Helen Frankenthaler

I was a fan.  May she rest in peace.

Magnificent painter. She was one of the few who was able to extend Pollock.

I hadn't realized she was married to MOtherwell for a time.
'extending Pollock" is an interesting way of putting it, yes.
She was always a favorite of mine, back to my college days.

Was she Pollock with a woman's sensibility.

How dare one ask these days.

Of course we can ask that :-)
His work was mostly like contemporary pointilism! Hers was lavish and languid, with more largesse somehow.
I think you make a good point.
It's like she extended his paintings by dropping water onto his wet canvases....

Interesting, but IMHO she was no Pierre Brassau.

Or Pavel Jerdanovitch for that matter.

I really loved her "Mountains and the Sea". It was so soft and relaxing just to look at.
Some of her other works where the colors were rather dark with no clear definition of boundaries were also some of my favorites.

I attempted to "copy" her style on some "works"(my friends called them messes and they probably were) but never quite succeed.

A few years ago I managed to collapse a shelf of paint in my garage and almost got the results that I was looking for and that would have perhaps even compared very favorably with her work.

Only bad thing, it was on the floor and not on a canvas. It was also one heck of a mess to get cleaned up trying to contain it from flowing onto the rough concrete of the driveway.

I shall stick to painting walls and such and leave other such works to those like Helen Frankenthaler.
