Not a STERLING fellow at ALL........

On Donald Sterling, the bigoted, foul mouthed racist swine who owns the Clippers;  There's talk that the Basketball commissioner could keep him from attending games or even force him out of ownership.  All sorts of financial punishment's being discussed, too.  Really?  We can do that to someone who's, in private, said deplorable things?  Why not let the market decide?...let's say all the players refuse to play?  Let's say nobody attends a Clippers game till he's gone.  Isn't that what we should be doing?

Do you think he should be officially taken down, no matter WHAT hideous stuff he said?

Can you weigh in?

Thanks,
Z

As I read somewhere earlier today.....being an asshole is still legal. There is no legal recourse for anyone to pursue the infringement of Sterling's livelihood or holdings..other than the free market.

Anyone who bloviates in the media to the contrary has both an inflated sense of importance, and a mistaken understanding of the reach of government action towards a private conversation.

Sterlings own words don't disgust me half as much as the leak of personal communication, and the politico-media frenzy over this contrived drama.

First of all, the source appears to be a private communication between Sterling and his girlfriend. Is she pissed off at him about something else?

Second, I agree with CI.

Third, if America is going to punish everyone who has uttered ethnic slurs, are we also going to punish Jesse Jackson. Google-search "Jesse Jackson ethnic slurs."

The players should play.
They're under contract.
The NBA has ownership rules, like a homeowners association.
Meet the rules or leave to protect the interests of the other investors.
Fans can do what they want.
Nobody weighs in on that this guy told her to sleep with whoever she wants (black or otherwise), just watch who she's seen with in public.
That's not racism.
That's vanity.

Although I DO NOT at all agree with anything that Donald Sterling said, in fact I do think that he was and is a Idiot for saying what he did. And maybe, he’s the worst owner in the league And yes he is a Moron. But however! None of these are criminal. It’s his right to say what he wants to, The last time I checked, we “STILL” have freedom of speech here in America!
Do you remember not to long ago when the NAACP wanted to charge a Rodeo Clown with a “Hate Crime” for doing a comedy skit of Obama! Did any one or any organization say that when they were all ridiculing President Bush, and depicting him as a chimpanzee ?
Sterling has every right to tell his girl friend to stop embarrassing him by bringing the aids infected brown man that she sleeps with to HIS basketball games.
And I do see a framed angle here, by having the Girlfriend bring up this topic while she was taping him. .
And that those who are trying to make this a racism issue such as Magic Johnson may have his own angel and reason for this, such as buying the team at a cheap price. And that the girlfriend set him up

These things have been getting out of hand in the media lately as if they were the only news in America. the same with Bundy, Phil Robertson, case’s etc. It's pathetic how they can smear and destroy a person like the NYSslimes did to Bundy and you all jumped on that like firkin hunger predators...all for what? To show how racist we Republican’s are?
everyone in this country, black, white, pink, etc has some racist-prejudices in them you think you will EVER be able to stop without jailing people which is what you libs and President is now pushing is sick, why is he commenting about a private matter all the way from Asia?
Here in America we have the right to say whatever we want too, even a racist speech is not a crime we may not like a lot of the garbage people say but that is part of living in a free society. Did we ever jail a Black panther or a Rapper for the disgusting things that they say? Google Spike Lee and see what he said yesterday! And worst of all, google Snoop Doggy and read what HE said. Or better yet, I’ll write it here for you.

"A message to the mother*cker that owns the Clippers. You b*tch a**, you REDNECK, WHITE BREAD, chicken sh*t motherf*cker,""F*ck you, your mama and everything connected to you, you racist piece of sh*t. F*ck you!"

I rest my case.

I see a certain amount of justice in Sterling's current predicament. For years he paid off the race baiters and hustlers with donations to their causes, seeking to avoid the very scrutiny currently being given him. He, in effect, gave them the very tools of power and influence being used against him.

Sorry, Don, but you won't be receiving your SECOND NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award this year. And I sincerely doubt that the NAACP and UNCF will be remitting any of your previous checks to them, either.

The good news take-away from mr. ducky's comment is that he seems to recognize the fact that the "re-distributionists" should stay out of the NBA Franchise distribution business and stick to more important things, like consolidating control over the 1/6th of the US economy they stole with the enactment of Obamacare.

After all, what is the "use value" of "health", if not to sit at home and collect unemployment checks from the federal government.

I disagree. He should absolutely be able to 'get away with what he said". If the 1st Amendment protections toward speech have any meaning whatsoever, it's precisely to protect unpopular speech. If it only protects speech of a bland sense of civility, then most comments on blogs such as this, would be suspect at best, and criminal at worst.

Secondly, who exactly would 'do something about this man'? What is the scope of government or law enforcement in matters of private communications, where libel and slander do not remotely apply?

As repulsive as Sterling's views are in terms of blacks, I find it even more disgusting people think he should be stripped of property ownership because of something he said in the privacy of his own home. If we're seriously going to punish people for their personal views and for expressing those views in their own homes, while applauding a gold digging hag who illegally recorded him, than we can forever stop saying this is a free country because it certainly isn't.

If people have a problem with Sterling, don't buy his product. If players don't want to play for him, don't play for him. If you can't work for him, don't work for him. But taking away his rights to own his property, in this case the Clippers, simply because you're offended by his personal beliefs, is the exact opposite of tolerance.

highboy said...

Which is as it should be in my opinion. Good for them.

Rita said...

That^^ being said, Sterling has every right to be a bigot and say what he wants. And the players, fans and advertisers have every right to pull their support.

Freedom of speech means that idiots like Sterling or Westboro or Dixie Chicks have the absolute right to spout their ignorant views.

But freedom of speech does not mean there will not be backblow from those who disagree.

The left screamed bloody murder when DC fans abandoned them in droves. But they had no issue when Brenden Eich was forced out because he had the same view of marriage that Obama held at the same time.

I have to support free speech when I adamantly disagree with it (Westboro just sends me way over the top in anger) the same as when I do agree with it. Otherwise I do not believe in free speech at all.

Sterling has to be an idiot. But calling for "something to be done about him" is ignorant.

Let the market decide. But like KAJ says! where was the outrage when he was actually discriminating rather than just spouting ignorance on a private phone call?

NAACP lifetime achievement award? Apparently you can buy those regardless of your actions, but not your leaked words.

Constitutional Insurgent said...

Waylon....holy cow, what a dialogue!

I agree with everyone;

And did you hear Mark Cuban agree with us, too? As he said it's REALLY SCARY to start thinking people will be condemned for whatever they say or do in PRIVATE.

This man is a total bigot and let the fans discern.

And, as we all know; this will blow over because nobody wants to miss a Clippers game! Sad, but true$$$$

I wonder if the ridicule's even hurting him emotionally? Or is he a Soros type who also sold out his own Jewish people ??

Baysider said...

No way - let his market make him pay. And it should! You can see the value of 'shunning' practiced in some cultures.

And where is this crowd that's calling for his head when Sharpton et al spout off the same kind of stuff (as Mustang said) with impunity? I'm with CI on private communications being leaked. (Dennis Prager actually defended Hillary Clinton in print years ago when a similar thing happened with her equally ugly remarks about Jews.)

Lest anyone think this is a theoretical defense of principal without a dog in the fight, I have direct personal knowledge of Mr. Sterling's 'character' in social and business associations. I won't repeat specifics in public. But trust me, he revels in an inflated sense of importance and can treat anyone like dirt, even a white upper middle class scion of an entertainment family who was his invited guest.

It's Leona Helmsley all over again with that master-servant attitude and mercurial bouts of humiliation of others. But money covers a lot. What does it say about our collective character as a culture when we let it pass?

So Obama weighs in on Sterling but not on Muslims codifying killing Muslims AND non Muslims under HUDUD, or part of Shari'a Law....which he was made well aware of.

As one who cringes when our presidents are asked embarrassing questions by American media when they're out of country and focusing on other issues, not the ones asked about, I kind of get it; On the other hand, if you have time to dash right in and condemn Sterling, you probably ought to consider mentioning the typical inhumanity of Islam ..

The latest distraction from the list of failures, the scandals, and the horrific job performance that Obama is doing, is the story about a LIBERAL BILLIONAIRE Basketball Team owner named Donald Sterling’s Racist Remark.
A distraction? Yes, from Obama, the President who seems to love to make statements about Blacks in the news, like, Henry Louis Gates, the University Professor at Harvard, Trayvon Martin and now Donald Sterling but can’t utter a word about the IRS scandal, Benghazi, Fast and Furious, etc. Anything to take the focus from Benghazi and IRS, and the rest of Obama’s scandals. .
Maybe us dumb crackers don’t understand this so please tell me where I’m wrong!
But isn’t there more important issues, for the President of the United States to be concerned with then a senile 80 year old billion dollar team owner fighting with a bunch of uneducated overpaid athletes that get paid millions, because they played Basketball in the Getto schoolyards for hours and hours. And they just happened to be born 7 foot freaks!. Otherwise most of them would not have gotten out of 2nd grade.
Oh yes I almost forgot, He Did Impose Some New Sanctions on Russia Last Week, how much can I ask for!!
Sterling apparently doesn’t like black people, OK, is that a Crime? Is that any reason to keep this freaken story on the front pages of every newspaper on every news report on the radio, on television, and every other place I go?
Pretty soon their going to want to make anything said about a Back person a Hate crime, it’s plainly obvious.
My question is why should I care how Donald Sterling feels about blacks? And my answer to that is I really don’t! I don’t care the least. But I do care about the lynching he is getting in the press etc. etc. and etc. for expressing his own opinion in his own home on his own telephone, and having your private conversations taped.
Sterling is clearly a bigot there is no agreement there ..
Unfortunately, for the politically correct Professional race baiters like Sharpton and Obama have of course, jumped into their professionally offended black person mode. They smell either dollars or political coverage out of this latest media invention. Do not expect this to go away until the NBA forces Sterling to give up his team. And that is exactly what will happen. Yes even here in the USA!.
Is he worse or more dangerous than the racist maggots like Jay Z, Snoop Dogg, Spike Lee, or that Buffone Al Sharpton and the rest of those creeps? And the latest is that the former NY Knick Larry Johnson is calling for a all Black Basketball League... Isn’t that sweet. And Charles Barkley said that the NBA is a "black league" and it's time that they had some representation of their own.

And they say that only whites can be Racist

So the news is in, Clippers owner Donald Sterling was banned for life by the NBA, also fined $2.5 million dollars and can never enter the stadium again for the rest of his life.
So much for Free Speech in the USA.
So, in other words, if he had the guts to express how he felt, and said what he felt. He get a worse sentence than some guy who punches you in your face as you walk donw the street because he’s bored and is playing a “Game”
But if your Black, you can say whatever the hell you want to!

Donald Sterling, the “Racist”owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, was barred for life from the league and fined $2.5 million by N.B.A Commissioner Adam Silver on Tuesday for racist comments captured on an audio tape that Silver said Sterling admitted were his. Silver said Sterling would be barred from any contact with his team or the league and he will urge the league’s board of governors to force Sterling to sell the team.

So, let Me get this right. If you dare to say how you feel in the privacy of your own home on your own telephone to who you thought was your girlfriend, you are all but crucified and made to be the laughing stock of the world.
And Larry Johnson wants to have an ALL BLACK BASKETBALL LEAGUE. Please won’t somebody tell him that we already have an all black basketball league. It's called the NBA.

The NBA doesn't SELECT owners, does it? I could be wrong, I suppose.

Actually Z, they do pick who is allowed to be owners. no one can own a major sports team in America without approval from the existing owners.

Financial ability does not matter.

If an individual wants to be an owner, they not only must pay to play, but get approved by at least a 3/4 majority of the owners.

That's why it was such a big deal when MLB approved Arte Moreno to buy the Angels a few years ago. First Latino owner ever approved.

Congress has overwhelmingly approved legislation that will keep the public not just at arms’ length distance but a football field away by making it a federal crime to protest or assemble in the vicinity of protected government officials. The Trespass Bill (the Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011) creates a roving “bubble” zone or perimeter around select government officials and dignitaries (anyone protected by the Secret Service), as well as any building or grounds “restricted in conjunction with an event designated as a special event of national significance.”

Professional athletes do things like that all the time, it rarely results in any kind of disciplinary action, and even their better-behaved teammates don't seem to think it's worth protesting.

Not just in the NBA but in the NFL too.

No, this is not an opportunity to talk about racism. This is about freedom thought vs thought control. This is about freedom of speech, real freedom, not just the freedom to say only what Liberals approve of. This is a shameful day for America. If you support this nonsense, you support a level of thought control that would make Stalin blush.

It doesn't matter what the speech was or how rich he is or how old he is. The only thing that matters is that America has assigned total control of private speech and thought over to the liberal establishment. You now have no right to any unapproved opinions or thoughts. Even the fictional Big Brother never had such power. I feel sorry for all of us...and Sterling and not his gold digging whore. I hope she has to back to street corner hooking.

Obviously, there are negotiations beyond just wanting it, but...
I guess what you're also implying is that they HAVE kept people out of ownership.

One CAN look at the first Hispanic owner as "oh boy, what a first...finally, they're putting their racism away" OR one can say "Hey, this guy's the first Hispanic with THAT much money! Good for HIM!"

The decision by the league took some balls. Like it or not it. I support Sterling's right to hold his bigoted racist views and express them. The NBA also has the right to respond as governed by the leagues bylaws.

You obviously have no idea what the 1st amendment and free speech means. Sterling's "free speech" was not contravened by the US government. The marketplace (other NBA owners) decided that what Sterling said harmed the image of the NBA. Period.

Well, my BIG Mouthed “Friend” I think otherwise! What does the right of free expression encompass? The government may not: a) prohibit one’s own expression; b) prevent one from receiving another’s expression; c) compel one to express certain views; d) foster adherence to an ideological viewpoint; or, e) compel one to subsidize speech to which one objects. It is the right to express one’s beliefs, without any form of governmental interference, that is at the heart of “free speech.”

In MY mind, and what I am aware of the Meaning of Free Speech is as follows!

Freedom of speech, gives us Americans the right of people to express their opinions publicly without governmental interference, subject to the laws against libel, incitement to violence or rebellion, etc.
Why did the NBA Commissioner impose all those sanctions BEFORE a vote from the other Team Owners? And how can you stop anyone from going to a game when the person still owns the team? And what crime did he commit to warrant ANY fine?

"Well, my BIG Mouthed “Friend” I think otherwise! What does the right of free expression encompass?"

So DD, before you call people "dumb" or "big-mouthed", you should probably brush up on Constitutional law, because nothing the NBA Commissioner did violated the first amendment whatsoever. The NBA is completely within its own rights to operate its business how they see fit. The first amendment protects us from the government infringement on free speech yes, that has NOTHING to do with what the NBA did.

I personally think its stupid that he has a lifetime ban while people who have committed actual crimes got slaps on the wrist from the NBA. But the first amendment is only violated if the government is doing the violating. I'm not allowed to use bad language at my job, that doesn't mean the government is trampling my civil liberties.

highboy said...

@z: this has been looked at legally from all angles. I'm sure Sterling will try to sue, but he has no legal leg to stand on. The NBA's own Constitution gives them clear rights to do what they did. I don't agree that they should have, I'm with you, what he said in the privacy of his own home is his business, but they were within their legal rights. The U.S. government or court system would have no authority to overturn their decision, especially on free speech grounds.

As far as backlash... it was taped in PRIVATE.....no backlash needed to have happened. Understand that?

So what?
Once this became public he was toast.

He has a history of serious racism and it was a matter of time.
Stuff happens.

Imp: I have never heard one commenter here from the Right EVER say the racist, elitist stuff that Liberaljerk does here on a daily basis.
Yes, put all 'rightwingers' on boxcars...nice, huh?

He'll come back now and accuse me of censorship :-)

Actually, he's kind of a metaphor for the leftwingers, isn't he. He'll say something truly AWFUL, then try to stop him, and I'LL be called names :-)

Ducky....I can figure it out. You're missing my point.
goodnight.

Kid..thanks. the voice of reason

What thought police, bubba?

The guy goes out strutting with his chippie when his wife is after his scalp and doesn't have the common sense to curb his tongue and you're blaming the thought police.

The fool walked into a straight right (probably his wife who leaked the tape). It happens when yu're pompous and stupid.

Why do black people always defend each other, no matter if they are wrong and know it? One example: Trayvon Martin... They will always defend each other to the grave, even though that person was in the wrong. Sometimes it would be completely insane to take sides with that person, but because he's black and im black I will defend him. WHY?
An entire race based on the moronic actions of one or a few, no matter how much attention the media gives those people, they are always on the side of the Black guy.

Yes, I known that this is stereotyping, but to prove my point, just read some of “Ducky’s” comments..

I don't necessarily hate black people. I hate "gangsta" culture which just happens to be founded and consist mostly of black people. We see it all the time, on TV, in Rapper concerts, and even on in the movies. It's such a stupid self destructive and embarrassing culture. The thing is every black person I've met who's come from Africa or the middle east is usually really cool. They've also straight up told me they hate hanging out with American blacks because they hate the gangster culture as well. Having just come out of 3rd world cultures run by people like that they tend to want to avoid those kinds of people.

What's even worse is that this gangster culture is starting to spread outside of African Americans to pretty much everybody. I know white college kids who are all into the gangster culture and it's annoying as hell.
I guess they think it’s the "COOL" thing to do. Listening to people talk about they want to kill somebody because of the way they act...that person needs counseling before they become a killer. Is that better than being ignorant, or is that just as and more ignorant? And why don’t those “So Called” Black Leaders like Al “Sharpy” Sharpton, oe Jessie Jerkson speak-out against it?
Why is it that other blacks like Black Caribbeans, Africans, etc are civil but BLACK AMERICANS ARE HOOLIGANS!

Anyway, my two cents on the situation.
