Sunday Faith Blog

This isn't really much about faith but it's been on my mind and I thought I'd discuss it here today.

I think the Interfaith service commemorating the Boston tragedy was held too early.
I hear the media talking about "starting the healing process now" and I think that's a mile too early.

I think Americans are afraid to grieve and I think that's very, very unhealthy.  I think it's like putting a lid on a boiling pot and being surprised when it finally overflows.  Let the water boil, let the tears come, don't be afraid of feeling bad;  feeling bad is normal.   It's almost as if we've been led to believe normal isn't good if it hurts. The dead deserve our grief.  The maimed deserve our sadness for them.

There will be a time in the near future for all to join in a service in Boston where people can remember and memorialize, once the dust has settled and the private grieving is settling in.

Meanwhile, pray for Sean Collier's family, the 26 year old cop who was murdered.  Pray for Donohue, the cop who's trying to recover and for his family.  Pray for the Chinese family who lost their precious daughter.  Pray for the dad who brought his family to cheer him on and lost his 8 year old beloved son.  Pray for the young man with legs now missing beneath his knees and so many others who died or were maimed for life.

And pray for yourself.  This hit not only those mentioned above and not only the city of Boston, but it hit all Americans who love this country and those of us old enough to remember when it didn't occur to us to think such terrible things could happen to innocent people on a beautiful day watching a Marathon.

Be good to yourself....get your mind on happy, beautiful things.

".........he maketh me to lie down in green pastures, he restoreth my soul."  23rd Psalm

Find your metaphorical pasture.......Amen.

Lets talk of Christ Poverty, Victimology and Terrorism.

When we talk about Christ he came to a modest family, in an occupied country and advocated peace. He did
not cry out for vengeance and opened his doors to all.

The terrorists were not poor. They suffered no real persecution in the USA. They smoked pot and were suburbanites. Their faith and political types turned privileged
into criminals.

No one is more noble of heart and spirit as a "true" Christian. True
Christians are bedrocks of their community ho help the needy because
it is the calling of Christ.

Just something to ponder.

Can we now stop with the poverty causes terrorism bit.

I absolutely agree, Z!

Hold funerals, sure. But wait until some of the worst grieving has been worked through before even trying putting what happened behind you.

I know a lot about grief: the loss of my parents and the loss of my beloved cousin like a brother to me. Two of the deaths were sudden -- totally unexpected.

I lost another beloved cousin to murder back when I was in high school.

The grieving process cannot be forced into a time line OR into a particular method.

Right now, I'm reading a wonderful book, a memoir by Becky Aikman: Saturday Night Widows. Right now, I'm reading a library copy, but the book is so good that I'm going to buy my own hard copy. The book is peppered with humor, but it also contains much wisdom.

Ed Bonderenka said...

Well, those two comments leave not much else to say.
I am, no I guess I'm not, surprised that a liberal on FB I went to high school with, challenged my asserttion that they were radical muslims and that this was an "outreach" of their faith. How could I know that their religion informed them to do this?
Well, it just now occurs to me that Christians reach out to the world with food banks and "bowery" missions.
Muslims reach out with terrorism.
In general.

I find the idea that I need to grieve alongside people who were not even a week ago blaming people of my political stripe and religious beliefs for the bombings utterly repulsive.

Yes, it is horrible that innocent people were killed and maimed, but serious efforts were made to have people direct their anger and outrage at people who had absolutely not a goddamned thing to do with the bombings - right-wing evangelical Christians.

Do you really want to mourn with people who are pissed off that they can't smear you personally as a killer?

I don't. And won't. Leave that bullshit for the pansy ass leftists like Mitt Romney.

As I recently said at another blog and indicative of my contention that there is no way for a lot of people to put what happened behind them...

My heart goes out to those so terrible injured at the Boston Marathon.

The very thought of double amputees! Their suffering and the care they will need in the long term.

As I already mentioned, I have great concern and empathy for the grievously injured and their caregivers, particularly the caregivers who are family members. Who is helping them? Who will help them as the years grind on?

It really does gall me that Tsarnaev's needs (medical care, help with activities of daily living, etc.) will be met indefinitely if he should be permanently disabled. Permanent disability is a real possibility if what I read this morning is true: leg and neck wounds. The maimed at the bomb sites will likely get less attention and, more importantly, less help.

Beamish,

And we who might be termed as part of that group of Christians should never forget that!

Have those who were trying to cast blame in that direction asked us for forgiveness? I haven't heard any such apology.

Of course, mustang and z experienced the tears that were shed at the service. I assume the tears had nothing to do with grieving.

Beak, if you weren't at the service then maybe you should zip it for just a bit.

Or maybe it's best we all grieve alone since it's obvious that even grieving together will bring out the detractors.
Or maybe we do have to spend time alone with it before its ready to merge in the collective memory.

(((Thought Criminal))) said...

Here's something for your "collective memory," Ducky:

When the Boston Marathon bombings first occured, YOU were on in front blaming mythological "right-wing radicals" for it.

The fundamental core of Christianity is that Jesus died for all men.
If we expect to be forgiven, we must be ready to forgive.

Pris said...

We are all mere mortals, and while we mourn for those Americans who died or are maimed for life, many of us are angry and not forgiving of those brothers who killed for the sake of killing!

God knows we're not perfect, and as hard as we try to be righteous, there are times we cannot reach that place.
This is one of those times IMO.

I think those in Boston who are celebrating the first responders, and the diligence of the police and those who discovered the culprits, are really displaying their relief that they are not still potential victims of these two young men. Who can blame them? Not me!

The radical Islamists are still at war with we so called infidels, and they will be for a long time.

Just another example of the numerous times you are wrong and ignorant.

The bombing had nothing to do with
patriot day or Oklahoma City. It was just a bunch of stoners who were radicalized at local mosques and by local lefties who turned them into victims.

Didn't the left promise us if we elected the messiah that these things wouldn't happen. It happened in the heart of liberal America not a redneck enclave.

How many other acts of terror did we dodge in the age of Obama. Did the Cairo apology and endless trying to avoid offending Muslims work.

You certainly didn't discount the possibility that right-wing Christians bombed the Boston Marathon. At least not long enough to prevent you from widely claiming such.

Z. I, also, think the weeping and rending of garments stuff was premature. Most of all, it was a photo-op for Barack Obama.

The side show with the ricin letters was interesting. When I heard that a US Senator from Mississippi was the target, I knew it had to be someone from Mississippi. You see, towns in Mississippi are generally small, and letters can probably be traced quickly. The biggest city available for posting a letter is Memphis, Tennessee.

Sure enough, the sender was an Elvis impersonator who lived in Corinth, Mississippi, about a two hour drive from Memphis. In retrospect I am surprised that this genius did not post the letter from Elvis' birth town, Tupelo, along with his Elvis promotional photo.

You gotta find some humor in the events of last week.

Jews ... Old Testament ... Wait a minute the Old Testament being part of the bible is the base of Christianity. Jesus Christ became a Jewish heretic by advocating for Christianity

Are there no hate filled pronouncements buried deep in the bowels of the religious documents of Judaism denouncing not only Jesus Christ as a false Messiah and the goyim beings on a lower level than swine?

Anonymous said...

Z,
I agree that we need to take some time and keep our perspective. The week has been filled with so much that it takes time to figure it all out. Chechyns? Really? Who saw that one coming? Homegrown terrorists? This is a real problem that will be more prevalent in the days, months, and years to come.

It will require that police agencies, at all levels, share intelligence to combat this latest trend in terrorism. I think the police agencies did a great job in this incident of sharing and working together to overcome interagency rivalry.

They certainly did a great job for a group of nearly retarded people.

Waylon said...

Occupied country? Which country would that be? In the time of Jesus Christ it was the time of the Roman Empire in which Christians were persecuted, we know that. Let's not forget hose assisting the Romans in this were the Jews. Recall that Saul of Tarsus was doing just that while on the road to Damascus. The trip on which he had a great awakening and recognizing the error of his ways and becoming a Christian.

My goodness, something in my suggestion sure set you off :-)
GO AHEAD, GRIEVE IN THE STREET, what do I care, Ducky? Go....corporate is good...populism, socialism...go grieve together..feel the love..group hug! GO FOR IT.

Bob, I laughed out loud when the Mississippi senator (Wickert or something?) was the first to receive the questionable mail and when Obama did, Jay Carney did a presser and only said "a senator also received a letter.." What, he didn't know his NAME? Or doesn't he like giving someone billing over his messiah, particularly a Republican!? As if he didn't know; and as if it wasn't important who the other recipient was? :-)

Beak, as a Jew, you speak better for Christ than a lot of Christians I know. God bless you for that. (not that I tell HIM what to do :-)!!!!!!!!!!!

Beamish...you can't make this stuff up.

It's not my attempt to distance the prophet (if you are talking about Jesus Christ) from his people, it's simple reality. You deny that Jesus Christ is considered a Jewish heretic, an outcast from the religion? Why would Christians be persecuted in the ancient Roman Empire and why would Jews have aided in that? You can't deny that Saul of Tarsus was on a mission to persecute Christians in Damascus when he had great awakening, can you? He later became known as the Apostle Paul in the Christian religion.

In recent years, many Christian groups have reconsidered their traditionally hostile attitude toward Judaism, which has in turn, led many liberal Jewish theologians to soften their attitudes toward Christianity ..."

Not bad for a bunch of jackasses, right? As for their lack of exposure to danger, one of them died and another is fighting for his life. I think that's evidence of dedication to the protection of the public that is admirable.

Yeah. The lowbrow beat cops that fired over 200 rounds of ammunition without hitting anything but houses and tree in Watertown first poured over images from CCTV video enhancement software. Or maybe those desk jockeys with the software keep the average cop IQ just above retarded.

You still have cops with bomb-search dogs on the scene BEFORE the blasts that turned up what?

They serve the poor and needy as the calling of the savior. They founded hospitals, orphanages and tended to the lost long before the age of MSWs.

They held the mighty and the weak accountable before god. Our individual rights flow from Christianity into our secular law.
Our cultural ethos and values flow

As stated Marx's obsessive hatred of Jews are evident in his scribblings.
He converted and remained pathologically obsessed with Jews at a level only exceeded by Nazis.

Many think the term the Jewish Question is a Nazi term. In fact Marx wrote about it and the Nazis merely added a final solution to Marx.

The greatest modern antisemites also tend to be Marxist Jews
Norman "Maoist" Finklestein, Shlomo
Sand and Noam Chomsky who swears he is an anarchist.

Comparison of Marxists to baboons is an insult to baboons who are a noble creature. I really could care
less if Marxists are offended. A genuine Jew views Marxists in the same manner a Black man views the KKK. When baboons complain about being compared to Marxists I will apologize to the baboons who are clearly more civilized and intelligent.
