Tax the Olympians?

Olympians make $25,000 per GOLD MEDAL, $15,000 for a SILVER MEDAL, $10,000 for the BRONZE MEDAL... and they pay taxes on them.  35% taxes.

Olympic champs shouldn't have tax on medals.Unless@barackobama believes they didn't earn them, someone else did that

Do you think they should pay taxes on their wins?

(is GOLD MEDALIST Nathan Adrian TERRIFIC, or WHAT?!)

And I could have wept when John Orozco flubbed the pommel horse...he's so good.  DARN.   Man, was THAT sad. ;-(

THINK THEY SHOULD BE TAXED?

It's absurd! I might understand if these were professional athletes like some countries send, but they are not (although some go on to become professionals).

That said, the olympics has become much to political, not in terms of national pride...that's a good thing. The olympic games are fraught with political organizers, judges and so forth.

It is what it is, though, and I don't think they should be taxed.

Here's what's behind this: The US is one of the few countries that tax overseas income.

The greedy hand knows no limits.

Sure they should and Rubio is an ass. They used facilities to train that were paid for by tax dollars and we ALL pay taxes for our work.

He'll, no, they shouldn't be taxed!

Silverfiddle is right. As an expat, I know only too well how the IRS picks the pockets of citizens living outside the couuntry even if they work for a foreign company.

Joe doesn't think they're professionals.

Please stop.

I am surprised that they are taxed at the highest marginal rate. That's either wrong or indicates how much they make.

The best way to get around this would be to fashion the medals out of base metal thinly-plated with gold, or silver -- or make them of plastic made to look like precious metals.

This would in no way diminish the PRESTIGE of having been RECOGNIZED as "the best," but it sure would eliminate the TAXABILITY, wouldn't it?

A medal is a SYMBOL of high achievement. No one who wins one of these things is going to SPEND the gold or silver or add it to their INVESTMENT portfolio. Instead it will be "retired" -- taken out of circulation to sit in a cabinet forever as a reminder of one incident of glorious triumph.

Let's use the precious metals to BACK our CURRENCY instead of WASTING this precious, finite resource on SYMBOLS that have no practical use in the workaday world.

To put a DOLLAR AMOUNT on extraordinary, possibly-unique feats of skill or demonstrations of creative intelligence is actually an INSULT.

To TAX these symbols of rare and wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime accomplishments is OBSCENE.

Whenever, wherever and however it may be possible we have a moral obligation to CHEAT the STATE by BEATING THEM at THEIR OWN GAME.

Make the Olympic Medals out of PLASTIC.

THAT'LL fix our greedy Galtian Masters in Dee Cee!

Hard to believe our government taxes Olympic medal winnings. I understand taxing endorsement earnings and income, but awards for winning an Olympic medal? The sacrifice Olympic athletes make, the support their families and sponsors contribute, should not be penalized with taxation should they win an Olympic medal.

The medals are primarily alloy, FT.

Inadvertently accurate typo. It pummeled him all right.

I see Lib is already practicing if Rubio is the VP pick.
I think we should tax him for making asinine comments.
Not our athletes.

We should make a list of things government doesn’t tax. It will be a far shorter list than the things they do tax. I keep wondering why we need government’s help to spend our money.

Joe, it is too political...as is everything else.

SF...and Conservative on Fire...I go through a situation with taxes overseas every single year...
I never thought of this angle because it doesn't really SEEM like 'overseas income' but you're right...

Elbro...BIG time pro! $$$

Liberlmann..we know "they didn't do this on their own"
Let's see you get up at 4 AM and practice all day and know you have this huge goal which can only come every 4 years.
I'm not sure you realize what very hard work is.

Mr AOW..thanks for coming by!
Hell no, is right!

Ducky, they are not all pros...and thanks for fixing the typo; I was stunned you actually read the whole post.

FT..I think this has far less to do with the medals...they don't tax that, but they get that cash.

FW...I was so surprised to hear this, too!

Lisa, good one!

Louis...it never ends, does it. Let's hope that we can turn this country around in a good direction when Americans are certain about what's ahead and know they won't be taxed or "obamacare'd" to death!

Come on, guys, cool it. There is no reason to tax someone for a non-monetary award. In the case of gold and silver, it is easy to calculate a value, and the IRS will not miss a chance at such easy pickings. However, as a republic with democratic principles, we can change our law to accommodate letting the kids have their gold, and keep it too.

If the medal winners are able to garner rich endorsement contracts, then we will take part of that in taxes. I think that is enough.

I also think we should not tax lottery winners, game show winners, and nice guys like me.

Since so many of the winners are non-white I'd expect y'all to be overjoyed with this.

If we taxed at the libs like Libturd for stupidity and for stupid remarks we could pay off the National debt. Biden and Pelosi could have made a huge dent in the debt just in the past 30 days. Libturd, well, there is no hope for him.
No cure for stupidity.

I'd say we start with the Military being exempt from income taxes first. The pay is so low in the beginning years...some of our finest have to get food stamps!

Then we can go on to these fine athletes who get gold painted medals.

No more taxes and certainly not on Olympic medals. This is insane!

Z,
The silliness of the whole argument is that the government gives money to Olympic athletes to make itself feel superior. But then it taxes their "gift." What a joke. Don't give money to look like you're beneficial to the American people. Don't give money if you are going to take it away. Government at its finest.

Z said...

Imp....I actually do like your idea about our military, but so many would play on that; how retroactive would it be, etc etc... sad.
People aren't the same as they once were, with more dignity and honor.

Law & Order....excellent point. "Aren't we so giving?" and then tax the gift.
I guess the gov't could say "listen, we're just taxing you on the roads we let you drive on to get to practice!"

Was obama taxed on his Nobel Prize of a million? I don't know.

Then, there is the question of what are taxes on income from out of country?

Then how much of that medal income can be balanced against costs. The costs would certainly include training costs, uniforms, travel to and from all those training classes during the year, and any other expenses incurred as a part of either preparing for or attending the events.

I don't think you'd have to pay a CPA all that much to make the whole thing a wash, or better yet, the IRS Owes You money because of your expenses.

Then you got this going on.

In my opinion, Life in the USA is max ironic, hypocritical, and absurd.

How long do intelligent caring people (yes, this doesn't include libtards) put up with this?

I personally believe at Least 60% of the revenue collected by the Fed is stolen. Outright stolen.
Mostly by federal employees and their connected entities.

Kid, what a link! IMagine?
We're so incompetent in this country any more that it won't be long before we implode from SOMETHING...either terrorists coming in across the completely loose border (the lie about our being SO MUCH BETTER covered since Obama is just that, a BIG LIE, according to those on the ground and who're TRYING to get Napolitano to STOP lying and help them)...
Or our kids aren't trained enough to read IN HIGH SCHOOL!...
or our economy's falling apart and nobody has the guts to SAY SO and DO something meaningful about it that the people just might not like (don't take away their entitlements!)
Or out morality is so shot half our kids will be born without dads in a few years and we all know how that's worked out...
etc etc

And the left, responsible for most of this, will be saying "WHAT HAPPENED?" when it actually hits THEM somehow.

that IRS link says a LOT.
And consider MEdicare fraud $$
GSA conventions $$$
etc etc...

Kid said...

Z, Exactly. All that and more.

Most of the federal employees sit around on very fat salary, benefits, and pension programs, or outright stealing money and most of them are looking at Porn all day.

SEC, GSA, Today in the news - Pentagon employees being admonished for watching too much porn. (They could shut it off if they wanted)

Sounds a lot like Rome in the end days?

AND

the Most Dangerous position to be in is Number One, because you've got a lot of hungry determined people/countries/agendas constantly nipping at your heels.

This country right now does not have what it takes to stay number 1. Not from the top down or the bottom up. Exceptions for everything, but the good folks do not outweigh the bad apples anymore by a long shot, not where is counts.

"This country right now does not have what it takes to stay number 1. Not from the top down or the bottom up. Exceptions for everything, but the good folks do not outweigh the bad apples anymore by a long shot, not where is count"

For some reason, the left likes it this way. Bring all the rich down to their knees so we're one Big Box store from LA to NYC......no more lovely mom-and-pop businesses because they can't afford to BE in business...
No more optimism...I don't care HOW many times Obama talks in glowing terms about America; I'm a believer in ACTS, not WORDS.

Sam, ya...well, I'm about done listening to Ray Stevens sing about America, but I get your drift!
By the way, your piece at AOW's truly was excellent.

Rita, forgot to mention that your comment is SO FUNNY! :)
