George Washington's statue is just too upsetting?

I got this email today:
The annual MLK observance at the state house in Columbia SC had an interesting twist this year. The event is held on the north side steps of the statehouse. Prominent at that location is a large bronze statue of George Washington. This year, the NAACP constructed a “box” to conceal the Father of His Country from view so that participants would not be offended by his presence.
I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw this picture of the MLK Day rally in Columbia, South Carolina yesterday.  This rally was sponsored by the NAACP and they said that they covered the statue because they “didn’t want to offend anyone”.  Really?  George Washington is the father of this nation.  How is he offensive to anyone?  Can you imagine what would happen if we covered the statue of Dr. King on President’s Day?  Of course, this disgusting display of anti-Americanism wasn’t covered at all by the national media and only the local paper in Columbia had a little piece on it.  It has been covered a little by the blog-world and I think the word needs to get out to the general public that this is what the NAACP is all about…..militant, hateful and racist.  In doing this, they disrespected Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  I bet he would be equally disgusted.  Awful.

Z: I like to think Dr. King would be utterly disgusted, too.   I am.   If anyone can disprove this and tell me it's photoshopped, I'd be enormously relieved.  WHEN are we going to get a grip and INSIST these things stop?  What kind of people are raised in this great country and resent Washington that much?   Because he had slaves?  Are they THAT unwilling to think, to consider context, to see all the great he did for America?  Or is anything or anyone this American just too American for them?

What do you think?

They should have read George Washington's diaries where he lamented not seperating his male and female hemp plants fast enough (the only reason to do so is to keep them from seeding, i.e. he wanted to have some to smoke). ;)

Z does fantastic job of cataloguing and showcasing the pronounced double standard and base hypocrisy of the left.

That it's safe to take the left wing bias of the media -- and academia -- for granted does not mean each individual example of their manipulative dishonesty should not be exposed, openly discussed and denounced as the disservice to truth and justice that it is.

They didn't want recognition of George Washington, or attention to the statue. Ironically, this brings more attention to it than there would have been otherwise.

What this action does, is show how far infantilism has progressed. Very sad, and it says more about the NAACP than it does about George Washington.

The damn fools can't win for losing!

Okay...smoothing my hair now, breathing steadily...

My parents were born in SC, raised there. I spent my entire childhood (& even now, some) vacationing, visiting family in SC. You could say I'm South Carolinian into my bones. Though I've never lived there...

After the brouhaha over the Confederate Flag on the Capital steps of the state house (which actually had some merit), THIS is no surprise. Ridiculous nonetheless. Z, your friend's assessment is right on the $$.

Imagine - we must blot out our entire history, heritage & those who built it, in order that we can pretend it never happened, that we don't hurt someone's feelings. Or is it to punish those whose ancestors lived during that terrible time?

For sure, there are those who use the Confederate flag & history of slavery as evil racist tools, but there are also those who value it as a real part of our country's history. (And our family's history - in my case.) There are those who value the reasons - other than slave trade - for which a bloody, savage war was fought, & over which a society was virtually decimated. (i.e., States Rights - funny, we're called racists for that still today).

The 'winners' get to write the history books, & NAACP has been happy to comply -- telling all that the divide was exclusively about slavery. While slavery was a horrible, truly reprehensible thing, it was a reality. There were those - caught in its system, through the inopportune timing of their birth - who worked within it for the betterment of their fellow human beings. Our Founders were such people.

This NAACP stunt displays an organization who refuses to acknowledge that humanity operates within the limitations of itself, and cannot be separated from its own context. It also reveals a desperate dig for relevance by a group whose tenure has expired.

Not only do they refuse to acknowledge that their 'job here is done,' it seems that they are he$$-bent on dragging people (all of us) BACK into the pit of racist poison from which we've spent the last 125 years climbing out.

Childish, ridiculous, disgusting; and searingly transparent. I'm GLAD it didn't get any air time.

We're better than that, & don't need to waste the brain time. As my 96 year old Grandmother would say, "They oughta be ashamed."

This is unbelievable! Now a statue of George Washington is offensive? This politically correct garbage is getting out of hand! What's next? Cover up the Statue of Liberty because she was made in France?

NAACP: National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

The NAACP's mission is "to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination".

But this excludes white people. That in itself is racist.

Anonymous said...

There is only one reason the NAACP would pull a stunt like this: because good and decent people let them get away with it. Where was our outrage when NAACP intimidated Hallmark? They are using the same racketeering tactics employed by the Rainbow/Push Coalition. Enough is enough. I hope the NAACPs funds dry up.

heidianne jackson said...

leticia, the vast majority of leaders in the naacp do not believe a minority can be racist - that's reserved primarily for we miserable, horrible white people. i didn't find any evidence that they've done it before, as ducky allegates, however even if they did, so what? does that make it right?

political correctness is killing this country. especially since things only seem to be politically correct if they are denegrating or dismissing this country.

Thanks for all your comments...astonishing, isn't it...that AMERICANS would cover up their first president. Absolutely sickening.

MUSTANG says it all: WE let them get away with it ONLY because of political correctness...but, you know, this isn't a Christian thing, so we needn't cower like we do when CHristian bashing happens....since when did being PATRIOTIC become STUPID?

Seems to me it's only been since 9/11....anybody agree? It was after 9/11 that Tom Brokaw and PHil Donahue had an "oh, so erudite and enlightening" discussion of why they don't need to wear flag pins to be patriotic (as if anybody does?)....those who wore them were, by inference, just those fly-over country bumpkins..

Suddenly, with libs, American can do NO RIGHT....and THAT, my friends, is what our teachers are teaching our kids/young adults these days.
AND, it used to be they at least got a pro-American foundation early on in school but now they start at 4 years old.....slavery's taught at 7 or 8 (was it Susannah here who said she heard little ones saying how awful America is because of slavery?)

has there BEEN another country which TEACHES ITS PEOPLE TO HATE IT?

Tell me, has there?

Good point about Geo Washington.
My dear ol' wonderful America-loving dad died 17 years ago and I am so glad he doesn't have to see what liberals have done...and my German husband was more patriotic than SO many Americans I know...he died 16 months ago and he'd be appalled at how much worse things have become even since then.

Seems to me possible too much is being made out of this. As someone pointed out the statue is right behind the podium and it doesn't have to be hatred of George Washington that motivated covering it up, just not wanting the distraction of a statue peering over the speaker's head all the time. I'd rather think of it that way anyway.

Z,

I'm more optimistic again now that I have seen and heard Alan West on C-Span at a Congressional Tea Party Coalition Rally.

Intelligent, thoughtful, dignified, articulate, makes a good appearance. Knows a great deal and has it all at his fingertips. Very quick on his feet. Seems positive, straightforward, honest, direct, clear and wonderfully lacking in sarcasm, snideness and contempt. Focused on possible remedies instead of the usual complaints about symptoms.

In sort Alan West is a MAN -- something rare in politics today.

It will be interesting -- and doubtless infuriating -- to see what scurrilous tactics the Marxicats and the enemedia will use to do everything in their power to destroy him.

Alan West is everything Obama is not. If the professional calumnists, muckrakers and mudslingers can't bring him down, he might TRULY be The One who could bring America back.

Keep an eye on Alan West, and pray that he's all he appears to be. There IS hope out there.

Freethinke, (You left the "r" off the end of your name, BTW) What would happen if Alan West ran against Obama in the next election? Who would all those people who vote based only on color do?

Who would all those people who vote based only on color do?

They'd vote on ideology then. The vast majority of voters in that particular community still lean heavily towards Communism -- or some variant thereof -- because they have a deep seated belief that this country owes them a living.

Remember Clarence Thomas, Condoleezza Rice and even RINO Colin Powell are not considered "really" black, because they are not Marxicrats.

Therefore, my guess is that Alan West would do poorly in the black community in a contest between himself and Obama.

HOWEVER, West would probably fare better if the contest were between himself and someone like Chuck Schumer, Joe Lieberman Barbara Boxer or Rahm Emmanuel.
