I need a BREAK FROM POLITICS: These are a few of my favorite things...absolutely not in order of preference...........I tried to break it down a little...favorite TV show, favorite thing to do, favorite flower, favorite books, favorite scenery, etc........so...Frasier, eating out, Black/white films, The Holy Bible, blue hydrangeas, the ocean (photo compliments of Mr. Z), Schubert's Trout, The Band, pasta with white truffles, macaroni and cheese, a Martha Grimes mystery, and a martini with an olive. I'm leaving a picture of a great burger off because I'm tired of looking for images and you know what one looks like :-) Paris and Munich... I could go on and on but there isn't space here so I picked things that came immediately to my mind and that I REALLY love..........it kind of makes me happy just scrolling down my images!
These are hard times, it's fun to share positive, happy things; What are some of YOUR FAVORITE THINGS?

Index to the music of Richard Wayne Dirksen
My absolute favorite is THIS ONE. I was lucky enough to sing under his baton one summer at the National Cathedral. I was in my teens (He normally didn't admit teens to his choirs, but did so for me upon the recommendation of Norman Scribner, director of the Choral Arts Society). At the time, I didn't know the significance of Wayne's place in the choral and composing community.

Hmmm, that's interesting, AOW. Another vote for the wild raspberry.
I can't put my finger on it might be a mixture of sweet and tart that does it.
Benson's, a fave local spot, charges $1.00 a scoop extra for it and there are plenty of takers.
Wow, what a hard survey! It's hard to pinpoint a favorite thing when so many simple pleasures are so very good.
Right now, I'd have to go with my husband, my children, faith, and fresh, handmade guacamole. It's the best thing in hot weather.
I purposefully left people out of my list but I'm enjoying reading the inclusions here! Maybe because my very favorite person's not with us anymore.
Ed...that is so touching :-)
I'll come back and make some comments later. This is fun, thanks SO MUCH for participating, everybody!
I hope we get a lot more, even shorter lists are welcome! But, the more the merrier.
Good choices - Z.
I've never known that you liked martinis. I've given them up - but there was a time they were high
(no pun intended :])on my list.
Big olives stuffed with blue cheese didn't hurt either.
Z said...
Sue, I don't drink them often (enough) but I do like them...I love big olives stuffed with an almond. I like the texture change.
I'm mostly a red wine drinker.
In the summer, I like a 7 and 7...but with very little Bourbon...it's refreshing and delicious and reminds me of my grandfather who'd give me a tiny sip of his when I was growing up.....I adore the scent of bourbon in 7up. :-)

For those of you have taken the time, thanks, these are fun to read.
Ducky, I'm surprised at Folk Music.
AOW...I know the dialogue of every I LOVE LUCY and still enjoy watching them..good choice!

The train in the countryside...lovely.
A favorite song I love to sing is I TOOK A TRIP ON A TRAIN...reminds me of that.
Elbro..I put Bonhoeffer aside and got into other books, sad to say. I MUST get back into that.
I hope you've listened to RIENZI, there is one aria in there I could listen to ALL DAY LONG, I swear.
I watched some of the Gershwin Story last night and loved it when the old piano teacher was telling George about having known Brahms and then points to a bust of Wagner and mentions RIENZI, while a swell of that aria rose in the score of the film........so good.
Brooke, thanks for those. You said something profound...we who recognize so many simple pleasures are truly blessed!
Sue, how about other faves?
Mark, come ON! :-)
Give us YOURS!!!
Ducky, I'm surprised at Folk Music.
----
And I have a 1917 Fairbanks banjo to prove it.
Just kidding. I like BBQ, American History, Going to museums, Football, girl watching, photo-realism art, all kinds of music, blogging, and many other things, mostly things that don't require much physical exertion.
Ducky....banjo isn't the first thing that comes to mind. Very interesting.
Mark, it was hard for me to focus on music because I like SO MUCH of it, too. BBQ ..perfect.
My paintings are a kind of twist on photo realism. If you like photo realism, you need to see the Cohen Brothers.

there you go......I'm nuts about his work... he works (or at least DID, it's been a while) very near me and I've been in his studio and am starting to paint again myself and am considering doing "variations on that theme"
I'll take the mac&cheese, please, and a very dry martini. Please package these to go. We are leaving for the beach, soon.
I have my own music in my Android Smart Phone. I don't do iPods, anymore.
Bob, or just vodka on the rocks with olives, which is actually what I prefer! I like red wine at home but, oddly enough, not so much in warmer weather...
enjoy the beach!
We're still fogged in here this morning in Santa Monica....very lovely weather lately, I must say.
Okay z, 5 favorite screwball comedies:
1. Bringing Up Baby
2. Easy Living
3. The Palm Beach Story
4. It Happened One Night
5. His Girl Friday
Ducky, all good comedies. I'm not a big Roz Russell fan, but she was in good films..and I did like her better as early as Girl Friday.
Of course, Cary Grant is WAY up there on my faves list.
Claudette Colbert's a favorite of mine, too.
I love Irene Dunne. And every film she was in. THE WOMEN is way up there on top of my list.
If I had to pick 'screwball comedies',
It Happened One Night
The Philadelphia Story (original)
Hobson's Choice (huge fave)
The Women
Stuff like that...if they're too 'screwball', I turn off BIG TIME.

*Ben & Jerry's Heath Bar Crunch

Yeah,z, Hobson's Choice is a neglected gem. Criterion released a very good print a while ago.
David Lean is a pretty reliable director.
Duck,
That little place that I mentioned also had delicious blackberry ice cream. And black walnut too!
Thelma's pies were to die for.
Ducky, I just typed CRITERION HOBSON'S CHOICE into my Google searcher and it led me to Amazon...I clicked BUY IT NOW and it's on its way. I am so so pleased. Thanks. I've always wanted to have that film...and it is the Criterion edition. It is an absolutely perfect little gem,
thanks very much!
AOW....PIE is probably my fave dessert...blueberry, sour cherry, pumpkin, chocolate... mmm peach...well, if I put more down, they wouldn't be me 'favorites' so I'll let it go at that.
YOu DO have Air conditioning again, right?
Hey, Duck! I'll bet that you and I could chat for days about American Folk Music.
Are you interested in the hillbilly Depression material (what I call it, anyway)? I have Mom's 78 rpm of "Hobo Bill's Last Ride."
And, yes, I have an RCA wind-up Victrola to play that 78, too. And quite a collection of other 78s.
When I was up, we had an electric 78 player. Dad's nephew worked on all kinds of such equipment and set it up for me so that I could sing along to Rosemary Clooney's "This Old House."
Well AOW, I was around Cambridge during the "great folk scare". For some reason it became a pretty strong old timey scene and I really enjoyed it.
People just making music out of a need to make music. However, if it hadn't been for some very wise collectors we might have lost a lot of it.
Still a lot of folks who just hang out here and play (some of them badly).
Z,
Yes, we have the A/C back on. We were without power less than 24 hours. I was about to fire up the generator for the Ac (Fridge and coffee pot were all that I ran) that my cousin-in-law brought over when the power came back on.
Today I went to the swimming pool -- I love to swim! Too hot! The water wasn't even refreshing.
Tomorrow and the next day will be even hotter. I'm not going to the pool for a few days.
Pie! Blueberry is my absolute favorite!
Thelma's lemon meringue pie was the best such pie I ever had -- better than anyone else's as far as I'm concerned.
Alas! Thelma passed away some years ago. I miss her so much. She was also a font of information about local history.
Duck,
My great-uncle Walter played the banjo like nobody's business. He was a picker, not a strummer. Sometimes, his brother played along on the fiddle.
They played for family and the small locale up in the hills, but never professionally.
If I hadn't had to travel today I would have watched the Gershwin movie, did catch the Glenn Miller Story. I still have not heard that aria.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wk_1_imYThw
Elbro, be patient! The lead-in is quite long....finally, you hear the amazing aria.
I tried to post one of the very famous German singers who made it a because they made it so famous, but the recordings are so old they're really not pleasant to listen to (and they're even a tad flat!)
I saw Glenn Miller last night, but only the last 30 minutes. I swear I've seen that film 20 times and still cry when June Allyson reacts to Little Brown Jug...
I have two choices: Ignore this post, or appear to be a snob? Hopefully not.
But there are simply too many favorite things to list. Maybe that could be the basis for a book someday.
I listened and it was very beautiful Z
Elbro, I heard the opera in Vienna and we had the best seats in the house because we'd been invited by an Austrian industrialist...AMAZING night. Then we went to the Sacher Hotel (home of the famous chocolate Sacher Torte), to a private little dining room for four...mahogany-lined walls, red roses, FOUR WAITERS for four of us..........what a night!
I'd not wanted to go because the opera's shortened version is over 3 hours (it's six, I believe, in its entirety) but we HAD to go because it was a business invitation.... after the first 15 minutes, you couldn't have pried me out of my seat (first row, first balcony...amazing)....I was glued to it. then that great dinner.
That aria just knocks the stuffing out of me....it's exquisite.
I'm glad you liked it.
KIIIIIID....come OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!! :0(

I wish exercising was on the top of a list for ME :-)
I ADORE carnations...the scent is better than roses to me! Grandmother used to hang towels on a line outside in the sun over carnations...they'd get crisp and wonderful in the air and have a slight scent of the flowers in them.....fabulous!

Z - I LOVE cheese enchiladas with rice and beans.
The KJV is not as used anymore...sadly.
My bible study used the NIV but now it's the English Standard Version because the NIV's made changes the admin. doesn't love.
My pastor sometimes quotes from The Message, which I really don't like....the Bible in our words; it takes away from the beauty of the language. But, The Message does boil the message down to easier comprehension. Still, I don't like that too much.

The best are at Colleen's in Medford Square
Ducky
I make them myself. My grandmother showed me how to make them when she visted me at the Concord. Some loon
paid her five bucks to make an eggcream. My mother is better at that than I am.
They have an odd drink in Guyana called lime wash. It is similar to limeaide with a splash of vanilla extract. I can't master that yet but I am working on it.
AOW, that's okay....I think comprehensive is a euphemism when someone needs two posts because everything is a 'favorite'...geeez.
sick of it.
Beak...I'm proud that someone wrote GUYANA as a favorite place at my blog...GUYANA, who'da figured!?
I LOVE The Searchers....the end knocks me OUT. That limewash sounds delicious...
Z,
Well, length of comments doesn't bother me as much as it does you. I rarely get long comments anyway.
Except for Damien Charles's blatherings and, now, his ad feminam attacks directed at me -- most recently because I DARED to interview Robert Spencer, someone whom Damien Charles hates.
BTW -- and I'm going to brag -- I went to see my food coach yesterday. The head honcho there wanted to see me as he himself hasn't seen me in a month and I've been sending him emails inquiring about specific matters related to my dramatic weight loss. Z, he didn't recognize me at first!
He says that I stay in the reducing phase only one more week, then taper off into maintenance according to a specific protocol so as to "restart" my pancreas.
I truly do not look like the same person -- only 9 short weeks! I look a full 20 years younger -- and I'm not the one saying that, but rather others.
I did get a handle on the weekly cost (counseling in person once a week and unlimited email consults, and food for one week): well under $100/week. To be precise, $84 is the norm for a one week's supply of Ideal Protein products ($50-$75 one-time registration fee the first week).
The weight loss is wonderful, of course. But the BEST part is the anti-inflammatory effect of this diet.
Enough blabbing. Have a wonderful Lord's Day. Mr. AOW and I are staying in (This awful heat!) and will be watching the movie A Face in the Crowd.
I don't know how that cost compares to Nutrisystem, but those are the numbers.
Z
The country of Guyana is a nasty dangerous place. The jungles are pristine and untouched. If you get a small boat and a reliable local
it is fun.
I prefer nature to concrette. When Hugo dies I will explore the border regions. Right not the area is too dangerous. The area has the largest collection of carnivorous plants.
If Elmer gets cilantro then I want rosemary
Z, but that's what makes us great friends! We have different taste but yet, we have a lot more in common. I love ya!
AOW, that all sounds fabulous and WAY less than I spend on food myself, really...considering groceries and eating out..WAY less. I need to look into that...thanks.
I'm so proud of you!
Leticia, exactly :-) The most important things are important to us both! xxx
