Multiculturalism....good thinking and good writing

This post was written as a comment on my post below but I felt it needed to be read by many so I'm posting it as a blog post.  The author is Sam Huntington of  Praesidium Respublicae, where Sam and Hayden write brilliant pieces you should all read.

I think it is possible to value foreign culture and ethnicity without taking it to a multicultural extreme. We are not Mexicans, or Russians, or Japanese, or any muddled hyphenation of all of the above. We are Americans. We are neither Catholic Americans, nor Methodist Americans … and we should not be Moslem Americans, either.

All of us should strive to be Americans; people who are more similar than not. Even if we are always arguing, —like a family, we remain tied to one another. Well, unless some of us have become psychopathic and have adopted an agenda to destroy Eden, replacing it with one of the so-called Stans.

I don’t think most Americans of the Moslem faith pine for returning to their Middle Eastern or African roots … but I do think that if we reach a point where the majority becomes willing to let minority interests push them back, then we could find ourselves facing the exact same situation we find in France today. And by the way, should you not have noticed it, this has already begun over such issues as the so-called Victory mosque. What kind of American would insist upon building a mosque over the objections of so many? I think, “someone” who has a unique agenda and who doesn’t really care about America.

Thanks to Sam and Praesidium Respublicae for allowing me to publish this here.  Obviously, this doesn't only apply to Muslims!  This applies to all nationalities which come to America and don't want to be American, who resent learning English, who threaten, steal and expect entitlements from us.

I hope all my readers feel the same way as Sam does........if you do not, why?  Tell us.  Thanks.

agreed, I put them on my google reader recently.

"I think it is possible to value foreign culture and ethnicity without taking it to a multicultural extreme."

When a person has an extreme view of the world then everyone he sees that doesn't occupy that same part of the world is an extremist. That explains why so many people are considered extremist by extreme leftists like media and academic elites. Only in such an extreme discombobulated world can speaking out against the religion behind religious atrocities be worthy of accusations of bigotry and phobias. This is especially true when it is considered that the ones hurling the insults are Christophobes who are more comfortable blaming killings in Afghanistan on a remote North Florida nut-job than on the people swinging the clubs and pulling the triggers. What if a North Florida nut job killed a bunch of people because someone in Afghanistan burned a Bible? Under the double standard of all-cultures are-equally-valid, wouldn't we then conclude then that the murderous actions of the North Florida nut-job were warranted and blame the Afghan nut-jobs for burning a Bible? Of course if, and only if, extremists actually mean what they say. But they don't, and the people they consider extreme for pointing out their folly know it for it is so obvious for the unconvoluted undelusioned mind living in normalville.

Hope I didn't go off subject with my little rant.

Dan...great rant "the ones hurling the insults are Christophobes who are more comfortable blaming killings in Afghanistan on a remote North Florida nut-job than on the people swinging the clubs and pulling the triggers."

Amen to that.
but, you in that Extremist liberal mindset, we can't be right about anything...it's always about championing and excusing the enemy who's only an enemy, after all, because we made him one :-) (sarcasm there..LOTS of it, of course)

You see this turning around at all?

------------------

So the minority is held hostage to the majority? In this case the anti-Mosque crew isn't even a majority but no difference.

The statement doesn't even acknowledge a basic Western tent concerning the legitimacy of government, that it protect minority rights.

Yeah, a brilliant essay from Huntington.

I find it amusing that the right is so self satisfied. Can I be an "American" in Sam's "America". My family has extensive roots in the left wing labor movement in the Merrimack valley, does that make them unamerican? In Sam's world of ignorance, yes.
What other "tests" does the aspiring American have to pass? What parts of the culture can people reject as inferior? None, the founders achieved perfection? Please.

Regarding the Afghanistan incident. Now, who publicized the moron's uaran burning? Why our good friend and ally Karzai, of course.

Many in Afghanistan can be roused to riot on little pretext because they want us out of there. It is critical to realize that Karzai pulled this stunt immediately after the publicity of the American killing squads. We paraded our civilization by going out and selecting random civilians to kill and posing like Ernest Hemingway for a trophy photo.

So unwind it all and let me know who was civilized and who was uncivilized. What we do know is that the right will consistently have the blinders on.

Z said...

Ducky, you are so right...we are so so much less civilized in America than those barbarians in sandals and dresses marching in the sand wishing us death because one lousy creep burned one lousy copy of the koran. ONe in 300,000,000,000. Mea Culpa, Ducky...mea culpa (lots of sarcasm here)
we must never ever ever criticize islamists......but ALWAYS expect to hear the worst about US, right?

And yes, those few awful AMerican kids who did horrific things are examples of ALL AMERICANS when you hate us this much; we know that, Ducky :-)
Daniel Pearl can be beheaded by monsters but let some soldiers who're exhausted go nuts and commit horrific crimes and we need to tell the whole world in another mea culpa and excuse the killers of OUR PEOPLE because it's OUR FAULT...man, can AMerica NEVER be through apologizing in your world, Ducky?

Re "Sam's America"..you don't REALLY think that real AMericans don't find your relatives American because of leftwing opnions, this is a joke, right? YOu simply can't be that agenda-driven...or that deaf to what Sam was saying? Not possible

Sam Huntington's absolutely right...his is the America most Americans want to have again... and, OH, YES, when you learn the difference of MAJORITY and MINORITY and DEMOCRACY, come back and we'll talk :-)

They really do have a brilliant blog and I also recommend it.

Spot-on, no doubt about it. We must unite as a nation and quit allowing petty differences to destroy what took so long to build.

And most importantly, we cannot be so lenient and tolerant of people coming to this nation and demanding us to accommodate their interests over ours.

Keep insulting people of ignorance, LSD.
1. I'm glad you're finally realizing perfection of society is not possible.
2. Would your social democracy be perfect, though?
3. Wait! that's been tried and failed
4. Therefore are you ignorant as well? Or just in total denial? Or is too much baseball detrimental to your intellect?

You and your family are as American as every one else if you want to be reassured on my ignorant position.

You have reduced the question to a Multiculturalism!!
and from Multiculturalism, you have packaged it in the Good American and Ignorant American parcel.

If you want to continue the question in this narrow corridor, why not, continue, if you find a result, please give the remedy to all so that each nation can apply it to her specific case.

A bit off topic, but chalk it up to a public service announcement:

For those concerned about windblown radiation from the Japanese reactor disaster reaching the U.S., here's a simple way to test the health of your atmosphere:

1. Open a bag of microwave popcorn and set it in the center of your kitchen table.

2. If it starts popping, you're screwed.

No need to thank me.

FB;

I remember in the 80's in the FAC (Faculté) we were asked if we are in the Socialist CAMP or Capitalist CAMP.

I was a young research man and I preferred always to lunch with the students of my age.

Islamism was going to borne by the arrival of Khomeiny in IRAN.

There were always the Muslims, but they were never counted.

So the world was divided between pro socialist (USSR) and anti socialist (pro-American),

or LEFT and RIGHT.

You don't think that the labels are changed only, and the actors are always left and right.

I remember that Khomeini was saying always (the anti-GOD or Communist is finished), the world is first divided between GOOD (Islamism) and SATAN (Americ), then, it is our JIHAD to defeat the SATAN (AMERIC).

Now, how the Philosophers have mutilated the political head of the problem and reduced it to Multiculturalism.

and WHY do we insult Multiculturalism, I like, Turkish Restaurant, Chinese yearly celebration, Japanese sushi, Cuban SALSA, FRENCH CON-CON, Texan singers, African Jump dance, Tunisian COUSCOUS, GREEK DOLMA, ARAB HORSES, and GULF eagles, Indian YOGA, Italian Minestrone, Spanish Corida when the cow follows the mass, and etc. etc.

Unfortunately, even the Multicolor flowers will fade when they get the political dimensions.

What you seem unable to acknowledge is that the Quran burning was simply a catalyst, z. There was not so much as a demonstration in any other country, even Pakistan.

However, as a reaction to the barbaric behavior of American troops, which you can't even acknowledge is possible, Karzai got things all wound up and people died. So maybe you can explain again why we are there.

We have had minority rule in the US for years. See gay marriage, environmentalism, (pick your favorite far-left cause). These are issues the majority of the public do not support be we have had shoved down our throat.

Duck, why wouldn't the majority rule? Who would? We should let the minority decide what the majority should do? You have said some dumb stuff before...

Z said...

Chuck, that was about the dumbest, wasn't it.
I guess the minority's supposed to screw us...oh, WAIT A MINUTE! They are!! :-(

Ducky, dear Ducky....
Of course Karzai started this whole thing....and these people go insane over ONE koran by ONE American...what part do you not get?

And WHO can't acknowledge our troops behaved in a barbaric way?
WHO? Please let me know. geeeZ

Beamish, that jiffy pop thing is HILARIOUS...Mustang, very good, too!

Ducky,

A catalyst for what? Muslims in Afghanistan to leave their Better Homes and Gardens picture perfect hovels and go on an arson and killing spree on their breaks from their internet telecommuting stock broker jobs?

What happens when two Qurans are burned?

Z said...

Beamish, I'm glad you asked that question.....I wondered the same thing.
Meanwhile, no churches can be built there, bibles are snuck in by what I'm hearing is 10,000 requests a day.....
but let one koran get burned by one nut.......and WE are the "barbarians"?
ridiculous
