Obama’s Pentagon review: Gitmo meets the standards of the Geneva Conventions February 20, 2009 by Allahpundit
Z: Yup, I don't usually just lift a blog post, but this is just so important...on so many levels. Have at it. Thanks, Hot Air
When does the military’s compliance with international law qualify as bad news? When you’re a new president desperate for excuses to follow through on a dopey campaign promise that’ll please your nutroots base and no one else.
Oh well. Back to the “it just looks bad” argument.
A Pentagon review of conditions in the Guantanamo Bay military prison has concluded that the treatment of detainees meets the requirements of the Geneva Convention but that prisoners in the highest-security camps should be allowed more religious and social interaction with each other, according to a government official who has read the 85-page document.
The report, which was ordered by President Obama, was prepared by Adm. Patrick M. Walsh, the vice chief of naval operations, and has been delivered to the White House. Obama requested the review as part of an executive order on the planned closure of the prison at the Guantanamo Bay U.S. naval base on the southeastern tip of Cuba…
Walsh concluded that … force-feeding, which involves strapping prisoners to feeding chairs and forcing tubes down one nostril and into their stomachs, is in compliance the Geneva Convention’s mandate that the lives of prisoners must be preserved, the government official said.
Actually, insofar as this gives The One a handy alternative to expanding our renditions program, it does mean good news for him — or rather, it would if the left still cared about renditions, which they haven’t since January 20th. Exit question: With opposition to closing Gitmo already near majority levels, the media had better keep this as quiet as possible, huh?
z; oh, dear. What a problem for the Left..

Please, Z...
Don't try and confuse anyone in the White House with FACTS. They'll call you irresponsible (if your an expert) and unqualified to judge (if you're not an expert).
Sounds like the air just got sucked out of the messiah's properly inflated tires.
Now that it's Obama's Gitmo, suddenly this is a revelation. We knew long before he was elected, the truth about the place. We knew that those detainees were in conditions superior to any high security prison here in the USA.
When it was Bush's Gitmo, well, that was different.
The same holds true for the war, and the lives of our troops. It was a war crime for our military men and women to die in Iraq, but evidently to die in Afghanistan is perfectly acceptable, or the Sudan, as many on the left have called for.
It's suddenly OK for the defense dept. to be told they have to cut their budget by 10%. Who cares if this impacts the amount and quality of equipment the military needs? Who cares if this affects intelligence capabilities? Who cares? We're only at war.
This is the only part of the government which thus far has been told to cut their budget. Aside from our military, there are other considerations.
We seem to care if thousands of auto workers lose their jobs, but defense workers? Who cares? Many thousands of them btw are civilians. What about them? They have families too. But, hey, who cares? Evidently the President doesn't. Layoffs are probably taking place as we speak. I wouldn't know because no one cares, especially the press.
Isn't the defense industry "too big to fail?"
I care. Can you compare a soldier who risks his life every day to protect us and our freedoms, to some guy filling potholes?
I think the sacrifice of military personnel is much greater than the sacrifice of someone on unemployment, silly me.
During WWII everyone at home sacrificed for the war effort, now defense takes a cut, and the silence is deafening.
Pris
Titus, glad to have you here..
Good point about this WH. And they're doing SO MUCH WRONG.
DB...I wish.
L&0, can we do ANYTHING right!?
Pris, you make so many amazingly good points that I hadn't considered I don't know where to start.
Pris, good comments. The defense dept makes cuts and it's ok. During the Bush admin he was attacked for not spending enough on the troops. Of course, to be fair, surrender is probably cheaper than trying to win.
Excellent comments, Pris.
And yes, just heard that Boeing has laid off lots of people in Seattle Area.
Yes, Mr. Obama has announced that after his spending frenzy he wants the decifits cut in half.
How do we do that you might ask?
Glad you asked me.
Why, silly chickens, you just kill that big bad war machine and make sure the tax cuts President Bush gave us expire.
Oh, and tax the nasty rich too.
And , tax the mileage people drive, maybe how many times they flush a toilet.
Why, with a little creativity, you too can become a tax creator savant.
Oh yes, same old same old.
By the way, Obama and the missus are out looking for some new modern art to hang in their living quarters.
How wonderful.
He won, you know.

"What happens in Gitmo stays in Gitmo."
Hey, hand me that beer.

Average..you're KIDDING, right?
Did you know Eric HOlder's law firm represents a lot of Gitmo detainees? YA
Z,
Doesn't surprise me one bit...& that fact actually concerns me. The almost shameless total corruption of this administration I am concerned may numb even us to its corruption, thus "pushing the envelope" of corruption even further, to where it is just accepted.
