Wisconsin's uncomfortable....God can't be SEEN or READ.

Wisconsin atheists are incensed.  Have you heard about THIS?   One morning, Governor Scott Walker did his own private devotional and read "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me," from Philippians and posted it on a Tweet.  Do you find that verse "braggadocio?"   The atheists are saying that verse sounds like a 'threat.'  Do you?  Can a politician with strong beliefs use something one day which appealed to him and which he wanted to share?

Your thoughts?   And please read the link before commenting!  It really helps.  Thanks,

That was supposed to be my post for today, but about 15 minutes after I wrote it, a friend sent me the following.   Should that statue now be taken down because an atheist might find out and demand it?  And should we give in?

When all had gathered around, he reverently began to speak. (Here are his words that night.)

'My name is James Bradley and I'm from Antigo, Wisconsin . My dad is on that statue, and I wrote a book called 'Flags of Our Fathers'. It is the story of the six boys you see behind me.

'Six boys raised the flag. The first guy putting the pole in the ground is Harlon Block. Harlon was an all-state football player. He enlisted in the Marine Corps with all the senior members of his football team.. They were off to play another type of game. A game called 'War.' But it didn't turn out to be a game. Harlon, at the age of 21, died with his intestines in his hands. I don't say that to gross you out, I say that because there are people who stand in front of this statue and talk about the glory of war. You guys need to know that most of the boys in Iwo Jima were 17, 18, and 19 years old - and it was so hard that the ones who did make it home never even would talk to their families about it.

(He pointed to the statue) 'You see this next guy? That's Rene Gagnon fromNew Hampshire. If you took Rene's helmet off at the moment this photo was taken and looked in the webbing of that helmet, you would find a photograph...a photograph of his girlfriend Rene put that in there for protection because he was scared. He was 18 years old. It was just boys who won the battle of Iwo Jima . Boys. Not old men.

'The next guy here, the third guy in this tableau, was Sergeant Mike Strank. Mike is my hero. He was the hero of all these guys. They called him the 'old man' because he was so old. He was already 24. When Mike would motivate his boys in training camp, he didn't say, 'Let's go kill some Japanese' or 'Let's die for our country' He knew he was talking to little boys.. Instead he would say, 'You do what I say, and I'll get you home to your mothers.'

'The last guy on this side of the statue is Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian from Arizona . Ira Hayes was one of them who lived to walk off Iwo Jima . He went into the White House with my dad. President Truman told him, 'You're a hero' He told reporters, 'How can I feel like a hero when 250 of my buddies hit the island with me and only 27 of us walked off alive?'

So you take your class at school, 250 of you spending a year together having fun, doing everything together. Then all 250 of you hit the beach, but only 27 of your classmates walk off alive. That was Ira Hayes. He had images of horror in his mind. Ira Hayes carried the pain home with him and eventually died dead drunk, face down, drowned in a very shallow puddle, at the age of 32 (ten years after this picture was taken).

'The next guy, going around the statue, is Franklin Sousley from Hilltop, Kentucky . A fun-lovin' hillbilly boy. His best friend, who is now 70, told me, 'Yeah, you know, we took two cows up on the porch of the Hilltop General Store. Then we strung wire across the stairs so the cows couldn't get down. Then we fed them Epsom salts. Those cows crapped all night.' Yes, he was a fun-lovin' hillbilly boy. Franklin died on Iwo Jima at the age of 19. When the telegram came to tell his mother that he was dead, it went to the Hilltop General Store. A barefoot boy ran that telegram up to his mother's farm. The neighbors could hear her scream all night and into the morning. Those neighbors lived a quarter of a mile away.

'The next guy, as we continue to go around the statue, is my dad, John Bradley, from Antigo, Wisconsin , where I was raised. My dad lived until 1994, but he would never give interviews. When Walter Cronkite's producers or the New York Times would call, we were trained as little kids to say 'No, I'm sorry, sir, my dad's not here. He is in Canada fishing. No, there is no phone there, sir. No, we don't know when he is coming back.' My dad never fished or even went to Canada . Usually, he was sitting there right at the table eating his Campbell 's soup. But we had to tell the press that he was out fishing. He didn't want to talk to the press.

'You see, like Ira Hayes, my dad didn't see himself as a hero. Everyone thinks these guys are heroes, 'cause they are in a photo and on a monument. My dad knew better. He was a medic. John Bradley from Wisconsin was a combat caregiver. On Iwo Jima he probably held over 200 boys as they died. And when boys died on Iwo Jima , they writhed and screamed, without any medication or help with the pain.

'When I was a little boy, my third grade teacher told me that my dad was a hero. When I went home and told my dad that, he looked at me and said, 'I want you always to remember that the heroes of Iwo Jima are the guys who did not come back. Did NOT come back.'

'So that's the story about six nice young boys.. Three died on Iwo Jima , and three came back as national heroes. Overall, 7,000 boys died on Iwo Jima in the worst battle in the history of the Marine Corps. My voice is giving out, so I will end here. Thank you for your time.'

Suddenly, the monument wasn't just a big old piece of metal with a flag sticking out of the top. It came to life before our eyes with the heartfelt words of a son who did indeed have a father who was a hero. Maybe not a hero for the reasons most people would believe, but a hero nonetheless.

Let us never forget from the Revolutionary War to the current War on Terrorism and all the wars in-between that sacrifice was made for our freedom...please pray for our troops.

Remember to pray praises for this great country of ours and also ...please pray for our troops still in murderous places around the world.

REMINDER: Everyday that you can wake up free, it's going to be a great day.

One thing I learned while on tour with my 8th grade students in DC that is not mentioned here is . . that if you look at the statue very closely and count the number of 'hands' raising the flag, there are 13. When the man who made the statue was asked why there were 13, he simply said the 13th hand was the hand of God.

Let's distinguish between atheists who shrug, wonder about us, and move on, and those who want to force their atheism on us, much like they think we want to shove our "religion" on them
To those who would say their are no atheists who fear us doing that, I offer the once popular movie "The Handmaid's Tale".
Their are atheists like C.I. who wish us no harm, but want to maintain that fictional "Wall of Separation", and those whose political affiliation demands them to attack us on all fronts, including our religious belief and it's expression in the public square.

How about if the Leftards quit promoting their "religion" -- or their atheism -- on their official pages?

And here's another thing: Aren't social media pages free and, therefore, not funded by the state (taxpayers)?

The United States has a lot of simple-minded people; Annie Gaylor and Dan Baker are two of them. Public officials are not required to give up their religion—nor can they even do that. It isn’t something you “give up.” It is, rather, who you are.

As for the Iwo Jima monument—I have never met anyone who served in actual combat who is an atheist. Remember, if simple-minded atheists had their way, every memorial, and every tombstone in every cemetery from coast to coast would be taken down—presumably because it offends them that other people believe something that they do not believe. Typical leftists, if you ask me. It is either their way, or the highway.

They can go to hell.

I think Gov. Walker should keep the reference on his page! Why do the Atheists try so hard to make us quit in believing in our God? They are terrified of Him!

The Iwo Jima story brought tears to my eyes. My dad was in WW II, and very rarely told us anything about it.

Thank you!

The atheists that want to impose their beliefs are just another bunch of religious extremists. IF there are no religions, what's left? the State? The great collective. Yikes.

Baysider said...

Braggadocio? Hah! It's the essence of humility. Is it a 'threat'? Well, not in the traditional way. But let me illustrate with a story.

My co-worker Jim was a reasonable man with strong political interests. A Scoop Jackson Democrat, his active mind supported democracy with vigor. But he privately commented to me that 'theoretically, if we could get the right man, what would really work best would be a benevolent dictactorship.' I agreed 'if the right man' were available and casually commented 'fortunately He is, and He plans to come back and take over eventually.' Jim exploded 'no, absolutely not! I reject that! Anything but that!'

So, dear readers, is He a threat? Apparently, in this context.

Baysider said...

Ducky might soften his comment to Sam if he lived through the LA County fight to remove a tiny, barely visible cross from the county seal. The seal had a broad collection of icons that represent the county's history. The biggest icon was a pagan goddess that riveted attention. You barely noticed the cross unless you carefully examined every element.

But the ACLU trumpeted the shopworn 'establishment clause' violation and agreeable commissars quickly ducked behind that for cover to remove the cross. Yah, the City of the Angels, founded under the cross of the Roman Catholic church. Now gone.

The joke at the time time was they would go after all san serif typefaces lest an offending cross-like 't' be seen in county documents. What's next? A new name for the Sacrament-o River? Don't be surprised!

Fred Baron said...

Doesn't surprise me. Atheists are unstable people, lashing out at those around them because they have some kind of mean daddy hangup.

Ducky's here said...

Baysider stop the straw arguments.

Removing a cross from a public building that serves non Christians, as much as you would like to deny them, is hardly equivalent to removing all tombstones from cemeteries.

Really, I know that the right has trouble suppressing their feelings and using reason but you should know a straw man when you propose one.

Z said...

Ducky...I beg your pardon, but do you honestly not see Baysider's point?
I'm wondering if anybody caught that the pagan goddess stays? WHY?

Fred, It's so curious that they simply can't look away...some say they get headaches and dyspepsia looking at the cross that the workmen wanted up at the 911 site....the metal rebar that formed a cross and gave solace to so many of the recovery workers those first days after the attacks. I suppose the atheists are none too happy that small, very old church remained standing in spite of the fact that huge buildings came down all around it. Yes, it makes them ILL :-)

When we're all this uptight about anything that's been around for years and didn't seem to worry anybody or cause any kind of establishment clause problems, one wonders 'why now?', how'd seeing a cross, anything about Christ, become illness-provoking? :-) WHy can't they take it! grow UP!

Candace Bure apparently told the audience of Dancing with the Stars that her life revolves around Christ and the audience went wild with applause.
Think that should have been bleeped out of the telecast?
I have met Candace and her family several times and they all walk the walk. For those who know who he is, she's Kirk Cameron's sister, by the way.

Z said...

Ed, by the way, I couldn't agree with you more about atheists who have the dignity and calm to just shrug, wonder and move on....

Rita said...

Candace is Kirk's sister? I never realized that. I did catch the part where she indicated she would not participate or dress is a too provocative fashion. She said she was a sexual being, but didn't need to display provocative images. Well it was something to that effect. I was impressed with her resolution.

Z said...

Hi Rita...yes she is.
Her daughter Natasha is a sweetie pie....And Candice is quite nice... her husband is VERY CUTE :-) Very Nordic looking...Russian.

And yes, she's Kirk's sister!

I thought the way she handled it was SO GREAT because people need to understand that because a woman wants to hold on to some decorum and dress beautifully but not sexually doesn't mean she isn't sexual and doesn't enjoy sex with her husband. Ya, I agree with you....she didn't take the creepy "I'd never DO THAT!" road...she's a real person who happens to have faith and lives by it...and lives fully!
Imagine the place exploding with applause when she said she's a Christian? Holy smoke.

I guess atheists will regard her as subversive and VERY dangerous now :-)

Ducky's here said...

Well, z, they are still fighting like children over the seal.
I believe that the pagan goddess of agriculture was removed along with the cross in favor of a generic native American figure.

I can see this is clearly the first step towards removing all religious icons from cemeteries, right?

This idea that Christians are discriminated against in America has barely a germ of truth and is really quite ludicrous.

Mustang said...

Ducky can deny the facts all he wants, but it doesn’t change them. Fact: atheists are demanding that a memorial cross be removed from a military installation. I’m thinking that maybe ducky should keep quiet if he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. It is, at least, the surest way to avoid looking like a complete idiot. Now, if these people can demand removal of crosses from military bases, what is to keep them from making similar demands at national cemeteries, which are also government property? Or even the removal of chapels form military bases. Or even doing away with military chaplains ...

Z said...

Mustang, HOW many stories have I done about people anxious to rid America of anything that smacks of Christianity? 50? 70?

After that, it should be hard for any thinking human being to bury one's head in the sand unless one really NEEDS to.

for some reason.

I still can't understand why things that haven't scared people for 250 years are suddenly so unacceptable?
It's almost like secular society's done this TO get Christians to speak out....and then they turn the Christians into nutty zealots. Sort of Alinksy-esque.

Removing signs of religion in a military cemetery is total disrespect for the men and women who fell. If a soldier is an atheist then he can have a tomb that shows no sign of religion. It was beautiful to see tombs with the cross or thew Jewish star at Omaha Beach.

How complicated is that?

I am always interested in whatever self-created people have to say. Self-created is the way I think of atheists. To my limited way of thinking, there are only three ways for creation to happen.

1. We have been created by God.
2. We have created ourselves.
3. Our creation came about through a gigantic random interaction of quarks, bosons, and an infinity of other quantum particles.

Now, I don't believe in random, and I doubt if most people do. After all, we live in a causal world, i.e., there is a cause for every effect.

Those who criticize Governor Walker are most likely of the self-created sort, or people who haven't made it to the critical thinking stage.

If there are any atheists reading this blog, I would love to hear their version of creation, or some version of random chemicals, water, and lightning that fits their vision of The Beginning.

Maybe they believe in space aliens...

Bob, surely you've heard of the Big Bang.

But that's not the issue. The question of how we determine God's nature is very much alive.
You can believe it is revealed and I wouldn't argue with you.
Clearly it has been revealed in a number of manifestations.

As for man creating himself?
Are you referring to creating his own meaning?
Try Buddha or Christ or the Tao or Sartre. But don't try to tell people you have a definitive answer.

So that we are all connected to each other biologically, to the earth chemically and to the rest of the universe atomically. That’s kinda cool! That makes me smile and I actually feel quite large at the end of that. It’s not that we are better than the universe, we are part of the universe. We are in the universe and the universe is in us.”

D: I believe I understand what you are saying. However, I believe the question is much more basic, i.e., not so much God's nature, but does He physically exist.

" You can believe it is revealed and I wouldn't argue with you.
Clearly it has been revealed in a number of manifestations."

I'm not sure what you mean, but I may differ on this point.

"As for man creating himself?
Are you referring to creating his own meaning?"

No. Physical creation. How did that happen?

"Try Buddha or Christ or the Tao or Sartre. But don't try to tell people you have a definitive answer."

Yes. I have a definitive answer, and I don't have to sever heads, nor do I have to threaten others' rights to talk about it.

I am not sure where you come down on the God thing. Perhaps you are a pantheist, i.e., God is in everything.

Those of us who are working have at least a silly idea that our efforts will result in a better life in the future. For many it most certainly will. And true happiness only comes from hard work and accomplishment.

The welfare people are denied that and I think they realize that too. But they're too weak, so they sit around and bitch instead.

THAT is a Google search of headstones from all over. Notice what they generally have in common: a creepy little reminder of religion that a very few want to see banished from public sight.

Ergo, Sam's comment about the potential for a demand to take down headstones. Not far fetched at all. Remember why the Israeli's moved their people lock, stock and cemetery out of Gaza before the Palestinians could desecrate their graves? Graves are a historic target and could/will be again.

As for the LA County seal: when they removed the cross because of the lawsuit specifically complaining about the cross, they made a few other changes. The goddess Pomona morphed into a native woman and the oil derrick went. None of these were because of the lawsuit - only the cross. The lawsuit targeted the Christian foundation of the town. Period.

Rita, check this paragraph from a Yahoo article on what we discussed earlier

"One of the story lines bubbling just below the surface of Dancing With the Stars with this season is whether or not we'll see Candace Cameron-Bure flash the polarizing brand of Christianity her brother adheres to. We got a taste of it last night."

"The POLARIZING BRAND!?" I think that's code for "THE ONE THAT GETS MENTIONED OUT LOUD?" HAA
