Leon Russell.........it's about time!

One of my very favorite musicians, LEON RUSSELL, is finally being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next month.  Elton John's is helping induct him.  If you haven't bought their amazing CD THE UNION yet, do, it is fabulous.

Be still, my silly heart.  Congratulations, Leon.  You deserve it.
Your fan, Z
BY THE WAY, GEEEZ READERS, WHO WOULD YOU NOMINATE FOR THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME?  GOT  A FAVORITE?

I've always been a fan of Leon, too. Back in the 70's, I owned every album he had yet recorded. I saw him in concert once in an outdoor venue, and I was disappointed. Not in him, but in the sound system. Either it was too loud or too distorted because no one could make out the words he was singing. Of course I knew all his songs by heart so that wasn't too bad.

Yay for him.

A true classic. Seen him a few times dating back to 1971 and yes, one of my favorites.

Glad he made it.

Can't say I was ever much of a fan but I remember everyone seemed to be listening to "Back to the Island" back in the day. Great song.

Can this be true???

AOW, I thought that was common knowledge because I've heard that before many times. It sure looks true.
Hey, there had to be SOME reason he picked her :-)

Mark, isn't he fabulous...how cool you got to see him. Ya, I know all the words, too...!

Anonymous, I don't have a crush on the guy, but he does float my music boat...along with Marvin Gaye, Billy Eckstein, The Band, ..and several others.

Common Sense, I'm glad he made it, too! Finally.

Ducky, I remember that song; I'd forgotten it. I'll bet you remember A SONG FOR YOU, he did that really well.and DELTA LADY, they're worth a listen at YouTube.

I meant to add a sentence on the post and I will now, but for those who don't read all the way down (Yes, I MEAN YOU!! :-)...

WHAT MUSIC PERSON OR GROUP WOULD YOU NOMINATE FOR THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME?

Ticker said...

Ahahha, Delta Lady, a song worth remembering. Congrats to Leon and yep, it's about time.

Lily Pons, of course, who else?

Who would I induct, hmmm ...

Mary Wells

Martha Reeves

Laura Nyro

Earl Hooker

early influences -- The Mississippi Sheiks

Kinda tough to nominate when I don't know who's in there already.

I assume Chuck Berry and Elvis are in there. If not they should be.

Billy Joel, Credence Clearwater, Tina Turner.

Z, Billy Eckstein was great but, Rock N Roll?

woohoo who hasnt been inducted yet?..lol

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!!

Mark said...

I don't know who's already in either, but I'd nominate Styx, Mike Finnigan, and Kansas.

Trekkie4Ever said...

Z, forgive me, but I have never heard of him.

I would induct, Ozzy Osbourne, because I am still a huge fan, umm...Sebastian Bach, because I loved Skid Row and he has a fantastic voice. Maybe even Steven Tyler of Aeorosmith.

Anonymous said...

Oh Christ...another stupid and silly diversion from reality.

Really...who gives a shit if he's inducted? Far too many I think. Rather than worshipping these "Motown" products...how about inducting a Malkin into an "American" loving Hall of Fame?

What crap. Next thing we know is Lindsey Lohan and Charlie Sheen are seen as worthy of fame / recognition.

(((Thought Criminal))) said...

I'm rather anti-Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. People and groups that should have been inducted when they started the dang thing aren't in there yet and lots of people or groups that are in there shouldn't be at all, and certainly not ahead of those that aren't. It's a sick joke, mostly.

Acts that never had a hit song at all are in there. Heck, people who have never even performed music in any genre, much less recorded anything are inducted in there.

Z said...

Ticker, I knew you'd like this stuff :-) Hurrah! Delta Lady, what amazing instrumentals...!

Ducky..Mary WElls...sublime. I have a friend named Mary Wells and she's about sick of me singing MY GUY every time she comes near! :-)

Pris, I said they 'float my music boat', not that they'd all be for a Rock and Roll museum! You're right...Eckstein for that museum? ..naaa ...
Oh, but you helped me remember another GREAT favorite male singer...Dick Haymes...couldn't remember his name earlier.

Leticia, Ozzy lives across the street from my sis :-) She says the family's pretty nice!

Everybody: whether they've been inducted or not is too tough to find out; sorry I didn't stipulate:
Just tell us who YOU think should be there, whether they're there or not!!

Beamish, who's in there who hasn't made music?

Anonymous; I've encouraged you for so long to start your own blog! DO IT, you'd enjoy it and you wouldn't have to keep coming by here and appearing quite so negative.

THanks, everybody, I've really enjoyed this NON political post, it's important to have one of us bloggers have something NOT as serious and downright terrorizing in our blogosphere once in a while.

Gotcha Z, I'll keep that music boat afloat. My folks had Eckstein and Haymes records. My Mom liked Andy Russell (I think that's right), my Dad liked the Ink Spots
and Harry James (trumpet).

They both loved Sinatra, and I did too and still do. My Dad taught me to dance to Sinatra records.

I graduated to Rock N Roll during the 50's.

Anon, you really have to lighten up once in awhile, or your head will explode. Do you ever have fun?

Pris, check this out...is that Betty Hutton with Andy Russell?...Hutton the goofball actress? I think it IS! Too bad she didn't stay serious and just sing, I've never been a fan. I've never liked the Roz Russell/Betty Hutton women's kinds of rolls..

Here's another Andy Russell...i looked him up because it's rare I haven't at least heard a singer's name let alone heard their voice...this guy I'd never heard of at all. The video belong is a tad lounge-lizardy because it's more in the day of the Las Vegas HOtel shows, a little later in his career...but he sure does have a good voice... thanks for introducing him to me. ONe of the biggest thrills of my life was singing in a club and being told to please come to a certain table, somebody wanted to meet me, and it was an INK SPOT! This was about 17 years ago, I think.......I was introduced and he told me how much he liked my voice and style...I about passed out! Then, I thought I'd run to the phone to tell Dad but he'd just passed away; one of those really sad "damn..." moments, you know?

Beamish, who's in there who hasn't made music?

Jann Wenner, managing editor of Roling Stone magazine is in there. He's also one of the most influential decision makers at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on who gets inducted and who does not.

And so, acts like the the B-52s, Chicago, Deep Purple, KISS(!), Electric Light Orchestra, Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Jethro Tull, Bachman Turner Overdrive, The Moody Blues, Linda Ronstadt, etc. are not in there, and even if they ever are finally inducted, they got there well after Wenner inducted himself and acts like Bobby Bland (who?).

And then there's acts inducted that weren't or aren't even rock musicians. Who, in the 1970s, wanted to rock and tossed on an Ike and Tina Turner or ABBA record?

Nonsense.

Z, you met an Ink Spot? Wow, that's incredible. Dad used to dance around to the Ink Spots with my baby sister in his arms.
I'm going to check out your links.

Beamish, how old were you in the 70's? I tossed on Ike and Tina Turner records. If you love to dance to Rock N Roll, that's what you do

But then, you never saw my sister and I do an impersonation of Tina and the girls. Ha,Ha.
But Tina had longevity without Ike. That means something.

Rock N Roll began in the fifties, you may not like it, but it did. Life existed before you were born too. Imagine that!

I'm sure your favorites will be inducted at some point. It really isn't important anyway. This is just for fun.

Beamish, how old were you in the 70's?

'Twas a particularly cold night in December 1969. Mom and Dad slept pretty close that night, and on the 20th anniversary of the admission of Hawai'i as a state in the USA, I leapt into this world head first and within weeks was jammin' in my crib to the newly released Led Zeppelin III album when Dad played it. It would be a few years before I could effectively articulate to Dad that he should TURN UP the phonograph because Baby Beamish LOVED it. Frijid Pink? Blue Cheer? Black Sabbath? Music was colorful back then. ;)

Led Zeppeling, Metallica, Stevie Ray vaughan, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (when Dio was in the group). At some point, I've thought each of those was the greatest.

Deep Purple's not in? How did that happen?

ABBA used to be a big guilty pleasure for me. Eventually I stopped feeling guilty.

My favorite singer from the 50's is Bobby Darin. Everyone is familiar with "Dream Lover", "Splish Splash" and "Mack the Knife" (my personal all time favorite) But there is a wealth of other songs he recorded that keep one entertained for hours.

Another favorite is Gladys Knight and the Pips. I've always said, "When I grow up, I want to be a Pip."

I'm still hoping to grow up one of these days.

The world's largest ball of twine is in my home state of Kansas, however, the world's largest ball of twine rolled by one man is in Minnesota. The one in Cawker City, Kansas has been added to by the residents of the town since the man who rolled it died. It is now the largest, but with an asterisk.

" I've never liked the Roz Russell/Betty Hutton women's kinds of rolls."

HUH?

Rosalind Russell did Craig's Wife, Night Must Fall, The Front Page, Sister Kenny, The Women, Mourning Becomes Electra, Auntie Mame and many others. Also Leonard Bernstein's Wonderful Town as well as Auntie Mame on Broadway. Her range was astonishingly broad. She could do everything from "Screwball Comedy" to Greek Tragedy. There was nothing she couldn't do. What didn't you like of her many, greatly varied, highly distinguished performances?

As for Betty Hutton, who recently died of colon cancer at age 87, she was a unique piece of Americana the like of which we'll never see again. Didn't you see Annie Get Your Gun and The Greatest Show On Earth? Betty Hutton never pretended to be a "serious" actress, although she could act credibly enough when it was required. Betty really should be categorized as one of America's foremost novelty singers. She was a one-woman answer to Spike Jones. Many of Hollywood's most distinguished composers wrote especially to showcase her unique talents -- Johnny Mercer and Hoagy Carmichael among them.

In my opinion, as a lifelong advocate and fanatically devoted fan of classical music, Betty Hutton singing His Rocking Horse Ran Away, Murder! He Said! and Arthur Murray Taught Me Dancing in a Hurry rate very high in the ranks of true comic genius.

But, as has oft been said there's no accounting for taste. Everybody has a right to like and dislike whatever they want, even if they're wrong. ;-)

NOTE to Z: I do post anonymously now and then -- most often because I forget to sign the post --, but sometimes deliberately, I admit. I do this, because I want whatever ideas may be expressed to be judged on their own merits and not through the filter of prejudice, animosity and vicious antagonism some put up for peculiar reasons of their own -- reasons I could never hope to understand.

All that aside, I want you to know did not write the negative post that seems to have been ascribed to me. Just to clarify I am talking about the one that begins "Oh Christ! ..." That's not my style, even though I do dislike Rock 'n Roll intensely, as I've told you many times back in the days when we enjoyed a friendly personal correspondence.

If you really do know who is posting here -- whether they sign their names or not -- you should be able to verify my denial.

Thanks.

Despite being explicitly asked by Z to never post here again, I feign tone deafness to take full advantage of the opportunity posting anonymously affords me so I can continue to post links to and cut-n-pastes from anti-Semitic / white supremacist / Holocaust denial websites and sock puppet pretend there's a whole crowd of anonymous posters out there that agree with me.

I will continue to presumptuously defy a request to never post a comment on this blog again because continuously posting Ron Paul quotes while mendaciously claiming to know nothing about him is just the tip of the iceberg (see, iceBERG - Jews sank the Titanic) on how far I'll go to let the truth be known that I'm a twit.

Z, If I ever INTENDED to insult you or anyone else, BELIEVE me you'd KNOW it.

When I see the out-and-out CRAP you positively COURT at this blog, and compare it to the way you treat me -- especially considering we spent YEARS corresponding and telephoning in a very friendly fashion while commiserating frequently over the dreadful way we and others were treated at FPM and elsewhere -- I can't believe what has happened to you. We were FRIENDS for Heavens sake, until you established this ridiculous blog.

After that you became an entirely different person. Why I'll never understand. I can only assume you've come under the spell of unsavory influences.

Loosing the abominable Beamish as an attack dog while you play the role of a pure, unjustly injured, unfairly imposed upon, utterly virtuous, good hearted, suffering soul is particularly despicable.

I have been stalked, mocked, insulted, harassed and persistently LIED about here, and YOU act as though I am at fault when I protest?

YOU MUST BE OUT OF YOUR FRIGGIN' MIND, LADY.

I've always been very sympathetic to you in all the travails you've had to endure, and yet you greet me with frosty politeness at best and overt contempt at worst.

Well, it's your blog, and believe me you're welcome to it. You are ungrateful, hypocritical, humorless, narcissistic, morally blind, rude and not very bright. What's more you consistently exhibit bad taste.

I'm sorry I wasted so much of my valuable time on you.

GOOD BYE!

FT, this rant is uncalled for. Z is still Z, the dear person she has always been, and none of the insulting names you try to ascribe to her.

I'm shocked you could even suggest such things.

She has made it clear to you and all of us, what she expects on her blog. You come on here and make demands as if you have the authority to do so. You do not, and neither do the rest of us.

It's like walking into her home and telling her how to run it. No on has the authority to do that except Z.

Friendship is not license to take advantage, or there is no friendship on your part. I'm sorry you can't see that.

With your name calling, you've gone too far, and it's for the best you are saying goodbye.
