Sunday Faith Blog....got a favorite HYMN?

Doesn't SPRING make us feel even more like singing?

"..I will sing to the Lord, I will sing; I will make music to the Lord, the God of Israel" Judges 5 3b

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HYMN? Got one? A couple? I'd love to learn about some new ones! Have a blessed Sunday!

"If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper; but if we and our posterity neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity." Daniel Webster.

Battle Hymn of the Republic.

Thanks Z! I enjoy reading from The book of Judges. Immediately proceeding Judges is a particularly fascinating character, Joshua.

As you all know he was chosen by Moses based on his ability alone. This was unheard of in the world 3500 years ago and G-d only knows how different the world would have turned out had Moses done the typical thing and annointed his son, Gershom. The Hebrew Bible is virtually silent about Moses' wife and kids, and boy oh boy there must be a story to that!

One thing we do know, Moses chose his most able, he was a believer in Meritocracy. Joshua was a BRILLIANT and ruthless miltary commander as he led Israelite armies through the land of Canaan.

The History channel had a 1 hour special about Joshua, extolling his brilliance against overwhelming odds. It's an hour well spent. At one point in the show it would have been very easy to at least acknowledge that a good portion of the world chalks up some of the Israelite success in those battles to divine intervention. Tactical brilliance and courage will only get you so far.

I'm a HUGE fan of most of the Founding Fathers, and John Adams is near the top of that list. He was a good Christian who especially enjoyed this passage from Micah 6-8:

He has told you, O man, what is good,
And what the Lord requires of you;
Only to do justice,
And to love goodness,
And to walk modestly with your God;
Then your name will achieve wisdom.

The beauty and poetry of the KJV of Micah 6-8 is stunning, and that's the first thing that grabs the reader. Rabbis through the ages were fond of this because they thought of it as a compendium of all the 613 Mitzvot (Commandments) in the Torah. Rabbi Simlai said, "Micah came, and reduced the Mitzvot to three!"

Here's an interesting Christian angle to the poetic prophet, Micah:

My favorite hymn?

Let's see. I have so many beloved hymns.

For the Christmas season, my favorite is "Of the Father's Love Begotten."

For spring, I think my favorite is "This Is My Father's World."

Z said...

morgan, not for HISTORY CHANNEL. For them, it would be very difficult to acknowledge divine intervention. God forbid, so to speak!
And I've often thought that same thing; God could have taken care of everything thru his intervention, but didn't...he sent MEN TO FIGHT.
Excellent point you make there.

"to love goodness"...don't you weep at real acts of kindness, instinctually feel tears. "do justice, love goodness, walk with the Lord"...three. sounds good to ME! Seems like you can't go wrong...
Thanks for the 'interesting Christian angle'! "Interesting?" "PIVOTAL,I SAY, Morgan!" XXXX

Always....I know the first hymn but am not sure I know your second choice...Got to look into those.thanks!!

Beamish, BEAMISH, beamish.....you never let me down! :-)

Ok my favorite is "Just a Closer Walk" because that is what I constantly strive for.

"Nothing Between" is absolutely beautiful, look at the words!

You know Z, this is my topic! I love singing. There are so many I could list here!

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

Refrain:
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.

Perfect submission, perfect delight,
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels, descending, bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.

Perfect submission, all is at rest,
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

There are so many it's hard to name only a few...

I like the melody of Guide Me Ever, Great Redeemer VERY much. (the Welsh miners sing this in HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY and their handling of it is brilliant)

I do love JM's choice, A MIGHTY FORTRESS

How Great Thou Art, Fairest Lord Jesus,I Need Thee Every Hour, Abide With Me...

I really like Arlo Guthrie's rendition of "Down to the River to pray"!

Not fair, I know...too many. And, of course, there are probably 10 more I REALLY like and don't recall right now.

Pris' suggestion of Handel's Messiah is a favorite of mine! What brilliance and power...

Also (and I know this is a leap), Elvis' version of "Peace in the Valley" is one of the most beautiful Gospel songs I've ever heard.
Dolly Parton can also belt out the Gospel songs. Her costumes used to be great fun to watch! :-)

Pinky, "I'll Fly Away" is also very good.

You know, even a Hebe like me gets exposed to Christian music here in NE FL. This is a HEAVILY Christian area, and many of my customers play Gospel music in their homes.

Great is thy faithfulness.

Morning by morning, new mercies I see.
All I have needed, thy hand hath provided.
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.

One of my all-time favorites, Z, because it is so true.

All the words of the entire hymn hold so much meaning.

When the weather is nice, and I'm sitting out on the deck, in the morning, or in the evening, I sing it to Him.

JAN! Great reminder, that is a fabulous hymn, thanks so much. I just love that one, too.

This is just one ADORABLE line from Jan's blog (please go check out the rest, they're at least as good as this one!)

TIME TO PRAY

A pastor asked a little boy if he said his prayers every night. "Yes, sir." the boy replied.

"And, do you always say them in the morning, too?" the pastor asked.

"No sir," the boy replied. "I ain't scared in the daytime."

okay..I can't resist..here's another, but the rest at her blog are great, too!

LOT'S WIFE

The Sunday School teacher was describing how Lot's wife looked back and turned into a pillar of salt, when little Jason interrupted, "My Mommy looked back once while she was driving," he announced triumphantly, "and she turned into a telephone pole!"

WOW!! Y'all have named some tremendous hymns! I love 'em all. A couple that I really like that many are probably not that familiar with is "Hallelujah's 'Tis Done" by Philip P. Bliss, "The Bible Stands" by Haldor Lillenas, & probably my favorite because of the wonderful theology married to great hymnody is "At Calvary" by William R. Newell. Thanks for this great post, Z!!!

Z said...

Don't y'all think the cherry blossoms in the photo are gorgeous! I was hoping some of you still in snow would love them! The promise of SPRING!

Thanks, David..glad you enjoyed it..I'm going to look up the lyrics to your favorites now!!...oh, just did..this isn't my favorite melody, but who needs that with words like THIS?

At Calvary

Years I spent in vanity and pride,
Caring not my Lord was crucified,
Knowing not it was for me He died on Calvary.

By God's Word at last my sin I learn,
Then I trembled at the law I'd spurned,
Till my guilty soul imploring turned to Calvary.

Now I've giv'n to Jesus everything;
Now I gladly own Him as my King;
Now my raptured soul can only sing of Calvary.

O, the love that drew salvation's plan!
O, the grace that brought it down to man!
O, the mighty gulf that God did span at Calvary!

Mercy there was great, and grace was free;
pardon there was multiplied to me;
There my burdened soul found liberty, At Calvary.

thanks, David!

David Wyatt said...

My pleasure, Z! Thanx for posting the lyrics! Isn't that a glorious truth: "Mercy there was great, and grace was free;
pardon there was multiplied to me;
There my burdened soul found liberty, At Calvary." If His grace cost me even one thing, I'd still be lost! Praise HIS Holy Name!

Always..gorgeous lenten season song, isn't it. Have you heard "Lord Jesus, is it I?" I used to sing that during lent.

Am playing Via Delarosa for a singer on Good Friday night....I love accompanying her, even if I CAN'T SING!! (Smile)

My favorite rendition of the Battle Hymn is by a cheesy Christian metal band called Stryper.

I'll kill to have the lead singer's voice.

Beamish.."Cheesy Christian band""?? Is that like a Lutheran Christian or Methodist Christian band? "CHEESY!" HA!I'll tell you what, that guy CAN SING (you could almost wonder if it's a woman at first, but it's a guy, right?) AMAZING set of pipes..thanks!

Tammy, welcome! I'm going to Google the Navy Hymn now to remind myself what that is...thanks!

David, if it wasn't a church thing, it'd frost my goat that I'M not the one singing!!! Usually, I sing LORD JESUS, WAS IT I? during Lent, then she gets this one, but that didn't happen this year. Well, whatever. I love the singer and love accompanying her, we've done it five times now, and I love tradition, so it's good all the way around!! Thanks xxx

Z said...

tammy, I can't find a link to the melody but those words are AWESOME, and I don't use the word awesome too often. Thanks so much..fantastic.
IMAGINE how long they've gone before some PC secularist hasn't sued to get them to stop singing so Christian a song?
It's only a matter of time, i guess. sadly

(((Thought Criminal))) said...

Cheesy describes the concept mixing hair metal with evangelism.

But then again, Metallica now wears more makeup than Stryper did then.

Z said...

"hair metal"??
Beamish, God doesn't mind make up on heavy metal bands.

he told me so. Really.

Z,
To me, two lenten hymns stand out: "O Sacred Head Now Wounded" and "O, Dearest Jesus." The lyrics are likely to cause your eyes to well up with tears, and the minor keys in which these songs are written complement the lyrics beautifully. If I had to pick one, I'd take "O, Dearest Jesus."

If interested, lyrics can be found here:

Also, Via Delorosa is very good.

Tio, Kimshelley and I are performing Via Delorosa Good Friday..wish you could be there.
I do know "O Dearest Jesus, What Law Have you Broken"..what words!! You're so right.

I used to like the Sacred Head Now Wounded but, as much as I ADORE MARY, she plays it so slowly, I have to admit all I can do is kind of privately tap the pew in hopes she gets going and pray to God for PATIENCE because SHE ISN'T!..!! I mean, I know it's very sad and beautiful but.........

My favorite is "Nearer My God To Thee." I play some piano and cannot get through it without tearing up. (Though others might contend that it is my playing that brings on the tears.)
