The Taliban...a fascinating insight....what do YOU think?

If any of you, too, think and worry about terror attacks or our soldiers over there fighting muslim extremists and wonder where all this is going, please READ THIS. I'd very much appreciate your considered and thoughtful opinion. Please read the whole thing, it's eye-opening, it's educational and quite interesting. Thanks so much.

Given that three U.S. soldiers who were killed on the ground fairly deep in Pakistan the other day, I'd be concerned about where this is going.

There are recent reports that the Afghan security apparatus is a haven for graft, nepotism and corruption but we seem to believe we know better than all the other empires who have tried to move in there. The U.S. military will fix things, correct?

But as long as this poor backward nation is perceived as some sort of threat we'll commit more money to this fiasco.

Mortenson is the survivor of an eight-day armed 1996 kidnapping in Waziristan, escaped a firefight between two warlords, lived out two fatwas issued by enraged clerics for educating girls, and was the recipient of a flood of hate mail from fellow Americans for educating Muslim children.

and if we did nothing what would this guy accompish, except his own death at the hands of the Taliban?

How much humanitarian aid and how many Nobel Prize nominees would be able to accomplish anything if the Taliban were still in charge?

insert union vice Afghan security and you just described the Obama administration

This article speaks clearly about the truth on the taliban. Not much to add there.

What I would like to comment on is how Obama and his administration are slowly destroying our economy. So many factories are closing down, people are being laid-off left and right. We are all struggling to survive and doing are best to keep food on our tables, pay our mortgages, utility bills, etc. We have to have these and it is expensive, not to mention gas prices.

Yet, Obama continues to spend our money like it is his to do with as he pleases.

I am worried, very worried. We just heard that our Coca-Cola plant is closing its doors and Wal-Mart is laying off over 300 people.

This should be the governments focus, bring our troops home and focus on our soil.

Leticia, I'm SO SORRY about big companies reacting so badly to this economy in your community. God bless your town and may it recover VERY soon.

But, YES, the Taliban article is important in that the inferences are that we can change hearts and minds through our behavior there.......IS it worth spending some money and making 'friends' by building schools and hospitals and a business infrastructure? WHY NOT get companies which aren't faring SO well here and opening offices THERE; Production, manufacturing, agriculture, farming, livery, etc...and giving them JOBS and training them to run cities?
These were people who were very THE KITE RUNNER it really gives an insight into the Afghan culture before big problems. They were secular Muslims; eager for enlightenment and education and to fit into the world, they were only taken over by the rigid islamist mind more lately....

Would it be worth saving military money AND OUR PRECIOUS SOLDIERS!!! by going to TALK to these people and do things differently?
Or are we going to keep Mirandizing and apologizing and giving them the UPPER HAND so they think of us as just another stinking third rate country that hates them and wants them all them plenty of ammo to keep building bombs with which to kill us at home.....?

Ducky, soldiers die in war. I know lefties hate that, but it happens. NOBODY should die, but they do, very sadly. "concerned about where this is going" is the point of my post but I'm not getting anywhere with my point....
Mr. Z thought going into Afghanistan was almost as bad as going into the Bosnia/Herzegovina, Albanian situation....nobody's EVER won there, but at least those areas weren't creating people and bomb with which to kill US at home.

This "poor backward nation" wasn't that until islamists took real hold........and of course they're a threat as long as opium's their big cash cow and they support Al Qaeda and killing Americans.

Elbro; and this guy could die there and WE'd be considered the bad guy for having not warned him that what he's doing is dangerous. man. You've got to admire his heart but you wonder sometimes.........
It's sort of like OUR rich Malibu beach residents crying that every year their homes get damaged by high tides.........or fires....and expecting insurance to bail them out.
Or people who do high-risk ski trips, get stuck down crevices and expect rescue people to sacrifice their lives to help them.

Having come from "that" part of the world, my perspective on this whole issue is that this is, essentially, a losing battle (or rather, war) that is being fought. The long and short of it is that, in the end this is a struggle against an ideology and a religion, and therefore no amount of good or humanitarian acts(while commendable) will make ANY difference..if it does, it is usually more the case of the exception than the rule.

I recall a story of our family's faithful old Muslim maid who asked me why the Americans were so horrible and killing her "brothers and sisters" in Afghanistan. I gave her the gist of the war, the whys and hows (of which she had no knowledge except what she had been "told" by the "leaders", being illiterate). I then asked her if she was aware of the Taliban and how they were oppressing her "sisters". I told her that if she lived in Afghanistan, she would be punished (or executed) for walking around with her face and feet exposed (in less conservative Muslim communities, women only have to keep their head covered).

She was incredulous and had never heard of such a thing!

How many mes would be there to "educate" and "change people's minds"? The guess is anybody's. While America fights a losing war at huge risk to themselves and their fragile economy, it is certainly not earning brownie points with even those people they are attempting to "help".

Anonymous, you make such good points and I so appreciate your having commented. Maybe you're right..the Taliban mentality just can't be changed.
Yet, I know there were Afghans who were very sophisticated years ago and wouldn't have dreamt of the kind of behavior that's taken over their country.
The fact that your family maid is that uninformed, or indoctrinated, says a lot.
God help us all...this scourge may not end until nuclear materials get into an extremist muslim's hands.
This is why I wish WE could fight back before they kill millions of us. But our political correctness and kindness won't allow..what an irony.

Dear Folks,

Ben Franklin said: "A republic, if you can keep it."
Now, read the disciplined quotes in the 1400 yr old "Holy" Qur'an > we must study the History of Islam.

Allah's Apostle said: I have been made victorious with Terror." Bukhari, Vol 4, Book 52, #220.

"...strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies of Allah and your enemies." Qur'an 8:60

"The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and his messenger (Muhammad) and strive for mischief through the land is:
execution, or crucifixtion or cutting off the hands & feet from opposite sides..." Qur'an 5:33

This is Islam's unholy doctrine.

Fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and lie in wait for them with every strategm (of war).
Qur'an 9.5
Now, IRAN's Grand Ayatollah Ali Khomeinei & Ahmadinejad have their missiles, and are near to producing
a nuclear weapon to "wipe Israel off the map", then to dominate all
of the Middle East. Egypt & Saudi Arabia are aware of this threat, and wait for someone to stop them!

We send troopers, hold back our obvious military superiority; our Air and Naval power has no equal.

A huge mistake!

We have lost the will to end it. Where are the Winston Churchill's & FDR's of this generation?

Obama wants to "negotiate" with 'talk to them'!

Think about that, folks. - reb
