Check out our pal and fellow blogger Rita's excellent blog HERE....She's got two videos show Mike Rowe of Discovery Channel's 'Dirty Jobs' talking about JOBS IN AMERICA....I couldn't agree more with him and truly believe you'll want to at least listen to the top video she's highlighted.
He is SO RIGHT...and you'll be so troubled by some of his facts...I nominate him JOBS CZAR :-) At least HE wouldn't be sending American jobs overseas like the one we have is!

There's a shortage of students enrolled in vocational schools (or just a shortage of voke schools).
Not a new issue.
"new issue?" What's the newness have to do with it?
This is a HUGE issue that's not being addressed. And, if addressed, could get us far...
It's time Americans realize that a college education isn't the 'be all and end all'...
I just hope the Senators were listening...though it always worries me when they have to go to celeb-types for information.
SHovel ready...was a joke, is a joke, in more ways than one, apparently :-(
It's new issue to this generation. There didn't used to be such a huge stigma attached to working a blue collar job like there is today. My dad was a mechanic, my husband and both brothers are/were appliance technicians. They all worked hard and made a decent living but now everyone acts as if our youth has failed if they don't go to some university and get a worthless degree. Then they come out indoctrinated believing in a bunch of socialist crap and whine they deserve better pay. You might look down on guys like my dad and my husband Ducky, but I would bet everything I own they were better men than you are.
Z,
I firmly believe that trades have been stigmatized because of the crazy idea that you can't be a contributing member of society unless you have a college degree. I'm sure all those degrees in Ancient Art studies and the like are helping people get hired.
I tell my students that the trades are an honorable and BTW, a lucrative way to make a living. Many trade workers make more than I do with a Master's. In our state many well-paying jobs go unfilled because workers don't have the skills needed.
I attribute that to those who look upon a college degree as some sort of validation. Most college degrees are not worth the paper they're written on. We need trade workers, period.
Our conselors are right in line with the elitists in saying that you need college to succeed. Outright false.
Obama's going after all those vocational schools are you kidding me?
65 percent of jobs require vocational training only 20 percent require a degree according to the department of labor.
sorry Z...7 out of 10 high schoolers go right to work after high school
yet educators like high school counselors are evaluated by the number of kids they get enrolled in college...oolleges get unhindered access to classrooms while vocational schools and the military recruiters must stay in the career centers
from the NYT:
The administration has proposed a 20 percent reduction in its fiscal 2012 budget for career and technical education, to a little more than $1 billion, even as it seeks to increase overall education funding by 11 percent. The only real alternative to public schools for career training is profit-making colleges and trade schools, many of which have been harshly criticized for sending students deeply into debt without improving their job prospects. A little more than one in 10 students in higher education attend a profit-making institution.
Does a state college offering these degrees improve someone's chances of finding a job while at the same time putting the student deep in debt? (up 21% in the last 3 years)
Mr. Rowe is correct. How did we get here? For the past sixty years, progressive educators have been telling their public school students that the only true path to a happy life and steady income is college. This is amazing when you consider that the parents of these morons were blue-collar workers, whose labors sent their miscreant, snobby, elitist children to college so that they could in turn help to destroy America.
Mr. Rowe asks us to picture a plumber, and he’s right about that, too. Part of the problem is that our society no longer respects anyone engaged in tradecraft, but part of the problem is also that our plumbers actually mirror the perceptions that most of us have. Here’s a good example: picture an auto mechanic. Do you know what this same person looks like in Germany? He looks like a doctor. He wears a white lab coat, he’s clean, and he speaks with the benefit of an education. He takes pride in his work. He is a professional. He earns more income than a lawyer.
Rowe is right about this, too: as a country, we are so screwed. Don’t worry though; we did it to ourselves.
I think Rita has a crush on Mike Rowe. haha
Rita, BRAVO, girl....but this time I think Ducky was only saying there's a shortage, not that he thinks that's a good thing...unless I'm reading him wrong?
I don't think the newness is relevant...the new thing is that America's got jobs and too many dunces and not enough trained workers...horrible!
Law and Order, I couldn't agree with you or Rita more. I guess the left feels they can't indoctrinate if they don't get enough kids in college?
Elbro...whether they go straight to work is one thing, it's the training that they're losing out on...from college OR vocational schools. I don't think it's great to go from high school to a job; that's usually a dead end. I think vocational training would be a fabulous way to get our economy going again, particularly when we hear there are jobs and WE can't fill them?, right?
Sam....we need to fix this, but HOW? particularly if the jerk Obama is taking money out of something like THIS!
CnC...I do, too, trust me :-) WHO WOULDN'T?! !!!
I agree! I've encouraged all my children to go to vocational school and then go to college.
I can sure believe that. Everyone should go to college and get 80k a year white collar jobs.
So, obama is beating on Romney base don his BAIN work. Romney should create and ad that says "I was going to criticize mr obama on his working life but he doesn't have one ! Never worked anywhere!"
heh
Romney is hitting back on the outsourcing thing. he should put that several seconds in this clip around the 1:05 mark where the CEO of GM is stating that "7 out of 10 of our vehicles were made outside of the United States" That would turn some heads eh?
Well, hundreds of CEO's have testified that they are not hiring due to 1) oblamycare and 2) uncertainty about taxes and regulation. There is also the lack of demand. Lack of demand from a consumer base that has 23% unemployment and lost equity in their homes.
According to counting rules that were in place in 1993, that clinton eliminated in 1994, the unemployment rate is 23%. Reference: SGS alternate unemployment rate.
The highest unemployment rate during the Great Depression was 25%.
How much of a loser do you have to be to be a democrat supporter?
They're waiting for libdude over here. Hurry libtard! Hurry!
heheh
You're stil a loser
Liberalmann....I have the finest people on my blog ...
And I don't put up with people calling others names here.
GO.
Libboy, you are a shining example of today's entitled ignorant youth and prove that Rowe is correct. And you are so ignorant to believe a Democrat like Rowe might actually see the value of hard work so he must be a Conservative.
I can't wait until your toilet overflows with all of the crap you possess and then some lowly plumber tells you he's too busy to help and even then you'll be too ignorant to realize that he's smarter than you will ever be.
Go learn something useful and quit wasting the good people here's time.
Nobody cares what any of you think. We're in charge get used to it.
And you care so little about what we think that you come here and display your stupidity. What are you, 12?
what are you gonna do about it? cry like a little girl?
Why would I do that when a little sissy like you have cornered the market on crying like a girl? Have at it sissy girl, you're not worth wasting my time or the air you breathe.
Today's headline:
LIBERALMAN REVEALS HIMSELF AS A SISSY BOY.
cnc, Let's have a pool, or several for that matter.
I'll take libgirl's nose in oblabbers rectum for 1000 Alex!
Or how about when oblabber loses the election in the biggest landslide in history, libgirl never posts here again. spends his time in his basement lair crying on the hour at the daily kooks or the du site.
Speaking of which, why is the site called democrat underground? did they not get the memo that the losers won in 08? hahah
You can't beat libtards for paradoxical comedy. hahaha
Pierce College here in the SF Valley- has an excellent vocational section- welding-et. al.-
I encourage all to check it out!
I am tempted to take the welding- only to use it for my sculpture ..Off-0pring says - that - with my many old riding injuries- I should be careful - as welding requires =-'full strength' to even lift and hold the 'parts'--
We'll see-
: - )
It would be fun though!
Carol-CS
Liberalmann, you are DEFINITELY in charge. You indoctrinate your kids, you've overtaken the media and we can only thank GOD that Limbaugh was able to break through all of that and pave the way for FOX, etc. IMagine if NOBODY knew both sides? YIKES!
Ya, we know you're winning (the country will lose, but enjoy)....we have idiots who don't know the finish of "Give me liberty or give me.." and they vote....thanks to liberal teachers. YOU probably don't, come to think of it?
Funny, I hate to be mean to anybody, even you, and I read your calling my readers morons and being as nasty as you were last time as 'bp'....
then you start commenting like a normal person and beg off that it was because you need your pills....
and you call us 'losers'? WOW
Carol, I went to Pierce for 2 years...then transferred to Woodbury.
Yes, they do have some vocational stuff, do they still have the agriculture classes? They kind of specialized in that, but the left has closed even California's Central Valley, so I'm thinking there isn't much use for farmers in California anymore
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/politically-vulnerable-democrats-plan-back-obamacare-repeal-191746511.html
Wow, a few House Dems facing reelection are voting for repeal of ObamaScare...looks like rats deserting a sinking ship.
I hope so.

Someone is using my name. Obviously it's one of your regulars trying to get me booted.
Click on my name an you will see the date January 2012 as when I joined. The imposter's says July 2012. It's one of your own sabotaging your blog to childishly try to get me banned.
Who cares, when has any version of libgirl said anything intelligent?
Cue the Twilight Zone music.
Libdude I've done the homework. Despite the discrepancy both profiles share the same IP. You can protest all you want. Z and I both know you're the same person. Z has been more than hospitable to you, patient despite the jerk you've been and now you're treating her like this? I thought liberals were jerks but you take the cake dude.
If she wanted she could just delete you, but she's been more patient than I would have been.
for goodness sake, Libjerk, all I have to do is go on comment moderation and POOF!, you're gone :-) BY the way, comment moderation is how I learned you were the old 'bd' back.
You came back with a different name (remember, you posted the same comment twice only one was from bd, so you can't deny that's you) and now you expect me to believe an error on a date with the same IP isn't you?
I understand anybody'd who want to get rid of you...you're nasty, ugly and ridiculously close-minded, but you're pulling something now and I don't know what it is, but STOP it.
thanks.
And CnC says he thinks I have a crush on Mike Rowe. Duh. I don't know of one heterosexual female who doesn't. And there's probably a good deal of gay men that do too.
Heck, if I asked my husband HE'D probably tell me he has a crush on him too.
Elbro, thanks.
As I said, it's kind of funny.....remember, this is a guy who can watch a VIDEO of his hero lying and deny Obama said it :-)
I can delete and I can go on Comment Mod. again...NO PROBLEM.
What he's pulling now with this new lie "that's not ME!" is just plain WEIRD.
Here was my response to your brother in a comment above, Rita:
"CnC...I do, too, trust me :-) WHO WOULDN'T?! !!!"
geeez!
Imp :-)
But, let's not make this about Libjerk....the video's important...
and saving AMerica is important......we don't have time for people like this.
I'm SO DONE with people who can watch CNN and say FOX is biased, for example, like Lib does! But, I have to admit CNN is starting to catch up and they're actually having some conservatives on now...about 3 a day verses FOX's 20 libs, but it's a start.
COnservatives know we have to know ALL sides of subjects to make informed decisions; it seems to be one of the bigger differences between them and us.
You're right Liberlamann, Z will tolerate duhkkky and not you. ((Roll eyes)) end sarcasm
"In a time of financial uncertainty, it seems illogical to cut funding for technical and vocational schools, which teach students concrete, practical skills. But that’s precisely what the Obama administration aims to do, according to a recent article in the New York Times. In an effort to channel more money toward improving students’ mastery of broad subjects math, reading and history, the administration has proposed a 20 percent reduction in funding for career and technical funding, even as it seeks to raise the amount of funding devoted to education overall. This, according to White House officials, will help students better prepare for four-year colleges, and keep minority and low-income students from being automatically funneled into vocational training."
That's an excerpt from an article which was published exactly one year ago, and explains a lot.

Rita, Thanks for posting the videos on your blog. Thanks to Z, too.
Rowe is right. For the last couple of years I have been taking classes at a local tech college in Marietta, GA. The State of Georgia has a very good tech college system, and it is one of the very best educational deals around for lots of people.
I have completed the web development curricula, and there are programs in auto mechanics, HVAC, firefighting, criminal justice, truck driving, IT, business technology, and several other technical and semi-technical areas.
When I first started classes, I wondered where all the white kids were. There are lots of black and Hispanic kids on campus, and it felt like the white kids were under represented. I could easily be wrong, but that's what it seemed.
So, why aren't the kids that work in fast food joints going tech college? There are scads of opportunities for kids to learn good skills at a fairly low cost. I don't think the high school system is doing a good job. Not everyone needs a four degree in sociology or sports marketing.
I am sure that other states have similar resources. We just don't have kids taking advantage of them.
