

Can't have people making their own decisions, can we? Especially when Marxism has such a stellar record *snicker*

AOW, that's why I published it..you're so right.

Tea Party....if Michelle isn't allowing press, she should be paying for security as well. If there's no press, she's not representing us and I have no problem with her going there are a private citizen and paying her way. But, she clearly isn't, it looks like.

Ed and Moonbat...have either of you heard about this trip to China with no press on CNN or any of the network news?

SF...all public schools, apparently.
And yes, how very sad; I'd have hoped really good teachers of true academics got higher wages, but I DO know how hard Directors of Athletics at schools work, that's for sure...organizing games, venues, refs, coaches, dealing with parents, transportation; It is NOT an easy job and I know part of this first hand.
Odd, because I'd have thought private colleges with dependence on private alumni funds would pay more so their alumni was happy their team was winning$$

Sue and Bob....I think the amount of states whose coaches make more is astounding...but I don't really take from the importance of sports. From working in a school with many sports, I see how much character it builds and learning how to set priorities (game v test studying), keeps them fit, learning sportsmanship...but my experience is in a school with Christian teachers/coaches, so probably my experience is a little better..."building men and woman of character through sports...", etc.
Still....

Sam, athletics are VERY important, more than I'd imagined before working at a school, but I do find it troubling that the disproportionate amount of coaches getting higher pay than science, math and English teachers, etc.

I still maintain that private institutions like Notre Dame, Ivy Leagues, etc., are the ones whose alumni must be pleased and I can see why THEIR athletics staffs are paid high, but public colleges? not so sure.

SILVERFIDDLE: the problem with the left so often is their limited thinking...it's "all or nothing", and life isn't like that.

It kind of translates to this "Free Market's the way to go usually, but since it isn't in all ways, it stinks and so does everyone who supports it."

or how about:

"One person got coffee spilled on her at McD's, so all McD's need to lower the temperature at which they serve their coffee."

or
"George Washington had slaves, so he's a white swine who couldn't have possibly done anything else right in light of his slaves."
Which, of course, is what they've done to a lot of American heroes (not so much to Stalin or Lenin in their Commie studies)...and, of course, they don't realize that Washington's will called for all his slaves to be set free and the demand was also that they be taught to read and write on his nickel.
"FREE MARKET ISN'T PERFECT: Let's try SOCIALISM...at least THAT's always worked!" (not).
You can't make this stuff up, can you.

Living in the South Football is not a sport it is a religion. The show Friday Night Lights was a true picture of the impact football has on a town and a State.

Football and Basketball are the only two sports that pay their way. Football, in most cases, supplies the money so other sports can exist. Are there may paying fans for girls field hockey or gymnastics.

A portion of a college coaches income comes from equipment contracts and that does not cost the school or the State. We should get past the idea that the top college players shouldn't get paid above the table. TV contracts are a huge revenue source and so much so that UT has their own network.

Few top athletes are in college to get a meaningful degree. Maybe a degree in drama so they can wait tables but not a degree that will pay a decent living.

Neither does Reuters, which IS the media so you could just imagine if Laura Bush didn't have media along!!!!!!!!!!; Instead, Reuters opens its story with "Obama, a Harvard educated lawyer..." Is she trying a case over there? Oh, wait, I think she lost her law license, didn't she.

Oh, and it makes sure it reminds America that HILlary and Laura Bush also went to China, to soften the blow; they, of course, knew media is important and had it with them.

And how ODD that the White House and Secret Service, etc., are excluding the price of the trip. Reuters mentioned that...

I believe in freedom and free market remuneration even in the cases of sports and entertainment where that our sense of proportionally goes a little odd. While it's not perfect, I do not know of a better system, for the overall economy, that's ever been tried. There are those, however, who shun reality and will always want to go to some form of "Socialism" not withstanding, however, that whenever it's been tried it's been proven to be inferior and even unworkable!

I think if you look at the numbers it's only football that's a real profit maker. Basketball much less so and only at a few of the perennial big time schools.

The chart is a little misleading since I doubt the UNH hockey coach is paid more than the hockey coaches at BC or BU but leave that as it may be.

Maybe this is what the market values. It's certainly more glamorous than academic research.

The market is always correct ... by definition. Explains a few things.

These numbers are a far cry from the impetus for this (text from the founders of Harvard engraved on the entry): 'After God had carried us safe to New England, and we had builded our houses, provided necessaries for our livelihood, reared places for God's worship and settled the civil government, one of the next things we longed for and looked after was to advance learning and perpetuate it to posterity, dreading to leave an illiterate ministry to the churches when our present ministers shall lie in the dust.' I don't think their money went for coaches salaries.

Well, the market is certainly an expression of priorities and the value people put on things - neither right nor wrong in the moral sense. But surely 'right' in the sense of correctly conveying what priorities and values the public has.

Bob said...

I continue to be amused and amazed with Ducky. The guy tells his story, and he sticks to it!

"The market is always correct ... by definition. Explains a few things."

Nobody said that, Duck. However, the market value on any commodity is accurate in that it reflects thousands and millions of transactions that reflect what people think that commodity is worth. What's so hard to understand about that?

I will give you another fact about markets. The net result of those millions and billions of market transactions are much wiser than some central control, or socialist idea of how things are supposed to work.

As I mentioned previously, there is not one centrally controlled economy that consistently makes correct decision with prices, and supply/demand.

Take Venezuela, an oil rich, socialist paradise with 56% inflation. Chavez and crowd decided to control prices of common commodities, and, now, they cannot even get the demand for toilet paper right.

By the way, just what are those cracks you see in the US economy? Just how is the market hurting people?

England's Daily Mail can say more than our media does (and usually does) and I think this is important for people to know:

"First lady Michelle Obama will not take questions from reporters or give interviews during her tour of China that begins today, and members of the press corps who usually follows the first family everywhere can't travel with her entourage.

And although she will make a few speeches with reporters in the room, it is not the official trip the White House has projected.

White House press officials haven't commented on the record about whether a reported ban on question-and-answer interviews applies equally to American journalists and international reporters.

And limited information made available to MailOnline suggests that only two out of 22 scheduled events on the trip will afford journalists a chance to do any significant reporting – including a solitary speech – but still without interviewing Mrs. Obama.

Both of those events, the White House says, will afford 'limited' space for the press."

Uncharacteristically, there will be no reporters on the plane with her and her family.

Sorry, if 'no media' wasn't clear...I never feel I need to enumerate exactly how FEW media on a blog.

Also, as I said above, if this is a private trip paid for by Mrs. Obama, security and all, I'd have NO PROBLEM with her not having media with her, but she is meeting with the president of China's wife, and making quite a few speeches.

It's not TOO much more weird and awkward than the president only picking and choosing which photographs can get near him lately, but I find this objectionable.

And I think all my regular readers understand that I am NOT a Michelle Obama basher who attacks her looks, the silly adulation she gets for her clothing, muscled arms, etc. and I delete those who do. But I have no problem letting comments stay which give us information we are not otherwise getting. I appreciate it.

I got in big trouble with a liberal woman commenter here for complimenting the beauty of Obama's older daughter about two years ago...I was being "sexist and dismissive":)

You can't make this up, folks!

Now don't forget to extend the teacher's salary out according the amount of time they actually work each year.

The equation is Salary / 9 * 12

72k a year is

72,000 ? 9 = 8000 * 12 = 96k a year.

The teachers are actually doing quite well. And let's not forget there is probably one mobster Administrator for every 3 teachers who do nothing much beside watch porn all day.

Sports? I was having a little fun above, but the bottom line there is if some family of 4 wants to pay $500-600 to go see some guys play baseball or football, that's their choice. My only real problem with professional sports is that it forces people to build infrastructure for Private businesses.

I think it's retarded personally.

To be fair, add another month for over-the-summer planning, chaperoning, grading papers, etc.

So, I compute the figures that way and get $80,000/yr. And full benefits, too.

Most private school teachers get paid about 1/2 that with few (if any) benefits; homeschool teachers and privately-contracted teachers (my case, and I'm the most expensive-by-the-hour teacher in this region) earn less than $40,000/yr. Usually way less! No benefits whatsoever -- not even paid sick leave. Homeschool and privately-contracted teachers choose to follow that path because we don't have the hassles that public school teachers do.

Here's the thing about teachers: they never believe that they are paid enough. I know that such a belief wasn't always the case. When did that belief become the norm?

Kid,
One reason that homeschool parents are so reticent to pay a contracted teacher a decent wage: the parents themselves can do a wonderful job with teaching their own children certain subjects -- particularly if parents purchase a good curriculum. Several excellent curricula are available for homeschool instruction.

Foreign language and advanced composition are the subject areas that flummox most parents. Both of those subject areas absolutely require the much-touted critical thinking skills.

I make up some of my salary deficit by offering private tutoring -- at premium rates because I'm a master teacher with over 40 years of teaching experience and training in diagnostic and prescriptive teaching. I got that training in a private school and honed the craft over a period of 19 years there. Few teachers actually know how to use diagnostic and prescriptive teaching.

Kid said...

AOW, you've got to be one in a million. Good one you for now and ever.
I'll just add this. Bosses wife is a teacher. Her friend was going for her masters in teaching about 3 yrs ago, asked if they would review her thesis. He said is was written so poorly, like as if it was written by a 5th grader, that there was no way they could critique it without destroying her, so they gave it back said it's all good. She got her masters.
Literally.

Always On Watch said...

Kid,
I've seen evidence of what you mentioned about that thesis.

Over the past few decades, composition skills have tanked -- and standardized test scores reflect that decline. It is my belief that many teachers today are incapable of teaching because they themselves have terrible learning gaps.

Some of the straight-A public school students who transfer into my 7th grade classes have never written anything more than a sentence. Not even a paragraph -- let along an entire essay! I'm holding the line of standards in the classes that I teach, but it's getting more and more difficult to hold that line.

PS: Thank you for the compliment and the blessing.

Always On Watch said...

BTW, when I was interviewed for my first teaching job -- in the public school system -- the Director of Personnel didn't want to hire me because my grades in college were "too good." He said that he'd much rather hire teachers who maintained C averages because they "would understand the students."

I retorted, "So, you hire those who don't know their subject areas well?"

The above transpired in 1973 and provides one clue as to why American education is in such a sorry state today.
