I've actually went on an energy saving initiative by installing CFL's throughout the house. I am nearly 80% completed.

The mercury content in these bulbs is but a trace. When you consider cutting back from 60 watts to 13, you notice immediately the discount in your electric bill.

Steve, did you know about how you have to dispose of them, all those other things on the talk?
Why would he be this convinced they're not the best idea...just to show the Left's disdain for looking for more energy sources?

Every lamp in our house is outfitted with these great energy-saving, low-heat-output, everlasting compact fluorescent bulbs. I've had 'em for four years already, and only one has burned out so far.

One of the soundest investments I've ever made.

Rush Limbaugh has been denigrating these products just because the environmental cases like them.

Rush is wrong.

Nevertheless, Representative Poe's main point is a good one. Congress has no business dictating to Americans about thee kind of household goods they can and cannot use.

Poe is a Republican from Texas by the way.

Since these are to be disposed of as hazardous waste, where are the millions of these things going to be put?

Does anyone here think the average person isn't just going to dump these in their trash? Years from now we'll be hearing about the high readings of mercury in underground water.

One bulb might have a trace, but thousands and millions of them? It just seems a penney wise and pound foolish to me.

I really hate the white light they put out. I much prefer the softer light of the incandescent bulbs.

Most important, the government should not be in the banning business. As usual they jump on the bandwagon because it's politically correct at the moment.

Wait for the lawsuit when little Johnny gets his hands on one, breaks it and cuts his hand.

Good for Rep. Poe! His point was PERFECTLY made, as is Rush's: These Democrats are after our freedom. They want to destroy our very way of life. Think I'm kidding or crazy? Ask yourself WHY it is that everything they are trying to do directly hurts the very same Americans they claim to love and "care" for.

The Dem plan for lowering gas prices is PAINFULLY stupid! They want to eliminate "tax giveaways to BIG OIL." Boy oh boy, THAT should lower the gas prices! Leftists live in a demon-haunted world that they know next to nothing about. It seems as though they are in a pitch black room swinging a bat wildly. Beats turning on that Chinese light bulb I guess.

Pointing out the absurdity of these ultra-expensive, IMPORTED light bulbs is what's known in baseball as playing small ball: Using everyday examples as teaching opportunities.

Most sane Americans have already hoarded boxes of real light bulbs because they DESPISE being lorded over by a bunch of leftist blithering IDIOTS who couldn't hit their own ass with both hands if given a road map!!

Instead of working immediately to lower the price at the pump by drilling for our own reserves, they represent to interests of anti-American radicals like George Soros, MoveOn, Teresa Hines-Scary and her Tides Foundation.

Steve H. I sure am glad that you've switched to the poison alternative. That leaves more real light bulbs for me to buy. Next I'll be hoarding weapons for the inevitable march on Washington to reclaim this country!

Well, Anon, we could say he's denigrating it because it's environmental, but that would be as silly as saying Conservatives don't care about our environment.

I'm glad they're saving you and Steve money, but Pris is right; Wait till little Johnny really hurts himself on a lightbulb. Of course, by then, the gov't will probably be paying not only for college and health care but for our individual lawyers in case we need defending, too!

Wait till a country's worth of lightbulbs with mercury and whatever else is in them which makes them so dangerous to handle adds up and we're faced with a dilemma almost as dumb as "Gee, we SHOULD have drilled ANWR back then!"..."Gee, we should never have thought these light bulbs were a good idea, NOW look what's come home to roost!"

I'll admit what'll have come home to roost might not be as bad as what we've got now for having to buy foreign oil like Republicans have been hankering for for years, but.....and, of course Poe is a Republican; Republians aren't the ones saying we have to eat less and drive different cars to avoid global warming, Obama is.

Morgan! We should be hording regular lightbulbs, shouldn't we~! I have NEVER been good at handling things that are dangerous and need 'proper discarding'....like shellac, etc. I can't even stand the dilemma of what to do with the dry Christmas tree every year after the holiday! Oh, will THIS be a pain in the neck with little redeeming qualities.

I've just got to buy a weapon.

Did you hear the disdain in the voice introducing Poe and watch Dick Durbin's antics behind him as he speaks? Such respect the Left has.......they can't even listen to anything they don't agree with....that must be why the global change nuts at the 'world conference' in Bali a few months back didn't ALLOW the alternative point of view in spite of the thousands of scientists who've signed saying humans do NOT cause global change, including Monckton, who had worked WITH Gore and finally woke up.

oh, brother.

This guy is absolutely brilliant! I wonder if we've got anyone so outspoken in our parliament. America may be suffering under the left but at least you've got people like Rep. Poe to stand up and speak out the truth...still!

Z I swear to G-d these nanny state sob's are going to work my last good nerve VERY soon!

The motto of our early republic was "don't tread on me!"
It might as well have been, "mind your own damned business!"

I prefer the latter. Our freedom is under direct assault from the left and people are missing the forest for the trees! Instead of replying to the light bulb idiocy by arguing the merits of phophor bulbs vs. incandscent (sp?), we should be responding to the political class with a resounding, "MIND YOUR OWN DAMNED BUSINESS!" Or some other loudly shouted obscenity involving a self-induced sexual impossibility. :-) See ya tonight.

In regard to the disposal procedures, this is really the first I've heard of it.

However, one bit of advice: Stay clear from the brand called FEIT. They suck. I had two in a box that just didn't work at all, and one burned out already. It's a real pain in the neck getting them to replace bulbs, too.

Yes, Ma’am.

That's what I want from my Congress.

I want them to tell me what light bulbs I can use. I am grateful that this extraordinarily rich nation is lending a helping hand to China – we don’t need all that money. Our policy makes me feel philanthropic. It feels good to feel good.

And if they have a few minutes left over from their busy schedule, I'd really like it if they'd regulate household toilets. For example, if Congress would ban the one-flush toilets and prescribe two or three flush toilets, we could do more to control climate change phenomena.

I don't know about my friends here at Zee's place . . . but I definitely appreciate congressional micromanagement. Lord knows we can’t figure this out for ourselves. Now if Congress would only do something really swell about toilet paper. I mean, isn't that two-ply product un-American and harmful to the planet?

I had some of these lights in my house.

I replaced them with actual light bulbs when I wanted the room to be illuminated brighter than dying candle light.

What can I say?

You are ALL SO SMART...except steve (JUST KIDDING, STEVE!) My husband just told me we had one of those light bulbs but he didn't get enough light from it here on his desk so he tossed it in the trash! UHOH. SO, you can all blame US if you get mercury poisoning or something!! Steve..what are you guys, a bunch of vampires there? (seriously...is it light enough at your house!?), or are you living by dying candlelight like poor Beamish suffered through !(ya, right)

WHAT is our government DOING????? HELP!

If it is any consolation, the U.S. is behind on this. The EU just passed a law forbidding conventional light bulbs in the near future.

There are several points to be made (excuse me if I repeat some of all of your points):

1. While these things save some energy, they provide a lousy light (I had one in my office, I threw it out because I couldn't see and read sufficiently any more).

2. What doesn't get into people's minds is that much more energy could be saved by not leaving lights on when not in the room. That includes non occupied high rises during the night. Have you ever wondered why it is necessary to keep the light on in these? My conservative estimate would be that we could save 50% (yes, fifty) of electrical energy if we would behave differently. In this, Europe is much further advanced than the U.S.

3. If something like these toxic things are introduced for public consumption, the necessary infrastructure must be created for safe disposal. It does not exist at all today, so can you imagine the consequences? And whose responsibility will it be? The Federal government? The local governments? Folks, this will cost a lot of money, effort and space. The city mayors will then say thank you to the Federal Government for this "gift".

4. The point with the import from China is a good point. Not only will it not create one single employment in the U.S., we will be completely dependent on another country, and on China at that?

Bad idea, here and in Europe - they are equally stupid, or even more so. Why do elected people leave common sense at the doorstep when they enter congress (if they aver had one)?

By-the-way: I believe we are seeing the end of democracy as we used to know it (stay tuned, we will write about that). We have lost one important principle: One should never, ever let people make decisions about something they don't understand. That would exclude 95% of congressional action. And that would be good.

When I moved into new Navy housing in San Diego all the new homes required low flow toilets. Courtesy of the state government these were required on new homes to save water. Supposedly used less than a typical toilet. Problem was you had to flush the dam* thing 3 or more times for it to be effective, so you ended up using more water.

Dog gone nanny state!`

Z said...

Elbro...I've heard that from a lot of people...and ya...flushing 3 times does NOT help save water, does it!

BUT, the Left is convinced!

Imagine how much lunacy will be passed with Obama AND an even more leftist congress? We can just flush our freedoms down the toilet...IF we can get them down with only one flush because there'll probably be a toilet flushing spy outside checking.

They don't mind terrorists listening in on phones, but DO NOT use a regular flushing toilet..OH, no..........

This is another example of these bureaucrat idiots, understanding nothing but making decisions... and from one extreme to the other.

Saving water in toilets is a good thing, but the good systems have 2 release stages, one of which is for heavy duty. In operation in Germany, works very well, and actually leaves the decision to the user. And, for a change, not required by the nanny state.

BTW: If they want to regulate water - why don't they forbid washing off sidewalks by the (il)legal gardeners, that is the biggest waste of this precious resource (precious at least here in CA, in the middle of the country they are probably laughing about this remark).

Mr.Z

I absolve and recuse myself from Mr. Z's term 'heavy duty'.

just wanted to make that perfectly clear!

Half the people have IQ's less than 100. And that is why "democracy" cannot work. That's especially true when fake egalitarians (aka Marxists) want to push the notion that everyone is as good, as attractive, as talented and as worthwhile as everyone else.

Plainly that's a lie.

I have to say the new bulbs are just terrific. I love them, and just because the left has pushed them at us via the spineless legislature does not necessarily mean they can't be any good.

As for mercury, "they" have phased out the fever thermometers that served us very well for many decades, because they were filled with mercury.

You can't get them anymore.

So, from that standpoint forcing the spiral bulbs on us makes no sense at all. "The" do it it to us, because they can. It's lots of fun to push people around.

"They" also have forced the installation of toilets that use only 1.5 gallons of water. The toilets don't work very well. Most of the time you have to flush twice or more to get the job done.

"They" should stay out of homes and our personal lives.

But I still love the new light bulbs. Right now they last 3-5 years. Once they get established, however, "they" will probably find a way to make them burn out faster, so we are forced to spend more money. "They" have done that with everything else.

Government and Industry are almost equally corrupt. But of the two I prefer Industry. If you don't like GE, you can always try Sylvania. Government has become nothing but a great big gun held to our temples.

Nevertheless, you should try the spiral bulbs before rejecting them. They come in varying wattages.

What do you think of the forced use of digital TV? There was nothing wrong with analog TV, yet we are being forced to change.

How and why do these things happen?

COERCION SUCKS.

But Miser Beamish:

I thought the same thing at first. The new bulbs were running dimmer, but as time went on they became just as bright - if not brighter - than regular light bulbs.

I am utterly fascinated at how much my electric bill diminished.

I feel so green.

Don't forget, that's a size XL for the rustafarian guy shirt, heh!

But of course:

That's me just being faecetious!

Anon...some good points there.

Steve..good about the elect bill and the fact that they get brighter with time..you sure?

I agonize over how to properly dispose of things like an old can of paint and don't want to agonize about a stupid lightbulb...when they come with something you toss them into before you put them in the trash, maybe I'll be there!.
