I thought the Dutch played like a bunch of thugs but I'm not used to watching soccer.
they did, Ducky. They also missed a lot of plays they shouldn't have and they LOVE dramatics. That's why Mr. Z wasn't fond of them.
Spain apparently played well the whole last two years...they looked so happy I couldn't help being thrilled tho I really couldn't care less about Spain, tell you the truth. I'd tell you why but then I'D sound elitist :-) I must admit.
I just wish the game had been exciting, more scoring, etc.....it's very exciting to watch then, REALLY it is. I applaud you for sticking it out. It's a huge world event.
z, I'm surprised you haven't posted on the anniversary of "To Kill a Mockingbird".
The film might be somewhat overrated but like "It's a Wonderful Life" it's so iconic that there isn't much point to bothering to analyze it. It's just there.
I didn't know. As you must know, that's my number one favorite film EVER. I have about 100 favorite films in second place, but TKAM has EVERYTHING. I particularly love the score and they way they weave it throughout the story.
No use analyzing, you're right..it's just there, and aren't we richer for it. "Stand up, chilren, that's your father walking by" sublime
Z, if you had read RugCenter, you'd know that the World Ccup Finals had been over Saturday morning. (or maybe he meant any interest he had in it was over by then)
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch. (from Austin Powers)
tio
Haven't read RC yet....sometimes I don't have time, but I usually look forward to it.Yup, I just checked and it's still in my inbox.
Sorry, but if RC thought it was over yesterday morning, he was confused because there wasn't even a gave yesterday morning :-)
Intolerance toward other cultures ...well...I have some if their culture's faith calls for death or laziness or corruption, I have to admit...but I do wish more Americans were at least appreciative of other cultures. I've said good things about France here and have been amazed at the reactions..as if "If you think they have good cafe life, you must hate America!" I never quite understand that :-)
Z- I heard that Austin Powers quote a few years back and thought it was a classic self-refuting statement. The Netherlands' being in the finals made me search my brain for Dutch-related tidbits. The other ones would be "If it ain't Dutch, it ain't much" and "I'd rather be in Holland, wooden shoe? (wouldn'tchyoo).
I talked to some people who'd been to France recetnly. They said the people there are nice...once you get outisde Paris.
I confess to not having seen or read To Kill a Mockingbird. In the interest of time, would you suggest the film over the book?
tio
tio, yes...I'd very VERY rarely do that but the film is SO respectful to the book and so true to the story that I'd definitely recommend the film if time's an issue. Even if it weren't!
I think it should be high school mandatory viewing:
-Parental respect yet friendship
-Loving family and respect for staff
-Honest feelings on race unselfconsciously presented
-goodness from people we'd not expect it from
-utter respect from both races for the other race
-white racism honestly portrayed and examined
-a better black man than a white man, when that was not a popular portrayal
-an ending that wasn't sugar coated
etc etc.
I also recommend to every high schooler BOYZ IN THE HOOD. Among 1000 other films:-)
That might make for a good blog post, come to think of it!?
something just hit me; I was thinking about the film and thought of the production qualities and thought "you want to TOUCH that film" it's textured and soft and rough. Black/white, my favorite.
yes, you want to TOUCH it.
"I'm surprised you haven't posted on the anniversary of "To Kill a Mockingbird"."
There are anniversaries of films?
Ducky, you think it was overrated? It beat out Lawrence of Arabia for an Academy award which I thought was a great film too. Speaking of scores Z, this one too was magnificent IMO.
Pris
Not so much over rated as one of those works that just moves beyond rating.
I think it is manipulative at times but in the final analysis, so what. It's a cultural icon and you should be careful about tampering with such things.
I watched the end of the World Cup, but not because I'm a fan of football (soccer, really), but because I wanted to know if Paul the Oracle Octopus was going to be right, and goshdarnit, he was.
Let's hear it for Paul.
BTW I didn't know about your affection for TKAM, but I must confess that I thought it was a great movie and even had a crush on Gregory Peck for the longest time.
Cube, Paul thought Germany would win..I wish he'd been right.
Are you sure about that? I thought Paul predicted a win for Spain.
Cube, you're right...but I heard he'd predicted Germany would win THEIR last game which they lost and which kept them from the finals xx
Baseball is a tad boring for youngsters not yet engrossed in the puberty years. So to maintain a level of interest in my little league boys of summer I stated, "The only thing you need to know about soccer is,,,, that's what you do after you marry her."
The baseball mom's did not appreciate the hidden dramatics intended, and sure enough I was the recipient of many flicks of Mocking Bird fingers that year.
The next year I wuz made the left field coach. They told me since I was already out there, might as well give me something to do.
After the script was written and played, my only defense would be that soccer offense I said, helped 6 young men to go on and play college baseball and git an education. Hope they have a "Wonderful Life".
So Holland is a S pain, but the flowers and wine ain't bad.
jadedfellow..your post before the top one scared me from commenting at all at your site .. is all okay now for SURE? :-)
Anyway, DUTCH WINE??
