Obama's "closely MONITORING" the Arizona bill that just got signed.......Uhoh

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama criticized Arizona's tough immigration bill as irresponsible Friday and said his administration is examining whether it would violate civil rights.

From THIS ARTICLE: Obama said the federal government must act responsibly to reform national immigration law – or "open the door to irresponsibility by others."

"That includes, for example, the recent efforts in Arizona, which threaten to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and their communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe," Obama said.

If signed into law by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, the legislation would require police to question people about their immigration status if there's reason to suspect they're in the country illegally. Civil rights activists say such a law would lead to racial profiling and deter Hispanics from reporting crimes.

Obama instructed the Justice Department to examine the bill to see if it would violate civil rights.

Z: That sentence in red really bothers me. Obama's exact quote, which I finally found and show below, bugs me even more:

"In fact, I’ve instructed members of my administration to closely monitor the situation and examine the civil rights and other implications of this legislation. But if we continue to fail to act at a federal level, we will continue to see misguided efforts opening up around the country."

Does that bother you, too? He's instructed people to closely monitor the situation .... against a governor's signature on a bill? Do you remember when a president's done this in the past, where a governor has signed a bill and a president has said it's 'misguided' and has ordered his people to "closely monitor the situation?" Ick. That's scary.

it is the way of the country...it's a copy of the federal law at the state level. if the federal gov't protests it almost certainly will have to look at its own law. Napolitano when she was governer sent invoice after invoice to the federal gov't to try and recoup the costs of doing the federal govts job. Of course Arizona was never reimbursed and this bill was the result of years of federal neglect.
The feds are the ones they should be pissed off at.

Z, the last thing I did before I came here was post in this. We seem to mirror each other a lot ;)

My point on this Justice Department bit is that instead of doing his job on illegal immigration, the President of the United States has decided to sue his own citizens.

No American president has done enough about the problem of illegal migration to the United States. In fairness, there are many reasons for this—all of which appear to reflect a lack of integrity on this side of the border. We don’t want to halt illegal immigration because these people perform much needed cheap labor for border area farmers and other industries/services. Should anyone require proof of this, just watch workers scatter whenever a Border Patrol vehicle enters a construction site. In this regard, I do think we Americans have unfairly exploited the people from south of the border.

Complicating this problem is the fact that our nation acts as a magnet to these people. Perhaps it is our (unwarranted) white guilt (brainwashed into our children by the socialist education model); we offer illegal aliens so many benefits, it actually encourages this massive influx of people. And how has our government reacted to this invasion? Why, by granting amnesty; requiring communities to support, through taxation, free services. Finally, when a state behaves in its own best interests and those of the lawful citizens of Arizona, the American president calls into question whether the legislative process was “appropriate.”

OUR government is the problem, not the illegal aliens.

Boy, boy, does it ever BOTHER me, too, Z.

Obama's NOT concerned about the civil rights of Arizona citizens, particularly the murdered rancher and his dog.

HOW DARE THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES ATTACK THE STATE OF ARIZONA FOR ENACTING LEGISLATION WHICH PROTECTS ITS CITIZENS!

President Obama was supposedly a professor of Constitutional Law. It begs the question, what country's constitution? Because he doesn't know squat about ours.

I said it before and I'll say it again, Barack Obama thinks he has been elected Dictator. Every day he grows more and more like Hugo Chavez.

FairWitness said...

Froggie, why doesn't Obama see the REAL victims? Like the murdered rancher and his dog. Like the citizens of Arizona being victimized by crime, assault, drugs, kidnapping, destruction of property and theft. Not to mention the crushing cost in terms of tax dollars.

ELECTED OFFICIALS' DUTY IS PROTECT CITIZENS!!!!! Why doesn't the Left get that????

Z said...

Mustang, you said "No American president has done enough about the problem of illegal migration to the United States."
I wish I could find now the same email I've rec'd from probably ten people over the last three weeks showing that other presidents took illegals OUT of the country. I believe Eisenhower did, in 3 years, got rid of millions?

I agree that we have used those workers and then we've screwed ourselves by giving 'anchor families' billing over our families..."Oh, they had a child here..they're IN!" How long would it take ANYbody to have a child if that was in the offing?!! "and we'll PAY for that baby, TOO!" horrid.

We've given terrible mixed messages to, especially, Hispanic illegals....'we don't really want you breaking our laws but we're going to pay for everything you need here...'

"AND, we're going to teach your children in Spanish so they'll stay gardeners and cleaning ladies, too!" That was the Leftwingers, of course, eager to keep them DOWN and VOTE HANDOUT (i.e. DEMOCRAT!)

Some of the very, very sweetest people I know are the Hispanics who clean my house and care for the garden and spray water on the fresh fruit at my grocery store and tell me where I can find the mangos and wish me a happy day ....

On the other hand, construction sites HERE are a nightmare; I knew a man who was a construction mgr at a new apt building complex which was going up and they told him they'd kill him if he didn't hire their friends. And, they did come to his home with guns. He had a heart attack shortly after and is still on disability, I believe.
They threaten terribly and get their way because people are scared. That's widespread here.

my girlfriend told me her Mexican gardener of 10 years, a man she adored for his kindnesses, left about five years ago, telling her to be careful, there will be an uprising and he'll try to come help her when it happens.
One used to hear frequently of guns and ammo being found in cars stopped for breaking traffic laws; Mexicans driving with huge amts of ammo, etc. Where were they going? What's been done about that? How many cars that were NOT stopped had guns and ammo in them?

I could go on and on.....it's a mixed bag and nothing of it's good.....not until people want to come here and participate in the American dream, not speak their language at my grocery store, treat ER's in the area like they're a doc's office (causing the closure of 3 hospitals because they couldn't afford to stay open$$$)....etetetc...Until then, we have problems that really can't be solved.

How do you keep Germans with excellent job skills from coming in by throwing every stumbling block in the book at them (it still takes about 5 yrs to enter legally from Europe) and turn a blind eye to this huge illegal problem, letting people in who add little?

The arguments Obama used are so pathetic.."Hispanics won't turn the bad guys in.." really, how many do they turn in NOW?

At least this bill will give America some respect back; that somewhere, we're standing by the laws, not being some dirty doormat country.

I believe it's our government's problem, too.........but illegals have taken great advantage of it.

Fair Witness, I believe the gov't doesn't really care because they think that rancher was wrong in protecting his land...remember, we have this new mentality that anything America does to protect herself is heinously cruel and inhumane. (!)

Malcontent, La Raza is a far bigger threat that some people realize.

States' rights died at Fort Sumter. We just haven't buried the rotted, stinking corpse yet.

If Arizona passes this law, you may be sure it will quickly be overturned by a liberal Federal judge.

We are not governed by our representatives in state and federal legislatures. Instead, we are ruled by lawyers and judges.

The judiciary has become totally politicized, and routinely changes the course of American life against the wishes of the (conscious) majority. The judges have no qualm or conscience about this.

The super-centralization of power in the federal government, and routine disregard for the Constitution began with The War Between the States. It accelerated with the emergence of the labor movement and "Progressivism."
We have come to a place where "racial profiling" and "discrimination" are considered worse sins than living in a LAWLESS society where overwhelming the medical system till it breaks down, overwhelming "social services" till they can't function, tax evasion, drug running, child prostitution, kidnaping, trespassing, vandalism, gang warfare in the city streets and MURDER.

How we could hope to continue in this fashion without RADICAL REFORM, I can't imagine.

It is interesting that everyone in the country has just been racially profiled through the government run census.

It's also interesting that the government is talking about national ID cards.

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't think any free American citizen should be required to be profiled unless he commits a crime, or required to carry a National ID card.

I can see the complication with a law, if it allows checking ID based on how people look without probable cause. And who decides what probable cause is?

I can see a tyrannical government, under the guise of "fairness", requiring everyone to carry a national ID card at all times.

Obviously, if someone commits a crime, or is pulled over for a driving infraction, he has to provide identification. When a child is registered in school he too must have identification provided.

Ostensibly, when you apply for a job, you also have to provide identification.

One problem which exists is the flouting of federal law which is ignored in establishing sanctuary cities. It's done openly, while the federal government turns a blind eye. This is a magnet.

Employers break the law when they knowingly hire illegal workers. This too, is a magnet.

The federal government has diddled around for many years, avoiding their responsibilty to close the border, and in providing the funds necessary to guard it adequately.

Now, violence and drug cartels are spilling over the border and Arizona is taking measures to protect it's people.

The cost to Arizona, California, and others because of illegal aliens is prohibitive. Billions of dollars a year. Just welfare alone for Illegals is a huge burden on taxpayers.

Crime rates skyrocket with the influx of foreign gangs from Mexico. The prison population of illegal aliens is I believe, 25% in California.

I agree with Mustang, the government is the problem. Amnesty is not the answer, but, that's what Obama and the democrats are after. Votes! Republican politicians are just between a rock and a hard place.

Unless the border is sealed and guarded properly, employers have to pay heavily for hiring illegal aliens, and sanctuary cities lose federal funding, nothing will change.

Arizona did what they had to do. The federal government has not enforced our laws regarding illegal immigration, and in fact, has encouraged it.

Obama will use this as an excuse for "immigration reform" but not the kind of reform we yearn for.

Unfortunately, Arizonans will be given the now obvious demonization treatment which this administration is well schooled in. They'll be called racist, nazis, you name it.

The fact that the majority of Americans support legal immigration will be lost in the shuffle.

Nothing this administration does is for the welfare of American citizens, I see no reason to expect this to be any diffeent.

Here are highlights from the bill (from RightKlik blog)

* Requires a reasonable attempt to determine the immigration status of a person during any legitimate contact made by a government official if there is reasonable suspicion that the person is unlawfully present in the U.S.
Z: THEY COULDN'T DO THIS PREVIOUSLY, OR DIDN'T. IMAGINE? REASONABLE SUSPICION IS A PROBLEM IN A DEMOCRACY, LET'S FACE IT, BUT WHEN IT'S OBVIOUS THERE'S A PROBLEM AND THEY STILL CAN'T ASK, WE HAVE BIGGER PROBLEMS.

* Requires an alien unlawfully present in the U.S. who is convicted of a violation of state or local law to be transferred immediately to the custody of ICE or Customs and Border Protection.

Z; DOWN SIDE TO THIS, PLEASE?

* Trespassing by Illegal Aliens: Specifies that a person is guilty of trespassing if the person is present on any public or private land in the state and is not carrying his or her alien registration card.

Z; AGAIN..DOWN SIDE? THE ONLY DOWN SIDE I ACTUALLY DO SEE HERE, COME TO THINK OF IT, IS LEGAL HISPANICS OR ARABS OR WHOEVER'S COME ACROSS SOMEHOW...THEY DON'T HAVE REGISTRATION CARDS BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE ID CARDS....HOW DO LEGALS PROVE THEY'RE LEGAL? I COULDN'T IF I WAS STOPPED.

* Stipulates it is unlawful to encourage or induce an alien to come to or reside in Arizona if the person knows that residing in this state is in violation of law.

Z; HARD TO PROVE, BUT GIVES TEETH TO ANY REASONABLE DOUBT OR REASONABLE INVESTIGATION, AT LEAST.

* Investigations of Employers: States that it is not entrapment for law enforcement officers or their agents merely to use a ruse or to conceal their identities.

Z; UHOH...AMERICA'S BACK IN BUSINESS. NOW WAIT FOR LIBS TO CONSIDER WE'RE WRONG AND IGNORE THE FACT THAT LAW BREAKERS ARE MORE WRONG...WHAT'LL IT TAKE, TWO SECONDS?

* Establishes a class 3 felony for failing to verify employment eligibility through E-Verify or keep records of verifications.

Z; ISN'T THIS FEDERAL LAW? IF NOT, WHY NOT?

WHAT A DIRTY DOORMAT OUR COUNTRY'S BECOME.

Well, this was during the mid-1980s and thanks to apathetic voters, honesty in government is a thing of the past.

I do not think the Arizona legislature would draft a bill of this magnitude if was not confident of its legal foundation. I suspect teams of lawyers researched the bill long before it reached the desk of 33 senators and 62 house members.

I suspect the issue could get to the US Supreme Court and it would be interesting whether SCOTUS decides Arizona’s law tramples on federal authority, even when or if Arizona argues abrogation of federal responsibility. Equally interesting will be whether Obama attempts to federalize Arizona. I do wonder if Obama is smart enough to realize Mexican warlords are watching carefully.

From a statement of the Arizona Hispanic Republicans in response to the passage of Senate Bill 1070:

Arizona Hispanic Republicans will not vote for [Governor] Jan Brewer this year because we are holding her accountable for supporting a bill that violates the Constitution and our Civil Rights. I have sounded the alarm to all Republicans in this state that the passing of this bill is political suicide.

The State of Arizona already has a blemish because we were the last state of the Union to recognize Martin Luther King as an official holiday. Arizona Hispanic Republicans will write an open letter to our RNC Chair, Michael Steele, as he continues to consider where to hold our next 2011 GOP convention. We will caution our RNC Chair to consider the consequences of that because then it could be perceived as rewarding the state that implemented strong anti-Hispanic laws that has rattled our community and our Civil Rights.

and neither is protecting ranchers and Americans from criminals.

Unless you live here in Arizona I wouldn't expect you to understand. No I wish for no one's rights to be trampled but this bill does not encourage that. Racial profiling is already illegal. The police have always had the right to ask for an ID, citizen or not.

Arizona is the kidnap capital of the country, we tolerate more illegal immigrants than any other state in the Union and the largest number or illegals come to this country through our state. Why some think this is ok to allow people to flaunt our laws I don't know. Certainly we don't begrudge other coutnries from protecting their borders. Many many of the crimes here are committed by illegal aliens. Recently we had a man convicted of raping pre teen girls in their home and law enforcement officers have been shot and killed. We've had hospitals close because they've been overwhelmed by illegal immigrants.

My neighbor is a county sheriff, he's been unable to do a thing to determine a person's legal residency status when a misdemeanor is committed. This simply has to stop.

EB, the left wants to make this a civil rights issue, when it's clearly not. It's a criminal issue.

Laws against immigration, murder, trespassing, robbery, kidnapping, theft, destruction of private property, drug abuse and drug trafficking, rape, driving without a license, fraud, .... almost every law on the books is being violated by illegals, besides their illegally being here.

We don't allow our own citizens to commit crimes, why should we accept this lawlessness from illegal aliens? So we don't potentially offend someone's feelings by asking to see their identification? We're supposed to accept murder and animal cruelty in order to protect someone's feelings????

Get outta here! You lefties are completely out of your minds. And we're not listening to this BS anymore.

Z said...

As for this law, it's more allowing law enforcement to do what was IN the law, anyway, as Elbro's been saying. Before, they couldn't even ask. This is dangerous for everyone, but the lefties really don't seem to care about danger.
God prevent them from finally waking up through something that happens by illegals to THEIR families.

That rancher who was murdered in cold blood had told somebody (thru text, I believe) that he was helping some illegals who were in trouble and he'd be home soon. They killed him. And, by the way, that information was only in the very first reports of the situation; I haven't seen that mentioned since.

Arizona Hispanic Republicans believe that it is unfortunate for Jan Brewer to support Pearce’s bill. The greatest leaders in our nation had courage, and we believe that Brewer made her decision in an effort to save her political career. Jan Brewer’s decision will mark today as the day in which Hispanic Americans will follow the footsteps of the Great Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. Pearce and Brewer do not see the unintended consequences of their actions, and it appears that they were willing to make decisions that affect us at the cost of trampling on our Constitutional Rights [My emphasis]

"Seventy-two percent (72%) of those who pray every day say their religious faith is very important to their daily lives.
A federal judge in Wisconsin recently struck down as unconstitutional the National Day of Prayer, declared by Congress in 1952. But 60% of Americans favor having the federal government recognize a National Day of Prayer.
Sixty-seven percent (67%) of adults who favor a National Day of Prayer say a prayer daily, compared to 17% who rarely or never pray.
But then only 21% of all Americans think that rulings by judges in recent years regarding religion in public life have correctly interpreted the U.S. Constitution. Sixty-four percent (64%) of adults believe the judges’ rulings have been more anti-religious than the Founding Fathers intended.
While the courts in recent years have pushed religion out of most schools, Americans by a nearly two-to-one margin – 61% to 31% - favor prayer in public schools. Americans also remain overwhelmingly in favor of allowing religious symbols to be displayed on public land and feel even more strongly that public schools should celebrate at least some religious holidays.

Rightwingers who whine that the health care reform law is a denial of freedom deny that Arizona's harsh immigration law may deny Hispanic citizens the freedom to exercise without risk of harassment the same constitutional rights as others have.

and tell me which part of the bill deny's Arizona's Hispanic citizens any rights?

let's be honest here the protesters are not upset about potential civil rights violations, if they were they would be protesting about every other bill passed into law. What they are really protesting is the potential loss in income to their family members back in Mexico. I listened to comments on the local news from the protesters and almost to a person they were upset about the economic implicaitions of the law, at least they were honest about it.

If there could be an honest debate about the economic issues then the real onus would be on the Mexican government. They are the ones failing here.

I say it's ironic about the zero sum issue because of examples from the left like the dependency theory and liberation theology.

and it was the left who were telling us that health insurance was a right

BeAmish: I would challenge Arizona Hispanic Republicans to provide just one example of an American citizen's civil rights being violated by requirements to provide proof of identity and citizenship status to a government agency.

Considering American history, the fears of the Arizona Hispanic Republicans are not without foundation, since giving power to state and local police to stop persons upon what in their judgment is reasonable suspicion can lead to abuses of police power. Some local police officials in Arizona have been abusive toward immigrants, according to Grant Woods, a former state attorney general.

It is not a lie to discredit PsiBond's use of a Abe Lincoln quote about slavery to contrive an argument in defense of illegal immigration, but rather merely an addition to the catalogue of evidence of the well established fact that PsiBond is an imbecile.

It is extreme foolishness, BeAmish, to berate me for the use of the Lincoln quote; it was the concluding line in the public statement issued by the Arizona Hispanic Republicans, who considered it pertinent to their current situation. You can dismiss these people as fools, as well, but your false assumption about the line’s provenance is another piece of factual evidence that your perception is severely distorted by your self-belittling passionate quest to prop up your silly mantra about all your so-called “leftists”.

Bro: and tell me which part of the bill deny's [sic] Arizona's Hispanic citizens any rights?

The problem is in conferring greater power on non-federal law enforcement officials — i.e., the state and local police. The situation is still developing and definitely needs to be closely monitored, by both freedom-loving Americans and Justice Department officials in the Obama administration.

Even Tom Tancredo (yes, that Tancredo) said he’s concerned that the Arizona law could lead to people being pulled over because they look like they should be pulled over.

Quoting Lincoln out of context does not give a veneer of respectability to advocates of illegal immigration, whether it is done by Arizona Hispanic Republicans or generic Democrat imbeciles, PsiBond.

again where specifically does the bill mention harassing, discriminating or profiling Hispanics?

the "advantaged" members happen to be legal citizens of this country

if the rub lies with 'potential' abuses then any law would be protested

I don't believe this is about civil rights and if people were honest about this they'd admit that

When you abridge the right of many dark-skinned decent Americans to move about without challenge and harassment by law enforcement officials, you threaten their freedom. Lincoln’s immortal statement is as true and appropriate today as it was in his own time. For, whether it is quoted by Arizona Hispanic Republicans advocating respect for their civil rights or by civic-minded liberal Democrats, it is a universal moral principle that is valid contextually for all time:

“Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.”

again, the problem is with those charged with implementing the law, some of whom are known to have been abusive of immigrants. The bill, which is now Arizona law, is not itself the problem, even though it has been found that John Tanton had a hand in it — Tanton’s written correspondence shows connections between his many immigration-reduction efforts and white supremacist, neo-Nazi and pro-eugenics leaders; he has for decades been at the heart of the white nationalist scene, propagating his concern that non-whites are outbreeding whites.

It is a zero-sum policy to strengthen the security of the advantaged members of society by undermining the security of minority groups.

members of minority groups vulnerable to harassment under this law are also, in most cases, respectable legal residents and citizens of the U.S.

The rub lies with a law that enlarges the powers of law enforcement officers who have demonstrated a propensity for abuse of power — not potential but likely.

I don't believe this is about civil rights and if people were honest about this they'd admit that

I don’t question the honesty of Hispanic Americans carrying signs in the street saying “We have rights” and “We are human”.

The right of Americans to move about without challenge and harassment by law enforcement officials?

Which amendment to the Constitution does that fall under, twit?

To wit, the Fourteenth Amendment.

To paraphrase Lincoln: Those who would deny the Fourteenth Amendment to others, deserve it not for themselves.

Opposed to the over-reaching power of government, Karl Rove, Jeb Bush, Lindsey Graham, and other prominent Republicans believe the Arizona law is unconstitutional and could lead to civil rights abuses. The sheriff of Pima County, Arizona said he objects to this law because it is unconstitutional, unnecessary, and racist.
